View Full Version : Frequent Flyer Miles?

I've been having these questions in my head for a while now. I've been playing with a friend who told me that a SOARING figure can NOT range attack a grounded figure. This boggles my head a bit. Grounded figures can Range attack a soaring figure at half their range. So why wouldn't a soaring figure be aloud to AT LEAST do the same? So we've been playing basicly with hovering flyers and we use them as taxis... other than that I see no other advantage to having a flyer on my team.
I am familiar with rules related to Flyers against flyers but the part about flyers attacking ground figures is what's getting to me.

So my questions are:

1. IF, I can't attack a grounded figure with a flyer using ranged combat, then what other advantage other than Taxiing does a flyer have?

2. If I can range attack a grounded figure with a flyer (and with flyer I mean soaring figure) then is that flyers range divided by half or do you subtract one for the decent of the attack?

One last thing. What made me decide to write about this doubt was the description of the unique Kitty Pride.
Thanx for the attention!

A soaring figure can only affect or attack another soaring figure. Your friend was correct, and the reason is for game balance. Ranged combat is already a huge part of things, so now imagine if U Wasp was able to defeat 1000 points worth of Wolverines and other brawlers, with the only potential source of damage being critical misses.

To answer your question of other advantages---first, you make it seem as if a hovering figure can do nothing but taxiing. Keep in mind, however, that the hoverer isn't handicapped---a figure like Vision may have the benefit of taxiing because he is a flyer, but he is still able to attack like any other member of your team. But the other biggest difference between hovering and non-flying figures is that a hovering figure may always use ranged combat against adjacent figures, whereas if one ground-based figure is adjacent to another, opposing non-flyer he may only use close combat. For instance---Firelord may attack an adjacent Thug using ranged combat, thereby using RCE. Cyclops may only use close combat against an adjacent Thug, and so does not benefit from RCE.

Thanx HeroComplex for putting that into perspective. In my team I use a Thor and I am well aware that flyers can falso be good fighters. I just think it's a shame that they can't range attack a grounded figure. I mean grounded figures can attack at half their range I just kinda would have liked that it'd be the same for flyers. But Thanx for clearing that up.

On another note I want to thank you for letting me know about the range attack with hovering figures who are adjacent to an opposing figure. I had no idea I could do that and therefore just treated my flyers that were adjacent to an opposing figure as close combat.

Thnx! :)

Hey,
there are at least 2 other prime uses for a flyer to soar.

If your on the stairs and you soar...non-flyers like Logan/wolvering cannot pass through and thus will not be able to gain access to the roof [unless the soaring fig is killed/outwitted and killed/moves or some other fig moves the non-flyer to the roof...sweet huh!!

The other tidy use for soaring is to put your soaring fig in front of one of your valuable pieces. In many cases they will be out of range of your opponents ranged attackers...AND ...will block LOF to the figure that the soaring character is in front of just as any other figure would do....another nice tactic!!

wes

Soaring is a great tactic to use for those players whose game revolves around simply 'moving and shooting/attacking'. It gives you another trick to fight one dimensional tactics employed against you.

Yet another justification for having cheap fliers on your team, excellent moving terrain and as well as taxis.

Too bad there isn't some other cool use for flight in this game. I mean, if I could fly, I'd be a hell of a lot more useful than for menial tasks as taxi and terrain!

Alas, as has been painfully established time and time(and time) again...clix does not equal reality, or even comics :(
