N.I.T. Picks #2: "Warrior"

Welcome to N.I.T. picks where we pick a version of a character that is

Not Introduced To-date.

NIT-picks are not a never been made figure.
NIT-picks are not a "needs a better dial" figure
NIT-picks are not alternate reality versions of figures.

NIT-picks are all in continuity yet completely different takes on an existing character who has transformed in some way beyond what their original power set was.

Today we look at the Warrior, Guy Gardner

Today's question: What do you do when the editorial winds have changed direction calling for the revamp of a franchise that happens to strip a beloved fan favorite character of his power? If you're Guy Gardner, you go through multiple awkward phases until you find something that sticks.

Through the years the powers that be at DC comics have waffled from time to time with the Green Lantern franchise specifically focusing on the uniqueness of the character. A Green Lantern may appear special to normal humans, but as a single member of a force of thousands of other ring-slingers he isn't quite so special. For the similar reasons that Supergirl was KO'd in the original Crisis (the editorial felt that having too many Kryptonians running around weakened Superman's uniqueness), so too was the Green Lantern Corps disbanded, and brought to a membership of 1 (then reformed, then disbanded again, ad nauseum). These editorial mandates often left periphery characters (in this case: Guy Gardner and John Stewart) out in the cold.

For a short time Guy tried using Sinestro's yellow ring, though it was eventually destroyed by the Parallax entity (along with one of Guy's eyes). Guy fumbled for a while trying anything to be a hero, ditching the Moe Howard look and going from the no-powers Batman route to using body armor (designed by Blue Beetle), before a writer revealed that Guy was more than human.

It seems on a trip to the Amazon jungle Guy stumbled across a temple created by an ancient race called the Vuldarians who had lived on earth and taken relations up with humans. Guy was a descendent of this race, complete with mixed up Vuldarian DNA mingling with human DNA. His "Warrior" powers came about when Guy drank from a magical chalice spiked with a strange liquid (Roofies? Blood?) transforming him into a hero who had regenerative powers, and the ability (like many 90's comic creations) to turn his arms into all sorts of weaponry. At one point Guy might have become a woman.

If this sounds like a horrible storyline, it's because it was and I confess that my knowledge of it comes not through my collection (I wouldn't pay for that tripe), but read about it second hand. Much of this storyline was swept under the rug years later and in future storylines Guy apparently has lost his Vuldarian shape shifting powers and somehow regained Sinestro's yellow power ring. The editorial winds shifted again with Geoff John's reboot of the Green Lantern series and Guy got his green ring back, this time with a passing mention to his alien heritage.

As a N.I.T. Pick it's easy to understand why Guy Gardner: Warrior was never made - many would like to forget that era, and yet it's a part of the character's history and another storyline that lasted years and deserves some HeroClix representation. While I didn't pay much attention to Guy during that era, I certainly would like to see him dialed up.

I'd buy THAT for a dollar!! Warrior, I mean. I don't want a werewolf Cap until we get a Werewolf By Night and/or a Man-Wolf clix. :classic:

I'd like to see WizK!ds give most of your picks a shot at playable dials -- I thought 'Knightfall' was meh, but the Azbat LE is one I keep trying to find a reason to play more often.

As for suggestions, how about Zarathos-the-demon, rather than another Ghost Rider? He can't possibly be worse than SI Mephisto. I'd lay money his imaginary dial would beat the Devil senseless.

Guy becoming a woman = LAME, Guy becoming Warrior was actually quite enjoyable. I thought his powers were fairly unique and really fit his personality much better. Until Green Lantern Rebirth he didn't lose his Vuldarian powers (at least I don't think so, it has been a while) but he did lose the ability to use them if he didn't rest his body enough.

This is my favorite incarnation of Guy, though Red lantern Guy is a close second.

What about Man-Spider Spiderman...the only notable appearance of this outside of the Animated series was the issue with Synch and Plant-man.

Ah Warrior, one of many reasons I wrote off Guy as a joke until Rebirth.

alright, i've got one that i liked as a kid [warewolf captain america]Definately, agree that we should see Werewolf Cap as a N.I.T fig. I mean, like a super-soldier needs extra powers, but I'd still love to play him.

I'd love a Warrior, to that end, I'd still like a Yellow Lantern Guy as well as a Guy as The Gardener.

Warrior was terrible ... but it helped re-establish Guy as a hero. The "warrior" phase was when Guy maturied as both a hero and a person. Is Guy still a hot head and kind of a jerk? Yeah? But can you now count on him when the chips are down and bases are loaded? Hell yes. He's gotten the respect of his peers back and that was achieved during his God-Awful "Warrior" phase. In fact, Guy does some of the heavy lifting in the GL events as of late (He came up with the plan to beat the Anti-Monitor in "Sinestro Corp War", he saved the central power battery as a Red Lantern in "Blackest Night" and came up with the "Dove bullet" plan to take out the Black Lantern Anti-Monitor in "Blackest Night").

All that being said, I'd love to see a "Sinestro Ring/eyes beaten shut by Doomsday" era Guy Gardner in Clix. I'd also love Bloodwynd too and playable Maxima ...

Johnny Blaze - Human, No Zarathos Possession, Hellfire Shotgun, from Midnight Sons run

I second the need for a Zarathos. But I think Ghost Rider needs a remake first. Maybe you could have a Zarathos LE.

Another good N.I.T. character would be Spider-Man from "The Other" story line. Pre-Civil War & Iron Spidey costume. Very cool version of Spider-Man, altered abilities and attitude, as well. embrace the Spider! I know that there are already about 30 Spidey fig to date & I myself am not the biggest fan of his but I think this would be a great piece.

I guess I wouldn't mind seeing screaming Mimi version of songbird.

Oh how about captain punisher when he was wearing caps costume.

You could also do one where he had an artificial venom suit. It was made useing nanobots. He had it during world war hulk.

The Warrior series was actually really pretty good. The powers were so, so, sooooooooo bad, but the character development that was done was really good, especially for it's time. That said, I wouldn't mind seeing a Guy Gardner clixed as Warrior, and would probably use him pretty often.

As for the dial? It would have to have a lot of Shape Change and Battle Fury for sure. I'd also probably give him a power not unlike the Crisis Nightwing's combination of Energy Shield Deflection/Combat reflexes. I'd then probably load him up with a few clix of Close Combat Expert and charge, and then call it a day by slapping a range of 4-6 on his dial.

Arkaik
06/10/2011, 15:12
I would love to see clix of The Extremists and the Queen Bee from the old JLI/JLE days. They were serious villains and serious threats during a run of often humorous stories. And for comic accurate Mind Conrol and/or Mastermind fodder for said Queen...maybe some Global Guardians other than Fire and Ice.

Kris3000
06/10/2011, 15:23
Where is ION? All knowing and all seeing... one click does not constitute a guy that is more powerful than Superman. Also Sodam Yat Ion or GL would be nice as well

SQuigley316
06/10/2011, 16:00
While I'd rather see Sinestro ring Guy, I pretty much am behind any clix of Guy Gardner as he's the best character EVER. I actually liked the Warrior era not even so much because of the power set, which wasn't horrible but because he owned the greatest franchise of restaurants EVER, Warriors the hard Rock Cafe of the Superhero community. I wish during that era of crappy chain restaurants like Planet Hollywood, AllStar Cafe, Fashion Cafe, et al that DC could have gotten Time Warner to put out Warriors. I totally would have gone to those. Screw Planet Kryptonite, Long Live Warriors!

06/10/2011, 16:24
I'd like to see a heroclix army of the Hellhouse crew form the deadpool series. maybe a brick T-Ray, a comic acurate C.F. i'm guessing a dial like blob's, Weasel with perplex, enhancement and the scientist keyword, Patch with Stealth (inside the cabin) and Outwit (something like i know your mission). thats what i like to see so you can have a theme team with the mercenary keyword or something

How about when Cap was turned into a woman? Or a child? Or when he was Nomad?

y2schwabe

Or when Thor was female during Earth-X?

Then again. I would love Earth-X figures in general.

Kokuryuu
06/10/2011, 17:35
Heck yeah Warrior! He could be very beastly in clix, rockin some kind of adaptive weapondry power, maybe mimicking Gideon's SP, but only for attack and damage powers. Warrior is so incredibad, he's awesome.

GRENDELX
06/10/2011, 17:47
Beast Boy as a Pterodactyl.
Old West Hawk-eye.
The Riddler as a member of The Legion of Doom
Scarecrow as a member of The Legion of Doom.
Swampthing as the new Guardian.
Pied Piper as his own figure
The Hood status post mystical power upgrade.
Drax the Destoyer Guardians of the Galaxy version.

Wishful thinking:
Superman Herald of Galactus.
Wonder Woman with Thor's Hammer.

All that being said, I'd love to see a "Sinestro Ring/eyes beaten shut by Doomsday" era Guy Gardner in Clix. I'd also love Bloodwynd too and playable Maxima ...

It would be very cool to see a "Death of Superman" -era Justice League.

The Maxima we have is an okay-but-overcosted TKer and/or second-string attacker. Certainly not the kind of person who'd fly to Earth and demand Superman become her subservient husband!

And I've always thought Bloodwynd was a cool character with a great costume. WANT!

And who WOULDN'T buy a Fast Forces/Brightest Day type pack consisting of:

Fire
Ice
Lois Lane
Superman (battle-damaged)

Like the article for a Warrior Guy, I was so upset with JL Guy , particularly that the REV set was ended and would've been perfect for him and the 1 JL version we got was terrible.

Johnny Blaze - Human, No Zarathos Possession, Hellfire Shotgun, from Midnight Sons run
Beast Boy as a Pterodactyl.
Superman Herald of Galactus.

2nd these mentions as well.

I would be perfectly happy if WizKids never did a Warrior Guy Gardner. Give us Guy with Sinestro's ring, give us a remake of classic Guy in green moonboots and vest, but NEVER make this version. I like that they gave Justice League Guy the "Warrior" keyword, but that's all the tribute the Vuldarian version of Guy deserves.

I love Guy Gardner, but just not this era of the character. His powers weren't even unique, as you can make the case that Cyborg, Metamorpho or Alloy could do what he did - and I'd rather see remade versions of those characters instead of wasting a click on Vuldarian Guy.

and yet it's a part of the character's history and another storyline that lasted years and deserves some HeroClix representation.[/B]

Love this series of articles and am looking forward to future installments, but I have to hearitly disagree with the above statement. While it may be a part of Guy's history and it did last for years, it really doesn't need to be represented in my opinion. Not to say my opinion is the one that should be heeded, just sharing it just the same.
A real low point in the character and the only real redeeming part of this whole era of this character's history is what Carbon Rod noted previously: it started the lessening of the character's extreme one-dimensional representation. Still not my favorite character (or GL) but he's more nuanced and interesting to read nowadays.

I would like to see Manitou Raven (from Justice League and Justice League Elite) made into clix form. There aren't enough Native American heroes in comic books (Warpath, Shaman, ...ummm...see what I mean). Plus, giving him "INUKCHUK" as a special power would be cool.

I thought Bloodwynd was a pretty neat character, and then when you find out it's Martian Manhunter, it's even neater.

I would like to get a Ruin from the Superman Sacrifice arc where Wonder Woman killed Max Lord. I liked Ruin's costume and modus operandi. And I typically don't like villians. :)

:)

It's when they tried to make Bloodwynd a separate entity that I groaned. Seems like a standard comic trope: a well known Hero/Villain creates a disguise as a new character, then is revealed to be themselves, then a few months later the character they were posing as shows up in a storyline because someone thought that character was too kewl to not use.
