I was vacationing in Myrtle Beach this week when my friend __carnage__ and I stopped at at local comic/gaming shop named Apocalypse Comics.
After perusing their selection of single clix and finding some figs I've been very much looking for, we were told told about a tournament they would be holding on the Saturday we would be heading home. 600 points, modern age, theme only. Being the Dorks that we were, we actually had our clix on us for the trip and eagerly threw in our hats for some competition against some new players.
After a few days of deliberating and cursing keywords, point totals and a quick drive back to the shop to pick up an Iron Man. I came up with a scientist roster of:
Professor X 123
Iron Man 188
Barry Allen 119
Mr. Fantastic 100
Spider-man 50
Researcher 15
Crimson Gem of Cyttorak 5
Saturday crept upon us we arrived at 12 for the start of the games. Being that I am used to a low turnout for these kinds of things I was very pleased to see that we had 10 or so people out to play with teams ranging from X-men to Green Lantern fast forces to Monkey team complete with monkey dice (my favorite of the day).
Round 1: dkrmguy (New Mutants) Cable, Prof X, Wolfsbane, Cypher, Elixir, Wrath and Cannonball with the ATA.
Cypher chooses Fantastic Four TA to share.
This game started out poorly as my Barry Allen, the most clutch guy on my team against all the stealth and hover chairs, gets pummeled early.
After lucking out and having Cypher eat a psychic blast for Xavier I was finally into some points. Elixir and Warpath fell soon after but my opponent was quick to respond by dropping Reed. Spidey and Barry finally brought down Xavier and Stark blasted out Cannonball. Wolfsbane had crept herself into the back, howver, and one-shotted Chuck with a 6 on her BCF.
Eventually it came down to Tony vs Cable on his final click with Wolfsbane on the other side of the map. Stark missed his final volley to put Cable out but could not connect. On the final turn before time ran out, my opponent, refusing to cower away for the final moments, pushed Cable to attempt a final strike at Iron Man but the gamble did not pay off and the nerds lucked out a win.
Round 2: kfrog71 (Animal Team) MONKEYS!! Grodd LE, Solovar, 6x Gorilla City Warrior, 1x Hope Lantern
This game starts out a little sketchy. My first roll of the game is a critical fail with Prof X to psyblast a warrior. Thankfully the researcher was there with a theme prob to keep this from being over before it began. My second theme prob came on my opponents second turn to prevent Grodd from dropping 5 damage all over Iron Man. So the safety nets were gone but good ol' Barry was there to ensure they would not be necessary. Barry picks up the Crimson Gem and spends the duration of the game running around scooping up objects and slamming them into named monkeys while Reed kept his defense unhittable. Once Grodd and Solovar were gone and it was just a few apes left my opponent called it. Again my opponent makes good plays but using most of my perplex on defense kept the target numbers high.
2-0 1128pts
Round 3: juggaloai (X-Men) Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Psylocke, Rogue, Beast and Wolverine
I lose map choice for the 3rd straight game and am not excited to chase Nightcrawler from room to room in Arkham Asylum.
Nightcrawler carries Beast out and hides them in a room fairly close to my side of the board. I opt to go for an outside chance and run Spidey up to Nightcrawler and attempt to mind control him with Xavier. Passed the shape change only to miss by 1 on the dice roll. *sigh* My next turn we perplex up Spidey's attack and attempt to flurry the elf. Again we bypass the SC and even connect with the first swing but this time we are thwarted by Super Senses and the elf Bamfs away.
My boy Barry was back on the case tho and once again he scoops up the crimson gem.
Nightcrawler manages to grab Xavier out of the starting area and drags him to a nearby room. Unfortunately that was about the last time my opponent's dice would give him any assistance as the rest of the game was just one bad roll after another as Barry and Tony laid waste to Cyclops' squad.
Again the Pocket Protector Pals get a major assist in the form of dice and we derp out the final win of the afternoon.
3-0 1728pts
Undefeated was enough to take 1st place and earn me some cool swag in the form of LE Cable and LE Archangel.
All said and done I had a great time playing at Apocalypse.
All the guys there were really great. Everyone was really laid back and obviously enjoyed the game for the entertainment of it and not for power gaming. I got to check out kfrog71's awesome collection of d6's that made me drool and got to talk Clix and comic movies with the rest of the guys.
I highly recommend that anyone who may live near or will be visiting Myrtle Beach, SC come and pay this great den of gamers a visit. It's gaming in it's best form.
Thanks again to all the guys and gals there for making a couple of out of towners feel like part of the group. I can't wait to get back down there and chuck more dice with ya.
