Greetings true believers! Inspired by Thugit's thread of Baneful epicness and crushing news that he would be ending the Vengeance tour, shattering my hopes like Bruce's spine across his knee, I have decided to start a KO thread as well. I know now it is time to rack up KOs for Truth, Justice, and the American Way!
This looks like a job for...
Superman! Able to Hypersonic Speed, swing for big damage, and inspire even lesser mortals with his immaculate sculpt!
Shame, since the only guy who showed up was Duperman.
Yes I will be running the much maligned DC75 032 Duperman, possessing one of the worst sculpts in the game (certainly in Modern) and a lackluster dial that clearly was an attempt to make a "cheap" Superman and definitely lives up to his lower cost by being an unimpressive lump of 173 points. Nevertheless, he is one of the few Superman figures I own, and this sort of thread just would not be as fun if the piece was actually, ya know, good.
Now I do have one stipulation: I know comic-accuracy was a big part of Thugit's thread. Sadly I have only just started, and own few DC pieces to begin with, let alone enough to make up an accurate Superman team. Until the Supes set drops later this year and hopefully gives me some more appropriate backup, I will have to use what I have available.
So last night was the kickoff, and at my local venue the tournament was:
600 points
Must include one "father" and one "child"
Golden Age
No Highlander
I didn't expect much, given that Golden Age tends to have all kinds of crazy stuff going on, but I would not be daunted. I ran the following:
DC75 Duperman
DC75 Duperboy
BN Blue Flash
FF Starter Doombot 5953
BatB Jason Blood
BatB Holiday Killer
2 Heavy objects, 1 Light Object
Ordinary Day, 2 other BFCs I can't remember (one screwed with enemy theme probs and the other messed with shape change, both were ones I borrowed minutes before the tournament).
The plan was simple: Holiday and Jason get into terrain and do their Outwit/Prob Control thing. I make sure to drop to heavy objects near the center right next to each other. Duperman and Duperboy fly forward and carry Flash and the Doombot, landing just in front of the objects and dropping them on the objects behind them forming a little 2x2 brick. This way I would have two stealthbusters firing for six clicks (both benefitting from 2 enhancements) right out of the gate, which would slide back to 5 clicks as the game ebbed, and when things got hairy they could grab the objects and go charging forward to break people. Flash HSS dances out when possible, and generally perplexes up one of the Dupers' Attack stat or Duperman's defense which starts at a sad 17. Flash could also perplex up one or the other's range if need be (Duperman has 8:bolt:, and Duperboy has 6:bolt:).
I knew it wouldn't light the world on fire, but I felt like it could lay down enough hurt that it would surprise people.
Round 1:
Map: The Bank
Xforce theme team
WoS Deadpool
WoS Wolverine
WoS X-23
GSX Domino
GSX LE Archangel
GSX Psylocke
This was a good friend of mine, and I expected some nasty BFC, but knew that if I tried to drop my Ordinary Day he would probably cancel it with his theme team cancel. So he played Deep Shadows (I think?), which reduced all ranges to 6 and all clear terrain was hindered for LoS purposes. My Duperman didn't really fret that, but it neutered my ability to outwit, which means that for all the damage I could put out I knew I would be beholden to his Super Senses. Perplexing up my range would mean nothing, since
Basically the crucial turn or so I had to blaze away at him while he maneuvered into close range I was shut down by Domino and theme probs, while Jason struggled to maintain LoS due to the nature of bricking up for enhancement and the fact that his entire team was stealth at pretty much all times.
In the end, Duperman managed to duff X-23 while Flash got Domino and Archangel near the end, and my entire side got wiped. Not the greatest of starts, but that's Golden Age. I would really like to face this kind of team again with the hindrance to my range, and really make the most of that Superman TA.
Round 2:
Map: The Junkyard
I don't recall the specific numbers, but his team was essentially -
WoS Carnage
WoS Venom
WoS Toxin
WoS Antivenom
A metric butt-ton of WoS Symbiotes
Gem of Cyttorak
With the huge area of hindering in the middle, this one went about as expected. As he had so many pieces to manage each turn, we actually ran out of time, but when the dust had settled my team actually performed as I had intended. Duperboy slapped Antivenom with a heavy object and dropped him, while Duperman fried one Symbiote at range, then flew up and clocked Toxin with a heavy object and then moved down to tangle with the rest of his mob and managed to drop another Symbiote before we ran out of time. He had terrible luck attempting to get the Gem, I think somewhere in the range of 7 figures tried and noone picked it up, which was awful. I don't think a single figure of mine took a click of damage, thanks to Impervious and the general terribleness of the map for him.
Round 3:
Map: Rainbow Bridge
SI Captain Marvel
HoT Phyla Vell
SV Photon
AV Hulkling
SV Kree Colonel
Another Kree Grunt, don't remember which
This was a team obviously made for comic-accuracy, so that was really cool as I love the Captain Marvel stuff, and it is nice to see some older figs hit the table. This one went about as expected though, I just grabbed a nice corner of one of the towers and blasted away while Flash made a few forays out for HSS attacks. Duperman shot down Captain Marvel and Phyla Vell this round with Flash and Duperboy doing the rest of the heavy lifting (even Doombot got a kill!), while only losing Holiday in return.
So at the end of the night, I was actually mildly impressed by Duperman. He was not going to win any awards, but his biggest benefit is that he is still a pretty tough piece that is not so expensive you can't bring good support.
So for the Record -
Dupes - 2 Wins, 1 Loss, 6 KOs
Not bad for a night's work! Got a few more games coming up this weekend, so stay tuned.
So here is the scoresheet (with themed categories ala Call of Duty or most modern games with any kind of progression/achievements)which I will keep updated-
Up and at them! - Total KOs: 8
Bargain Bin - Higher point value KOs: 1
Jealousy - Clix with HSS KOs: 1
Me am Superman! - Superman Ally KOs: 0
World's Averagest - Superman Enemy KOs: 0
