I was disappointed with DEXCON 14 (July 6-10, 2011) this year. There was only one HeroClix tournament scheduled during the whole 5 days! Wiz Kids should do a better job of attending these conventions and providing prize support!!!
Last year there were 8 events and all were packed with players. This year only 2 people, besides the moderator, showed up for the one event. I, myself only attended Friday and Saturday because of the lack of HeroClix tournaments. I was able to participate in other tournaments such as Dystopian Wars, Battletech, Dune, Axis & Allies, and Babylon 5. All were miniatures games except for the Dune board game.
Battletech and Axis & Allies had great participant support. I received a Catalyst gift certificate for winning the tournament as well as "prize points" (1 point for win, 1/2 point for place and 1/4 point for show) to be used at the gift table. Axis & Allies handed out a starter set and rule book to all participants and more points for winning the tournament.
I walked away with 6 "prize points" for the 7 events I played.
Back to the HeroClix tournament... The moderator wanted to run a Galactus Battle, but we switched it to a 3-way 600 point battle royal because only 2 people showed up.
I had just purchased the Captain America gravity feed figures, so I decided to create a SHIELD team. I also brought with me my boxes containing Hammer of Thor, Web of Spiderman, and Giant Size X-Men. I put together the following team:
WS014 Iron Man 202 points
GX009 Wolverine 103 points
HA040 Captain America 72 points (Steve Rogers)
CA206 Black Widow 60 points
CA207 Nick Fury 60 points
CA205 Captain America 50 points (Bucky Barnes)
GX001 Madrox 44 points
3x Alias 9 points
TOTAL: 600 points
I used Madrox instead of a couple SHIELD generics because of the two clicks containing outwit and perplex (if I can get to them). I also had another Madrox and 2 Jamie Madrox waiting in the wings in case his Trait kicked in. I've never had it happen, but in a battle royal it might have given me an edge.
The moderator brought an Asgardian team consisting of the Warriors Three, Beta Ray Bill
HA023 Beta Ray Bill 159 points
HA017 Balder 130 points
HA059 Volstagg 103 points
HA018 Fandral 101 points
HA034 Hogun 96 points
TOTAL: 589 points
It was only the two of us while we were setting up our teams, when a third person showed up. His team consisted of:
WM005 Dr. Manhatten 276 points
UN003 DEO Agent 21 points
WS004 Nurse 10 Points
I can't remember what else was on this team.
Anyway myself and the moderator beat up on each other while Dr. Manhatten picked off the rest. all that was left was Dr. Manhatten and the two minions listed above, and Bucky Cap from my team. I conceded defeat and wound up taking second. While they were on the board, my figures did do extremely well against the Asgardian team and the other figures of the Dr. Manhatten team. It's just that by the time we got to Dr. Manhatten, we were both too weak to attempt an attack.
