Eternal Darkness was a freaky game. You had a healt meter, a magic meter, and a sanity meter. If you run out of sanity, the walls start to bleed, the rooms shift onto weird slanted angles, and your head can randomly explode. I remembered loving that game, but having nightmares about it.

That's almost exactly like Amnesia. No health meter or magic meter. You're either alive, or if monster attacks you are dead. But the sanity meter is awesome. At highest insanity it just reads "...". Your vision blurs, you can hardly run and it is hard to keep the visual straight. Obviously Daniel starts breathing more heavily, and, he grinds his teeth. The grinding noise is ... disconcerting.

Fantastic game and still imminently playable.

The first "insanity encrouching moment" I "achieved" in it was that it had bugs crawling across the screen. I actually paused for a moment and walked over to the tv to try and swat away whatever was flittering around the place, not realizing it was a game-effect.

I should never have pre-ordered/prepaid for my Superman case from Popular Collections. I did it over a month ago and now I'm suffering from buyer's remorse.

If I want my product on or near release date, I have to go with the online vendors.

Now I want to cancel my pre-order from Popular Collections and get a refund (so I can go with a more reliable online vendor) and I can't get ahold of them by email or by phone. :ermm:

Last person I purchased from - as I don't usually have good brick-n-mortar access - was not only relatively fairly priced (inc. free shipping) but he actually got me my case within about two days of release (hey, that's about the fastest I've ever received a new Heroclix set).

If you can ever make it to Colorado Springs, my regular venue always has plenty, and usually a dollar cheaper per booster than MSRP.

When buying online, I use Miniature market. Got me a WoS case in two days, very good timing.

Found this little tidbit, didn't know if Rokk had seen it or not.

Ant-Man

Edgar Wright gives a script update:

"Since February, we've done two drafts of the script, and we just handed in a third draft on Monday. The way we wrote the script is for it to be a standalone genre film. [I want to] create an 'in' for people so you don't have to know 50 years of 'Avengers' history to enjoy the movie."

Wright also indicated that he has a person in mind to play the lead, although it's still a matter of rumor and speculation whether that lead is Hank Pym, Scott Lang, or some combination of the two.

I think that Scott Porter guy would be cool as Scott Lang. But yeah, Aaron Eckhart comes to mind when I think of Hank Pym, mainly because he's supposed to be an older guy. And he could play that smart yet insecure man of science while being hero-like.

Rokk_Krinn
07/29/2011, 01:38
They've been talking about an Ant-Man movie for almost ten years now. I've learned to stop holding my breath. :)

That said, I think the person who had been rumoured for the (apparently now removed) Hank Pym cameo in the "Avengers" film would still be a great choice: Alan Tudyk. Eckhart though is a great idea (or they could shave some dollars and cast ol' Jamie Lannister whom I would swear could pass as Aaron twin).

Or me. :) I'd be a solid casting choice for Hank. :)

All respect to Scott - he's a bit young for the role. Seriously though, Hank was supposed to be the "eldest" of the Avengers...at least physically (i.e. - not counting Thor's actual age due to being a deity). At one point they even said he was about 40 when he took on Jan as a partner as she wasn't -quite- 21 - - her hitting 21 happened in an actual story a bit later on - and there was a reference to him being about twice her age when they first teamed up. I chalk that up, though, to bad research/knowledge causing multiple writers' accounts to conflict; obviously it has to be tossed a bit anyway as he'd be in his 50's these days. I figure he was probably in his mid-30's and Jan was about 20 when she became the Wasp...if we choose to keep the story of her turning 21 and collecting her inheritance.

I'll refresh you on my rules for foreign movies.

1) If it has subtitles for more than say 20% of the movie, it's foreign.

2) If it's in black & white, it's foreign. (Only exception to date is Night of the Living Dead)

3) If it was filmed before 1980, it's foreign. (There are a few exceptions like Star Wars and Night of the Living Dead)

4) I don't like foreign movies.

Yvonne: Will I see you tonight?

Surgeons are the fighter pilots / jocks of the medical community. We rarely expect them to even know what they're talking about on any given day. :)

(Which is why I did my internships in both Medical and Surgical. Extra-time, effort and potential burnout is worth understanding both sides of the "work world".)

Edit: Yes, I say this despite my spouse's father being one of the top surgeons in his field...in part, because he proves it all the time by having me explain medical terminology to him when we're comparing cases. :)

It means that's the name the random name generator gave you (assumably their 'failsafe' against people abusing names - they give you a weird name and you can just keep hitting "Retry" until you get one you like). I kept retrying until I ended up as "Bug Rock" as, well, it fit.

I'd rather see Tudyk play Green Arrow, but because GA is a DC character not named Batman, that means the movie would suck.

It's when you crack someone in the head with the butt of a pistol. In the movies, it's a move that magically puts the recipient to sleep. In reality, the effect is less immediate and much more likely to result in you and the recipient wrestling over the gun.

I always find it funny how sometimes a person can be knocked out really easy in movies and sometimes it's more realistic. And how sometimes a bullet to the stomach will kill someone instantly and sometimes it's more realistic. I usually end up yelling at the TV when someone conveniently immediately dies to a bullet or stab wound to the stomach. Even when it's to the heart, I imagine it's not instantaneous. Doesn't the heart have to stop and the brain become oxygen deprived? I always figured dead was when your brain died. Rokk?

I'm all right, by and large - thanks for asking. By way of a quick update:

My car is still in the shop but should be ready either today or tomorrow. It's waiting for that new rear windshield to be installed - but at least my insurance provides me with a rental, so transportation is not a big issue.

My wife's wrist is healing better than expected. Also, she got the stitches out of her foot last week and is getting around pretty good on a soft cast. As a matter of fact, she was going stir crazy, being stuck at home, so she's back at the office full time as of yesterday.

As for my knee, the torn ligament is painful but I am getting around with a cane. With all of the crazy stuff going on, I have put off surgery until the middle of September. Can't say that I have an easy time getting around, but slowly does it. Let's just say that I have stopped being in a hurry.

On the brighter side, my baby daughter started walking just this past weekend. You should see the video that I posted on my FB wall. That cute little face with the huge grin is one of the things that keeps me going these days.

Hey, Charles, I know you're a Planet of the Apes fan. Have you seen it yet? How do you think the commercials/trailers look? At first, I was stoked for it. But the more commercials I see the less impressed I am. :(

Has anyone seen Cowboys and Aliens? I'm sort of the same with this one. Was excited, but now I'm not sure.

Went to see Captain America the other day. It was good. As a non-comic fan, it was a good movie, but something seemed lacking. Can't put my finger on it. Thor was better.

If it helps, I feel exactly the same as you do, except that I haven't seen Cap yet.

Well... to be honest I have stayed away from "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" because I was so disappointed by Burton's remake of the first movie (starring Markie Mark.) "Planet" should have been great - but it was a missed opportunity in spite of the fact that it was actually closer to Pierre Boulle's original novel.

I did finally watch by accident the "Rise" trailer. While I agree that the special effects and the CGI look spectacular, I didn't get a good feel for it. Maybe I need to give it a chance. After all, Andy Serkis and WETA did some awesome stuff with motion capture for Peter Jackson's "King Kong." I just can't believe that any amount of CGI could surmount Roddy MacDowell's portrayal of Caesar - and the fact that Ricardo Montalban as his "adoptive human father" is missing just kills me. The whole point of the original "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" was that even after all of the cruelty that the apes were subjected to, they took over and chose to be more humane to their former masters. Or rather, Caesar decreed that it should be so and he had the greatest grudge to bear of them all.

Sorry to have written you a novel in response, but you did ask.:)

Oddly, I was just complaining to someone that you can't remake "Fright Night" without Roddy McDowell.

What's with the "Replace Roddy" Movement this summer?

(One of the things that's bugging me about the reviews for the "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" are comments like "Groundbreaking" and "Movies will never be the same again." Why do I feel that's outrageous hyperbole?)

EDIT: Damn it! I just saw whom they're using to replace Roddy in "Fright Night" and now my loyalties are so very conflicted! I may have to see it after all...and that's something I haven't said in awhile about a film.

It's probably not a good idea to just take the exact same setup and run it again. As long as the roles are different though I see no problem with running a good theme again. Particularly if a different mod does it.

I agree with Quebbs. I often find it interesting to see how two different mods run games with the same theme. Personal style, new game mechanics, different selection of roles/characters - it really makes it enjoyable to see variety and a creative new direction come into play.

I finally got around to watching Black Swan and can't say I cared for it. Natalie Portman looked anorexic and her character was so spazzed out that I couldn't find her attractive. Mila Kunis was her usual hawt self, true, but even the sex scenes didn't have any sizzle for me. Overall, I found Black Swan to be over-hyped and I can't fathom how it landed Portman an Oscar for best actress. Maybe it's my jaded personal point of view, but this movie really felt like wasted time that I am never getting back. Go figure.

I agree on the same setup thing. Some roles have surprise parts to them that would be spoiled the second time around. The character list would be as well. What I emant was running the same theme with a different set-up.

Personally, I think I could never run the same theme twice. I likely put all my good ideas into the first run. I would, however, be ecstatic if another mod were to choose a theme I've already run and have a go at it. mainly because if I ran it, I would likely know a good bit about the theme and would be in heaven. But also because I would get to see what sort of ideas sprouted from a different vantage point.

Understood. I get that being anorexic was part of her character and her obsessiveness. It still didn't make Portman look attractive or add anything worthy to the sensuality contained in the film.

2. Awards are not given out for best sex scene. At least not at the Academy Awards.

Agreed. Even sex scenes aside, though, I didn't feel that there was anything Oscar-worthy in her performance. Heck, what Portman did in "Leon the Professional" and "V for Vendetta" was way better than what she did in "Black Swan". I just don't get how this role landed her the Oscar - but then again I don't get how the Academy Awards decide on these things. It always seems like smoke and mirrors to me.

The only way I can see a stright rerun working is if it was transplanted onto another site where there is a completely new batch of players with no prior knowledge about the mod running it.

Well, even a considerably modified rerun, I would argue. The problem is that even if players are operating on misinformation (Thanks to changing up the roles), the game is still going to be irrevocably broken. The confusion you want the players to have, isn't going to be the confusion they will have.

So, yeah, I agree.

DarqFeonix
08/05/2011, 12:06
I wouldn't say it was broken if a new mod/new approach was done. Hell, look at ABF games, he's done the "same" theme before, and just switched it up.

In the Princess Bride example... my game was a Reverse-Mafia. It could just have easily been the other way and been a completely different game.

Now, just running the same game again... you're right, that wouldn't work. Although it'd be funny to see someone try :)
