View Full Version : To "All Stars" or not to "All Stars"?
Not the first time I've asked this question, I know, but I need to ask it again.
Usually, I rotate my games. AS, then something else, then AS, etc. Since TV Mafia is more than half over, it is time for me to contemplate my next game. Using the pattern, All Stars would be next, but I find myself wondering if it is worth it.
All Stars games are not easy to plan, especially when I am trying to use roles from so many games and give mods some input over the roles. They are really, the only game I run where a large number of players isn't just proffered, but pretty much mandatory. The last couple AS games have been smaller than I wanted, and I wasn't happy with how they turned out. They weren't as balanced as my games usually are and weren't as fun to mod.
So, the question is, should I try it again? Is there the interest in All Stars games still?
I'd love input from everyone.
If it matters, these are the games we'd be looking at:
The Apocalypse - Rapture
Mod: VenomDaBomb
All Stars 8

Monty Python's Flying Mafia
Mod: loganspeedo

Star Wars - A New Hope

Mafia All Stars 9
Mod: Magnito
Looking at the list, it's the same mods over and over. Probably because I started my policy that I was only using games from mods that are still around. So it becomes a small list of people who modded games back then and are still playing today.
If you really aren't feeling it, I'd run another game, and then see if you're feeling All-Stars. It might just be that you're a little burned out at the concept.
It's not that I'm not feeling it, it's that I'm uncertain that the interest remains in the community.

I'd be interested and depending on theme probably be interested in what ever else you'd run next

Ever considered doing a dealer's choice allstars? Like, using any roles from past games that strike your fancy, without the mods or players having prior knowledge of which would be included? Basically, an allstars of allstars game. Gives you a lot more room to make a balanced game, because you are not limited to a set number, and it makes it harder to meta, because so many different games could possibly be included.
Just a thought.
Another alternative would be if you wanted to collaborate with me on a game. I've been wanting to do another mod partnership, and if you were interested, it could be fun.

Try it this way. Might be easier on you. And holy cow, I'm represented three times. That hasn't happened in forever.

No offense, but when it comes to modding, I don't play well with others. Every time I've tried, the game either never took off or I ended up taking complete control.
I love your Allstar games, even though I've only played in a handful. I would certainly support a new effort. If I still had my old roles, you could have included Revolutionary Girl Utena and Thunderbolts (but they are long gone).
Actually, I will check something for you.

Easier to plan? Maybe. Mentally, no. I have a system when it comes to making All Stars games. Doing what TBB suggests would require me to break it, and I can't really do that. I pretty much run this game, or I stop running All Stars.
Besides, even if I could do it, I'd probably just end up picking roles from just my own games. I always tend to favor my own roles when designing All Stars games anyways.
If you want to include one of my games, feel free to. Utena has the roles still, so I could even submit those if you wanted.
I'll play regardless.

I love All stars and will keep playing. Been looking forward to having one of my games featured too.
Would it be an option to let the number of games correspond to the number of players - i.e. if you get 27 players you use 18 games as source material?

You know I'm always in for n All Stars game, and we have a lot of new blood lately that might have a good time with it.
That being said... if your OCD could handle it, I'd still root for an Anonymous All Stars game
Both are such niche games that I think combining them would scare people away. That said, after All Stars (or possibly, in lieu of) Anonymous will be the next game. Havn't chosen a theme yet, but I have a few ideas.

Anonymous would be awesome. I skipped your last All Stars game cause Im a little soured to have lost near the end of your last two games to mafia traitor (or a similar mechanic). I really really really hate mafia traitor and I would rather miss a great game than get screwed like that again in the end. Sorry.
I think I just made a decision.
I am going to run anonymous next, because I haven't done one of those in a while. Also, if I take a break from All Stars, I think I can then change how I do it without it bugging me too much.
After that, I will run a new type of All Stars game (possibly a re-launch of the series, depending how it goes). Instead of confining myself to certain game and only drawing roles from them, I will confine myself to certain mods.
I will PM mods and let them submit any role from any one of their games. New games, old games, it doesn't matter. Much more of a Free-for-All, as All Stars should be. The original goal of All Stars was to give interesting roles a new life and that is what it should be. There were interesting roles from way back that never got a second life, why not let them come back? As long as mods are still giving me roles, and I still design the roles the way I used to... I could handle that.
Yes, it will always bug me that I stopped the old format mid-way, but it was a loosing battle. I was never going to catch up to where games are today and was just falling more and more behind. This gives me a chance to revamp.
Okay. That's the plan.

I believe there's always interest and love for them from the player base. It's whether or not you still have interest and love for them, Mags.

I only played in the flower game but it was awesome. I loved that role! Definitely down for anonymous.
