View Full Version : It Ain't Easy Being Green!

Today we spotlight a character not seen since the halcyon days of Hypertime, the first DC HeroClix set! We are very pleased to present the guardian of “the Green”, the unsinkable Earth Elemental himself, Swamp Thing!

Swamp Thing begins play moving onto the battlefield with Phasing/Teleport but it’s his Trait that really gets things moving for our favorite elemental. Swamp Thing’s Out of the Green Trait allows you to place Swamp Thing in hindering terrain up to four squares away from his starting position whenever you give him a move or close-combat action (but before that action is taken)! Talk about maneuverability![...]

I dig the trait. He's great as he is but Mystics TA and indomitable would've made this guy super great.

His dial is great...cool special power...but not indomitable?...looks like supes will be recruitin swamp-thing soon
AWESOME!!! I've been wanting a new version of him for a while. Superman set is turning out to be Incredible!!

Oh Mr. Nightcrawler, I've got someone I'd like you to meet. You too Batman
the special powers are cool, but id have to agree that the lack of indomitable is a disappointment.
147 points? I guess that's why the characters in the Brightest Day set added up to 750 points...

Lol, it's the new OOTS Figure. Out of the Swamp, Swamp Man!
I love the trait, it's basically a somewhat nerfed version of OOTS Batman's trait, but it has the added effect of keeping figures out of terrain with the poison ability. That is EFFIN Sweet!

He has the Brighest Day keyword, close enough, I guess.
I'm so LOVING this figure! A lot of terrain control with his terrain-based poison and semi-OOTS capabilities.

Swamp thing + Krakora map= very annoying
Has anybody's noticed that his "Nature's Assault" power can be used to deal with all your pesky activation click needs? Just park your guys in hindering in the starting zone and use Swampy on them for activation without even anybody getting a token. It works on friendlies!

Not a bad representation of Swamp Thing. He isn't the brick that the HT version was and he could easily have higher numbers, indomitable and maybe a SP that allows for Regen while in water like Groot, but he is very playable with his trait and stealth busting power.
He and Floronic Man make a deadly duo.
Bat-Phreak
08/19/2011, 11:56
I would have preferred they added maybe 20-30 points to his cost and given him Indomitable.
Otherwise, a very good figure!!
Too bad the SP and Trait used the phrase "Printed Hindering Terrain." Swampy could have made good use of the the Free Action Smoke Clouds out there!! ;)

Old awesome Swamp Thing sculpt will be on this dial in a heartbeat.
He and Floronic Man make a deadly duo.
If you're thinking of Floronic Man's crazy Smoke Cloud power, that doesn't work with Swampy's stuff (which requires printed hindering). However, they would be a fun plant theme :)
This Man-Thing copy can be used to represent Man-Thing and his fear burning skills!

I wouldn't call it nerfed, as he doesn't have to start in hindering to use it, unlike Batman. It's not always easy to find two patches of hindering within range and LOF of each other. It's pretty easy to get to a spot that's within 4 of hindering though. ;)
I love him. I would've liked Indom as well, but he's pretty darned good. Seems like a nice, fun dial that captures the character well.

he doesnt get the WL Keyword because in all he was never a White Lantern persay...but was key in the Brightest Day Arch. (this is in response to someones post ealier :)
I REALLY REALLY want this piece. i praise God that since the Street Fighter Set got me so hooked that there is only two pieces so far from this set that are a must have and this guy and Maxwell Lord are equally obsessive wants lol
man, this Swamp Thing is going to be so abusive!!!

Yes, Mystics & :d-indomitable: should've been on this fig.
He and Floronic Man make a deadly duo.
Don't laugh. I traded for multiple Floronic Man and I'll be playing this team once I get Swamp Thing.
Disappointed. He's a SR, too, which I feel should have had a better dial because of it.
Eleven clicks of life plus the Mystics TA & :d-indomitable: would have been perfect for his 147pts. Or even keeping the current dial and adding the Mystics TA, :d-indomitable: and the Regen Trait of Wolverine & Lobo.

Old awesome Swamp Thing sculpt will be on this dial in a heartbeat.
My first thought as well.
I like this version, dial-wise. Finally some regenerative ability, which was completely missed on the old REV.
Plus he and V Icons Supes are 398 points.
Kinda lame that both the SR's I want so far (Swampy and Black Adam) have sculpts I don't particularly care for compared to older ones.
EDIT- And it sucks immensely that he's an SR, btw.
EDIT 2 - I'm fine without Mystics and indomitable, tbh, but what gets me is lack of :m-dolphin:. :disappointed:

I think this sculpt is miles better. It looks like it could use a repaint, but it looks much more like a Swamp Thing pose to me.
So far, there are no pieces in this set that I don't want. I think it's gonna rock!

Are you kidding? He doesn't need indomitable if he can attack anyone in hindering 4 squares away as a FREE action! Not to mention the fact that he doesn't even have to roll to hit, he just does 1 damage for free! Plus, he can move up to 12 on his own. That gives him a total range of 16 where he can move and then attack in hindering. He may be the most effective stealth-busting machine out there.

I agree. He has plenty of other coolness to make up for the lack of :d-indomitable:. I'm glad we are getting him. I just feel bad for all the hardcore stealthers out there, nowhere to run/hide lately. My buddy mentioned there needs to be a Batman with a stealth that can't be seen through. Just on Bats though because he is that good (sometimes).

This all the way for me.
He's an ok piece, but a SR so not easy to grab. He's properly costed but doesn't bring the house down at half of your build so he's one of those decent but not great SRs. I like that type though too. Just seems to me like he'll see more casual constructed or even high build play than he will anything else.

I agree, it would have been nice to pair him with darkstar. Like GSX Storm he is reliant on map choice to be very powerful. Playing him on Krakoa would probably be most advantageous to him.
I was actually hoping that he would have the 11 clicks of health like the old ones.

Well, he's great against Stealthed figures with no damage reducers who won't be able to effectively counter-attack him after they take one click, sure. Are there any pieces like that out there?
He'd be better (and IMO, more accurate) with Indom. Not that he's bad as-is. :)

Yeah, I went to a brick (from my normal case+) with the Cap set, and my initial pre-order of this set was a brick. I've since upped that to a case. I'm still considering upping it further. It's looking like a pretty awesome set!

Im actually a little shocked he does not have any stealth......not that it helps with this set.......just always remember him being able to blend into the forest. Still amazing piece though. And yes mystics and indom. And those who dont like the sculpt this is an awesome sculpt from when he had to fight superman to save his life because of the meteorite shown on the sculpt. He was super hardcore there though it must not be that one, no support....oh well I still want it :-D

It's probably been said, but for his price and status of a super rare...where is the Impervious, Mystical Key Word, Indomitable and White lantern Corps key Word?
But...he does have the Mystical Keyword.
We're guessing the Brightest Day Keyword is there in lieu of the White Lantern Corps.
:d-indomitable:? This is prolly just similar to what happened with Power Girl. They'll errata him to say he should have :d-indomitable: and the Mystics TA.
The Floronic Man team up would stil be fun, but the designation of "printed hindering" is an interesting limitation on that.
Pity because it would make thematic sense with Floronic Man.
Has anyone else seen a reference to printed hindering? I can't think of one.
I know people want to play him on the Krakoa map because of the abundance of hindering terrain, but I'd be reluctant in the 17% chance it becomes blocking every turn (and hurting Swamp Thing in the process). For hindering heavy maps that won't damage me, I look more toward the BatB Graveyard or the SI Crashed Spaceship maps.
Also, all figures do not need Indomitable. Get over it.

No, they don't. But Swamp Thing is one of those characters that doesn't tire. Indom fits.

08/19/2011, 17:10
Since no figure in the game really feels like Swamp Thing to me, I'll stick with the Hypertime rookie for half the cost.
I'll give this guy a try, though. I really like the old 80's comics.

08/19/2011, 17:15
I, for one, am glad that he does NOT have the Mystics TA. I like that mostly for demonic characters and spell-slingers, I don't see it as very appropriate for Swampthing.
You LIKE that old sculpt?
I think this sculpt is miles better. It looks like it could use a repaint, but it looks much more like a Swamp Thing pose to me.
The HT Swampthing's pose isn't especially awesome, but the detail on the sculpt is incredible. I've got no opinion about which one looks better (need to see the new one in person), but I won't stand idly by while someone denigrates the original.
I agree, it would have been nice to pair him with darkstar. Like GSX Storm he is reliant on map choice to be very powerful. Playing him on Krakoa would probably be most advantageous to him.
It really isn't, unfortunately. Swampthing wants to occupy Hindering and he wants his opponents to occupy Hindering. The former isn't wise on Krakoa and because of that, the latter can't be counted on.
I was actually hoping that he would have the 11 clicks of health like the old ones.
Me too, but regen at least helps make up for it.

08/19/2011, 17:27
Another thing that makes him great is that neither Out of the Green nor Nature's Assault need any sort of Line of Fire. He can be safely on the other side of a wall and still 'poison' with Nature's Assault, or pop through with Out of the Green. He's going to love maps like the Junkyard and the Crash Site with loads of hindering everywhere.
brevard321
08/19/2011, 17:42
It looks like a fun dial, but of course:
It needs Mystics

to be accurate.
Did anyone mention that yet, or do I have to be the first?

I like it.
There's just one problem.
There's no limit to Swamp Thing's free action special power.
So he can keep dealing damage since there's no limit to the numbers of free actions a character can make.
Also, while Indomitable would have been accurate, I'd prefer the 147 price tag as opposed to 156 with indomitable or 183 with indomitable and Mystics.

Free actions are now defined as "once per turn" as a default per the 2011 Rules.
A character may not activate the same game effect twice in one turn with free actions, unless the game effect indicates otherwise.

I think you and I must have different definitions of "denigrate". I never particularly liked the original, but that's mostly because of the pose. It looks like a zombie pose, not a Swamp Thing pose. It's dead boring (okay, there's some denigration for you ;)). YMMV, but it has nothing to do with a detail problem.

He's like a Hypertime Vet+. He adds just *a little* more playability then those 9 year old versions of Swamp Thing, but it really seems like it was designed by someone who had a casual knowledge of Swamp Thing. Otherwise, his 'Out of the Green' SP would work with water terrain too.
'Cause, you know he's *Swamp* Thing. :classic:
Overall as an update to an old figure, I'd give Eric Englehard a C+. It feels like he just looked at the old figure and kept a roughly the same power set (Phasing, Super Strength, damage reducer) then peppered in some SP's that seem right for a plant based hero.
The mark was definitely missed on this guy, but not a complete waste. Just a partial waste.

Not what I expected, but in the case of clix I rarely get what I expect. I think there was a catch phrase there once upon a buyout.
Anyway, If I pull a Swampthing, that would be very cool, and I'd find an excuse to play him for sure. If I don't pull him in sealed, then I might grab one down the road a bit. If he had been Indomitable and a had the Mystic TA I might have bought a case of this set, but since he's not than I'll only be investing enough to play a few sealed games and a few figures that I really want. :)
Anyway, I've now seen Swamp Thing and I would like to play him sometime if I get the chance.

The lack of aquatic is mostly to save points, it seems, however few it would. Because with his OOTS-trick, he's not going to actually be moving THROUGH water Terrain all that much.
Also, why do people keep demanding Indomitable on EVERYBODY? I mean, sure, he's pretty unstoppable, but I don't think he really needs it. It'd be nice, but I think Mystics is a much larger oversight when it comes to his dial.

swamp thing eats $#!t. literally
though this reminds me of the green thumb from freshmen, a vegetarian that gains the ability to talk to plants and discovers they don't like being eaten.
could mr holland get indomitable? ofcourse, it would make sense
but does alec need indomitable? not with his SP. he has lots of damage dealing potential (or at least outright hindering-occupation deterrence) on every turn. and with plenty on this thread questioning his playability at 147 pts, i doubt many would want to field him at 177, indom or no.
as for :m-dolphin: and mystics, i'd have been more inclined to see him get the :m-dolphin: as far as how game effects would translate but he really doesnt need that either. given his dial with lots of phasing/teleport, not to mention his OOTS, it'd be a lot like giving colossal boy :m-wing:. sure he deserves it, but his other abilities (:g-giant: AND leap/climb) make it rather superfluous

Gotta be Starboy/Starman. MUCH more controversial than Brainy, and we know he's in the set.
I guessing Earthman. Why is Starman controversial?
Its good to see a new swamp thing that is good and reflects swampys powers better.
