Loading Times Petition

First off, I want to thank and congratulate the HCRealms staff for their new layout. It is really beautiful. It makes the sight look that much more professional and techno-savvy. It’s really great guys. I think we all agree that it is one of the coolest looking sites out there.

However, it was better the old way. I’m not saying I like the old look better; the new look is a lot cooler, albeit a little bit dark for comic-based games, but still a lot nicer all around. The problem is that it is too graphic/plug-in heavy. We don’t need the three backgrounds (striped, gray, wording). We don’t need the 30 odd smileys (they are super cool, but not totally necessary). We really don’t need the “Post Reply” section at the end of every thread. If we’re going to post, we will click on the “Post Reply” or “Quote” buttons.

Us poor folk with 56k connections now hate this web site. In the past, I’d go to “New Posts” and open about 5 new windows with the different posts I wanted to read. By the time I had finished opening those windows, the first topic was already loaded and ready to be read. Now, I have to wait a good 2 minutes for one to open. If I try to open more than one at once, I might as well go mow the lawn while I wait. After a while, I get frustrated and just leave. This is a post-based forum. Its liveliness depends on people opening up threads and posting. I don’t want to do that because it’ll take about 10 minutes for me to open a thread, click to the next page, post, wait for my post to get there, and then see it put up three down from where I stared typing. Much less going back and spending 5-6 minutes editing a mistyped word in one of my posts.

I don’t think I’m the only one. I read several posts in the “What do you think about our new look” thread that were about the same problem. Even people with DSL have complained as well. (I have 56K at work & DSL at home – It does take longer than normal to load at home but not nearly as bad as at work.) A good number of us would rather see the old site than visit the new look.

I propose one of two things. Either find a way to make it load better and faster or go back to the old look until you can find a compromise between the old load times and the new look. In hopes of the staff doing this I have begun this petition for the site to be fixed. I’m not saying I don’t like it, or that I don’t appreciate your hard work and tremendous effort. I love you guys to no end. I don’t know where I’d be without you. But right now, with the extremely long load times for a post-based forum, I am without you. I’m busy scrubbing my toilets while I wait to open a thread and bathing the dog while I wait for my post to be applied.

Who is with me?

Mine is a little slow but not that slow, the problem i have is, every time you go to a different web site, and then come back to hcrealms, it never updates itself! i have lost so many trades because of this, my PM box shows 0 but when i click on it it shows like 8 or 9 new PM's, now it didn't do that on the OLD version!:disappoin

Guys,

Last night Typhon posted in the newest news item thread(HC Forum Layout Changes) the reason for the slowdowns. The Realms staff is updating one of the Web Servers and while that server is being updated the sites have all been moved to the second web server which is causing the slow downs. Once the update is complete(which should be soon) the sites will be split between the two servers again and the problem will be resolved.

Simpler is better. Forget the splash. Functionality over style is the way to go.

It has speed up quite a bit from previously, but I agree that simpler is better. Sorry about the rant, everybody. It was just that I prefer simple, easy to use, friendly sites to pretty boys.

I'm with you Badges2. And Druss, Typhoon also said that he was going to lighten up the colors to make it easier to read... but that hasn't happened either. It's still dark dreary grey & black. Never good colors for superheros!

Is HCR screwing up? This died days ago. All of these post (with this exception) weren't on the 31st, they were on the 28th. Weird. O_o

Maybe I'm right, then. We just might have to go back to the old ways.
