View Full Version : The problem with the sheild team ability and why WK's banned it from touneys April
So I'm at a tourney today in Las Vegas and my fellow clixers and I are all doing are thing when the judge of the event said "As of April 16/17 all clix with the shield team ability are banned from tourneys". What? When did this happen and how come I haven't read anything about this? Not that I use a tremendous amount of shield figures but, if this is true, WK's is shooting themselves in the foot. I asked her what this was in regards to and she couldn't easily explain it. After doing some checking I've still yet to come across this ruling. Can anyone verify this information for me? If so what's next? No wild card team ability? These amendment's are going to far. I'm not a huge fan of the EE stacked shield bonus combo but you don't hear my crying about it.

If they were going to ban shield team, they wouldnt have had the swat clix being on said team.
Wizkids has no plans on banning any regular figures from tourney play, especially a whole team. Whoever this judge was , was so full of b.s.

Sounds like someone with their own agenda to me. It can't possibly be official. JonL has come to this site numerous times, and has stated in no uncertain terms that no HC figure will EVER be banned from tournement play other than promotional figures. If you paid good money for it, it will always be legal. PERIOD.

Hey Bad,
I know where you're playing and I usually play there as well. In no distinct terms, what was the situation. Cuz I'd love to have a chat with her about that. How many people and how many kids were in the tourney? And what were the prizes up for grabs.
Thanks,
David

Well we were building our teams and there was some debate as to whether or not XP figures would be included. Since there were a few new people with limited figures she decided it would be best not to exclude those people with a majority of XP. When another player was considering using the E Ultron team she saw what was going on and mentioned that in some FAQ or board ruling, she read that as of April 16th or 17th that figures with the shield ability would be banned from legal tourney play. I mentioned that I'm sure with all the moaning about the shield bonus/EE combo was the reason for the decision. She said it was in regards to some obscure situation that was unrelated to the explanation I offered. needless to say, we were all flabbergasted. I decided to keep my gripes to myself until I could look into it later when I got home. Well I didn't find anything about that ruling anywhere so I decided to appeal to the HCRealms community for help. So far, the general consensus is that is that it's bull shyte. There was only 1 kid (her son) and the rest of us were adults. About 9 or 10 of us. I'm sure if you go to Kool Kollectables than you know Roland and Steve. The prizes were Clint Barton (which I won YEAHHHH) George Tarleton and Mandroid Armor (Agent Frenchy). In all fairness though, the first game I played was against the kid (who is very smart for his age), the second game was against a guy who had never played before but the third game ahhh the third game was one of the most challenging matches I ever had. I give it up to Steve for giving me a run for my money. I see your in Canada but if anyone reading this lives in the Las Vegas area there is a tournament tomorrow going on at Cheese Boy Comics in Henderson. It's a 400pt Mastermold Sentinel scenario game. Maybe I'll bring my 3-D terrain for laughs. Come by and say hi and talk clix or whatever.

If they are going to ban the shield team ablity I certain they are going to ban enhancement characters as well. Coz that's what the shield ablity basically does, plus enhancement doesn't cause you to use a action. Personally Shield ability is evened out by the fact that you have to use one of your actions for that turn to use it. What's so wrong with that? I think that Judge is just trying to make it easier for her kid to win.. Sorry Bad it looks like you're getting hoaxed. At least you won the LE!

It is total bull and most likely just a house rule
Yup.
It is TOTAL bull. This would go against the spirit of the game, the rules, the FAQ (God help us...) etc etc
Of course, it can be a house rule - although IMHO it's a silly one - but there is NO WAY that banning figures from tourney play fits in with any existing WizKids policy. Way back, (a Year ago) Steenbock (Moderator) of all people argued against banning dupes because "players should be able to use what they get in the box".
IF WK did implement a blanket rule of this type (they won't - it would be too silly by far...) then any sane Judge would simply implement a house rule that they were allowed...

Nah. Despite her apparently being wrong on this ruling, she's usually right about 99% of the time. She's always on the up and up and would never cheat. If her son wins it's because he played a good game. I guess we will just have to play this one by ear and see if someone from WK's can put this rumor to rest once and for all.

She might have seen it on the April FAQ thread in the Judges forum on the WizKids website. It was thrown in as a joke because the person who posted it doesn't care too much for the figs. If she read the rest of the posts she would have seen that it was just a jab at the Shield team not an OFFICIAL rule.
Paraphrase from the WizKids forum.

"That was apparantly a bad joke. Or a good one. Sometimes I don't get "jokes".
Anyway, it was a reference to the Objects being akin to any figure (hey even an LE, which tend to be rare), and the new ruling that players can't use the new Objects unless both agree to, which is rare ("sure, my ranged combat team wants to see your Hypersonic Superman or Charging She-Hulk with an undestroyable Dumpster or a +1 damage Soda machine).
Kinda like a player saying "I veto your use of SHIELD because I don't have any" or something like that.
Just for the record, I think they should be allowed, but I understand why they are not unless both players agree."

Hey Bad,
I didn't know who you were until you talked about your 3D bank. We played on that. I was the V Human Torch, V Sandman, and R Shield Sniper team. I got lucky and took out your Vulture first. Anyway, glad you won the hawkeye. That's wicked. Good luck and see ya next time.
Oh yeah I know she's on the up and up.... I just wanted to see where exactly that ruling came from....we're pretty chatty when I show up.
Hope Cheeseboy was cool. I'll see ya next Sunday for sure!!
Glad that's sorted out, then.
Nothing to see here, people.
Move along....

I thought anything you bought you were allowed to play. I shelled out 45 bucks so I could have 3 dumpsters for my OW@W 'hobo' Superman. Are they legal in tourney play or not?
Yup, they are legal, but only if your opponent agrees.
Personally, when I run tournaments, and someone wants to use the 3d objects, I make them share with their opponent. That way it evens things out and makes them more likely to be used.

Does anyone else find it highly annoying that they would even joke about a ruling like that in an official judges forum where other judges could read it and then use it in a tournament? I think devo_the_sane should think a little more before he/she speaks, especially since that "ruling" could have cost someone a tournament win and he/she is acting as a spokesperson for WizKids. There is no excuse to post something like that in an official place, especially where people can not tell the tone in which it was said. There is nothing in that post to indicate that it was being said in jest, and it should not have been said in an official forum...

Yes, and no. From the FAQ: "Adventure Kit objects are tournament legal, but may only be used if both players agree to their use." (http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/documents/HCMarvelFAQ031403.pdf)
If you bring them, and you and whoever you are playing agree to use them, then yes. If they don't want to use them, then no they are not legal (for that match). Basically you'll have to ask your "new" opponent before each match. Also, I don't think you'd ever be able to use all 3 dumpsters at the same time... "Each player must place three object tokens on the map during set-up." Unless you can convince your opponent to let you use the adventure kits, then convince them to let you use MIXED adventure kits, then convince them to let ALL of the heavy objects be the dumpsters, I think you are out of luck.

Well since Enhancement can't be used with RCE, but the S.H.I.E.L.D. ability can, I think I would disagree about Enhancement being better. From the FAQ: "While Ranged Combat Expert cannot be used in connection with other powers, it can be used in connection with team abilities. Thus, while a Ranged Combat Expert attack cannot be the target of Enhancement, a S.H.I.E.L.D. figure could add 1 click of damage to that attack by using the S.H.I.E.L.D team ability."

Joking in a judges forum shouldn't be an issue. The only actual rules that have to be followed are in the published materials (rulebooks, PACs, inserts for 3D objects or Sentinal/Sinestro Construct), any errata and the Marvel and DC FAQs. Period. All other rulings are open to the judge's interpretation (and in fact all rules are open to interpretation via house rules). Getting rulings from the forums can help clarify situations, but the are not canon until they appear in a FAQ (and the date for them to go active for tournament play passes). There are very few individuals who actually speak with WizKids' voice and they are easy to identify.
That being said, it can be confusing to keep up with all of the current rulings on different situations since there is no definite repository for the temporary rulings that aren't in a FAQ yet. But judges just need to focus on the rules in print and use their judgement for anything else. As long as they stay consistent about a particular topic everything will be fine. Joking around in forums should not be an issue if the judges stick to the rules/FAQs and make their own choices beyond that.
