View Full Version : Strategies For Taking Out Con Artist
I am having a problem with people playing mass amounts of con artist in my venue's tournaments. I was woundering if anyone has any strategies to help me not loose my best fig first turn and stop the perplexing madness. Thanks
I assume that you're referring to mass CA's, and not just one or two of them.
In general, you'll do well if you dash past the opponents main battle force and start wiping out the CA's. Individually they're only 11 points, but they die, and add up quickly.
You have many choices about what you use against them. Any figure with 8 or more range and multiple arrows is good. Figures with flurry are good, and figures with pulse wave own the CA's.
Figures that combine running shot with pulse wave or mult-target shooting like V Annihillus, Blizzard, Hawkeye, or Cyclops will make short work of the CA's.
If you don't like those, then EV Quicksilver can simply run accross the board by himself and KO the CA's, probably even two per turn.
Alternatively, you can take the Perplexers out of the equation by using barrier (R Ice Man) to block their line of sight.

Energy Explosion or Pulse Wave seems to work well against figures without any defense modifiers.
Yes...it's called action abuse.
They have to push their countless Con Artists to get perplex. Now, that takes actions. A bunch. So, while they're setting up, you need to jump in and pound away. Dr. Sampson works very well for this. So do figures with a 10 range.
Board control is also an option - work LOS and range to your advantage.
Someone mentioned Quicksilver, which would be a good option, so would Nightcrawler. Hit a Con Artist for 2, and they're toast.
Once they get set, and have 6 perplexers (the most I've seen) you're in deep. That takes two FULL rounds to accomplish in a 300 pt game.

very easy. throw on a barrier caster. For 19 points you get Avalance with free movement. barrier blocks line of sight to the affected character. A cheap way to make multiple characters useless.

Boomerang, vulture, and maybe move up a psylocke to help out with Enhancement. If they're close, you can EE them too. :)
Time it carefully...you want to hit unpushed R Con Artists for 2, but for E and V that will just help them get onto their Perplex.
Doom and V Bullseye are a nice anti-Con artist team, with the Running Shot, then Bullz with three targets. Then when you Mastermind onto Bullseye, he can keep his attack value. Shame the Doom only has 2 targets.
Anything with multiple shots(V Hawkeye, V Bullseye, Boomerangs, ect) with an enhancer and a taxi if they lack running shot, anything with energy explosion can mess them up(be careful not to hurt the Con Artists to your opponents favor), enhancment and a taxi can help here too. Flurry, and hypersonic speed work well too. When all else fails you can drop a thug infront of them.

beat the snot out of the guy they are going to perplex. They are rather easy pickings once the brunt of the opposing force is gone.

I still say surrounding his backside with a barrier would negate that. You wouldn't even have to work that hard. A well placed barrier can even seperate a shooter from his taxi.

Vet Ultron! BOOM!! BOOM!BOOM!! Dead Con Artists! Whoo!...of course the barrier only protects you for one turn, next turn Avalanch is toast....

Well then I'll just use two of him.

uhm, about perplex, i dont think its effects can be stacked right? so really youre only dealing with a plus one to all of the stats of one fig, during that persons turn - while this can be big, that takes 44pts to achieve, and is easily countered. Energy explosion, running shot, pulse wave barrier, or making your opponent come to you, then using shadowcat and whatever your flavor of punishment - i love this one personally, fly thru the bad guys, and jack their support, v boomerang could also do the job if they were grouped - can you say splash damage? it would be 2 3 2 correct? i mess up splash damage sometimes. and besides, anyone who fields such a cheese laden army needs to just go home and sit in a corner and think about what theyve done. thats something i could really get started on - the people who have never had an original thought in their life. them and rules lawyers/abusers - as they tend to be one and the same, but i digress - in the end i dont think CA swarms will be a major factor in the Heroclix future

Well as I learned yesterday, Perplex can be stacked.
Like for example if Hulk has a raw damage of 5, four Con Artists could perplex his damage up to 9 (+1, +1, +1, +1). This has completely changed the way I see my Batman enemy team members now :p

hmmm, that doesnt seem correct to me. i think someones bending the rules to their favor on that one. or else wizkids truly has borken heroclix, which i hope is not the case

It's in the latest FAQ, it's official. Just look under 'Perplex'.

Firstly, there is no April FAQ available 'yet', and trust me, the ruling on Perplex is there. Try ldownloading the DC FAQ, don't worry it being DC, the rules are universal to it also applies to Marvel.
Check again, it says that perplex can be stacked

This would be the basis of my Hulking Hoes team.
Savage Hulk, cheap taxi, vet avalanche, and flesh out the rest of your points with Con Artists.
Im seeing a hulk making a sonic clap with a range of 10 doing 10+ damage..........
I am all about perplexing up range and taxing either Phoenix or Mandarin. At 13 range, if you taxi up 10 spaces you should be able to take them out!
Wow! these strats help out a lot. Thanks everyone for your posts, I have to use these in future marvel tournament I go to.

If CA's are adjacent use Energy Explosion pumped up with SHIELD. In a 300 point game you should be able to wipe out all of them in one fell swoop.

Another good option is Perplex. A figure like Dr Strange, possibly with Hydra support and/or a little Perplex of his own, can stop the Con Artists' front man cold.

I was thinking about this some more...incapacitate and mind control would be great against Perplex teams...make sure that the "hitters" for the con artist swarm never get a chance to take an action. Even better if you can use their hitters to take down the hookers.
Think about this: forget about stacking The Hulk's damage. Perplex his range if you have 5 or 6 Perplexers. Imagine a Hulk that can do damage without even being BtB. *shudder*
