View Full Version : Why soar????

What exactly are the benefits of soaring and when, strategically, should a clix take to the air?

This is a part of the game that I've never taken advantage of, because I can't find a good use for it.

Well, if you happen to have the LE superman, you can use soaring to enhance his hypersonic attack. Swoop down, advance, blast away, retreat, resume soaring. It can be very hard to deal with.

Ah ha! Still no replies...soaring must be for the birds then.

ouch. sorry.

You soar to keep from stopping once you get BtB with an opposing fig, you want to keep the ranged combat enemies from using full range, or you just don't want to get KO'ed by Bane, She-Hulk, or any other close combat figs.

It can be useful for LE superman. Get up within his charge range, but out of your opponent's outwit range. 'Course, there's nothing stopping them from moving their outwitter closer:)

Oh, it's also sometimes the only way to get at a fig you want to attack (or to get back to a medic perhaps). Say there's other enemy figs in between, which you would have to stop next to if you took the straight-line distance. Going around them may mean it's a further distance than you can move. But sometimes you can go over the top, so to speak. Change elevations so you're not adjacent when you pass them, and then take the straight path. Come back down on the other side, voila!

Hope that makes sense. I'm about to leave work, so typing quickly!

Simaler to using it with hypersonic speed it is usefull with running shot of charge expesically with iron-man.

Well, the obvious answer is...

The view is better when you're soaring !

explain key-gun, if I hear you right then you're dead wrong, you can not continue the move with charge or rs after you've attacked

I believe he just means you can soar move in and then charge or rs. You get the advantage of being harder to hit when soaring (as in range is reduced, but its not that hard really)

I also have seen two other rare uses of soaring...

1. Thanos was on his regenerate click and really wanted to get out of the heat so he went soaring and moved way off in the corner on top of building to get some piece and regenerate. But this only worked bacuase the person playing against them had lost all there flying guys.

2. When people do that annoying thing of placing a barrier completely around a character, a character that can soar can still move out, where as one that cannot obviously is kinda screwed without help from others.

I often soar when taxiing to jump over a fray and positioning the fare.

Soaring is terribly underrated- I've seen several games decided by the points saved on a heavily wounded but soaring fig.

Speaking of soaring I just remembered a question.

Can a soaring figure use outwit on a grounded figure ? It's not an attack. Is it subject to the half range rule too ?

soaring figures cannot interact with grounded figures at all.

Unless theres some ruling I dont know about.

BTW, outwit is not effected by soaring. It still has the same 10 range.

Chess, see page #6 of the FAQ.

Outwit is subjected to half-range reduction when used against a soaring target.

wow, they changed that then.. lol

I believe you have to stop when you get BtB with a figure, soaring or not (FAQ). So it really is even less useful (only 2 uses left, + U Supes...).

If your opponent is using primarily grounded figures, you can play hell with his ranged attacks by shifting back and forth between soaring and hovering. It's a waiting game, though...

The best use for Soaring that I actually used was at a Tourney I played awhile ago.

The Tourney played with the scenarios in the Rulebook.

The scenario I used Soaring was the one where an "object" is placed in the middle of the map and the winner after so many turns/time is the person who is still holding the "object."

I had one of my flyers grab it and then go Soaring. He just flew away to a corner of the map while the rest of my team kept the opponent occupied. It helped that my opponent had only one or two flyers that didn't have the range/speed my flyer did.

A soaring character can be used to block LOS. Imagine: Your opponent's V Bullseye wants to shoot your Dare Devil, who is ten spaces away. But he can't because you've placed your Soaring R Vulture between the two characters, seven spaces away from Bullseye. Now Bullseye doesn't have a shot on anybody.

And you can use barrier while flying.

I used E Iceman with a 200 pt sentinel in a Wholly Huricane Scneario. Outside, Iceman soared (ignored terrain so little damage was done) while placing barriers to protect the Sentinel.

I have only used it once to get Annihilus away from several wolverines and a swamp thing in a multiplayer game. Unfortunatly as soon as I landed I got hosed

I would like to know were you got your information.

You are incorrect about stopping once you are BtB when Soaring.

Soaring is one of the most ignored "powers" to be used. I used it in a game to get someone within range to finish off another player.

The problem was the middle of the board was a Charlie Foxtrot with figs everywhere. I need to clear the figs So I pic up the fig I wanted to move, went soaring moved my movment and drop the fig where I needed. Yes I used the 2 clicks for Up and Down. It was a turning point in the game. Soaring figs ignore grounded and hover figs for movment so if you need to get from A to B in a straight line Soaring is teh best way to manage that.
