Ok you all know I've posted many theme builds in other threads. Well here I'm gonna give some pointers on non theme builds. Themes give a few good bonuses map choice and 2 or 4 Pc's, but theme very much limits your power and figure selection. If you want to turn the odds in your favor many teams will be non theme.
First think what you want to do. Do you want to tie up you opp's pieces and blast them at range? Do you want to rush them with Impervous brutes and beat them down? Do you want to hit and run? All these things are very possable with the figures avalable.
One figure stands out as the ultimate utility piece for almost any stratagy.
Neco Monro
Her staff of one power lets her do anything needed. She has Leadership to take tokens off your figures, and after she takes a few clicks she gets perplex on top of her staff of one. There are 4 major things some ppl don't think to do with her. One: Regeneration, if she's got nothing to do this round give her regen and heal a few clicks. Two: Attack, She can get RCE, HSS, Psychic Blast. Many ppl overlook her 8 range show them she's no slouch. Three: Poison, Having problems with a high def fiigure like cap or a Super sences figure? Carry her beside the offending figure after he's pushed(great example is Phyla Vell(18Def Supersences) and give her poison. There is some auto damage and now she's easyer to hit. Just remember Neco is a bit fragile so watch for the counter attack. Finally TK: This gives so much range to your other figures it's crazy and since she can't use the same power twice in a row she takes an action to TK then rests (using a free action power like PC) and then the next round can TK again. Neco is a staple on many of my non theme teams.
More to come if you have a figure that you think is a game breaker tell us.
Nico is a great utility piece, but far to fragile for her points. She works well for the teams that like to turtle as she can be kept well hidden and just provide support. But if you have an offensive based team you're better off looking for other options.

If my opponent is more conserned with Neco than my main attackers that's fine with me :-). It most likely will take at least 2 solid attacks to kill Neco. That's 2 Solid attacks that my main force is not beeing subjected to and if they don't finish her she ends up with perplex and her staff of one power for a dbl wammy or evin regenerating. If she ever becomes the biggest threat on my team I'm ether just about dead or my opponent is very misinformed :-)
Oh, no... it's not that I'd be spending the time going after Nico. For the points I'd rather have another attack piece (especially in this format) and not have those points tied up in a glorified support piece. Give me Moonstone or Venom plus a medic for the same point cost. :classic:

Or Gimmee Star-Lord for 6 points more!!

The point is if your looking for versitile utility there is no better piece. Your team has 316 pts to feild punch. One round she's outwit the next she's TK or support(She is the best Marvel AV Support without an asguardien Diety in HCO)

Agree with everything. Probably the best overall support fig in the game. She's a genuine Swiss Army Knife!
She could arguably fill a role of multiple support figs... TK'er, Medic, etc. The only drawback being she can't push to do the same thing.
But in these shortened games where KOs count, I'd rather spend the 84 points on another attack piece that's going to be (hopefully) racking me up some points! It's personal prefernce.

So lets see. You agree with me but it's not your style. Ok I can dig that. How about adding somthing you "have" to have on your non theme teams then :-)
I don't know that there is a "must have". If you've got an Asgardian Diety on your team, then Valkyrie is probably a must have. If you don't have a way to deal with move/attack pieces very well, then R or E Black Panther is handy. It's all kind of situational.
I suppose if I was to pick one piece it would be R Jean Grey. For 31 points she's a big range extender.

ok lets look at cheap utility then
As you mentioned R Jean gray is a must for cheap TK at 31 pts
R Black Panther for cheap outwit who is also stealthed at 27 pts
R Scarlet Witch is cheap PC at 29 pts
Both R Panther and R Witch also have TA's that let them reposition as a free action which adds to their usefullness.
Cheapest support is R Hydra Medic 12 pts 7av
these are all solid utility and added together is only 98 pts of good investment if you use them properly and you have the room after your big guns.

Perplex is a bit more of a challange. In the current format the cheapest frontloaded Perplex is 75 pts Skull Brother LE. If you are willing to push a bit Jimmy Woo is only 46 pts has Sheild TA but this is a bit much. Perplex might need to be supplyed by one or more of your bigger pieces. Mr Fantastic shines in this area as his SP Inventive genius gives perplex and if the target shairs a KW with him it dbls the bonus. He can also use it on himself which makes him very versitile. The Galactic Guardiens Dr Strange would be a great addition to this catagory if/when we can use him but currently we can't in league play.

For my money... I'll take Nico every time. In my opinion how can you go wrong with a piece that can do whatever you want them to. It just takes practice on figuring out what is best at any given time.
Dr. Strange will change the game from ranged based to close combat based. I am not looking forward to him simply because I don't like figs that force a particular style of play. *cough*Bencrawler*cough*
For general utility figs I'll throw Doombot 5095 (or whatever) into the ring. He's tough enough to take a hit if you need him to. He's a decent attacker with 8 range and 9 attack (plus EE!). He's got Enhancement. And he's a wild card. All for only 40 points.
In this league he's a great way to get the "3rd set" requirement out of the way.
So, has anyone had any success with a Mystics/Wildcards build? I was able to cobble one together with Enchantress, Maelkith, both FF Doombots, IC Wildcard Daredevil, and IC Wildcard Klaw.
I think it would have done much better if I hadn't been too reckless with Mael, but I was able to get Thor & Loki down half their dial before he realized outwitting my Enhancement pretty much left me unable to hurt him...

I had a good wildcard abuse team with E Ultron, Klaw, Doombot(40) Malkeleth, and some other little figs that worked fairly well.

I agree this is a kick butt utility piece that is often overlooked. With Jean's Xteam and another wild card he becomes an emergency healer, with defenders TA he shairs the other fig's better def, all wile pumping his buddy's damage and throwing out the odd EE. Very worth his pts.

Until it ran into my soldiers. :knockedou ;)
