OK, I know who he is, but I'd like more info on him. Here's what I know.
He first came up in the silver age series. What was this story?
In issue 25 of the current series he claimed Hal was found by Abin Sur because he was closer. True?
Somewhere he acquired a yellow ring (Sinestro's?) and became just Guy Gardner. Fired by the Corps?
Somewhere else along the line he became Guy Gardner Warrior, and can change his body into stuff because of something in his blood.

it is true that hal was chosen because he was closest there were 4-5 other people more qualified but hal was picked because he was the closest.
guy turned out to be of alien descent and thats why he can make weapons with his arms (as far as i know read guy gardener warrior to get most of that story)
he had the yellow ring just before his transformation to "warrior"
sorry its not much but its a start

Ok, here's the deal. Guy Gardner was the super-obnoxious rambo-obsessed member of the GL Corps who pretty much came into his own around the time of Legends. He joined the Justice League (america), and was there for a good long time. At one point in some alternate-world story in Justice League Europe, we learn that Guy would have been chosen as the prime Green Lantern, had Hal not been the closest; and that he would have been the greatest Lantern of all time.
However, being chosen as a "second string" lantern brought all of that rage and self-loathing to the front of Guy's mind, which turned him into the arrogant jerk that he was for so long. Eventually, he left the corps and got a Qwardian yellow ring, and came back to earth and rejoined the JLA for a while with it. He got his own series, and eventually he lost this ring too, and it was revealed that he was the descendant of this really hardcore alien race, and had the ability to do things like simulate weapons out of his body.
So he's had three major incarnations, as a hero. The first two were very similar, power-wise (Green ring, then Yellow ring), and the last one was very different. He'd make a really interesting Clix, if they did him right.
Anything else?

So he was an 'earthling' the entire time until he 'coincidentally' discovered that hardcore alien blood? Or is there more to that story?

Guy was chosen as an equal to Hal, but Hal was closer, this is true, but Guy was not more qualified. The ring tested everyone on the Earth, and found these two men as the most qualified for being fearless and honest on the planet, but Hal was closer and was therefore chosen over Guy.
Guy was then selected as the alternate in case something happened to Hal, Guy would recieve the ring and become Green Lantern. Part of serving as alternate is being made aware of your status, and filling in for emergency while the GL is elsewhere. Guy was filling in for Hal while Hal returned to Oa to have his malfuntioning ring repaired, but unfortunately the battery was defective and exploded while Guy was charging his ring. Guy ended up in a coma, where he remained until he was awakened by rogue Guardians during the Crisis on infinite Earths. Guy's time in a coma left him somewhat unbalanced, and his revelation that he could have been GL filled him with rage towards Hal. This rage towards Hal culminated in a fight between the two of them, with the losers ring forfeited. Hal defeated Guy in hand to hand (sans ring) combat, and Guy surrendered his ring.
Guy still felt a need for the power of a ring, and therefore arranged for transportation to Oa, the final resting place of Sinnestro following his execution at the hands of a small group of GL's. Guy gained Sinnestro's ring, and used it for a short while before the whole Warrior alien power thing started, and since that is post GL history, I have no knowledge of those events.

This is true they were chosen as equals. And the defective power battery that put Guy in a coma was a trap set by Sinestro. I remember stories from the period and Guy was a real good guardian for Earth when Hal was away in space. I liked Guy better then then, than later.
Have you read on him in the JLI comics? ONE PUNCH!!!
(Sorry, couldn't resist. ;D)

the comic WARRIOR was good reading. the idea was a little hokey ...that guy was suddenly found to be the last person alive with an alien ancestor in the wood pile. but such are comics. i believe guy died in the worlds at war run.....but his legacy lives in the bar "warriors" in new york city (in the comics of course) where a lot of super hero's hang out.

no steel is alive. recently in the superman titles he was kidnapped by darkseid and the supersquad (supes and superallies) rescued him. steels...neice? (unsure on who it was) wore his revamped armor into battle.
Also, Guy came back. By tricking Superman or something . . . I missed the actual issue, so I can't get into details.
