Thanks for the compliment! By base maker, do you mean dial top? This has been asked for alot. I would be interested to see a template so that I can see how hard it would be to make.

Urlmaker, I love your site too.

Check me out at:

I've got the stats and dialtop templates in Illustrator 9.0 format, along with a ZIP file of the team icons. I can save them as JPEGs or something else if necessary.

There's not a whole lot to change on them, so it might even be easier than your stats maker. The figure name, points, collector #, and range are all variable text. There's a team icon if applicable, the movement symbol, and the multi-target lightning bolts (1-3) as far as graphics go, plus the color of the experience ring changes. The rest of the stat symbols are fixed.

I'd love to see what you come up with!

I forsee two problems with adding this to the dial maker. I have everything I need databased down to the team icon. So there is no problem in getting the pieces into the image (flash wise) The first problem I see is the name field which is curved. I don't believe I can make skewed text dynamic. If I wrap the dynamic name around the dial when it fills it in I think it will rotate back to a horizontal disposition. I may see if this is true this weekend.
The other is the same print problem that I have now. I can't make flash print at the right size. I have tried 20 or 30 different print methods and you still need a graphics program to print the dial. This bums me out real bad. (as a developer it has been my white whale) I can still do it and I may (if the first problem is solveable) but I probably won't do it if I can't get the text to wrap properly around the outside of the dial.

As long as you can manage to get the text to wrap around the dial top properly, I say go for it. Having a dial top maker would mean that I no longer have to strip the paint off of the dials I have. It's a royal pain. They don't all seem to have the same paint used on them. Some of the dial top stats/names/team symbols come off very easily with a touch of paint thinner. Others require up to five minutes of scrubbing to remove the unwanted bits.

Don't sweat the inability to shrink the stat dials. It's a minor annoyance at worst, and even then it's only for your first try at printing a dial. After that, you know what the proper settings are to get a good result, so it's easy.

Well, upon research I cannot wrap a dynamic text field for the name of the fig. I CAN however make a variable slot for every letter. It will take longer to do but should work pretty well. There may be inconsistant space between letters especially Upper Vs. Lower case. I am not sure if the is the perfect solution and may keep looking for alternatives. For now, don't throw out your photoshop or illustrator dial tops. :ermm:
