5th semi Annual Custom Clix Contest - Golden Puppet Master Classic V3

Hear ye, Hear ye!!! Let the 5th Custom Clix Contest (Tri-C) begin. Time once again for the Order of the Golden Puppet Master Contest to rear it’s bald head. There is a sub contest included in this one – a master’s challenge so to speak, detailed below entitled the Grand Master Pearl Kingpin Challenge. Both of these contests are meant to be competitions between mods, more so than competitions between people - please keep that in mind, to compare people, we'd all have to do the same mod and I don't think anyone is interested in that sort of competition anyway. This is for fun and to encourage modeling and modelers who hang out here in the Artisan's Guild, the prizes are for the most part worthless but fun to get and they make for interesting decorations and conversation pieces - play them in a game and freak people out LOL. "This is my Golden Puppet Master that I received for . . . . . "
(Entry deadline for the 5th contest is May 5th – 5/5 – midnight GMT.)
Participants in this go around will have to state in their entry whether or not they are in the GPM challenge or going for the big prize in the Kingpin challenge – participants can not be entered into both.

Please submit a picture or two of your mod below, (most people like to see a back and front for judging purposes).
Entry parameters:
1) One mod per person.
2) State whether you are entering your mod in the GPM (standard) or the PKC (master modelers) contest.
3) Dial is unimportant for both contests.
4) One modeler per mod, so no collaborations please.
5) Mods should have at least 10% alteration in original form and a completely new paint job - strict repaints are not eligible.
6) Half your mod must be from stock HC figures. It’s ok to use putty and MK figures so long as they don’t become over 50% of the mod.

7) Mods should be of characters associated with the superhero genre – either in comic print or through tv/movies. No Star Wars clix, Wrestlers, deities etc.
8) Deadline for entries – posted with link to picutures of your mod is – May 5th, 12 midnight, GMT – that basicly gives everyone two weeks and weekends. The 5th is a Monday, late that night, est, I’ll start the voting which should last about 3 days.
9) We'll collect pictures for 2 weeks. At the end of those two weeks, each applicant, or person who submitted, will cast a vote for best mod, you may not vote for your own sorry, and you can not vote if you do not have an entry in the contest. You will have to vote for rankings of 1-5, points will be awarded for each slot (5 pts for first, 4 for 2nd etc) and you will have to vote for the best mod in the PKC detailed below. Important: If you do not vote or your vote does not contain 5 placements, your entry will be removed from the contest. You will be given an id number after Pming your vote, (more instructions as voting grows near), all votes will be posted publicly but with the ID number not your name.

There will be 5 trophies for 1st through 5th place. Any ties will result in awarding the highest possible prize to both and bumping the next tier of prizes in exchange – for example, we might have two second place mods, but if we do there will be no third place awarded. The Best New modeler award is not being offered this go around – it’s hard to keep track of and confirm so I’ve opted to just go with 5 prize slots.
First prize - a rookie Puppet Master primed and painted in gold apple barrel paint
Second prize - a rookie Puppet Master primed and painted in silver apple barrel paint
3rd prize - a rookie Puppet Master primed and painted in copper paint (I don't have bronze)
4th and 5th place – clay colored Puppet Masters.

But in addition to these wonderful prizes, you will win the adoration of your friends and colleagues, or at least their scorn for you will be "The Golden Puppet Master of HCRealms" - at least until we have another contest LOL


As far as pictures go, that's up to you - the better the pictures or the more complete view you have - the more people will be likely to vote for your mod. Personaly, I'm going to go with a front and back shot. Please post links to pictures, I'm going to try to gather all the links together for a final post before voting.

***Sub contest – You know many of our best modelers have steered clear of the contests so far. This has been nice because it’s allowed a wide range of people to both participate and place in previous contests – I’ve always viewed it as sort of subconscious and collective pity. But I miss seeing their mods and would like to give the best and the boldest the opportunity to participate as well, so I’m adding a sub contest this time entitled –

The Grand Master Pearl Kingpin Challenge – if you’re an experienced modeler and you’re notorious for crafting superior mods, this contest is for you and it will get you in the system so you can vote like the other participants, which is half the fun I think.
Now there’s only one prize for what is intended to be a best of the best competition, so it’s not for the faint of heart. Anyone can enter, but entry into this contest removes you from the Golden Puppet Master Contest.
Entry parameters –
1. One mod per person, one person per mod
2. At least 10% physical alteration of a base figure.
3. Entry into the Grand Master Challenge eliminates participants from entry into Golden Puppet Master contest.
4. No restrictions other than the above
5. One prize, a mother of pearl painted rookie Kingpin, I might pop for an exp. Nothing screams Master like a Pearl Kingpin – or nothing screams pimp perhaps, but nevertheless, what a great prize!!!!!
6. PKC participants will vote in both contest and GPM contestants will vote for the PKC challenge winner; same voting restrictions apply in that not voting removes your mod from competition
7. Votes for PKC will simply be in the form of – pick your favorite one, winner is the mod that receives the most votes.

You said to limit putty to 50% of the figure. Well, almost the entirety of my figure is going to be Clix parts, but I'm modelling on a rather large energy effect that will probably end up being quite a bit more than 50% of the whole model. Is that okay?

I'll try to answer any questions that come up as quickly as possible, hopefully within 48 hours.

Hulk14 - yep, that would work. Those rules are just to prevent strict repaints of factory colors or things like blue/yellow Wolverine altered to brown Wolverine, but a different figure, painted as cap with a shield added is fine.

Captainspud - if 50% of the mod is putty or non-hc, then no, it wouldn't be eligable for the Golden Puppet Master contest. I'm going to stick to that cause I've already talked to someone else about a similar situation involving MK pieces, and I really want to keep that contest pretty tight. There are no such restrictions on the Masters Pearl Kingpin Challenge though, so you could enter it in that.

As further clarrification in general on the 10% alterations rule -in general, something has to be altered. Removing lines by filling or sanding counts as alteration as well, but basicly some alteration has to occur. Shield agent as Punisher would not work - shield agent as Punisher with new weapons, new head, or new legs would. In general though, as far as past contests voting has gone, voters generally prefer a good amount of alteration so keep that in mind when making your entry selection.

Nope, no theme. Sorry Zaurial. I enjoyed the villain theme as well, but even that envoked many questions about what constitutes a villain - understandable since many characters switch back and forth. It's hard to think of a concrete theme in the superperson realm that everyone will reach the same conclusion on when posted. I've thought about a dynamic duo theme, or something to do with teams, but I'll wait for that another day. For now, this one is open ended.

Hardcorehurley - yep, its one or the other, but not both. If your an experienced modeler and you think your mods are coming out really well OR you've got a mod that just doesn't fit the restrictions of the Puppet Master Contest (which are a bit tighter on putty and non-hc parts), go for the Pearl Kingpin Challenge. Maybe, if I do this again, I may let people enter both - but I want to see how this goes and I want to stick to the opening parameters I posted as much as possible.

Hey gang - getting to the latest questions, I know the opening statement is long and tedious but here's the thing with tv/movie characters from that post at the top . . ..

So yes, superheroes or supervillains, who have appeared in comics, tv or movies - I'll even take those that appear in video games like the Freedom Force (I've been dying to play that, but my computer doesn't have a 3D graphics board - oh well, maybe next year.) So basicly superpeople that appear in any multi media - but please, lets keep it superpeople or races associated with those stories and characters (ie Skrulls, Parademons, etc)

This applies to the Puppet Master contest, the The Grand Master Pearl Kingpin Challenge can be anyone as it is virtually open ended save for no strictly repainted figures.

No prob. I had all three versions of Magneto. Kept a veteran for myself. Cut up the other two. Took quite of bit of cutting and sanding, with a touch of glue in just the right spots. I really didn't think it was gonna work. I had a heck of time getting it to come together.

Nothing else, that's perfect. Some people do add pictures of their character as they appear in books/film or whatever, but that's all dependent upon whether or not you have a good picture you can post to the web - its certainly optional.

OK gang - general debriefing - deadline is midnight GMT on Monday the 5th - 5/5. If your in North America, think of it as Sunday night though unless you're going to be home during the day.

Again we have the general (semi classic) Puppet Master Contest and the Masters Pearl Kingpin Challenge - which is for master modelers or people who have mods that go outside of the restrictions for the Puppet Master Contest - and you can always use that as an excuse if your uncomfortable with proclaiming yourself the other LOL.

Anyway gang, I've done a couple of these and watched a couple, you can expect most entries to come in over the last weekend as people are still working or waiting to see what others enter (or maybe both). Good luck too all -

I'm entering Talia - she's not a great mod, but she's an old favorite. Please don't vote for this mod, I just really want to be in and vote because I've been in the other 4 from our contest Tri-C series. This is not an award winner, but she's nice enough that I'm not embarrassed to enter her. . . and, best of all, I already have pictures of her, LOL. I've got a few mods that I think are going to really turn out well, but not in time for this contest. I do most of my work during the summer or during snow days - (guess what I do :cheeky: ) the spring is absolutely crazy with after hours work - anyway, here she is - there's something about a girl in black leather . . . :cool:

Well scr.... the winners, they'll probably want to keep things as is LOL ;) . Seriously, if you have suggestions for the next one . . . which is always contingent on interests, you can post them here or PM me or RCTpool. We always toss about input and things have changed contest to to contest and we're always trying to do new things to liven things up. (Choanata, our third volunteer and compatriot, is still MIA - I have an email tracking on him that still comes up as unread going on 4 months now.)

I will say that from contest to contest you will see change, but we really are reluctant to change anything during a contest. That's not us being bullheaded, its just that when you post parameters, liked or not - people seem to expect them to remain the same to the end. We've watched a couple of other contest come apart when things got, well "wishy washy" about what was expected.

Anyway, have fun with it, and happy modeling. Again, if you have suggestions you can post them now, wait till the end or PM them to either RCTpool or myself. This times big experiment is the Masters Pearl Kingpin Challenge -

If anyone has any questions about the reasoning behind any of the contests parameters - ask away, I'm bored and would love to talk to you at length and endlessly about the reasoning behind them, ask RCTpool; I bore him with this topic endlessly - seriously, ask away . . .I'm all ears.

Here's a good example: One question that might be hanging - "why do I have to vote for all positions, why not just one if that's all I like" . . . well under the scoring system, you are only giving your first place choice a 1 pt advantage over the one you choose as second, a 2 pt advantage over the one you choose as third, and so on . . . if people only vote for say, one mod, then they give their vote a 5 pt advantage (for this contest) over all other mods. So basicly, if you wanted your first pick to win, the best thing to do would be to cast only a vote for first - everyone wouldn't do that of course, but some may or might, either by accident or by calculation, the resulting 5 pt jump on the entire rest of the field would be the result - thus the "everyone must vote for all places awarded" rule.

You see . . . I can talk for hours about this stuff - but yes, without input we don't know what we are doing right or wrong, so by all means chime in . . . .

I guess I'll need to submit this one in to The Grand Master Pearl Kingpin Challenge. NOT because I think my mod's worthy of the title, but because he definately doesn't belong in the main challenge. It's of the Maxx and although he has a Skrull Agent inside, the viewable surface is 100% putty... :)

Though I'm proud of him, he was my very first attempt at making a custom HeroClix fig. I'd do a lot different if I had to do him again. One big point is that I've bought all new Acrylics after the mess I had painting him (and the Invader Zim and Flaming Carrot - second and third figs) with enamels... yuck!

Sure, you can submit something older - my entries an older mod. I think traditionaly people just try to do new/unposted mods, but there's no rule against submitting an older one. I don't know why that is, I guess some people feel there's a certain amount of "shock and awe" to mod debut vs one that has been seen already, but who knows whose seen your older stuff, so no sense in rushing a job and risking messing it up just for the contest. Somethings just don't come together in time - (been there had to deal with that) you might think of saving it for another contest some day.

A related point to everyone on this issue though, please, no mods that have already been entered in other contests here at hcrealms.

OK, here's mine. I'm submitting my mod of Genis, the new Captain Marvel. I used the body of Constrictor and the head of Sandman, complete repaint, and stuck it on a flight base. It was between this one and Gwen Stacy, which used three different clix, but Genis fits the theme better. Hope you like him!

Thanks. l liked my Spider-woman since I haven't seen any of her done yet. I used the netting material that people use for buttrfly nets. I just super glued it in place and super glued the material after to make it plastic hard.

Yeah, Shadowhawk did eventually die. It was the big thing in early Image comics to give all their characters AIDS. So at the end of the first volume of the series, the character did actually die. Then they tried to do a second volume, some different person in the suit, and it wasn't as good.

Still, I thought that the character was really cool, loved the costume, and thought it would be fun to try to make him. That was my first ever attempt with putty, and mixing pieces. I'm quite happy with that one :) Thanks for looking :)

Well it has to be superhero/supervillain related - book, tv or movie for the GPM contest, however, the Pearl Kingpin Challenge is pretty much unrestricted except for it has to be some sort of mod and not just a repaint.

Great, if you can't get a digital camera - go for a scanner - up the pixelation setting a bit, scans are really not that bad, in some cases they show more detail than medium quality cameras.

I was stumped on who to try to make for this contest up untill Friday night when inspiration hit. I like to do mods that I don't think will get made and doing theme based teams is my latest kick. So I thought I'd go KISS since they recently joined the world of Super Folk with the McFarlane/Image comic series. Actually since we opened things up to include superheroes on TV, Kiss did a couple TV movies back in the 80's where they were a rock band by day and vigilantes by night (Anybody remember "Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park"?).

I worked in spurts from Friday night to Sunday night to complete him. I'm going to try to do the rest of the band over the next few weeks.

:( ouch, sorry Mr. Squawkins and holocaust, those are awesome mods, but the deadline passed at midnight GMT on the 5th. Both of yours came in on the 6th in GMT. Maybe I should have done it in EST, but if I had, I would have probably set the deadline Sunday at midnight.

Sorry for any confusion, this makes me sick, again two really nice mods, - but I have to stick with the deadline posted. Hopefully they'll be another contest at the beginning of the summer - please give that one a try.

Well first, thanks to everyone for participating. I think this is the largest amount of people we have had involved. This is the first time all the votes have come in early. Also, all votes were complete needing no corrections. Actually all the votes were in as of yesterday, but electrical storms kept me from posting. I still have to mail you all your ID numbers, then I'll post your votes with those numbers. Results have been tabulated and retabulated - winners should PM me there addresses - prizes will be mailed next Saturday. So without further ado - the winners are -

Little commentary - The Rhino, charged to the front (tying another mod for most mentionings, but really racking up the 1 and 2nd place pts- which carried him to the front of the pack) The race for 2nd to 4th was very close with only 6 pts separating those 3 places. Spiderwoman was actually mentioned a few more times than Bats 1 mil, but Bats had higher placements and earned more pts. Ultimate Hawkeye, was the most consistantly voted for mod after the top 4 and the results, of course, reflect that.

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all for participating and making everything run so smooth. I try to get the full results up tonight.

In hindsight, I wish I had offered more prize placements for the Pearl Kingpin Challenge, but I wasn't sure how that would be received or how many, if any, would enter. Maybe if we do that again, I'll change that.

Keep the comments and suggestions coming - I am taking note of them - like the one to post to this thread to announce a future contest.

You all did a wonderful job. When I saw the Gene Simmons mod my jaw dropped to the floor and it took me nearly an hour to reel it in.:laugh: I only wish I could sculpt half as well or paint half as well as most of you. I didn't enter anything into the contest so I couldn't vote but as far as the Golden Puppetmaster award goes I like Quasarswill's figure a lot. It is an excellent resculpt and repaint of a figure I had never seen before and I thought that was a rather fresh approach on Batman. Nice job!:cheeky:

Well next time, please do enter. Even if you don't think you'll win a particular contest, half the fun is participating and judging. Quasarswill's figure did really well, though out of the top 5. You're right it was a great figure and his entering it has made me want to find out more about that story line - so thanks for that. You can always rehash these things, why people voted or didn't vote for this or that - bad pictures usually kill a couple of mods. You never know. I really liked RCTpool's Shining Knight, but I had to kid him a little - I told him it looked too much like a stock MK figure - in actuality although it has MK parts like the horse and head I think, the figure itself was a Hobgoblin ( :laugh: a little too good for your own good there RCT) Although the KISS figure was awesome. Quasarswill had great pictures, but I'm inclined to think that the fact that there were two alternate Batman figures in the contest, probably took some attention away from his mod. Of course you can't know what others will enter nor can you change your work based on it, so that is sort of luck of the draw -

General note to all - I promised detailed results and confirmation numbers, but Mother's Day takes precedence - (atleast if I don't want to be miserable for a week it does), so I'm going to have to shoot for tomorrow on that - very busy day here, sorry about that.

Just getting in from the weekend to check mail - and just wanted shoot a note of thanks out to everyone. Not for your votes, but for entering. I've been making custom action figures for years - everything from 24-inch Japanese super robots to miniatures but have never had a forum to share my work or be inspired by the work of others. The group produced some fantastic stuff and I can't wait till the next contest, as we keep raising the bar for each other (I'm glad that Rhino wasn't in the Pearl Kingpin - It's better than my Gene Simmons IMO).

At any rate, since this is the second contest I've won, I'm officially retiring from competition (at least for a while). But because I love to participate in some way, I'd like to start offering my moods as 1st prize. I figure this way; we might get a few more people to enter these things. It would be cool if the 1st prize winners from each competition were responsible for modding the prizes for the next contest - but for now, I'd be happy to kick things off if Daredevil is in agreement.

Please don't dwell on the results too much if you didn't do well, all the mods were great and this was perhaps the most solid field of mods entered. As I said earlier, than can be many reasons for a mod not scoring well - bad pictures, obscurity of character, or even timing - I think the John Stewart mod would have done a lot better prior to the promo pictures of the John figure WK is about to put out.

All I can say is keep plugging away, we've done this 5 times now and people that hang around and keep plugging away seem to place sooner or later - at any rate, I hope you had a good time with this one and join in on the next round ;)
