It was me versus Devon, one on one, a 200 point game. The setting was the surprise. I made a BLANK map to which I added buildings with gridded interiors and removable gridded roofs (made from some old wooden boxes I'd forgotten I had). Three such buildings on the board, marked for where the doors and fire escapes were. Two on Devon's side, one on mine. Filled with props and one potential hostage each. The hostages were set to a speed of four. Hostages could be 'carried' like an object (but no faster than their speed) and when a villian is holding a hostage, a hero could not use a ranged attack on him (for fearing of hitting the hostage). Unfair to the heroes? You bet!!!
Devon, who is evil, played his Unique Catwoman, a Harley Quin, a Clayface and assorted crooks; I, who am good, played Exp. Batman and Nightwing, Vet. Robin, and assorted GCPD cops.
Catwoman ran into a building, grabbed a hostage, and ran into center field, taunting B&R. Meanwhile criminals and henchmen went up to the roofs of the closest building to shoot at the heroes. Harley sauntered up the alley and Clayface held back.
Batman and Nightwing went up to their roof where they made ranged attacks on Catwoman's witless rooftoop thugs while Outwitting her Leap/Climb and Incapacitate. Robin meanwhile hid in the hindering terrain with two cops flanking him. With their added 'police power' he was able to slam at the rooftop thugs and a couple on the ground while keeping Harley at bay. He dared not touch Catwoman because she had the hostage.
Catwoman, frustrated at being outwitted and ignored, abandoned the hostage to run up and make a rooftop run at Nightwing (who had already taken damage from the roof thugs). Robin runs to help the hostage off the board. Harley makes her play for the center board while Clayface emerges from the alley between the buildings....
Batman wallops Harley hard from above; she runs into the other building and grabs the other hostage and drags her out. Meanwhile Catwoman has proved too much for Nightwing whom she kayoes; and Robin, slowed down by the hostage he's trying to escort off the board, is suddenly pinned by a Clayface who moves MUCH faster than you would expect. Robin makes the VERY difficult decision of abandoning the hostage to Clayface and joining Batman on the roof, while Batman, enraged at Nightwing's defeated, wallops a weakened Catwoman for three clicks, knocking her back off the roof for two more. Night-night, Kitty Cat!
The cops and thugs, clearly out of their league, battle one another. One cop rushes to rescue the second hostage, whom Harley has just released beCAUSE.....
She and Clayface dash, with the FIRST hostage up to Batman's roof to confront him and Robin!!! Batman HAS to attack Clayface, whose poison has kicked in. With Clayface and Harley sharing attack values (as adjacent Batman Enemies), Batman is getting his butt kicked. B&R struggle valiantly but it seems hopeless.
UNTIL....
On the ground below, one Gotham cop has escorted the second hostage off the board. The other one had been shooting at a Thug, who had had cautiously back off from the edge of the roof out of side. Oddly cautiously, one might say.... The cop, shooting from behind a car, picks off another criminal, who Devon sadly puts to the edge of the board. "No," says Scip,"put him over there with the defunct Catwoman." Devon does....VERY reluctantly.
"Devon?" "Yes, Scip?"
"Um; how much are Catwoman and the criminal worth put together?"
"I don't want to tell you that."
"Tell me anyway." "98 points"
Robin laughed. Harley screamed and Clayface moaned. Batman....smiled. And the two remaining cops pushed themselves to shoot the final thug, winning the game.
Devon, whose chose his team poorly but played them BRILLIANTLY had managed to distract me into 'chasing the monkey'; I was so focused on the threat of Harley and Clayface , I forgot that with the expensive unique Catwoman down, a minor character or two would win me the game. ANd he would have had me, too, if ONE roll from Clayface had gone the other way.....
Our conclusion was that the scenario felt much more realistic and interesting than just a big slug fest. We want to do more like this in the future.
