“BLAST! It’s not enough energy!”

Dr. Doom was furious. He had seven of the world’s mightiest heroes locked away in his possession – Thor, Spider-Man, Professor Charles Xavier, Wolverine, Doctor Stephen Strange, Daredevil, and his hated archrival Reed Richards. With some slight assistance from a few of those who shared his hatreds – the Enchantress, Bullseye, the Hobgoblin, Nightmare, Sabretooth, and the enigmatic Magneto – the task of capturing the heroes did not prove too difficult. However, draining them of the strange energies that powered them was proving to be a more difficult task.

“Perhaps you don’t have it hooked up correctly. Did you forget to place Tab A into Slot B?,” Magneto inquired.

Doom raged inside, but his outward calm never wavered. There would be time to eliminate Magneto afterwards, but he still needed his aid. “My machine is perfect. There simply isn’t enough energy stored in the heroes for our needs. We need two more sources of great power. And I believe I know how to get them…”

* * * * *

“An interesting proposition. You would help me eliminate the Imperialist, and what you propose would bring me great power.” The Mandarin gazed out the window of Doom’s chamber. Few would dare leave their back turned to Dr. Doom, but the Mandarin knew that his two Ninja bodyguards would provide him with ample warning should any treachery occur, and he saw little reason for Doom to bother with an ambush in the first place.

“I agree. I have been seeking to get rid of my own beast of burden for a few years now, and what you offer – I think I like it,” the Leader added.

“Then it’s settled. I hope you don’t think me too forward, but I anticipated your responses and have already set events into motion which should bring our quarries to us. Wait… hold.” Doom tilted his head as he listened to the reports. “Hmm… yes, he’s either very bold or very stupid. Allow him to approach, but keep him covered at all times. Do not let him escape your sight.” He turned back to the Mandarin and the Leader. “Gentlemen, I apologize for the interruption. It seems we have a guest who wasn’t on the list. If you would accompany me, we will join the others to greet him and see what he has to say.”

Together, the three villains walked out the room and headed for the courtyard. Already, the rest of the company was waiting.

“I don’t like this, Doom! I don’t like it one bit!”called out Roderick Kingsley, aka the Hobgoblin. “Why are you letting him approach? Why haven’t you shot him down? And how did he find out about this?”

“Patience, Kingsley. Your cowardice is not appealing you to me. First you were afraid of Bullseye, now this… how long until you prove yourself a liability? And do you not trust yourself safe in my care?” It was not so much a question as a threat.

“No, I do! I do!” The fear in Hobgoblin’s voice revealed his answer as a lie, and he squirmed as he tried to think. “I just don’t see why we need to talk to him! I know this guy – he cannot be trusted!”

“Perhaps, but I’m not entirely convinced on you, either. We shall see what our friend here has to say, and I shall make my decision accordingly.”

They watched the horizon. The first thing they saw was a smoke trail, streaking across the sky. Then they saw him – clad in green, the Green Goblin flew an unorthodox pattern straight towards the castle. Within minutes, he was circling the courtyard.

“Doom! This has nothing to do with you. It just has everything to do with him.” Goblin pointed a finger at Hobgoblin, and the other tensed as he expected a finger-blast to fire.

“He is currently under my employ, and thus under my protection. I am curious how you traced him here.”

“I’m a madman, not an idiot. I heard about his breakout, and how no one could figure out who did it. I also heard whispers of how you were looking for Bullseye personally. And then all these other players started disappearing off the radar, and pieced it together.”

“Very clever. And are you at all interested in why I’ve been gathering these forced?”

“Not particularly. I just want him.” The Goblin continued to circle, never taking his eyes away from Hobgoblin.

“So you would have no interest in the fact that I currently have Spider-Man, secure and helpless in my dungeon.”

The words had a jolting effect on the Goblin, and he pulled his glider to a hover and turned to Doom. Then he stopped and burst into a bout of hysterical laughter.

“Oh, Victor… you DO know the magic words! Yes, I’d be very interested to know how the little spider is doing! But can I see him for myself? I’ll be good… I promise.”

“Perhaps later. There is a situation that will need attention, and I would be appreciative of your aid. You will be rewarded, I assure you.”

“Then I’m in.” The Goblin turned back to Hobgoblin. “And I’ll take care of you later, Roddy,” he said menacingly.

Doom nodded. “Well, with that settl—“ Doom was cut off as a massive explosion rocked the castle. “Impossible! How could they have gotten here so soon, and without my knowing? Everyone, with me – we mustn’t let them escape!”

This will be the start of the 2nd Arch-Enemies battle between Keleko and myself. For those who missed round one: a team of heroes were lured to Castle Doom by Dr. Doom, as part of a plot to capture them and use the energies that grant them their abilities as a power source. The heroes lost and were summarily captured by the forces of evil. Which brings us to right now.

My team can be found here:

...I just realized I titled the thread “Keleko vs. Kendrick.” It’s actually going to be “Keleko vs. Phantom.”

THIS is why you don’t draft posts while watching Brian “Spanky” Kendrick wrestle on WWE Smackdown.

Iron Man inspected the new entrance he just created in the side of Doom's castle. "Well, Doom knows we're here now. No need for stealth anymore." On the display inside his helmet he checked the locator beacon that brought him here in the first place. It wasn't often his teammate Thor was in trouble, and when he was, he usually needed big guns to help get him out of it. Iron Man felt he certainly qualified, but he also somehow managed to bring along an even bigger gun, and one of the few individuals stronger than even the Mighty Thor. He glanced back at the Hulk.

Hulk was dealing with a swarm of Doombots that had swooped down at the sound of the explosion and were circling and blasting away at him. "Hulk tired of hiding!" he roared as he threw a some rubble the size of a car, smashing two bots with the massive stone.

Iron Man turned his attention to the approaching Doombots. "I believe I can deal with the robots. I've reprogrammed my armor to produce an EMP that should short out the remaining robots."

"Talk confusing Hulk! Just smash!"

"Commencing 'smashing'." And at that moment an invisible wave of energy eminated from Iron Man's armor. However, there was quite a visible effect on the robots as all of their rockets stopped at once, and the robots crashed to the ground in crumpled heaps. "Now let's go rescue the others. They should be straight that way," and he points into the hole blasted into the castle. "Let me bring up a map of the castle I got from the Fantastic Four computer to find the shortest way to the beacon..."

Iron Man was cut off as the Hulk began smashing walls on his own, creating his own shorter route. "Hulk not need map. Hulk go where shiny armored man points."

With Hulk leading the way they quickly found the chamber with the captured heroes. Before Iron Man could even start analyzing the complex machinery that contained the captives, Hulk was ripping the restraints off Dr. Strange and Thor. Iron Man and Hulk quickly freed the rest of the captives.

Mr. Fantastic then filled in the background. "It seems Dr. Doom, Enchantress and Magneto have built a machine to drain power from us and pass it on to them, as well as a few others they brought in to help capture us. The machine was able to drain enough of our abilities that we were unable to stop them, and we were captured. I anticipated a possible defeat and reprogrammed Thor's Avengers communicator to emit a delayed distress call in case we needed it."

Meanwhile, Hulk and Wolverine are eyeing each other warily. Hulk seems to be enjoying the moment. "Hulk find it funny that Wolverine need Hulk for rescue!"

Wolverine looks like he's about to get into a tangle with the Hulk when Professor X stops him. "Logan, this is not the time. Hulk is our ally. If you make him angry against us then we'll be in more trouble than we are now."

Wolverine stays silent, but turns and walks away from the Hulk.

Mr. Fantasic continued, "Now, we must leave quickly. Doom certainly knows you're here, and that we're free."

"I believe that is my department," says Dr. Strange. he attempts to teleport them away, but his spell does not work. "It seems Doom has wards protecting this area. He must have set them up while we were captured. I'm afraid I won't be able to get us away."

Iron Man speaks up. "There's a construction site not far from here where I parked the quinjet. Follow me."

Iron Man and Thor lead the way out with Dr. Strange bringing up the rear pulling the rest of the grounded heroes in a telekinesis spell. As they made their way to the transport, Spider-Man speaks up. "Um, Doc? I could use a little help... It seems my black suit got a bit... shredded... during the fight. Can you make me decent again? My red and blue threads are more comfortable, too."

"My pleasure," replied the mystical master. Weaving another small spell, Spider-Man's damaged costume shimmers and is replaced with his traditional red and blue costume.

"Aaaahhh... much better. Always dress appropriately for the occaision, I always say!"

Professor X, concentrating while being carried, creates a new mind link. "I've detected Dr. Doom and our foes converging on the position of the parked quinjet. It looks like we're going to have to fight our way out. He's gotten some more help, too, it appears."

Iron Man adjusts his visual equipment. "It appears they've blocked our way to the quinjet. Let's take cover behind that pile of dirt and plan our attack."

The 9 heroes set down behind a large pile of dirt in the construction site.

"Hulk not need cover!" Hulk yells, and he leaps on top of the pile.

Seeing the heroes duck under cover, Magneto leapt into action. “They’re trying to hide like rats. Here’s what we’ll do—“

“I will not listen to you, impudent dolt.” The voice of the Mandarin called out. “I heard how you fared in the previous battle. Of your entire company, you were the only one to suffer any truly grievous wounds. And now you would presume to command me?” Magneto seethed at the insults, but Mandarin paid him no mind and turned to the Green Goblin. “Get me to the top of that construct.”

The Green Goblin effortlessly carried the Mandarin to the top of a nearby trailer. From his vantage point, the Mandarin surveyed the battlefield. “DOCTOR! I would speak with you up here.”

“Come along, Magnus. Let us see what he has in mind…” Doom and Magneto both joined the Mandarin on top of the trailer.

“You can see a small hole in the side of the trailer they hide behind. Get me into position, and I can control one of them with my Mento-Intensifier ring and have them do my bidding.”

“A bold plan. Very well. Magnus, assist him so that he may devote his concentration to gaining control of our enemies.”

Magneto assisted with the request, using his powers to levitate the Mandarin behind a patch of machinery. He could see Dr. Strange through the gap in the machinery. He could feel the eyes of his temporary allies on him, and would teach them how he was not one to be trifled with. Raising his hand, he concentrated and a beam of energy leapt towards the hero. However, before he could establish control, a plate under his foot shifted, causing his concentration to break as he regained his balance. Mandarin cursed as he realized his covert operation was blown.

A dolt, am I?, thought Magneto, satisfied that Mandarin would soon pay a heavy price for his hubris thanks to his machinations.

Elsewhere, Nightmare gestured to one of the ninja. “Come with me,” he hissed, and his form shimmered slightly as he phased through to the other side of the fence. The ninja followed, leaping over the fence to take a position next to Nightmare. Sabretooth saw the movement and followed.

Professor X uses his mind link to lay out the attack plan. "Mandarin has exposed himself. I sense his mental power is nearly as great as my own. We need to eliminate him as a threat while we can."

Iron Man speaks up. "I have fought him many times. Thor, if I am not mistaken, Mjolnir is immune to magic used against it. It may be the first strike weapon we need to weaken him."

Thor smiles. "Fear not! My hammer shall fly true! TO BATTLE!"

Professor X thinks quickly, "Bring my chair with you. If I can see him, I may be able to distract him to help you."

Thor lauches himself and Professor X over the pile of dirt to land behind a smaller pile next to a drainage pond. "Magician! See if your magic can stand up to Mjolnir!" He flings his mighty hammer, connecting a solid blow on Mandarin and knocking him into the fencing around the construction site.

Professor X is well pleased with Thor's success. "Now we must finish him quickly, while his defenses are down. Dr. Strange, if you could teleport Iron Man next to me, then he can move me to where I can see Dr. Doom. He is our most dangerous foe, and maybe I can connect with his mind to use his armor against us this time."

Dr. Strange agrees. "Your plan is risky, but it may work." He teleports himself and Iron Man near Thor and Professor X.

Iron Man carries the Professor over the fencing around the parking lot and aims his repulsors at the shaken Mandarin. "This should finish him off," he comments, as a powerful beam shoots out, striking the fallen Mandarin square in the chest and knocking him out cold.

Meanwhile, Professor X concentrates on Dr. Doom up on the roof, but he cannot break Doom's will. "His mind is very strong indeed. I am still unable to gain control of it."

Mr. Fantastic moves up next to Thor and Dr. Strange. "I am not surprised at the difficulty you are having, Professor. It may take a concerted effort to defeat him."

Hulk sees movement behind a truck and a pile of logs. "Hulk see someone to smash!" He bounds off the dirt pile, over a dump truck and ends up behind a forklift.

-----------
-Professor X rolls a 6 for leadership
-Thor uses running shot to move to F15, carrying Professor X to G15. Thor rolls double 4's to hit Mandarin for 4 + 1 from knockback.
-Dr. Strange flies to F17 and drops Iron Man at G16.
-Iron Man uses running shot to move to M17 and drops Professor X at N18. Iron Man needs a 3 and rolls an 8, causing 3 clicks and KOing Mandarin.
-Professor X attempts to mind control Dr. Doom and rolls a 6 when he needed a 7.
-Mr. Fantastic moves to E16
-Hulk moves to H11

Dice are being a bit friendlier to the good guys at the start of this game. The knockback damage from Thor made sealing Mandarin's fate very easy with Iron Man for the double archenemy points.

Thor - F15@
Dr. Strange - F17@
Mr. Fantastic - E16@

“Well, now that that business has been settled, let’s move on to our next order of business,” said Magneto.

“You’ll forgive us if we don’t believe you have our best interests at heart, Magnus.” The voice of Doom was cold under his mask, and it was clear that he knew exactly what Magneto had done to the fallen Mandarin. “Besides, I have a better idea. Hobgoblin! Bullseye! The telepath is a nuisance! Please take care of him! And remember – we need him ALIVE.”

“We don’t need to be told twice!” Both men realized that they were under scrutiny, and this knowledge fueled their next actions. Hobgoblin grabbed Bullseye and pushed his goblin glider to its limits, streaking across the battlefield.

“Drop us there, Hobby.” Bullseye pointed to an emptied out automobile. “I think I see my shot.”

Hobgoblin set glider down and the two got to work. Bullseye pulled an old hubcap off the car’s tire and threw it like a discus for the Professor’s exposed head. The Professor’s mind warned him of the danger and he tried to move his chair to dodge, but at the last moment the hubcap’s flight sliced straight for where the telepath had tried to evade to. It struck him right in the side of the skull with a sharp clang, and the Professor was clearly dazed by the attack, though he remained conscious.

“I can’t wait until we don’t need him alive anymore –- that should be fun!” said Bullseye, with a smug smile.

“These fools will need my intellect if they hope to have any chance of dealing with the power of my old foe,” the Leader said to no one in particular. He moved to join Sabretooth and Nightmare. Behind him, the Mandarin’s other ninja moved silently to guard the rear.

Let’s leave that little boys club alone for now. I think the big boys might be a bit more interesting to watch, anyway, thought the Enchantress, as she slunk around the corner of the fence to watch the battle.

* * * * *

Enchantress and Leader perplex Bullseye's damage to 3
Hobgoblin moves to Q24, drops Bullseye in Q23
Doom and Green Goblin perplex Bullseye's damage to 5
Bullseye shoots at the Prof. Needs a 5 to hit. He rolls 3+6, and the Prof takes 5 clicks.
Leader moves to S12.
Enchantress moves to V18.
BCF Ninja moves to W12.
All other clear.

Final positions:

You have the wrong versions of Spider-Man and Daredevil in my team. I'm using the ones from the Xplosion release for the novelty of playing those versions. That also puts the point totals at 1078 for the villains and 1080 for the heroes.

Not to interupt or anything... But how does bullseye give 5 clicks of damage? Perplex cannot be used with RCE, so if they perplexed his damage to 3... it just does 3.

You cannot perplex any combat value on bullseye if you want to keep ranged combat expert.

Keleko
05/12/2003, 12:38
I made the same comment in email because I missed the same line you did. Enchantress and Leader perplexed Bullseye first, then Doom and Green Goblin after he was moved. So, 4 perplexers made his damage 5. It's kind of sick when you have enough perplexers that you can negate RCE and still come out ahead.

Also, I just realized that I moved Thor one square too far. My next post will correct his placement, and I'll have to adjust Doctor Strange and Mr. Fantastic. Their placement depended on Thor's, and I couldn't move him as far as I thought. It will not affect the attack on Mandarin, though, since Thor would still be in range. It will also not affect Iron Man and Professor X's final placement.

Also, the placement in the post of Magneto, Doom and Green Goblin are different from what I got in the email of his move, so we're going with what he used in email and is currently displayed in the maps.

Apparently we both suck at this game. :)

Well, it was SUPPOSED to be four Perplex characters and one Outwit character. Mandarin actually played a large part in my plans to take down Hulk, but I honestly didn’t think he’d get taken down so early. Especially since he had a 75% chance to hit, and Thor only had a 42% chance to hit him in return. I’m definitely not looking forward to fighting the Hulk anymore.

I also updated the Professor – in my initial draft I had put in the Vet version instead of the Unique. I kinda forgot that he actually HAD a unique, since I so seldom see him in play.

And as for the coming out ahead after using Perplex – it still takes three perplexers to have a positive effect and make it worth it to lose RCE. I could get away with it in that first attack, because the shot was there and I didn’t have any other attacks open.

Here's the map after Phantom's turn and my readjustment of Thor, Dr. Strange and Mr. Fantastic to correct for Thor's shorter movement.

Thor is now at E14, Mr. Fantastic is at E15 and Dr. Strange is at F15. Professor X was dropped at F14 and Iron Man was dropped at G15 before moving to their current locations.

Magneto is at O16 as mentioned in the move with Dr. Doom (Doom moves to P16 (Brotherhood free move), drops Magneto in O16.)

Maybe I'll be able to do my next move without screwing anything up.

Phantom

But the real question is: Who’s on first?

My original notes in Excel basically had everyone on the rooftop in row 16 pushed one square to the right, so Magneto still would have had LOS – it just would have been one square over to the right. I think I’m fine leaving it this way, though, since changing it would then require Iron Man and Professor X to need to change their locations to get LOS to Doom, which may require Bullseye and Hobgoblin to rethink their positions, and which may change depending on the sun’s relation to the moon.

I’m just hoping I don’t get killed too badly now that Strange is able to taxi Thor for his next shot.

Keleko

I had to move Dr. Strange next to Thor to do what I originally intended to do with Thor alone. Since Thor couldn't move that far by himself I have to give him some help now.

Professor X's hands go to the large bump growing on his shiny top as he suppresses a yelp of pain.

Dr. Strange is particularly concerned. "Are you all right, Professor?" he asks as he teleports himself and Thor near the striken mental giant.

"I will be all right, Doctor," he replies, looking just the opposite.

Wolverine speaks up. "Chuck is tough. He'll be fine. He's been through much worse. However, I think its time for some payback." He moves behind another forklift not far from the Hulk.

Professor X collects himself and takes control of the battle again. "Thor, Magneto is one of our greatest threats, next to Dr. Doom. We must bring him down..."

"Say no more, brave warrior! Mighty Mjolnir shall fly yet again!" He flings his hammer at Magneto who tries to deflect it with his magnetic control, but at the last moment, Dr. Strange weaves a spell to reverse Magneto's polarization of his attempted shield, which draws the hammer into him even harder than Thor threw it. Magneto is rocked hard as it is his turn to feel the thunder god's power.

Seeing an opportunity to confront Dr. Doom, Mr. Fantastic moves next to Iron Man. "I'll grab Doom and Green Goblin while you finish off Magneto."

"Excellent plan." Iron Man's boot jets fire as he launches himself to the roof with Mr. Fantastic using Iron Man's momentum to pull himself next to Dr. Doom and Green Goblin. Iron Man again fires his repulsors, this time knocking the master of magnetism into dreamland.

Mr. Fantastic wraps his tough, elastic arms around Dr. Doom and Green Goblin. "Well, Victor, how does it feel to have your plans thwarted yet again?"

Hulk felt Professor X's pain through the mind link. Of course, it only makes Hulk madder. "Hulk's friend hurt! Now Hulk know who to smash!" He bounds over into the retaining pond and lands next to Dr. Strange.

Daredevil flinches at that. "Bullseye against the Hulk?" he comments to Spider-Man. "He's gonna be lucky if the Hulk doesn't make him a bloody, smeared target on the parking lot."

"Yeah, he's gonna need his toothpicks to pry his teeth out of the pavement when Hulk gets through with him," replies Spider-Man.

----
-Dr. Strange pushes and moves to L17, dropping Thor at M18
-Thor pushes and attacks Magneto, rolling an 8 and dealing 5 clicks to Magneto (4 + 1 enhancement from Dr. Strange)
-Mr. Fantastic pushes and moves to M16
-Iron Man pushes and moves to P14, dropping Mr. Fantastic at Q15. Iron Man's rolls a 5 against Magneto with running shot to KO him.
-Hulk pushes to move to L16
-Wolverine moves to H8
-Professor X clears

I was *really* tempted to not use enhancement with Thor and leave the final click to Professor X for the archenemy points. I decided against it, though, so I could start moving some of the rest of my team out. Taking out Magneto was crucial because of his high damage and all the perplex flying around. I also needed him out of the way so I could put Reed next to Doom and Green Goblin to tie them down. Magneto would have been able to break them free with TK, so that was another reason he had to go. I hated pushing all my big guns so early, but I figured I'm probably going to get hit soon and lose running shot, so I'd best use it.

Final Positions (and I hope I got them all right this time...)
Thor - M18@@ (1 click)

The assembled villains mobilized. Enchantress moved at a quickened pace that left her a tad breathless. Leader dashed up the stairs to see what Doom had in mind. Hobgoblin grabbed Bullseye, and streaked up to the rooftop.

Bullseye reacted instinctively, grabbing a chunk of masonry and hurling it with the pinpoint accuracy which he is known for. The rock cut his hand as he picked it up, but nevertheless flew unerringly to strike the leader of the Fantastic Four in the back of the head. Mr. Fantastic turned towards him to raise an eyebrow. “Did you honestly call that an attack?”

Bullseye’s eyes lit up as he smiled. “No,” he said. “I honestly call that a distraction.”

Reed suddenly felt Doom’s armor growing hot in his arms. He turned to see Doom facing him with arms outstretched. Doom spoke, his voice barely a whisper, and the air seemed to freeze around him.

“You. Do. Not. Touch. Doom.”

Mr. Fantastic screamed as energy leapt from Doom’s armored gauntlets, catching him with a powerful double-barreled energy blast. The sheer force of the blast sent him flailing over the edge of the rooftop, and his smoking elastic form landed lifelessly on the ground below.

“Now that’s the kinda man I like to work for,” growled Sabretooth, as he moved past the twitching body of Mr. Fantastic to guard the stairs.

Well, the answer to your first question in your signature is "Yes". I expected Mr. Fantastic to take some punishment, but I wasn't quite expecting that much punishment. I figured I'd be feeling the pain at some point, though. I knew Doom was dangerous which is why I tried to get him with the Mind Control early. Unfortunately I missed, and now I have to pay for it.

The Leader couldn't see Dr. Doom from Q13 because Mr. Fantastic blocked his view. However, it doesn't make any difference because the amount of damage done still KOs Reed. And, he can definitely see him now. Also, your final position for the Leader is incorrect at S12 since that's where he started. I just realized I had him at R12 in my maps before this move, so I'll correct them.

I was always under the impression that as long as the line does not pass through any barrier squares or blocking, it's considered clear, and the centerpoint of Leader's LOS to Doom passed right through the point between Mr. Fantastic and Iron Man. But as you say, it really doesn't matter either way. Kinda wish I hadn't wasted the pushes on Hobgoblin and Bullseye, though! If I'd known Doom was going to do that much damage...

And can I change my final location for Sabretooth? The map you have shows a final position of M-12 anyway, instead of L-14. But for my part I also misread the map, and wanted to put him in N-13. It doesn't have too much effect on him, but he's supposed to be guarding the base of the stairs for now.

Greetings,

I'm just happy to see the heroes making stuff happen this time around. Verily, Thor should never be taken lightly! The next few turns should get pretty messy, and it can still go either way. The heroes have more big guns standing. The villains are in better position and have enough perplex to choke a horse (but do they have enough to choke a Hulk?) Also, dealing with Doom will just be painful without a way to outwit mastermind (and poor Spiderman is still so far away)

Oh well, recommence rumble.

Regards,
Thor.

This is definitely turning out to be a close battle. We’ve each only missed one roll so far (and both of them have been the make-or-break opening gambits). I think Mandarin and Magneto are bigger losses than Mr. Fantastic and Xavier, though. And Hulk is still getting warmed up...

My one chance for survival is going to hinge on making the most of my Perplex before it’s gone.

Thanosied
05/14/2003, 20:29
Battle starter out weak for the villians but with that much Perplex you can come back fast. The Heroes have a slight advantage and I agree with all of the pushing they had to do (Magneto and Mandarin gotta go). Well good luck to both but Im voting heroes bigtime!! Dr.Doom doesn't really have a good source to dump his damage off to besides Sabertooth and all the scrubs. Maybe when Rhino comes out he can be a team member. :)

Phantom

Rhino would need an arch-enemy to be a team member.

And just a note: if Keleko puts up his turn tonight, I probably won't be able to get mine up until sometime tomorrow. I'm pretty much heading out right now to wait 5 hours in line for good seats to the local Matrix premiere. :)

Wolverine sees Sabretooth move up to the stairs. He decides to try to goad him into breaking ranks. "So, fuzz face, how does it feel to be treated like a pet? Doom feeding you the right brand of kibbles? You always were no better than a housecat."

“You know what, runt? I’ll let you stew a little while,” Sabretooth snarled. “I’ve got bigger fish to fry.” With that, he dashed up the stairs and flew at the exposed back of Iron Man. He tried to rake the Armored Avenger with his claws, but they didn’t even make a scratch.”

“Teflon coating, furball,” Iron Man said.

Elsewhere on the rooftop, the Green Goblin reached into his bag of pumpkin bombs. “Teflon, eh? Great – how about a barbeque?” He laughed maniacally and pressed a button on the bomb – a special high-powered charge.

The bomb struck Iron Man full in the chest, and his HUD flashed warnings. Calmly, he shut down several damaged and overloaded systems and reconfigured his combat displays to match his available power.

“Excellent work, Goblin. Your initiative pleases me. Now come with me – we have further work to do!” Doom fired his boot-jets and flew off the rooftop with the Goblin in tow. He settled on the ground, and was somewhat surprised to find that Nightmare was already waiting.

“I thought you could use my help,” the enigmatic creature said.

“Doom requires aid from no one. However, I shall accept it regardless.” Nightmare reached out and placed each hand on Doom’s shoulders. Doom could feel the power spiking in his suit. Turning towards the nearby cluster of heroes, he fired an energy cluster munition. Thor leapt in front to try to take the brunt of the blast, but it was still too much. The explosion rocked the heroes, and the concussive force proved to be too much for Professor X’s wounded body to handle.

“Explosion make Hulk angry!” growled the Hulk, and he seemed to grow even bigger in the aftermath.

Unseen, one of the Mandarin’s ninjas moved into a more useful striking position.

He attacks Dr. Strange and Professor X with Enhanced Energy Explosion. He rolls 3+6=9, which is plenty to hit both of them. Doc Strange, Thor, and Professor X each take 2 clicks of damage, while the Hulk takes one.
Ranged Ninja moves to P10.

That may have given me a bit more of a shot. I was hoping to do just one more click of damage to Iron Man this turn, but as it is I’ve got him where I really need him for now. Pushing Doom was a gamble, but it got Thor out of Running Shot and took his potential damage from 5 to 3, KO’ed Xavier before he tried any funny business with that last click of Mind Control, and Hulk is now one click closer to death (this is me trying to see the glass half full, as opposed to the half-empty view of Hulk as now being Invulnerable and more powerful).

Iron Man calls out for help from his teammates. "My armor's targeting systems have been significantly damaged. I'm afraid I'm quite exposed up here and need asistance."

Thor rallies to the call. "We shall endeavor to assist you, old friend!"

Dr. Strange adds his assistance as well. "Allow me to get us to the rooftop," as he casts a spell to teleport Thor and himself to the rooftop next to Iron Man.

"You, sir, are the ugliest foe I have faced in a long time. Let's see if my hammer can improve upon your appearance." Thor swings his hammer at the surprised Leader and lands a solid blow.

Iron Man attempts to follow up Thor with a punch of his own, but his damaged systems sends his swing wide. "Blast! There's a short in my rerouted targeting system."

Wolverine, seeing an opening with the distracted Sabretooth, makes his move. "Let me stew, eh? Well, bub, you're gonna be the main ingredient." He runs up the steps and pops his claws, grinning in anticipation of the fight to come.

Hulk sees his target go up on the building, too, and follows. "Little man not get away from Hulk! Hulk use dumpster on him!" Hulk bounds over to a dumpster, picks it up, and leaps up next to Hobgoblin and Bullseye, holding the dumpster high over his head.

Daredevil actually looks worried for his longtime foe. "Oh man, Hulk's gonna kill Bullseye with that thing."

Nightmare watched the activities on the rooftop with a wicked gleam in his eye.

“I believe the moment is yours, Nightmare,” said Doom.

“I agree. I’ve been waiting to see what you can do, milord,” offered the Enchantress.

“I think it’s about time I take a more direct hand in these. An opportunity has presented itself. Goblin!” Nightmare turned to the Green Goblin. “Bring me up there.”

The Green Goblin gulped back his fear of the strange creature beside him and took his hand. He was lighter than he looked. Together, they flew up alongside the melee. Nightmare drew on the strength of the fears around him and moved silently behind Dr. Strange.

“I’ll see you in your dreams, Stephen,” Nightmare hissed, before raking Strange’s back with his hand. The attack didn’t cause any physical damage, but the Sorcerer Supreme felt the power of the attack in his soul. He was caught unprepared for the sneak attack, and screamed for an instant before falling into a troubled slumber. Nightmare felt great pleasure at the energy he absorbed, even as he was weakened by the effort.

“I am not afraid. I am not afraid. I am not afraid.” Hobgoblin repeated the words as a mantra, pulling a gas bomb out of his pouch. Steeling himself, he looked up at the goliath in front of him. “Okay, you emerald imbecile. Eat this!” He threw the bomb.

And the Hulk caught it. And then the Hulk ate it.

“Hmm… Hulk like spicy pumpkin! Orange Man have more spicy pumpkins? Orange Man will give them to Hulk!” Hulk stared menacingly at the Hobgoblin.

“Forget this – I’m getting clear!” Bullseye executed a quick back flip to put a bit more distance between himself and the Hulk.

“You look like an appropriate patsy for dealing with my old foe.” Leader turned to Thor. “And surely you won’t remain in league with that giant troll next to you.” The Leader’s powerful mind enslaved the Asgardian to his will.

“Aye… verily this creature must be in league with Doom.” Thor turned slowly to the distracted Hulk and raised his hammer. “The Odinson shall smite thee, troll! For Asgard! For… nay.” Thor’s mind began to shake off the Leader’s control. “I say thee NAY!” Thor and the Leader screamed in unison as the psychic link was torn apart.

“I’ve been waiting a long time for this face off, runt.” Sabretooth faced Wolverine with a toothy grin. “This one’s going to the death!”

Hulk finally sees his longtime foe as he tried to make Thor hit him. Forgetting about Hobgoblin and Bullseye he screams, "LEADER! YOU DO NOT HURT HULK'S FRIENDS! NOW HULK WILL SMASH YOU! OUT OF HULK'S WAY, FURRY MAN!" Hulk barely takes notice of Sabretooth as he slams him from behind with the dumpster he was holding, destroying it and sending Sabretooth reeling.

Iron Man, seeing his chance, and having successfully repaired the short in his armor, swings his own punch at the battered Sabretooth. "Nite-nite, kitty," and Sabretooth drops unconscious at Wolverine's feet.

Wolverine is not too happy about having his target taken from him. "Sabretooth was MINE! AAARRRGH!" He turns his fury on the hapless Leader, who was still reeling from Thor breaking free of the mind control. The Leader never saw the claws coming as Wolverine unloaded his rage and left The Leader unconscious and barely alive with deep cuts on his body. Wolverine glares at the Hulk in satisfaction. "You take my target; I'll take yours. Now we're even."

Spider-Man sees an opening to go after his longtime enemy, Green Goblin. Bounding to the crowded rooftop he grabs a pallet of construction material. "This might come in handy. Hey, Gobbie, have you and Hobgoblin decided which of you is the ugliest yet?"

Daredevil sees Doom about to act again and thinks to himself, "Doom is way outta my league, but I gotta try to distract him. I just hope I survive the attempt." He flips over next to Doom. "Looks like you're having a devil of a time keeping your team together, Doom."

Spider-Man complains, "Hey, I'm the jokster here, Daredevil! It's in my contract!"

A fully ready Sabretooth was too dangerous next to Iron Man. I saw that I could do 3 attacks and try to KO both Sabretooth and The Leader needing nothing worse than a 5 to hit. Since I missed The Leader with Iron Man last turn needing a 6 I decided to go for the easier KO on the wounded Sabretooth with Iron Man. I had to give up the double points on Sabretooth, but I'm glad I did it that way because I would have missed The Leader again with Iron Man's attack roll. Wolverine only needed a 3 on BCF to finish off The Leader, and he wasn't much of a threat now, so I decided to chance it there.

Even as he stared down the Hulk, Wolverine’s keen senses gave him warning. Without breaking eye contact, he effortlessly ducked a poisoned shuriken blade from one of the Hand ninjas. The other ninja joined his comrade and prepared for battle.

“Bah! Clearly, a more direct hand is needed to assist those fools.” Doom fired up his boot thrusters and began to soar to the roof. His progress was impeded by a tugging at his ankle. Looking down, he saw Daredevil’s grappling club tied securely to his leg, as the Man Without Fear held it tight and used a protruding pipe for leverage.

“Sorry, Doom, but I don’t think you understood my intent. I’m not going to let you go up there yet. You have to dance with me first,” said the acrobat.

Doom regarded Daredevil as if seeing him for the first time. “You honestly think what you’re doing is brave, don’t you? That just makes you all the more stupid. Very well – I will grant you a firsthand audience with me. Make your peace.”

“Oooh, Victor!” the Enchantress purred as she walked seductively behind him. “I love it when you get all macho.”

Yep, you’ve been waiting this long for THIS. I realized only AFTER we’ve rolled the next three turns that, had I moved the BCF Ninja BEFORE making my attack roll with the ranged ninja, I would have had Hydra ability to boost my AV and thus hit Wolverine. Too late now, though, since Keleko and I have actually each rolled up our next turns and changing anything would have thrown it off. As it is, chalk up another “Miss by 1” to my tally and a moral lesson to the rest of you. It's the little misses like that which are likely to cost me this game, at this rate. That knockback-but-failed-breakaway from Doom was worse, though -- it's like the dice server is specifically taunting me!

“Goblin! My presence is needed on the field of battle above!” Doom tried to get his lackey to cooperate with him, but the Goblin was too groggy after the monstrous hit he took before to move.

Daredevil smiled. “Sorry, Victor, but I told you. We’re not done here until we’re done.”

Wolverine continued to dodge the barrage of shuriken being directed towards him, even as another battle went underway on the roof.

“Bullseye!” Hobgoblin cried out, as he stared at the giant looming in front of him. “I need a distraction from this big brute!”

“I’m on it!” Bullseye searched for a second for something to throw. “Ah, to blazes with it. It’s the blasted Hulk!” He pulls out the revolver he was carrying from his previous battle and fires. The bullet hits its mark perfectly, nailing Hulk right in the eye. The monster screamed and reached up to cover his ruined eyeball, and stumbled back into Nightmare.

“I’m up next!” Hobgoblin pulled one of his higher-yield explosive bombs. “Alright, ugly! You want spicy? Eat a five-alarm!” He threw the bomb, which struck Hulk right in the chest. The explosion rocked the building the two stood on, and the entire area was covered in smoke. Hobgoblin covered his eyes to protect against the debris, and he looked up as the smoke cleared. Hulk was still standing, however, and did not appear any worse for wear. In fact, neither of the villains could not recall him ever appearing bigger. In all the news reports, sure, he was a little big, as he faced off against the Thing or the Army. But he never looked like this. Hobgoblin gulped. “Oh, you’ve gotta be kidding.”

Nightmare, looking at the giant Hulk standing next to him, made a fast decision. “Nice working with you folks, great country, I’m outta here!” He tried to run over where Hobgoblin and Bullseye were standing, but a massive hand clamped down hard on his shoulder. He turned to see the Hulk staring at him, his damaged eye already repaired by his healing factor. Hulk leaned in closely.

“Hulk is ANGRY!!!"

Nightmare tries to breakaway, and gets another 1. There won’t even be enough left FOR a funeral.

Ranged Ninja pushes to try to get Wolverine out of Toughness. 9 on 15 this time, but he gets a 4+1, making it a total of five times this game that I’ve missed by one point, with four of them only needing rolls of 6 or lower.

Everyone else clears.

Final positions:
Nightmare (1 click) – P15 @
Green Goblin – P16 @
Dr. Doom (1 click) – Q18
Bullseye (1 click) – T15 @
Hobgoblin (1 click) – S16 @
Ranged Ninja (1 click) – P10 @@

Honestly, this was probably the ONE time that I’ve ever not wanted a critical hit. I was hoping to at least get Hulk to the tail end of his monstrous clicks, but instead I’ve parked him on his single best click next to one of the biggest glass jaws in the game. It wouldn’t have mattered too much – Hobgoblin still would have missed if he was rolling to hit a 16. But to say that the Hulk’s current dial position terrifies me is a massive understatement.

"First, Hulk deal with pale man, then Hulk destroy man who hurt Hulk's eye!" Hulk lays a massive punch into Nightmare rocking him back from the blow. "Now, your turn!" Hulk leaps back next to Bullseye and Hobgobline.

Iron Man decides he better try to restrain the Hulk before Bullseye is killed. His boot jets fire as he does a quick hop over next to Hulk and Bullseye.

Wolverine has gotten tired of dodging shurikens and moves off the stairs. "Let's see what you're made of," he comments as he moves next to Nightmare in place of the Hulk.

----
-Hulk attacks Nightmare, 12 vs 17, rolling a 5 and dealing 5 clicks (3 after invulnerability).
-Iron Man rolls a 6 to breakaway and moves to S14, carrying Hulk to S15
-Wolverine moves to Q15
Everyone else clears

Thor - R14 (4 clicks)
Iron Man - S15@ (6 clicks)
Hulk - S15@ (5 clicks)
Spider-Man - O15 (1 click)
Daredevil - P17 (1 click)
Wolverine - Q15@ (1 click) (he shoulda been at P13 in the posts before this)

Iron Man's attack of 6 is too low to try to hit Nightmare now, so I decided to move him out of there. Nightmare was nearly assured a incapacitate hit on the Hulk, so I took Hulk away with Iron Man. I was tempted to push Thor for a followup on Nightmare, but pushing him off his last invulnerability didn't seem to be a good move.

Doom stared at the scarlet-clad man before him. “Bah,” Doom spat. “You seek to distract me from the greater threats. Goblin! Carry me to the roof!”

The Green Goblin had finally recovered his wits enough to move, though it took all the effort he had. Daredevil moved to stop him, but was cut short by a bolt of arcane energy from the Enchantress.

“Tell me, handsome. You find me beautiful, don’t you?” she cooed, as she tried to put her charms to work.

“Lady, I don’t know how to break this to you, but you’re really trying to pull that trick on the wrong man here,” Daredevil replied.

On the rooftop, Doom strode boldly up to the Hulk. “Fascinating,” observed the tyrant. “The level of gamma energy you radiate would make an incredible power source for my purposes. Just like this.” Doom placed a gauntleted hand on the Hulk’s arm, and the powerful energy absorption units in his armor set to work. Hulk roared as the gamma energy that powered him was leeched away into Doom’s armor.

“Oh, shut up already, you dumb brute!” Hobgoblin threw another gas bomb at the Hulk. It went off right as the goliath tried to inhale, and he choked as the noxious chemicals filled his weakened lungs.

Elsewhere, one of the Ninja moved up next to Wolverine and drew his sword.

Turn Summary:
Green Goblin rolls for breakaway, and gets a 5. He moves to Q16, dropping Doom in R16.
Enchantress helps Doom perplex his damage to 5 and he attacks Hulk, 11 on 17. He rolls 3+4, doing 3 clicks after Invulnerability.
Enchantress then tries to Mind-Control Daredevil. 8 on 17 is already a longshot, but she only rolls a 6, and DD hit his Super-Senses roll on top of that.
Hobgoblin pushes to Incapacitate the Hulk. Doom uses his team ability to share his attack with Hobgoblin, so it’s 11 on 16. He hits, and Hulk pushes onto his last click.
BCF Ninja moves to Q14.

Final positions:
Nightmare (1 click) – P15
Green Goblin (6 clicks) – Q16 @@
Dr. Doom (1 click) – R16 @
Bullseye (1 click) – T15
Hobgoblin (2 clicks) – S16 @@
Ranged Ninja (1 click) – P10

Hmm... two choices. 1) Use my heaviest hitter to try to take out Daredevil, a 57-point fig with an 8 attack and a 1/3 chance to miss regardless of my attack roll – more like a 75% chance the way I roll – and let Hulk run rampant, or 2) hit Hulk repeatedly and push him onto his last click. I think I’ll go with the latter choice, Bob. Meanwhile, the bodies will probably continue to hit the floor during this next turn. I swear, this is probably the single closest game I’ve ever played. I’ve still got a bit of an uphill battle ahead – Spidey, DD and Wolverine are all fairly fresh, and Thor’s not yet close to dropping either. Even Iron Man’s got a ways to go before he drops. But at the same time... I’ve got DOOM back into the game. That’s gotta count for something.

Daredevil sees Green Goblin getting away. "Oh no you don't, ugly. You don't get away that easily!" He tosses his billy club at Green Goblin, bouncing it off his head and KOing him. The club then glances off Enchantress, though it causes her no harm, before it returns to Daredevil's waiting hands.

Iron Man, seeing Doom and Hobgoblin nearly take out the Hulk, sees his opening. "Thor, when I say, hit Doom with all you've got." Moving into position, Iron Man activates a concentrated and directed EMP at Dr. Doom's armor causing Doom's armor to begin failing. "NOW, THOR!"

"Have at thee!" Mjolnir once again strikes true, this time on Dr. Doom, unbalancing him from the powerful blow.

Iron Man then turns to Wolverine, "Go, Wolverine!"

"This is for Chuck, bub." Wolverine's claws strike deep and Dr. Doom's eyes grow wide as consciousness slips from him. "Noo... impossible... it cannot beeee..." He slumps to the ground in a heap, his armor barely sustaining his life. "Well, shellhead, that makes up for Sabretooth."

Spider-Man speaks up. "Hey, zombie face! Pay attention! You're fighting me, remember?" He lands a punch of his own on the freakish Nightmare, who had gotten distracted by Dr. Doom's sudden demise.

- Daredevil targets both Green Goblin and Enchantress, needing a 4 vs GG and a 12 to hurt Enchantress. He gets a 9 for the KO on GG, but doesn't harm Enchantress.

I've had one game that has had a similar closeness to it. The first tournament I played was a team theme. I had Avengers vs. a Batman team. At the end it came down to a fully healthy Robin vs. V-Wasp and V-Scarlet Witch, both on their last click. I got extremely lucky and got a critical hit vs. Robin with Scarlet Witch and then managed to KO him on my next attacks.

“Well, this was an interesting way to pass a couple minutes, but I think it’s time to leave,” says the Enchantress, almost nonchalant at the certain defeat facing her allies. Daredevil sees her and tries to stop her, but is unable to prevent her from casting a spell. A strange mist surrounds her and spreads over the battlefield. As the haze fades, the heroes find themselves alone on the battlefield.

“By Odin’s beard! Our infernal foes have escaped!” Thor’s voice was filled with rage, and he slammed Mjolnir into a helpless wall in frustration.

“My scanners aren’t turning anything up, either,” reported Iron Man. “Whatever energy they used to escape, I can’t track it. They’re gone.”

“Yeah, bub,” agreed Wolverine. “But it’s going to take them a while to lick their wounds if they want to come back around, and we’ll be ready for them next time.”

Iron Man spoke up. “Okay, folks, enough gloating. Reed and the professor are going to need medical attention soon, and there’s the small matter of finding someone who can help out Dr. Strange. We’ll see them again soon enough.”

“AND THEN HULK SMASH!!!”

* * * * *

Summary:
I pull. I think this officially proves that Iron Man can NOT be underestimated in this game, even if his AV drops. With two KOs to his name and the essential Outwit that took Doom out of the game, I’m guessing Keleko will agree that he was the true MVP for the heroes. Just for the heck of it, I did roll another round just to see what would happen. Bullseye rolled to hit Hulk, needing a crit, and he got it. Unfortunately, it was a critical MISS. Keleko was also rolling spectacularly – almost every time he needed a hit, he could get it, while I kept missing by one.

Still, this was honestly one of the closest games I’ve ever played. If only Iron Man had failed just one of his breakaway rolls! Bah!

Actually, you could have taken out Iron Man next turn after clearing the CC-Ninja this turn. You hit him with the Ranged Ninja in your last rolls, putting Iron Man on his last click, and I had no one in position to hit the ninja. Hulk was probably going to get KOed by Hobgoblin, but he was likely to knock Bullseye out of RCE first. But, with Daredevil, Wolverine, Thor and Spider-Man all still fairly healthy, I agree that getting a win would have been extremely difficult. Having Enchantress run fits her character, anyway, and I can see the villains fleeing after Dr. Doom fell.

Iron Man got 3 KO's: Mandarin, Magneto and Sabretooth. As long as you have a good setup figure, Iron Man is a great finishing attacker. This is how I planned to use him from the start. Having his outwit be key to Dr. Doom's was also quite nice. I officially like Iron Man. His E version is almost identical to the V but with a lower starting attack. I'd say he and Thor were the MVP's since Thor was needed to set up for the KO. Thor never missed an attack, either.

It is amusing how the dice server worked opposite this game compared to the last game we played. In the first game I couldn't make attack rolls to save my life, either. I do know I was hanging on every dice roll I sent to the server, though.

Excellent game, Phantom. I've really enjoyed both the games we played. I think our next matchup is going to be a Masters of Evil vs. Avengers themed game.

I could have almost definitely taken out Iron Man, and possibly Wolverine and the Hulk. But there was almost no way for me to take out Thor, DD, AND Spidey, unless you started to get very unlucky with your rolls.

That was truly awesome display of mixing the dice rools with a write-up. Truly you guys have the right idea when it comes to gamming. How do you guys set up games like these? You mentioned a server...help a fellow Avenger out and explain how all this works...Sorry if it annoys you or anything but I've never had the opportunity to play online and this really was great!!!!!!

We're actually still fighting it out. For a quick summary, Iron Man was KOed by a ranged ninja. Wolverine was hit with a critical hit from the BCF Ninja, knocked off the roof, and then finished off by Enchantress. Nightmare pushed to attack Spider-man, rolled a critical miss and knocked himself out. Hobgoblin missed attacking the Hulk.

On my turn, Daredevil missed attacking Enchantress. Hulk pushed, hit Hobgoblin and knocked himself out. Thor then finished off Hobgoblin. I figured Hulk was gonna get KOed by Hobgoblin eventually, so I got one last use out of him.

Great job you guys!
The multiple-choice ending was cool, too. Kinda like a comic ending with the bad guys running and a heroclix ending with more smashing!

Outstanding dialog too, a real pleasure to follow along. I look forward to any future battles you guys play.

Thanks!

Well, like Keleko said, we're still hashing it out. I should mention something about Nightmare's death -- he actually further extended my rash of missing easy attacks by one, as well as raising the bar. He needed a THREE to hit. That's basically anything but snake-eyes.

I still say I should have gotten knockback off the roof for Spidey, just because he would have been laughing too hard.

Phantom
05/20/2003, 22:04
Oh, and Bullseye just plinked Spidey for one. Spidey had already pushed hijmself to hit Nightmare/gain Outwit, so he's now taken a total of 6 clicks of damage.

And the status update: Bullseye’s toast, having pushed himself to death to get one last click of damage in on Daredevil before DD could get the AE points for the KO. Thor also just roasted the Ranged Hand ninja, but not before the Ninja scored perplexed-damage hit to take Thor out of Invulnerability. I’m actually starting to regret conceding the game so early. The villains are still showing a slight chance of survival here. Current tally:

Surviving Villains:
Enchantress (1 click)
BCF Ninja (1 click)

Surviving Heroes:
Thor (5 clicks)
Spider-Man (5 clicks)
Daredevil (3 clicks)

Well, you didn't really concede since we're still playing. However, the villains conceding in the storyline made the story fit their attitudes right.

Aaaaaaand it’s over. Thor managed to get out to his full 10 range, and Enchantress stood no chance as he nailed her for 3 on a push (Toughness Outwitted). With only Psychic Blast left at an 8 range and substandard attack, and Spidey still having his Outwit, I’ve got almost zero chance of winning anymore.

This are the kind of game I love Hero Clix for - down to the wire where you're hanging on every die roll and move. When the game isn't decided until the very end, you know you've got a good game. It may not be great for tournament standings in points, but for sheer fun there's nothing better.

Post-game musings

My overall strategy at the start of this game was to keep Doom occupied with targets of my own choosing while I worked on his other heavy hitters first. I knew I wouldn't be able to hurt Doom for a while until I got someone with outwit. I did have the hope of getting him mind controlled with the professor and then getting hit with his own EE splash damage, but that didn't work, either. After that I mostly managed to succeed with keeping Doom tied down with figures like Mr. Fantastic and Daredevil. Doom got free a couple of times and caused pretty heavy damage to my team as a result. I was hoping to get to use Reed's outwit and hit Doom earlier, but that obviously didn't happen.

I got pretty lucky with taking out the other two main ranged hitters very early. Thor and Iron Man make an excellent 1-2 attack team. The rest of it was taking on targets as I could and trying to knock down his 4! perplers.

I am amused that mind control ended up being a complete non-factor the whole game, despite there being 5 mind controllers on the map. Only one mind control attempt succeeded (Leader with Thor), but the subsequent action then failed.

Who was the fifth MC character? Mandarin, Leader, Enchantress, Professor, and...?

You did a great job at keeping me out from doing my own strategy – hit Iron Man early, so his rather pathetic mid-dial AV couldn’t hurt me. That was Mandarin’s mission in the first turn – he NEEDED to mind-control Strange, so that Strange could then do the easy shot on Iron Man with RCE and get his AV down to an 8. That would have let me then worry about Thor.

I think your biggest advantage was that your team is just designed to let you push early and often. Hulk’s stats get better, Thor drops slowly, Fantastic and Spidey become Outwitters, and Wolverine doesn’t lose too much, either.

If you look at my team, almost all of my heaviest hitters pay a hefty price for pushing. BCF Ninja loses BCF, Magneto’s stats drop like a brick, Doom and Enchantress drop Perplex fast, and Mandarin’s defense is pretty bad once he loses Energy Shield. This left me feeling a lot of pressure to play conservatively – a decision that probably cost me in the long run.

Keleko
05/21/2003, 21:37
I guess I counted one too many MC figure.

Iron Man is also rather pushable, other than his dropping attack value. He gets Invulnerability back, damage goes up to 4, and he trades running shot for charge. Outwit at the end when he's mostly combat ineffective turns him into support. He actually keeps his 7 attack for quite a few clicks, and as a second shot, 7 isn't too bad for hitting most wounded figures.
