View Full Version : Return of the NEW MUTANTS!
Clairmont and Sienkevich did a one shot story in X-Men Unlimited #43. My local comic shop guy tells me this is because they are bringing back a monthly NEW MUTANTS TITLE!!! This is great news for three very enticing reasons:
1: New stories of my favorite team all grown up.
2: The actual possibility of seeing these characters as Clicks!
3: Cypher might be brought back in some acceptable way
as mr Clairmont (or whoever will write the issues) sees fit.
Not sure whether I'd like to see doug dragged for his long slumber or not.... plus Warlock's dead, and there's that A-typical "douglock" that even Kitty had to get used to....
anyway...I thought this was great news for us NM fans...pick up the issue and read it; there's also a twightlight zone ripoff story centering around lockheed. (HC impacting the MU?)
also for NM fans, check out my Magic mod

Its a bittersweet story with three of the founding members dead..... does anyybody know when and how wolfsbane lost her ability to transform?

Wolfsbane lost her powers when she was depending Muir Island and Moira MacTaggert from Mystique and her Brotherhood. Sabertooth gave Rhane a beating, and Mystique shot her with a gun, possibily the one made by Forge, that makes mutant's lose their powers. The creaors of the new book say they'l deal with Rhane's missing powers. And speaking of Wolfsbane, she's already one Heroclix in the right direction for New Mutants fans.
apparently; though she can't transform, her other powers are in place.
But let me get this straight...... Mystique has a gun that cancels out a mutant's powers; and she uses it on Wolfsbane? Seems like kind of a waste from her perspective.... She could've done a great deal more damage with that. what was at the Muir Isle facility she was after?
I'm not up on the New Mutants anymore. Who else from the original group is dead?
Sadly, The best was the first to go: Douglas Ramsey, the Mutant known as Cypher. He was killed by a third rate villain with a gun. Next to go was Warlock. Killed because he wasn't needed by the writers anymore; poor guy. He died in Genosha in Rahne's arms. Last but most peculiur; Magick, Illyana Rasutin; Collosus' little sister. after the Inferno incident, she was left regressed to her natural age; as she would have been if she weren't raised out of time in Limbo. Her death was an exclamation point in a story drivivg home the "legacy Virus" storyline that ran through the X-Titles in the late 90's. the most significant reprocussion here was Collosus' defection to Magneto's Acolytes.
and so there you have it; the sad tale of New Mutants lost in the line of duty. I still maintain that Doug's death is the most ham-handed blunder in comics; and a wound on the Marvel universe that will never heal.

ha, there is speak of unlimited x-men, the greatest comic currently produced. See even Claremont writes non lethal dialouge in unlimited x-men. Or Mr. Clairmont, if you prefer. I assume that's the french pronunciation.
43 was a decent issue. However monsewer Clarimon' is the wrong guy to work with Skein-what-the-hell-did-he-just-draw-kevich. Not that I don't like bill, you just need a good writer behind him.
uh....oooooooo'kay.:ermm:
Havn't read it yet, But just wanted to tell you guys; New Mutants #1 is on the shelves. Give you my reveiw later.

I read it. Pretty good intro story. Without giving away any spoilers, a brand new mutant is introduced and the story is mostly about her trying to cope with society and society trying not to cope with her. At the end she's greeted by a face New Mutant fans will be familiar with and it leads us towards the next issue.
Why can't they start runs with action anymore?
I read it, it's nice. Great line from Dani Moonstar in it (I won't spoil, but I laughed when I read it).
It looks like Dani is going to be the leader. Good for her!
The cover shows Magma, Wolfsbane, Dani and Karma. But only Dani is inside. I hate the old bait and switch.

Good Intro story, but she seems a little too much like a cross between Magma and Sunspot (in Character) I wonder who else will be in this title? Do you suppose any of the Generation X characters will show up here? I could see good things coming here; especially if it interacts with New X-men the way it seems its going to have to. I love NM.

Hellboy- Mystique went to Muir Island to get info on the Legacey Virus so she could make is affect humans and use it as a bio-terrorist weapon. I liked the first new issue of New Mutants even though it was a little lacking in action. Series don't sart with action-packed blow outs because marvel is trying to get new readers, and thus needs to establish characters. the purpose of the Tsunami imprint is to mak books that translate well into trade paperback collections. Thus, the stories take longer to take, and read better in one sitting. It takes a few issues for real action so that conflict and tesion is built up, and then there is to be mega pay off.
I think its clear they're actually trying to get OLD readers. I mean win back readers from the 80's and earlier.
Well, this is not picking up so quickly. I like the characters, and the potential is there, but the art is sub-par, especially for new mutants. The cover art is good, but they keep pimping female characters that arn't even in the issues. Do they think we're buying this for pin-ups? I don't like the slow wind up. I forsee three more issues of this, probably featuring the rest of the original team on the cover, without including them in the narative, focusing mainly on portaits of the (hello? naked?) female characters.
I'm afraid. This has really got to pick up.
anybody hear any news about what's coming up...? need a new CSN....
I ask you: when is this series going to stop sucking??
New Mutants is a title that needs to be honored. so far this is ####. Give us either some action or some story, but this is pretty much just animation style cartoons. this is really tickin me off.

Cypher was my favorite hero in comics at the time and I was very upset to see a character with so much potential killed off in such a lame way.
They left a door open to bring Doug back, but they didn't take it. He was infected with the Technovirus (anyone remember the issue that ends with a close up of his eye? And inside is a small bit of warlock-type techno-circuitry?)
They brought back that weird Douglock thing sometime after but it was justa bit stupid IMHO... I agree with the sentiment put for earlier in this thread, not one of Marvel's better decisions.
(And of course Warlock's time was running out without Doug - they were the yin/yang super-hero, couldn't really have one without the other).
I haven't followed the new title because I dislike the art style and marvel's "sexy" covers and style - style but no substance (or story).
Sorry 'bout the long rant - I'd forgotten how bitter I was/am over the death of Cypher.
*smile*
AMARRA AQUILLA!!!
THAT is Magma's NamE!

I have lapsed in purchasing the series in question here. looks like the art took a slight (slight) upturn, and the action has at least started, but I really hope this picks up. I'm getting some backissues this weekend. I'll give you my critique after...:p
Issue Seven finally seems to be getting this title on track. 1 of 6 story arc called "the Ties that bind" Is starting to show us a direction for this title. Thank goodness. The Art has Improved a great deal. If I had the issue in my hands, I'd complement the Artist by name for making an attempt to keep the character design and overall look, while at the same time elevating the detail and presentation of the panels well above the first six issues. and best of all? whoever is witing these new stories seems to know the characters. (what a clever idea) as they not only corrected The serious oversight of mis-naming Magma (her Name IS Amara!) by not only Using her correct name, but bolding it as if to say "ok, ok, get off our backs!" I think that if this keeps picking up, it will be a nice companion to New X-men, and the stories about the school that are developing there.
Finally I have something nice to say!!!
I'm still willing to give this at least until the end of this arc to pick up. An upcoming issue features a reunion of the surviving team members... I suspect It'll fall short of former glories. I hate Wolfsbane, and she used to be one of my favorites. I can't beleive they turned Karma into a cliche' Token Lesbian, and the art is still way too cartoony and weak, though it has improved from the first arc to the second. Sometimes, when you're a fan, you just have to wait, complain, and hope that it gets better; but I have a budget. I loved the original series. I want them to make me love this one.... but the clock is ticking.

I was a reader of the New Mutants when it first came out in the eighties...and stopped reading it as it was sort of just copping off the Uncanny X-men. Having got back into comics, I see New Mutants was just the beginning of a trend for Marvel.
But if you go back to those early issues, you would find the same complaints. Stories a bit off, artwork that is so-so, etc, etc...
As with nearly every movie and play ever written (save Star Trek II, The Empire Strikes Back & Shakespeare's Richard the Third) the original is still the best....beware pale imitators
