View Full Version : DC Alan Scott - Green Lantern or Sentinel?
Alan Scott was the original Green Lantern (the one with the weakness to wood.) But these days he's called Sentinel, although he wears his original costume. Which name do you prefer?

i like him as sentinel more actually
Ok,most of us know that Alan Scott became Green Lantern because he made a ring and lantern out of the mystical star heart. How exactly does this fit in with the Green Lantern mythos? Is he watched over by the guardians? Is he even considered a Green Lantern?
He'll always be Green Lantern to me.

Wouldn't the guardians being from OA know that the lantern would one day be in Alan's hand because they are all knowing or know the fate of the green metal stuff. IF they did know this isn't this just there way in giving him the ring and making him a Green Lantern. I guess Alan just didn't know that he was a "Green Lantern" so he made his own name. So maybe they will either do two different forms of him in two different sets or a unique and one regular.

when he came out, he had nothing to do with the guardians, or green lantern corp, all that came with Hal (written in). He will always be Green Lantern
So DC has yet to explain this coincidence?

Dude everything in green lanterns revolves around the guardians trust me on this one i don't know that much about green lantern except for the facts i mentioned earlier and that basically it is like lord of the rings but the guardians always know where the ring/lantern is going.

the gaurdians ARE aware of alan but hes not technically a member of the corp. they have talked to him before and are aware of him because they also created the star heart, but again he isnt considered apart of the corp

From WikiPedia:
Centuries later, it was explained, when Scott found the mystical lantern, it had no memory of its true origins, save a vague recollection of the uniform of its last master. This was the origin of Scott’s distinctive costume. Due to its damaged link to them, the Guardians presumed the ring and lantern to be lost in whatever cataclysm overcame their last owner of record. Thus Scott was never noticed by the Guardians and went on to carve a history of his own apart from that of the Corps, sporting a ring with an artificially induced weakness against anything made of wood. Honoring this separate history, the Guardians never moved to force Scott to relinquish the ring, formally join the Corps, or adopt its colors, although during the Rann-Thanagar War, it was revealed that Scott is an honorary member of the Corps.

so badda boom badda bing!
scott is an honorary member of the Corps. check
Scott is given his personal space to wear his own uniform and unique and seperate title as THE "Green lantern" , however not being A "Green Lantern" officer.
also check.
Personally I rather call him by what he was originally called: The Green Lantern.
would anyone question Jay gharrick to be "the Flash" ? or any of the Robins to Be Robin while donning their respective mantels?
My thought process is in line with what the specific character made his or her career as, is what that particular character should be reffered to as.
Sinestro used to be a green lantern, but he created his own sinerstro Corps and weilds a yellow power ring, yet we dont call him 'Yellow Lantern" we adhere to call him Sinestro becasue he built his rep being called as such.

To add to what the wikipedia entries stated, Alan Scott was first called Green Lantern then, after he became young again and for awhile after he reverted back to his elder age, was called Sentinel. In the pages of JSA he returned to being called Green Lantern. Earth has five Green Lanterns(Alan, Hal, Jon, Guy and Kyle) who all just refer to each other by their first names. Just like The Flashes( Jay, Barry and Wally) always refer to each other by their first names).
But, for the record, I've always preferred him as The Green Lantern.

Holy thread resurrection Batman!
INDEED, but I do like Alan...despite the ridiculous weakness....which is inherent in any green Lantern.
HA

But if you read the previous GL series, before this current one, in issue #19, when the spirit of Alan shows (to Hal, Jon and Guy) the past, the ring did not have a yellow weakness or any weakness at all, at first. Alan's predessor, Yalan Gar, was indeed a member of the Corps.

That link should explain it better.

One other bit of trivia on this...
The Starheart that "powers" Alan's battery/ring is magical/mystical energy and was created by the Guardians in the early days of the universe to help harness and control magic (since magic is not nice and orderly the way the smurfs like things) by collecting a bunch of "rogue" magic and creating the Starheart as a way to keep it contained. So Alan was tied to the Guardians/GLC right from the start...he just didn't know it.
