Wiz Kids Midwest Championships May 23-25
There will be six Heroclix events at the Pastimes Store in Niles, IL (Chicago northside suburb) over the weekend of May 23-25. (There will also be 6 MechWarrior events and six mageKnight events, including the marqee). The events include two DC and four Marvel tournaments, in formats such as sealed booster (1), booster draft (1), and various scenarios for preconstructed teams (4). The details for each tournament including date, time, format, victory conditions, and cost are listed at the website. prizes are to be awarded for the winner of each event, and then an overall Fellowship Winner and Champion are to be selected based upon the players performance across the entire weekend. The first event starts at 7:00 PM on Friday.
Here is the link for specific event details and address/directions to the venue!
Please go to www.pastimes.net and follow the links, or you can just direct people to www.pastimes.net/wkmwchamps.htm
If you limit the game to 10 turns you are not judging who is the best but who got the lucky roll first. there can be little time to manuever and set up a good game cause you have a limited turn count to KO things so you have to just do it instead of manuever to it.
If you think about it his means without pushing each figure gets 5 actions maximum.
Why are you doing this 10 turn limit?

Tournaments have various time limts, ways of earning points and hero restrictions for the following reasons: variety, as part of the team building strategy, and to encourage less castling/more brawling. This is also the reason that medics are not allowed in some events, and points are only being awarded for KO's in some events. The goal is to encourage active games with a high level of interaction, rather than static, slow games. Finally, in the evening matches, having only 10 round matches help a great deal with keeping the events on time, so (younger) players who may have a strict curfew can still play. I hope that helps explain the reasoning, and that we will see you there in a couple of weekends, Greg.

I'm intrigued, Gregor, but could you tell us what kind of prizes will be awarded?
While I applaud your creativity in providing a wide array of activity for the weekend, I have to agree with Gaidin that not all of it matches my personal taste. In addition, it's a major commitment of time and money to participate in all six events.
So for those of us on the fence, could you tell us exactly what's at stake?
Thanks!

I've been there. It's a fun place, but a little hard to find. Its in the strip behind the Bennegan's. The owner is great. The judge is good.
I am a huge fan of the interaction and the limiting of figures and scenariotype things but I just think that the ten turns makes it more of who gets the lucky roll first versus who has the better skill.
i like the rest of the scenario ideas and team build limits. I think the cloud one is hysterical and can just imagine knocking someone off the edge of a cloud :) besides imagining some of the heros looking down and saying wow I can fly I can fly I can fly :)
And for the time restraints just set a time limit instead of a turn limit. ( hey with ten turns I would be done real quick depending on muy opponent but I do know one guy that would take al three hours for ten turns if you let him :) and ravenproject should know of whom I talk :)
Well I just don't like that you are crowning an official champion based on a turn limit that will make it more luck than skill.

I d'know... I'd say ol' boy would become more decisive if he knew there were exactly ten rounds no matter how long he took.
Hey Gregor, I had another question come to mind... how will they settle ties for Fellowship?

Hey Guys, thanks for all of the great feedback. Hopefully, 10 to 12 turns is long enough for the luck to swing both ways. (Note, the big final event, worth up to 1,000+ points per round toward the Championship, may not have a turn limit.) We are trying to be inventive, maximizing the fun and fair play. Last weekend we tried a World Wrestling Federation Marvel event, where only characters with Superstrength could be on the team, two figs total, up to 300 points. It was a blast!
Now to answer the question about prizes, the only thing I know for sure is that there will be LE prizes for some or all events. All of the prize support has yet to arrive. In the past, if there were not enough prizes for the events, the store has given out boosters, gift certificates, picks from the singles case (which last weekend included over 20 heroclix U's like Sauron, Apocalypse, Mr. Fixit, Xplosion Hulk and a Nightcrawler). However, if you look on the Wizkids website today, you will see that this event is now the lead announcement on the site. I know that it is expected there will be a dropship for Mech Warrior for the Grand Prize. The staff at Wiz Kids have told the store owner they are sending great support, but it had not arrived at noon today.
As soon as I know more, I will post the information.
If you have not been to the venue before, it is huge. This weekend it is hosting the Magic Prerelease, and at the last prerelease they had over 400 players. There are four restaurants in the strip center (2 Korean/Oriental Buffets, Taco Bell, and Bennigans) with four more fast food restaurants, a grocery store, a mall and a farmers market within a block or two. they have also started having a pizza place bring in hot pizza and salads for sale in the store during every Saturday with a big event.
Finally, I am glad you liked the cloud scenario, I designed that one:classic:

Excellent Question-Ties for Fellowship points will be determined by number of first place, then number of second place votes.
For those of you who have not gone to the website, fellowship voting will be handled in this manner, each player votes for all three of thier opponents rating them 1,2 and 3. The person selected as first place gets three points, second two points, third place one point.
In the next meeting with the other judges, I will raise this question, because we could well get two players with nine points, or all first place votes, at some point over the weekend. Thanks for pointing this out, Greg.
I do not think this will be a problem for the Fellowship Championship award, as the voting will be spread out across six events, Thanks again for the question, Greg.

That's a bogus line of reasoning. Events are kept on time by watching the clock. When 50 minutes is up, the judge calls time and it's over.
I've never actually counted to see how many rounds our typical 50 min tourney goes, but 10 rounds sounds totally inadequate.
Also, isn't it a logistical problem? Do you have a judge sitting at each pairing counting rounds? If you're counting on the players to count, some probably won't while in other cases it could lead to arguments. Someone claiming the game is over to preserve a lead or keep a few more guys alive, while the other guy says there's still one more round or two.
The only time we've ever counted rounds was in the hurricane scenario (since it matters in that one). I can tell you that even trying to be honest about it, it's easy to lose the round count if you're not used to keeping track of it.

Your points are certainly valid. There is local venue in Chicago called Graham Cracker Comix which runs almost all of its events on a 10 round cycle. They have been reasonably successful, and there have not been any problems at events I have attended, but I am going there tonight and will check with the judge for his feedback.
I think our primary goal is to goose the players into interaction. We had a lot of problems with castling-leading to games that were just not much fun, and our goal is for as many players as possible to have as good a time as possible. Chocolate milk and pretzels kind of fun (although I would rather have a beer!). You are absolutely right, there could be disagreement on the timing. In the past we have used judge provided turn counting sheets (numbered one to ten in two columns-an idea from the GCC judge) or dice for upkeep of time records. Our judges would certainly be available for dispute resolution.
Finally, our goal was to have primarily scenario types of tournaments, even with sealed and draft. If you notice, many if not most of the Wiz Kids scenarios from rule books or posted on the website do have turn limits built in. We were viewing it as part of the strategy. Please try to consider it a team design challenge-In a 10 round DC game, you need to know that rookie Doomsday (137 points) may not get to the action in time to be a force, whereas V Hawk (for 69 points) could get there faster (starting at the same speed and going up from 6 to 10 after pushing once). Figs like Whirlwind, Flash and Quicksilver become much more fun. As with any scenario, hopefully there are many layers to consider in these-we want people to have fun stretching a little outside the normal 300/400/500-point battles.
I hope this helps you understand our reasoning, Greg.

Okay, I'm home and it's time for more detailed questions, going event by event.
General:
Will the winner of each tournament be decided by total victory points, or by total wins with victory points as the tiebreaker?
Marvel Universe Sealed:
Will players be allowed to change teams between rounds?
DC Cloud:
Will an arch-enemy bonus apply should one AE knock another off the cloud?
Marvel 400:
Is the 150% granted in addition to normal victory points, or instead? (Example: I've KOed 300 points at the end of turn 6. Do I get 450 or 750 points?)
How does the Arch-Enemy bonus fit in?
DC Sealed:
Just to clarify, any figure without a team symbol is considered Neutral? So, for example, I could play E Nightwing with V Joker?
Marvel 200:
Can we use wildcards with the single team?
Are Minions of Doom/Spider-Man considered teams of their own?
Thanks for being so responsive!

Here are your answers (well, all but one):
General:
Q-Will the winner of each tournament be decided by total victory points, or by total wins with victory points as the tiebreaker? A-Victory in a single event is determined first by wins, then by victory points. However, the Overall Midwest Champion is decided purely on Victory points.
Marvel Universe Sealed:
Q-Will players be allowed to change teams between rounds? A-Good question, we will have to discuss this and make a final decision.
DC Cloud:
Q-Will an arch-enemy bonus apply should one AE knock another off the cloud? A-Yes, you certainly do get the bonus points.
Marvel 400:
Q-Is the 150% granted in addition to normal victory points, or instead? (Example: I've KOed 300 points at the end of turn 6. Do I get 450 or 750 points?) A-A total of 450 points are awarded in your example.
Q-How does the Arch-Enemy bonus fit in? A-First archenemy points are calculated, then the 1.5x modfier is applied.
DC Sealed:
Q-Just to clarify, any figure without a team symbol is considered Neutral? So, for example, I could play E Nightwing with V Joker? A-Correct.
Marvel 200:
Q-Can we use wildcards with the single team?
Are Minions of Doom/Spider-Man considered teams of their own? A-Spiderman and Minions of Doom are considered distinct teams, so cannot be added to the Xmen or FF.
Thanks for all of the questions, and please keep them coming, Greg.

Here's another one.
What do you take home from the sealed draft tournament? The figures you pulled from your 3 boxes, or the figures you end up with for your team?
M!
Gregor Bond
05/15/2003, 16:34
Another good question. In this sealed draft event, you will take home the figures you draft. So if when you open the first booster you see Superman U and Superman V, you must pick the one you wish to keep and play with before you pass, as the box will not be passed back to you for a second pick (groups passing will include at least four players).
I was also asked another question off-line. In the event with 250 point teams, how many actions will each player get? You will get three actions per turn.
Thanks for the continued interest, Greg.
Gregor Bond
05/15/2003, 19:39
To answer RavenProjects previously unanswered question (about the Marvel sealed event), in both the Marvel and DC sealed events, you will not be able to swap figures in and out from among the 12 you open/draft. The team you register prior to the start of Round 1 will be the team played throughout the event. This was agreed upon by all three judges.
I apologize for not being able to answer every question immediately, but although I will be one of the judges, I will not be the registered Envoy/Head Judge-per the Official WizKids General Tournament Rules-bottom of page 8-effective May 15, 2003. As such, I need to confirmcheck with him on some questions.
These rules will apply to all of the Heroclix events taking place over the Midwest Championship Weekend-if you would like to see a copy there is a new link at the WizKids webpage as the newest announcement in News and Updates (replacing the Midwest Championship news).

Gregor Bond has been doing an amazing job getting you guys info, I thought I would add some more details and some clarifications:
WizKids Weekend - Midwest Championships
A weekend of huge tournaments, fun, trading & huge prizes.
Not to mention - you might get to walk away with the
Midwest Championship Trophy
from MageKnight, MechWarrior or HeroClix.
For all games there are prizes for all individual tournaments, as well as an overall prize for the "WizKids Weekend - Midwest Championships" winner!!!
Fellowship prizes as well.
Giveaways all weekend long!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CLARIFICATIONS:
Before going on to the schedule below, and then to the individual games, please take a moment for us to clarify some of the questions that have been raised about this weekend.
"Do I have to stay the whole weekend or play in every event to get prizes?"
No, and no. Prizes will be awarded after each tournament, for that tournament. The prize ceremony at the end of the weekend is for the Midwest Champion, Fellowship Prizes and some other random prizes we will be giving away. You do not need to be present to actually receive any prize - if you are not here we will send it to you.
"Are there actually going to be trophies, or is it just a title?"
Actual trophies......(ooooohhhhh, ahhhhhhh) Oh, and the braggin' rights that come with the title.
"What are the prizes going to be?"
The prize support from WizKids is on its way, and as soon as we receive it, I will post some highlights here. I can tell you that outside of what WizKids gives us, Pastimes will be putting in a booster per person per tournament entered. So, if there are 100 people who play in each of the six tournaments (combined MW, MK & HC), then for the weekend we would be handing out 600 boosters on top of what WizKids sends!!!!!!!! We are also putting together some of the oversized figures and other goodies we might have or be getting. All I can say is that I think everyone will be very happy with the prizes.
"Why does it cost more than some of the tournaments at GenCon & Origins?"
First, their is no entry fee into the overall event, just for the ones you chose to play in. At GenCon there is a badge fee. Also, we have to pay for the product, it is not being given to us by WizKids. Then there is stuff like paying for the lights, rent, tables, judges food (hey, we aren't gonna let them starve!) and other stuff like that. Also, as you can see above, we are taking a huge portion of the money brought in and putting it towards other prizes.
"Why was the notice for this tournament so late?"
Good question, no easy answer. Let's chalk it up to a learning lesson and try to move on - with my sincerest apologies. Next time, and we really hope there will be a next time, we will definitely give at least a couple months notice.
"I have particular questions about specific events, who should I ask?"
The people to address questions to are the following:
HeroClix - gregorbond@aol.com
MageKnight - vidruelz@attbi.com
MechWarrior - kenstrissel@hotmail.com
Venue questions, i.e. how do I get there, Info@Pastimes.Net
"This info is helpful, but it did not answer my questions. What should I do?"
Either call us at Pastimes, 847-470-9636 or e-mail us at Info@Pastimes.net and we will get you taken care of.
Overall, we really are looking forward to this being a great big fun event - that we get to do again, and again and again. We will be able to bring you large events like this again if we get everyone's support. Please try to come if you can - I am sure you will have a great time!!!!!
Thanks for your interest, patience and time.

I'll also have to put in a good word about Pasttimes. I was able to attend an event at their location for another game last year and was very impressed with the place.
While there, a friend ended up conning me into buying this new game called "Heroclix". One starter and booster later, and I was hooked.
The short notice is a problem for many of us, but if you can make it, I'm sure they will have a quality progream set up.
Hope the events go well.

No preregistration is required. You can show up Sunday and just play in the two events that day if you like. Normally, Alan allows players to register for the weekend-long discount right up to the time of the first event, and often offers different discounts for playing multiple games during the actual event.

The following question was sent to me directly via email:
In the Cloud scenario, are flyers allowed at al and are objects to be used? The answers are there will be no objects on the clouds, and no flyers will be allowed, so anyone knocked off the cloud gets the long fall (KO). Please remember the R Dove does not fly (despite her flyong base) so she can be used, but she will not be able to carry other figures.
Is Sinestro considered a flyer?

New question for you, Gregor...
In the Marvel 400, you say "only a single copy of any figure may be used."
Does this mean the figure as a whole, or the exact collector's number?
(For example, could I use R and E Vampire Lackey, or only R?)
What about the LE version of a character?
(For example, could I use R Vampire Lackey and Rachel van Helsing?)
Also... when will registration start on Friday?
Thanks again!

Funky Jett, thanks for the comment and we are sorry you cannot make it.
RavenProject-to answer your excellent question, let me clarify the rule for the 400 point Marvel Constructed event. The phrase "a single copy of any figure" should have also included the phrase "at any level of experience", so if you play Ben Grimm you cannot also play the rookie Thing. So for those figures with LEs, the LE counts as a copy of the figure-if you play Bruce Banner no Savage Hulk on your team.
RavenProject
05/20/2003, 11:46
So for those figures with LEs, the LE counts as a copy of the figure-if you play Bruce Banner no Savage Hulk on your team.
Your example muddies the issue, I'm afraid, since Bruce Banner and Savage Hulk are entirely different figures.
Did you mean Bruce Banner and Veteran Hulk, maybe?
If not, does this mean that other cases of the same character with different figures are not allowed? (i.e. Wolverine/Logan/Weapon X, Hulk/Mr. Fixit/Hulk)
While I'm at it (god, I'm a pest...) will you be judging duplicate Uniques by name or collector's number?
(Note: Not all of these questions mean I'm *personally* planning to try them, just trying to be prepared for what I may encounter. :))
Thanks!

This looks like a fun weekend - I hope to be able to make it.
Question on the sealed draft event:
They will secretly pick a single figure and then pass
I take it the idea behind this is to NOT allow the players to see what others are drafting until the draft procedure is completed, so that they won't be able to deliberately obstruct each other's efforts? A good idea in theory. Logistically, tho, how are you going to do this? When players open their boosters, won't the contents be visible to all? Assuming you provide some sort of "cover" for each player to open boosters behind, what do they then do with the figs they choose - do they keep their drafts behind the "cover" while passing the rejects along to the next player?
I don't ask this to be a pain, but rather because it sounds awful tricky to me - unless you have a judge watching over the players, allowing them to draft in secrecy could make cheating way too easy. People might be able to smuggle in their own figs to build a much more efficient team than is usually possible with sealed events. Just thought I'd point it out.

Some Prize Info!!!
PRIZES:
We have been getting many, many questions about prizes for this event. Here is what I have to say about prizes. Besides the many LEs being sent by WizKids - and there are some seriously cool ones, they are having to bring our shipment of booster pack prizes here in a very large truck! We are counting on many, many of you being here - because the more people there are, the bigger the prizes will be!!!!
Oh, and about those limited prizes from WizKids, let's just say that Bruce Banner might be getting Dropshipped onto the Dungeon Tiles at Pastimes. Hmmm..... and there is much more where that came from!!!!!!! Many, many figs which have never even been seen before.
I will post some specific figs later - I just got the list!!!!!
Hope to see you all this weekend!!

Mind you, my friends think I'm insane. Running a tourney on Thursday, playing six games over the weekend, then Monday returning to my usual group at Graham Crackers. But I just can't resist the challenge.
That said... yep, more questions (plus the ones on the last page).
Will maps be provided, or will be bring our own?
If maps are provided, *can* we bring our own?
Are we allowed to bring food and/or beverages?
Carried over from before... when can we start to register on Friday, and when will you let us in on Saturday and Sunday?
Thanks again!

I don't know that I expect to come away with anything, but it will be an experience either way. Good training for GenCon:)
Also got some questions:
Cloud event, no medics; does this rule out anyone with support, like Desaad, or just the generics who actually have the word "medic" in their fig name?
And the no dupes events, this applies to generics as well? Only one doombot of any level on your team? And say you were to use the LE Dr. Doom, he would count as your one doombot?
Thanks and see you Fri!
(Oh, and should I bring cash, or check? Cash always works, right?;))
Now if I could just find some time to build my teams.

I can answer a few more questions.
By WizKids new Tourny rules, you are responsible for bringing a map to the tournaments. So please, I encourage you and all other players reading these posts, bring as many maps as you can/want. I will bring several "emergency" maps for players who do not have any.
Alan provides multiple kinds of soda, plus candy and chips for purchase in the store. He also (often) has a pizza parlor provide hot pizza and salads for purchase in the store during day long events on the weekend. A lot depends on attendence. He does not allow outside food into the shop. In the shopping mall are Bennigans, Taco Bell and two Korean buffet restaurants. There are also several more restaurants and a grocery store across the street.
I think you can register any time before 7:00 PM on Friday, the judges will be arriving early, but I would like to think not before 5. We are doing a walk through tonight, so I may have more details tomorrow.
For the question concerning figures " a single copy of any figure", refers to personality for this event, not sculpt or name. So, in the examples of characters you made-they will be thought of as duplicates, i.e. you can only use one Wolverine/Logan/Weapon X, only one of any of the electras, or one Hulk/Mr. Fixit/Hulk LE/Savage Hulk in your team.
Finally, I have seen the LE prize list, and let me confirm that there are some highly sought after figures on the list. Personally, I wish I was playing, as there at least 6 LEs I do not own available as prizes.
Gregor Bond

More answers:
For the "no medics" question, it means no piece with the word medic in the figs name.
Yes, for the no nupes event, that applies to the generics as well. In fact, to be clearer, it means no duplication of characters, so you can only play one figure that is wolverine/weapon x/logan-if you play the E wolverine, then you can not play any other of the wolverine characters. For the generics, that means you can play the LE Doombot, but then you cannot play the R.
And finally, I know Alan accepts cash and credit cards, and there is a bank in the shopping center and a grocery store across the street, each with cash stations.
FYI-based on emails, I know there are several other people from Milwaukee/Southern WI asking questions and thinking about coming or definately coming down, and we welcome you all!

Man, I am still trying to figure out how to coordinate things to get there. I'm actually going to be in the Chicago area on Friday taking my kids to Brookfield Zoo.
I supposed it would be too much to ask for a romper room set-up for daycare, right?? :ermm:

Your kids are lucky, Brookfield is a great zoo. Make it a weekend, did you know that the Shedd Aquarium just opned their new wild reef exhibit with shark tank, I cannot wait to go!There is a ton of room in the store, but you should call Alan and ask him for suggestions. They normally do Pokemon and other "kids" games on Saturdays.
I will tell Alan to stock up on the diet, as you will rarely see me without a diet coke in my hand.
No special house rules at this time, each scenario incorporates many of the individual house rules we are currently experiments with-such as no medics.

I am extremely interested in this event but I am taking public transportation from downtown chicago. I called the store for help when it comes to directions and I will be taking the 1st Metra train from down town, the problem is it arrives at the "golf stop" @ 9:05 Saturday morning. I was told a cab ride is a short 10 minutes away. This still makes me 15 minutes late.
My question is... how prompt will the tourney start? I am not asking for special favors but I am being realistic. Thank you for your time.

-The FreakyTiki,
Get on the blue line. Take it to Jeffereson Park. Get on the westbound Milwaukee Bus. It also stops at Golf Mill. The store is located near the next intersection North. I hope this helps. :)

A final note-for tonight (Friday) there will be three LEs (one for fellowship) plus the boosters in the prize pool, and one of the LEs is a hot one on the trade boards-although it is not another Bruce.
I hope to see many of you there this weekend, and I will try and post some results (depending on time), Greg.

Hello Heroes,
I just wanted to let you all know that:
1. I know you were asking about house rules for the games, but we do have some "Rules of Conduct" we ask everyone to abide by - it makes the day better for all. Check them out at http://www.pastimes.net/pastimesroc.htm
2. There will be plenty of diet coke in 20 oz bottles.
3. I want to let all you HC people out there know that you guys really seem to have it on the ball and I really hope to see tons of you out there. Hits to our site and to these boards is almost double that of MK or MW. I am a little suprised, but glad to see it. If you are going to be looking for singles, we will try to be stocked up and we are going to break a few cases today to make sure we have some of everything.
4. Looking forward to a great weekend!!!!
Thanks!

Any advice on the drive? I can't leave tonght till 4:05 or therabouts and that means hitting chicago at the peak of rush hour. Are I-94S and I-294 impossible at those times? Will I be able to make it from Milwaukee in time?
Thanks for any help,
M!

Alan -
Don't get too excited about the web hits; half of them may be me as I keep reminding myself of the team-building rules. ;)
M -
I *think* you can make it, but don't waste a minute.
No joke, things get dicey almost as soon as you cross the border. I used to make the trip regularly when my fiancee lived in Racine.
I leave Gurnee at 4:15 and traffic is usually backed up to Willow or even Lake-Cook by then; I'd assume it gets progressively worse from there.
So go for it, but don't spare the petrol!

Great start.....
Well, it is only Friday night, and the event we thought would be the slowest had just under 30 people!!!!!
If you were on the fence of whether to come or not - get off the fence and get over here tomorrow AM as the real madness begins tomorrow!!!
Hope to see you here!!!!
