What is the best way to create a grid for a new map?

If anyone could share thier success stories with me I would greatly appretiate it.

The best way I've found is that I did up an excel spreadsheet with 1 1/2 inch squared. I've designed the maps in excel then printed them on card stock (each map takes 20 pages). I then cut the borders off the pages and used a spray glue to attach them to posterboard. Finally I put contact paper over the top to keep the pages together and safer from scratching.
