Silver Surfer sped toward Thanos, whose raised arm bore the Infinity Gauntlet. On his board was Adam Warlock, geared to take the glove from the mad Titan.
He missed.
In his rage, Thanos turned from the heroes to attack Warlock and the Surfer. In that second, Spider-Man leapt up and pulled the gauntlet from Thanos's hand.
In an instant, Thanos and the others were gone. The hideous altar to Death was obliterated, and Peter Parker hovered above New York, a god among men.
"Don't worry. I'm going to right all those wrongs." he swore to himself. In an instant, every criminal was in a cell, everyone with an injury was healed, and the half of all life that Thanos had obliterated was destroyed.
Peter landed on a rooftop. Before him appeared Gwen Stacy. She embraced him immediately. "Oh Gwen, you don't know how long I've dreamed of something like this." Peter told her. Gwen's father was also restored to life. Then Uncle Ben. Then Peter's own parents.
Peter looked out over his city. "No more suffering, no more death." he promised.
Over the next few weeks, great powers of the universe tried to contact him. Peter sent them away. Noone grew sick, noone died. Anyone who plotted or planned a crime would be imprisoned. Peter was forging a Utopia.
It was Uncle Ben who finally came to his nephew. "You can't do this, Peter." he told the young man. "I'm supposed to be dead. Let me go back, son."
Peter shook his head. "Why would you say such a thing? You never have to die again! Noone does!"
Ben put a hand on his nephew's shoulder. "No man has a right to control the destinies of others. People live, people die, people move on to a better place. If I had never died, would you ever have become Spider-Man? Answer honestly."
Peter began to weep. He knew his uncle's words were true.
"Remember those words I told you long ago, son. With great power comes great responsibility. Do the right thing."
Uncle Ben disappeared. All the people he'd brought back did as well. People got sick, people died. Peter wept for a long time, but he knew the right thing had been done.
His last command was to send the Infinity Gauntlet into nothingness. It would never curse the world again. In the morning, he got up, had breakfast, and went on patrol.
And for the first time in weeks, he was truly at peace.
He missed.
