By the way I want to address this shi-t about making the next tournament closer to San Jose.

Are you people insane. We had to drive through LA. I'm from New york and trust me I know traffic all too well.

LA traffic more then makes up for any troubles you people had to go through to get there.

SB was a nice mutual spot for north and south.

Just don't take directions form Cat.

So is anybody up for another Cal Cup like event in say 6 months?

Mola Ram, Like I said you beat me fair and square you just can't ask me to like it.

I'll just have to build and play better next time and that's what the game is all about. Getting beaten is only worth it if you learn from your mistakes. Only time will tell.

Till next time. -T.

Cat got your tongue Cat?

What's with these one word retorts?

"Allah" "Bah" "Meh"

Is this some bostonian cryptic code? are you trying to say Alabama? Or Is it Allah's Bad Men?

Or perhaps these are just some more misunderstood navigationally challneged nuggets of nit-wisdom from the conundrum wrapped in an enigma dipped in a riddle and rolled in a Santa Barbarian mind trick that only you and your young male friends can understand.

Don't be a PITA you sanctimonious CLB (Creepy Lil' Bastard)

Well I was doing the one word retorts as you call them to keep it simple for the simple minded . . . I figued since you say I'm so bad at giving directions that I may as well just keep it to a minimum in the dialogue or else I might loose someone.

So with that being said.

Cat,

No one gets lost so long as there is no parking lot around you.

Besides in written text you are so much easier to understand over that marble mouthed / boston accent spewing that you do so well.

:P

you're a CLB all the way Cat.

By the way re-reading your explanation about how you think that had you put your name in at Outback it would have been a shorter wait ... I'm confused why are you arguing this point? It's exactly what I said.

The point was you had "not" put your name in thus making a 45 minute wait meaningless because it never went against the expected hour and a half wait time.

I think the south needs to have a "Southern Shootout" before we have the next cup. It will let everyone vent on the other players first.........

Next event for NorCal will be DundraCon, Presidents Day weekend in February. We may try a Clix Con in March or April, and move from there!

A fair and balanced recap of the California Cup:

The North demonstrated the rationale behind all the new rules by using cheesy teams and tactics that exploited the old rules (maybe WizKids had spies in San Jose, and that's how we got the new rules).

Shane lost due to the worst dice roles in the history of mankind (just like every time he loses - just ask him).

We discovered that, even while out drinking, the San Jose crew is unable to carry on a conversation that does not revolve around Hero Clix.

Everyone who took Cat's directions got lost.

muffinlad
10/22/2003, 02:50
Cheng,

It was a really awkward situation. No one from the North really knew anyone from the South, and small talk was not on their minds.

I think you would have seen a different side of them if you had hung out at SR with us......no one really talked about Clix.

~yawn~ I'm just glad that everyone had fun. Regardless of what people thought of my direction giving . . . even if the only people that got lost were in a freakin' Parking Lot, getting to the lot not a single person got lost.

So try to add the good with the bad instead of making me look like a fool.

ontapmedia, they were supposed to originally have my name on a list that I called in beforehand but they obviouslly didn't get that message correct, I did put my name on the list and then when I went back in they said that it would've been a shorter wait but meh! :p

cheng, meh! :p

Wrich, I thought your guys were a little quiet, but I understand I told Cheng that as well and he understood, that because they didn't know us they were sort of in reserve, people like ontap, cheng, myself and you are more extraverted and don't mind getting out there and talking.

Once we all started talking at the CalCup things mellowed out some more . . . heck I didn't have one bad thing to say to or about Billy . . . so that's good for me. :p

Well catch you all later.

Well, Cat, everyone owes you a debt of gratitude for dragging people out of their shells (in some direction....on one is sure which:knockedou ) and doing your best to make this a fun event.

Every one of the Northern players had a good time (or a nap), and the hordes of Texas had better fear the combined might of California.(haha).

Well, well, well, it seems that the CalCup has brought us all closer together (but I'm still waiting for my chance again Mola_Ram!). I have nothing but respect for the skill level of the northern players. It is refreshing to see the difference in team building between the regions. We never see rookie Aquaman or Storm(!) down here. I found it interesting to see that almost all of the northern guys and all of us OC (21st Century players) had some form of Hawk, Steel, and Taskmaster. I guess great minds do think alike, ha! Anyway, I would have to admit that overall, the northern players had the superior talent, but remember that our crew (Israel, Billy, Eric, and I) held our own and finished 9-3 as whole, so don't blame us (*cough* San Diego *cough*)! I had a great time playing the best in California and I would like to thank (and everyone should) RD for making this all happen. He put so much time, money, and effort into make this dream a reality. I just can't wait to get my Majestic custom!

Los O'Brien's, those were 2 good matches we played (1-1) so nothing was really settled.

Alan, I hate your GL team (though it was an awesome idea), but you are a great player. To Jay, sorry about Billy, he IS and ###, you'll have to pardon him (but he is the Fellowship winner, so you can't really argue, haha)

RichieRich, I wish I could have played you, I definitely wouldn't base your B/C/F character with my Firelord or attack with my Medic!

Mike, all I can say is, don't break away so often next time! Just shoot with Live Wire (he does 3 damage!).

Wrich, great job moderating the whole thing, but please, no more "secret ballot."

Unfortunately, we won't be able to go to Texas, but we are looking forward to DundraCon in February! Until next time guys, memorize those dials!

Thanks for all the hard work all. Hats off to RD who really dug into his pocket on this one. I think next time we do this, and we will, that the cost of admission should be higher. I didn't mind donating stuff but felt like I could have helped out alot more.
I loved the BINGO sign behind Wrich while he was bellowing out rules and such. Just kind of made a tear well up in my eye seeing that huge fella in front of a Bingo sign. LOL!
I had a fun time playing and I think I won one game over all. I loved the game that I rolled double one's 3 times. RichieRich was even crying for me. In his honor he didn't laugh or point once as I rolled 1's twice in a row with whirlwind and pushed the next turn and rolled them again. I had fun that game. There is something to be said about playing in a competition and seeing the critical turning point, and knowing that without a doubt that you lost so might as well have fun. It is liberating. I wanted to play some pick-up games after all was said and done but everyone was bailing so maybe we need to make it a two day thing next time. I judge more than I play now so it is nice to just roll dice and eat pretzels and drink large quantities of beer.
I will say that I was very impressed with the over all turnout of the south, and the north seemed to pull a few teams out more than I expected.
What was the overall Win/Loss ratio of the North, and of the South. Points do not tell the story. It is about wins vs Looses.
I did make it to OutBack after stoping for directions because...well we will leave his name out of it. Every direction I got from you XXX got me way lost....LOL! just ask my wife. My wife said it was nice meeting you all and she enjoyed SB. Till next CUP!

For the north people. Next Comic Con your all welcome to crash at my place for that weekend. I have 5 bedrooms and a huge living room and a furnished 2 car garage. Who ever wants to crash for free can drop a sleeping bag down and enjoy the hospitality. See you all soon.

mola ram
10/24/2003, 03:50
Well it seems that nothing was settled at all . . . or was it? The north won by over 6000 points, I think it is safe to say that we took the comic con without any help or any other accusations thrown against us. Hopefully, that was proven as all of us were at comic con unlike the Calcup. To those who are still skeptical, come out of your dream state.

Saying that, I did have a great time. Going in to the event, I (and the rest of Norcal) really only expected competition from the OC. As I played, I realized that I couldn't have been more right. Don't like that comment? See you at the next Calcup then!

How's that for starting a need for another Calcup? The rest of Socal needs to practice just to beat me, give or take some from the LA area! HAHAHA!

Anyways, Patrick, I'll admit, I don't really like the GL team either. I'll be more than happy to give you a third rematch as it was fun to play one of the best. As for rookie Aquaman, you're crazy not to use him, 27 points, 6 clicks of life, 3 damage, leadership and 10 attack on the first click. Storm is another issue . . .

I don't think Jay took anything Billy said seriously. Jay talks as much ####e as Billy does. It's all in good fun.

As for the best player in California, well, Joe O Brien beat all the OC people individually and only lost one match. I think, if anything, that needs to be settled. I never played Billy, so I can't make that claim, yet :)

All joking aside, Rd and the other delegates, thanks for putting on a great event. Thanks for the the tshirts and putting up with us players.

I hope we can all do this again in 6 months or so. Hope to see ya all at some other convention or the next calcup!

LOL Man, I shot with Live Wire... He missed. :) All I had left was stupid a$$ Hawkman's charge that turn, I thought if I could roll a 4 over and over with 2 dice I could do it with one. Hehe. The only person on my team who didn't attack was Steel but looking back it was better to use him that way... Protect the Superman Ally ability and have the same range/damage/attack from Live Wire. Had I not done that I probably wouldn't have gotten Robin and been left with however many points E Hawk is... Which I wouldn't know since the rookie is so much more effective. ;) Anyway, rolls aside I doubt I could have pulled off a win on that map with my team and your skill, but you must admit I certainly would've done better if I could've rolled well enough for frickin' Alfred to hit the Parademon Scout. LOL What did I need? 5? 6? That's pathetic. Not that I think you'd pushed it enough for the one click to finish him off... But maybe, had I been able to hit that I would've hit the OTHER rolls I needed earlier. lol

Like I said, in the end, I'd just like the chance to play you again win, lose or draw cause you were a lot of fun. Then agin maybe it was just comparing you to Billy. :p

Oh, and whoever suggested paying more money for the next Cal Cup... I say we all get together and just play in some public park. #%*& this admission garbage! lol Then we can add "First person to get cr_apped on by a bird!" to the very fun "Make An A$$ of Yourself" prizes.

mola ram, you took the words right out of my mouth.

the cal cup proved one thing that should have been blatantly obvious.

1) oc and san jose are extremely better than the rest of california.

it also proved that as of now, the oc is where the best players play in california. i know that stings san jose, but you're just going to have to live with it. until you get your re-match.

joe o'brien is a hellavu player, and he did only lose once. but he lost to a guy from the oc.

and ya, he did beat me. but go ahead and ask him just how close he came to losing. we'll play again joe. maybe in february.

Kublacon is great. I go every year as it was the local con for me when I lived in San Francisco. I recommend it to all my fellow southerners.

Andrew: there was a fair amount of Firelord, and the south played a lot of Ultron. Most of the north didn't use any Indy-clix figures, as most of us aren't going to play much Indy. Very few of the Indy figures stand out in an Amalgam setting, particularly under old rules. But a few of them were used to good effect. The best I saw personally was V Shi, who is a good balance between range and close.

No dupes limited the Con Artist cheese. Although it also pointed out how absurdly effective that character is. With dupes, you can play 3 R Con Artists for 33 points. That's awesome. But, with no dupes, R Con Artist and LE Sarah St. John for 30 points is still a terrific bargain.

The most interesting team to me was the GL team. In either straight DC or Amalgam, the GL team was quite vicious. There were many teams that simply could not deal well with it, as their taxis would be picked off one at a time.

Although I have played it many times, that is one team I am glad to say good riddance to. The 81 pt Green Lantern is not a problem, but I think it's ridiculous that 44 points can get you two R Livewires that can also carry the whole team. 125 points for 3 taxis that can carry 3 other figures halfway across the board *and* back is lame. Of course, this could have been fixed with one simple rule, No Taxi After Taxi. Instead we got No Action After Taxi and Flyers Can't Carry Flyers. Overkill.

The GL team is one example of what many people hated about the old rules. But I stand by my opinion that playing the new rules would have been worse. Any guess on the number of Jean Greys and Nightcrawlers we would have seen? I really believe Jean Grey or Mandroid will have to be on nearly every Marvel team. Oh well, I guess we'll wait until next time to find out.

-Joe O'Brien

10/29/2003, 15:47
I agree with the NAAT and flyers carrying flyers being overkill, but that's another thread altogether. As for the GL teams, I'm surprised none of us southerners used it, I mean that would have been the logical thing to do, given it's effectiveness. BUT, I do recall Billy beating 2 GL teams (albeit the same one), annihilating Jay's Amalgam team with a DC ONLY team! Anyway, as for GenCon SoCal, the reason why there won't be any Heroclix there is because the lone Level 4 Judge is Wrich, and I believe that he lives in the nothern part, so that's why they have so many ClixCons and we don't. He has the clout to pull something of that magnitude. If nobody plays down here in SoCal and Billy and I just won the CalCup against the best of California, imagine how good we'd be if we DID play 5-6 times a week instead of once a week. Think about that.

-Patrick

Well, well, well,
Let the smack talk commence. Billy and Patric do not come to SD that often and the score card with me is pretty even. I am more than sure if they could show up once a week that they would find themselves on the loosing side of the score card with SD players. They are good players; better then anyone I played from the north, but not better than the best of SD.

I'll state the obvious about the CalCup. Northern players are slow players and play stall tactics. Every team I played from the north spent 5 to 10 minutes for each round of play. Heck the first game I played that morning was a 4 round game. In a tournament that is time based, one side or the other should be destroyed. I really like playing games where the only action a player has is clearing their figures and that takes 5 minutes, or better yet all figures are pushed except one and it take 5 minutes to figure out what they are going to do with that one figure.....lol. I saw that happen more than once.

All that said, you can't beat the dice. there is just no amount of playing you can do to over come bad dice luck. I have seen the best dice rolls win a game for a terrible player and the worst dice KO the best player.

CalCup was very cool and if you missed it I think you should go out of your way to attend the next one.

Isn't GenCon SoCal the same week as the Critical Mass Marquee? That is going to be tough to pull HeroClixers away from, as there are so many good figs coming out in the next set.

However, if any of you So.Cal. judges would like to run at GenCon West, I wonder if they are still looking for volunteers.....hmmm, I will have to check that out.

LOL. What a delusional take on it all. I seem to recall playing a certain SD player that on his 5th turn had moved all of his flyers and about 2/3 of his team to the back row. Meanwhile, this player's partner was camping on the DC Indoor desk with his team surrounding Invisible Girl.

At any rate, the best of the players that showed up were definitely from SJ and OC. Billy and Patrick are very good and they'd be mixing it up around the top of the heap up here in SJ.

However, I do think OC is getting a bit out of control with their impressions of Cal Cup. Billy was 5-1. Patrick was 3-3. Both lost to my brother and they weren't close. Alan was 5-1. Richard was 4-0. I was 4-2. My brother was 4-2. B&P happened to win the second game against me and my brother which for some reason is the only one that mattered between us. We went 4-0 and all that got us was a chance to continue playing without any recognition for going 4-0. We beat OC's two best teams. Then we lost to one and didn't try very hard against the other since it didn't matter at that point. I'd say at best, OC has proven they're equals to SJ.

At any rate, I hope to see B&P up at Kublacon. You too Andrew. I didn't get a chance to play you last year and I'd like the opportunity. And don't listen to billy/sanjoserulz/iloveme/andrewdavidson. He's more talk than bite. :)

why has someone gone to the trouble of using his name as thier own when it would seem Andrew Davidson is warden?

That seems a little creepy don't it?

Was someone else giving directions besides Cat?

Where was that person during the Cal Cup?

Lost in a Parking Lot perhaps?

I'm still recovering from the indestructible undigestible rice of Cat's dinner pick China City.

There's a reason Cat does not write for Zagat's. Direction are only half the problem.

I should have taken more of a mental note of the fact that he brought us to eating establishments and never had a bite himself.

Hmmmm ...... very un-interesting!!!

What a bunch of Suckas we are.

Now seriously without having done a google search because without offense it's just not worth "all that trouble" who is Andrew Davidson?

Is he the greatest clix player alive?

I must know!!!! but there's really no rush in fact if I never find out I'm pretty sure I will live a short and pitiful life in that I was at least made fun of by Richie Rich. I mean really what more is there? What more could I possibly want?

Well besides cheating at an Indy Marquee and almost getting away with it too. If not for that meddling Agent of SEAL Shane Priddy!!!!

(It really doesn't ring like Nick Fury does it?) "sigh"

My Marquee plans were dashed by this weekends unplanned "burning man" festival here in San Diego.

(no offense to anyone hurt or affected by these tragic and sad events. Just venting in a non-productive way as usual.)

As usual my priorities and setimentalities are well organized.

Well Happy Halloween to andrew Davidson and everyone else.

The French have decided they won't celebrate Halloween anymore ain't that just plain crazy.

They say it is an offensive holiday and that it takes away meaning from the deaths of Saints.

Take it from Mr. St John.

Halloween is my favorite holiday. The French are just so wacky.

Later,
T.

Andrew Davidson was the one-time UK Champ, a frequent player at KublaCon (Actually, we sat beside each other the first time playing in the "big tourney" oh so many years ago.....must have been late 50's), and has his picture on a Deadlands playing card. He also harbors the ambitions of re-capturing the colonies, and will stop at nothing to crush the decendents of the founding fathers in Hero Clix battles.....

Ok, not all of that is true...but most of it is.

Thanks to everyone for the praises regarding the CalCup. I had a great time organizing, but quite honestly it took me out of my game (apologies to Terrence and Ryan).

I am currently working on the recap (Took a little break to catch my breath) and will post it on the web site this week.

My personal thanks to everyone that took the time to show up in SB and a special thanks to the delegates who all contributed to this events success.

Keep on Clixin'

HaHa!

I'm still recovering from the indestructible undigestible rice of Cat's dinner pick China City.

That wasn't my pick, it's what the majority picked because it was quicker because they were getting ready to head back to their neck of the woods.

There's a reason Cat does not write for Zagat's. Direction are only half the problem.

I reiterate, HaHa . . . your so freakin' funny.

I should have taken more of a mental note of the fact that he brought us to eating establishments and never had a bite himself.

Again, not my choice, and I don't eat after a certain time because I am trying to stay on my diet and get rid of some of the extra weight that I have. I thought that I explained that to you the first night when we met at the Elephant Bar.

Hmmmm ...... very un-interesting!!!

Yup!

And that's that,

Cat, you sound so bitter! You did host an excellent event.

Cat,

I am a smart ###. Or a dumb ### if you will.

I still think half the value of our relationship is my ability to upstage you. You are Daffy Duck to my Bugs Bunny.

Again I jest.

Why did you address this months after the fact?

Was this another cry for help?

I agree with Cheng as I find myself doing often, (something must be done about this. :P ) You hosted a great event.

RD still rules. I hope that we may do this again some day.

Yes, with the number of formats next year, perhaps we can all put together the "regional" championship for the 3rd quarter of next year?

I don't want RD to be responsible for having to spend so much of his own time/money though! (He really kicks butt!) We should make sure that no one squawks at $20 bucks next time, and see if we can make the event over two days.

I have no problem with paying $20.00 and yes RD you did an absolute 100% awesome job . . . I mean you really kicked but.

ontapmedia, I am addressing it because it was the first time that I saw it . . . I stopped coming to the thread because it was over and done with . . . but then I saw that so I had to put my points in there.

I don't cry for help, I ask if I need it, if I don't then I keep my mouth shut.

Cheng, I didn't host the event, I just found us a place to play, RD did most of the work, he did a great job, but that's already been said several times. And again, if I sound bitter, then I'm sorry . . . somethings just get old after a while.

Enjoy!

Oh, and Wrich, I will be at KublaCon in February, which I believe is when you said it was . . . so I am planning on heading up that way to be there.

DundraCon is in February, presidents weekend. It will have a good selection of HeroClix events, and should draw 20-30 players at the very lease.

KublaCon is in May (Memorial Day Weekend) and it will have a HUGE Clix turn out (50+), with players from all over the World.

BTW, all Cal Cup players.....NorCal is heading to Reno-
About 6-8 of us are going.

This was posted online-

Hey all you Heroclix players. Plan to be in Reno on 1/31 & 2/1.

Please look under Games Galore in Reno NV. The last week end in January 2004 We are holding a 2 day long heroclix event. The venue will be giving us special prizes to give away each day valued at $19.95 each. You can guess which over-sized figure that will be. As well as Prize support from wizkids. And the judges will be throwing in some cool prizes as well.

Saturday will be a day of Gladiator wars (rules will be available in the store soon)

Sunday you will get to gang up on the judges, Lordplunder and Thecrazyone.
As well as a 450 point constructed game.

A $5.00 entry fee will be charged for each day. (that gets you in all games that day.)
