View Full Version : defying the odds
Thought this might be an interesting topic for discussion. What have you done/seen done that defy the odds and seem practically impossible?
A few come to mind for me:
-I once pulled Green Goblin out of 2 Xplosion boosters in a row
-I played a battle royale style game and between two seperate opponents, they made all 7 of their super senses rolls that game. 7 in a row, that was pretty friggin crazy. No PC either.
-I've seen a guy roll snake eyes twice in a row with his medic on a healing attempt. Poor guy criticalled right off his healing clicks. It was hilarious because he rolled snake eyes at least 1 or 2 other times during the game as well, we were all laughing.
-I've seen a figure roll a critical miss, and come back the next turn with a critical hit.
-My buddy once was rolling off for fellowship, it was him and another guy. He rolled boxcars! Yeah, fellowship is his! Nope. Other dude rolls boxcars too, and follows it up with a 10 while my buddy rolled like a 6 the 2nd time. Ouch, that had to hurt.
-same tournament, best game I've ever rolled. My opponent should have crushed me, but he missed ALL his rolls and I hit ALL of mine. Result? I go 2-1, thus disqualifying me from fellowship roll, he goes 1-2 and wins the fellowship with the above mentioned rolls. It was a marquee too. Doh!
-on the first day of collecting, a buddy of mine went hogwild and bought 18 boosters, various sets from various stores. Pulled 0 U's. Bought another 17 the next day, and opened about 10 of them before FINALLY pulling his first Unique, a Mr Fixit. His first 20 some boosters he was without a U, that would blow.

I've seen one guy pull a Green Goblin U, but inside the plastic the U came in, there was another Green Goblin dial.
1) There are 2 stores in our area where we can buy Clix from. My buddy and I only go there occasionally (oddly enough) because it isn't as fun. But whenever we do go we always buy at least one pack. No matter how many packs we buy there 1 or 20 we each get one unique (And our streak has continued through every expansion set).
2) I watched two of my friends playing a house game in or house league tournament. Any way, through a string of critical misses for one side and critical hits for the other side. V Bane was able to close a long distance on V Ultron and bring him down.
3) In fact that was just one instance of what we refer to as the curse of Ultron in our house. Whoever, plays Ultron in our house games, never rolls a critical hit and will always roll at least one critical miss at an extremly inopurtune time. There are several hucked dice in my backyard because of this.
4) I was playing in the Xplosion marquee and needed to roll a 5 or higher to make a decisive attack to give myself the edge over ABomb. I rolled a 4. No problem I had Destiny for the re-roll. I re-rolled it and got a 2. It just got worse from there. Ya just have to laugh, because as we say "Luck has odds."

At the end of a game once, all I had left was a Veteran Cop on his last click and a Veteran Steel on, I believe, his 2nd click. My opponent still had a Veteran Nightwing and a full Veteran Flash. My opponent waps Steel with Nightwing and drops Steel to his 4th click. Flash then tries to run up and HyperSonic the Cop, but misses. My opponent decides to just leave Flash next to my Cop. I could shoot Flash with Steel, but I'd need a 9. The Cop is no better off. I say "Well, he's is toast anyway. I guess he'll just try for the critical hit." BAM! Critical Hit! My opponent fails the Super Senses roll and Flash takes two clicks of damage. After that, Steel went to town and I won.
I was just amazed at the timing. I almost never roll critical hits, but finally got one when I most needed it! (Come to think of it: This is the first time I've seen a failed total succeed. Gotham Cop's attack is 4, and plus 12 is 16. Flash's defense is 17!)

I was at GenCon and was playing in a CT Battle Royal, the ones where they changed the rules so that each side was a team.
I opened my booster first and pulled a U Spiral, R Invisible Girl, Vet Mandroid armor, and E Blob.
I had a feeling I wasn't going to win, so I kept Spiral and passed the rest.
I joked to my partner about keeping the mandroid to TK me around, and he did, so we passed an 18 defense to our opponents, woops.
He opened his booster, U Fix-it, V Thing, another exp Blob, and a rookie mandroid, which I got.
We both pulled U's we really wanted which was cool, but both our opponents pulled V Thors.
So their team had: E Blob, V Thing, V Thor, and another fig.
And: V Thor, R Invisible Girl, E Wasp or Yellowjacket and another decent fig.
The objective was to kill off one person to advance.
My partner starts dealing with the Thor/Thing duo and I run Spiral over to help. My partner is getting blasted, and his fixit and a stealth character were based by thing. So I got over there and based Thing as well. My turn comes up and I roll my first flurry attack on Thing. Critical miss. I get pushed off my BCF click, and am about to call it a wash when the judge says I might as well finish my flurry. I needed a critical hit to even damage Thing, and darned if I didn't get it. The whole group let out a cheer, and everyone was pretty glad I made the roll, since we were getting thrashed.
We lost the match and our opponents were 1st and 2nd in the next game, with one of them using one move to KO the last of their opponents, and the other to use a running shot from one Thor to the next.
It was a pretty interesting game, even though it was pretty lopsided.

just last week, one of the guys i play with had a really annoying probability control/super senses team, but he still rolled snake eye's 4 times in a row on a healing attempt. that game went horrible for that guy anyway, every time he needed a 4 or 5 to hit he rolled a 3, and there were so many snipers running around he could never get his probability controllers where he needed them.

- In my first marquee, I took 9 shots at my opponent's Cheetah. 3 of them missed; on the other 6, he rolled 6 super senses in a row. IN A ROW! He didn't miss a single SS roll. Needless to say, I did not win.
- At the same marquee, my friend pulled a cosmic boy that had a twin! It had one base and two figures. He keeps them in his box in an erotic homosexual hugging position.
- My friend once accidentally said "you rolled a clitoral miss!"
One time I was attacking, needed like a 4 to hit, and I rolled a critical miss. Black Cat was in range, so I rerolled...and got another critical miss!

So, is the obverse "hit" putting one "right on the button?"
And how many clicks does the "little man in the boat" have, anyway? What powers (Mind Control, for sure)?

In my first CJ booster, I pulled Vampire Bats. However, most other times my luck for pulling figures that are cool isn't that good.
By the way, what state is that store in, Ice Hot? I want to get some Uniques  . Of course, with my luck no one would ever pull a unique from there ever again.:ermm:

Energy explosion perhaps, on good days...
Perplex on bad days...

I played several battle royales at gen con. I'm pretty new to the game, but had pretty good luck getting good teams. In my last Cosmic Justice BR, I pull the Superman! I think I'm in like Flynn. My teammate pulls a Despero. WE obviously smoke our opponents, but Despero kills me in the end, and i miss out on Ollie Queen. I finally got the luck, but still no love. Not that I'm complaining though, I ended up with two LEs and the U in that game. What luck!

Heh... I've done the exact same thing.
In the CJ tourney I was running this weekend, we had a vote to decide who got fellowship. Two guys tied, so they rolled off. Both rolled 4's. Roll again... both roll 6's. Third roll finally decided it.

in another game....i had v logan and several other figs.....i failed 5 regeneration rolls...5 can you believe it. my opponent was very sympathetic. i took 2nd in the tourney...because of my failed reg...my oppanent took 1st.
i had him on the ropes.....but lady luck is fickle.

I had a set of Bicycle brand dice that had become my "1 under a hit roll" dice that I was ready to throw away. A friend of mine wanted to take them so I gave them him and he's won a prize in 4 straight tournaments (3 wins, 1 fellowship).
Maybe there's a cosmological equation for this?!?! Hmm...
One time I was playing with a friend who was using 400 pts of X-men to slap around my Vision, Kang, Wasp, and Abomination (a #### team I was playing just for the hell of it) and he killed Abom, Kang was on his last click, and Vision was about halfway down. After that I rolled 3 criticals, knocking 2 of his guys off the building to finish them. He missed all his rolls for the rest of the game and I managed to squeak by for a win. I've always been a firm proponent of "You never know what can happen."
Sure enough, I got mine the next week...I was playing Amazo with a bunch of Intergang Agents against some Mind Control/Legion team with various other people in for team abilities (like Mad Hatter, Robin, Circe, etc.). So I'm kicking azz and taking names, Amazo's only damage came from a push. My opponent wants to concede as all he has left is a Cheetah, Cosmic Boy, Robin, and beat-up Saturn Girl. Amazo was carrying around a dumpster and primed to take another figure out of the game, but I always play it out, just to see what happens. Right after I make him continue I roll snake eyes with Amazo, and Cheetah smacks Amazo with a 6 on the BCF roll...naturally I miss the Impervious roll. The next attack I made with Amazo missed, Cheetah hit again, and it was game over. I couldn't believe it. So always play it out. Unless you're winning. Just kidding, but I'm so happy it wasn't a tournament final or something.
"One time I was attacking, needed like a 4 to hit, and I rolled a critical miss. Black Cat was in range, so I rerolled...and got another critical miss!"
I did this exact same thing tonight, only I think I needed a 5. Either way, rolled critical misses both times.
I won the tournament tonight, but it was weird, all 3 of my opponents rolled horrible, and I rolled great. I hit almost all of my super senses rolls and I had 3 or 4 of them on my team.
In the 2nd game my opponent rolled the worst I've ever seen in a game, THE WORST. He rolled critical misses a couple times. He very rarely hit, and if he did, either I'd make my super senses roll, or Black Cat would make him reroll and he'd miss.
The funniest roll I've ever seen happened to him after he was already rolling terribly and we were joking about how it can't get any worse...he rolls, one of the dice lands on a 1, the other one lands on a 4...he only need a 4 to make his healing roll. BUT, the 4 slid for a good second, and hit a ridge where the map creases, bumped over it, and switched to a 2! It was hilarious, it was on the 4 for quite awhile, long enough we both clearly knew he made his roll and all of a sudden it gives a little jump and misses. Poor guy.
His time was due though, he won both marquees over the weekend.
PS, I let him keep the 4 out of sheer pity. We both saw it long enough, I just said keep it.

This past weekend I played in 3 Marquees - going 2-7. Why - partly because of the worst rolls...ever!
On Friday I played a fairly competitive game. Still went 1-2 - but that was okay. Now I'm psyched for Saturday. Sat rolls around - 0-3. I manage to roll 5 critical misses that day - 3 when I was pushing. Vet WW, Vet Cheetah, E Saturn Girl, R Cosmic Boy - and they did nothing. Wiped out each time and I killed a total of about 123 points of figs in 3 games.
Sunday rolls around - I'm thinking, okay I got the bad rolls off of me. First game I do pretty well - mostly benfiting from my opponents mistakes. Next game:
Perplex V Cheetah's attack to 12, Charge E Wonder Woman - hit. Damage: 3. Okay, I knocked her off Impervious and tied down his V Zatanna and E Wonder Woman. My plan next turn, V Saturn Girl to mind control WW to push her to attack with CCE V Zatanna and take Mystic Damage. Visions of 2 and 0 dance in my head. My opponent rolls: WW Critical hits Cheetah - 6 damage. His R Firstorm targets my Saturn girl - Bam! 4 damage and knockback ko's her. Zatanna finishes off Cheetah. I end up losing by 25 points.
Okay, game 3. The kid is 0-2. Okay - maybe I can at least get a winning record. V Cheetah attacks his Firestorm. I hit him 3 times in a row. What do I roll on Blades/Claws? a 1 three times in a row. After my Firestorm rolls a crit miss on a push, I end up losing by 8 points.
Worst Marquee...ever!
I bought 3 IC boosters and got a U wolverine and a U xavier. So I went back and bought 3 more the next day and got a U spiderman. That's the best I've ever done
I also had nightcrawler roll 3 critcal misses in one game.

Super skrull in a sealed makes eight skrull rolls in three games!!!
Offer to re-roll a die that is in the crack between two tables, opponent says if you want, (would have been a hit) need a 2 or better to KO Despero, re-roll, get a 1!!!!!! (Despero then gets to the medic and time runs out!!!)
Guy at my venue pulls two Savage hulks in the Xplosion marquee, and then gets fellowship (as if 2 Uniques weren't enough, but he really did deserve the LE)
My Cosmic Justice marquee pull had 3 fliers (yes, only 3)!!
In same CJ marquee, E Penquin on his last click (w/perplex) manages to hit and KO E Starfire in the last twenty seconds of the game (unfortunately not near enough points for an LE)
funny, my R Penguin was my Marquee MVP. He had 3 or 4 clutch hits, beleive it or not. One of them perplexed up, critical hit, while stealing the attack value of a wild card.

Charging in with V Rogue, while she was carrying E Sabretooth. I rolled a Crit Hit with her, then on the follow up attack (Dr. Strange was up against the wall)I rolled a Crit Hit again, and then rolled a 6 on B/C/F. Dr Strange= Mudd! :)
Also, I recently played a game where I healed Domm up to full strength 3 times in a row w/o PC.
I was playing a game and was down to V Destiny. She had been based by Taskmaster, and successfully rolled for Super Senses to avoid his BCF. She goes to counterattack, and gets boxcars! Unfortunately, she was in sight of another Destiny, who forces the reroll. I only get a 10. But wait! I still have my own reroll, and I’m gonna take it! I scoop of the dice, shake ‘em up, and let ‘em fly. BOXCARS AGAIN! Taskmaster takes one click and knockback from the 80-year-old blind woman.

I got three critical misses in one turn once... with Mojo, Livewire and Deathbird. I have never used the first two since, and I traded Deathbird.

Playing in the CJ marquee I had pulled an e Cheeta and in the 4 games I only rolled over her base damage once. I was cursing the dice gods that day.
