Hello All,

Everyone said that they needed more notice for the next WizKids Weekend - Midwest Regional Championship - so here it is!!! The majority of details will come in the next week or so, but now you will know the dates (if you haven't started to hear the buzz already!!).

Mark your calendars for September 12-14th. Plan to be at Pastimes (www.pastimes.net), just north of Chicago.

Just as in May, there will incredible tournaments, tons of fun - and of course, huge prizes!!!!!

No lame excuses this time - be there for your store, your state - be there because you think you actually have a chance to win!!!!!

Please feel free to post questions here, we will try and answer them as quickly as possible. Like the last Midwest event, there are three days of heroclix games (also mageknight and mechwarrior) and there is a combination of sealed and constructed events.

Hi,
Would youplese repost the rules for the Senarios? Is the "Surprise" an Indy Clix Tourney? Do you have anyone to run Crimson Skies, Creepy Freaks or Shadow Run?

Pastimes
08/18/2003, 12:09
We do not have anyone to run Crimson Skies or Creepy Freaks at this level at this time.

If you are interested, please contact alan@Pastimes.net

Thanks,

Alan

To help clarify, we do have two judges who have been taught the rules to creepy freaks, and several demo kits. those judges are committed to helping run the heroclix and mageknight events. If there is time, they (I being one of them) could certainly be convinced to demonstrate a game. It is fast, easy to learn, and a lot of fun.

Oops.... my bad.

Sorry about that Greg, you guys did mention that you would be there to demo CF. I thought the question posted was more in line with having someone run tournament level play (a judge). I think we will have Creepy Freaks and perhaps Crimson Skies at the Winter Championships.

Again, there will certainly be time for the Freaks!!! at this event in September.

Surprise is a DC Heroclix scenario; as for the scenario rules, the info page at www.pastimes.net should have those. Thanks for your interest.

All of the prizes and the information concerning the actual events have now all been posted on the www.pastimes.net website. For heroclix alone, 32 LEs will be awarded, including 7 never before offered Indyclix LEs!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello All,

We are looking forward to a tremoundous time at the WizKids Weekend - Midwest Championships Fall 2003.

WizKids has really come up with some exceptional prize support - in addition to the flurry of Boosters we are going to be putting into the prize pool.

I have had a few call from people asking how many people we expect - and though we can guess, it would be great if you guys can chime in if/when you know you will be coming!

We hope people will get others from their area / stores to come in force - heck even form teams (i.e. Team Pastimes) to support their store or state. Last time we had people in from Missouri, Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan and, oh yeah -Illinois.

Where are you coming in from?

If you have any questions about the event, be sure to post them here. We will try to answer asap.

Hope to see you here.

Okay, guys, you knew I'd pipe up eventually...

Questions away!

* GENERAL *

What is your policy regarding Adventure Kit items?

* DC Battle Royal *

Is this a "Battle Royale" as per Wizard World? If so...

1) Will we use all eight figures?
2) Will we be using the Barrier sytem?
3) Will there be partners?

Whether it is or isn't, it may help to clarify the terms.

* Marvel 200 Point Rookie Cloud Tournament *

You do not state that no duplicates are allowed. I'd assume this was an intentional oversight, but know that in the final round last May you announced the rule on-site but not on the web. Can you confirm?

* Book of Sins *

You state that all maps are considered indoor maps. How will this affect rooftop combat? Are the buildings now one big chunk of blocking terrain?

It may prove more clear to simply say that flyers cannot use the Soaring ability in this battle.

That's it for now, but with me you never know...

Knew I'd think of more.

* Marvel 200 Point Rookie Cloud Tournament *

Do you have to take all your hero actions before your villain team (or vice versa), or can you mix them up?
(For example... Captain America makes his Leadership roll and attacks. Then Toad moves. Then Human Torch attacks. Then Blob attacks.)

Regarding the abilty to tear a hole in the cloud, you state: "That character must use an action token and then role a three or higher on its b/c/f role to create a hole in the targeted hex." Leaving side that these are squares (:)), does this mean that they must make an Attack roll of three or higher, or a Damage roll?

Regarding powers heroes and villains can share, you state: "Specifically, this only covers flying/carrying, healing, copying team abilities by wildcards, probability control and all enhancement abilities." Does Perplex count as an "enhancement ability?" If so, what about Perplex to reduce an opponent's Defense?

Along the same lines... if a villain were to use Outwit and remove an opponent's power, could a hero take advantage of that?

Finally, could you clarify the setup rules? Just how far apart do the hero and villain teams need to be?

That's really funny, Raven.... you asked all the questions I was going to if I wasn't so lazy...

Gregor Bond

Answers to Ravens questions:

you can alternate good guys, bad guys, they do not have to go all in a row.

the 3 roll is a damage role, no to hit roll is needed.

yes, perplex counts as an enhancement ability whether you are raising or lowering a stat.

yes, on the outwit question. Once an ability is outwitted, it is not in effect for anyone.

regarding set up, the heroes start 4 squares in from one edge, the villians start four squares in fro the other edge.
xxxxstart.................startXXXX

this time for the cloud scenario you may use duplicate figues.

battle royal variant-all figs drafted are used, no barrier-but no survival points, you start each round with all 8 of your figs at full strenght, no teams/partners.

Gotta run, I hope this helps, greg.

Just making sure I got this straight:

Mystique drops the opposing Captain America's Defense to 15.

If Colossus then attacks Cap, his Defense is back to 16?

RavenProject

I'm still not clear on the starting area for the cloud.

Suppose this is your two edge rows.

X X X X O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O X X X X
X X X X O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O X X X X

Are the X squares your starting area?

If not, then the question remains of just how far in we may place characters. Would it be divided like this?

X X X X H H H H H H H H V V V V V V V V X X X X
X X X X H H H H H H H H V V V V V V V V X X X X

Thanks!

So Perplex is pointless, basically? I use Mystique to perplex down Captain America's defense, then Mystique makes an attack against Captain America and misses. My Storm can't attack Captain America at all, or the Perplex just isn't in effect anymore? I think the Perplex should stay in effect: Mystique confused Cap for her own reasons, and as a result, Cap wasn't expecting Storm's attack. The Perplex rule should at least be consistant with the Outwit rule. It doesn't make sense that one power would work, but the other wouldn't.

I have 2 questions about the scenarios,Greg. In the all rookie 200 pt. Marvel game, do all the figures have to be the same TA? In the 300 pt Marvel game, if a figure triggers a trap they take 3 damage and the trap deactivates when it steps off. What if the character has less than 3 points and can't step off? Has the trap been deactivated? Can I use bystander tokens off set off the traps? I know this is not your intent, but someone is going to try to do it.

See you Saturday.

Gregor Bond
09/11/2003, 00:05
Ravenproject, I am sorry confused you but that is not correct-perplex lasts throughout your teams entire turn.

this diagram is only accurate if you have 18 heroes and 18 villians
X X X X H H H H H H H H V V V V V V V V X X X X
X X X X H H H H H H H H V V V V V V V V X X X X
think of it this way instead if you have 4 H and 4V
X X X X H H ------------- ------------- V V X X X X
X X X X H H ------------- --------------V V X X X X
Please start next to the x's and work your way into the center.

Book of sins-rooftops count as the equivalent of the balcony in the museum map!

Batfink-all your heroes or villians do not have to be on the same team, just on a good team. So you could combine a r Rogue and a R hydra agent on one team. Marvel 300 - traps only trigger once, and bystander tokes are not allowed in this event.

REmy, in your example storm can still attack and take advantage of the perplex.

How do you handle the balcony on the DC Premier Indoor map?

With the cloud senario, can you mind control someone to fall through a hole or off the edge?

Ikazuchimaru
09/11/2003, 02:25
Hi folks. I'm one of the judges at Pastimes in Niles, where they're holding the Midwest Regionals. Greg is going to have spotty computer access over the next few days so I'll be filling in and trying to answer questions as best I can.

Sithspawn: According to the scenario designer, you CAN Mind Control an enemy figure and make him walk over the edge of the map or into a hole in the cloud.

Ravenproject: AFAIK, we've been treating the museum balcony (I'm assuming that's the DC Premier Indoor Map, as I don't own a DC Premiere Set myself but have played on that map numerous times) as indoor elevated terrain. You're probably right that it would have been clearer for the rules to have barred flying figures from using Soaring. We'll keep that in mind for next time. :classic:

That's it for now. Hope to see you all over the weekend!

I both love and hate that map. Problem is that there's no such thing as "elevated indoor terrain."

Anyway, still more questions on the Book of Sins.

Is it possible for a character to Charge the Book? If so, would Damage be assessed before or after the attack?

How will the Trap and Book squares be affected (before and after cleraing) if a wall runs through them? (i.e. the monitor womb on the JLA Watchtower map)

Since the trap squares are defined as Clear Terrain, can a Barrier be placed on them?

Is holding the book the same as holding an object for Taxi purposes?

Thanks again!

Does anyone need a lift from Golf Mill or off the Blue Line?

RavenProject
09/11/2003, 12:59
One more for the Book of Sins.

Since there's an even number of rows on the map, how will it be decided which of the four center squares contains the Book?

(Wacky suggestion: Eliminate one row on each axis. To standardize, you could say it's the rows which intersect at the corner containing the map information.)

Ravenproject:

Yeah, I know that there isn't any such thing as Indoor Elevated Terrain, but the dang museum balcony and the Batcave vehicle platform just make everything so confusing. :classic: Additionally, when the scenario was written, we didn't want to lose the utility of half of the maps that people might bring to the Weekend (and thanks heaps for bringing yours to the last one).

In any case, your questions:

1) Yes, it's possible to Charge the Book. However, trap damage is assessed BEFORE the actual attack on the Book is resolved. We decided to make trap activation a single, discrete event during the player turn, mostly to avoid the situation where players might get knocked through three trap squares and take 9 damage before any reductions (now, it's 3 points, 3 points, 3 points with reductions applying each and every time), but it applies to Charge as well.

2) When you say "through" I assume you mean that the wall cuts through the center of the square instead of just running along the edge of it (I haven't played on the Watchtower map yet, or even seen anyone play on it, so I can't speak authoritatively). In such cases, treat the wall as if it wasn't there, both before and after the trap has been triggered or the Book has been picked up.

3) Yes, you may place a Barrier on the trap squares.

4) Yes, having the Book counts as having an object in your possession, except that you may NOT be taxied under any circumstances (even Telekinesis), or taxi anyone (even with Super Strength).

5) Book Placement: Good suggestion. We'll consider using it for the event itself. FYI, the way we handled it during playtest was to place the Book one square closer toward the starting zone of the player who won the die roll to pick the map ("first" player or the one who won initiative). But again, your suggestion might be better.

That's it for now. Hope this helps.

Ikazuchimaru
09/11/2003, 17:24
Whoops! Forgot to mention the fact that - while having the Book in your possession counts as carrying an object - it does NOT prevent you from moving or attacking normally with your full array of powers and abilities. You can make Ranged Combat actions with RCE (if you have it, of course), use BCF in Close Combat, etc. You cannot, however, use the Book as a regular object (to add to Close Combat damage or throw it for a Ranged Attack), since you can't put it down once you've picked it up.

Hi batfink. Pastimes should be making an official list public very soon with all the winners of individual events as well as the overall champions. Of course, the winners themselves may well post on their own, so you'll probably get some names sooner rather than later.

On a more general note, I'd like to once again thank all the players (From 7 states!) who showed up over the course of the Weekend and made the event such a success. We couldn't have done it without you!

Special Mentions (in no particular order):
RavenProject - for his generosity in lending us his laminated maps for use during the tournament, as well as his insightful questions and comments

Blaze890 - for helping out as a Judge when we needed it

SithSpawn (and family) - for coming all the way from Nebraska to play (You folks rock!)

Iceman243 - for his insightful questions and commentary

Pastimes - for being such a great venue

What kind of force list? The top 4 players were determined by their best of 6 events- 3 sealed and 3 constructed. There were different top 4 players in each event. Do you want a force list of the top 4 players for each of the 6 events?

Hello All,

Huge thanks to all who came to the Fall 2003 WizKids Weekend Midwest Championships. I think everyone had a blast. Special thanks to all the judges - they really make the weekend happen!!

Anyway, to answer a few issues.

1st - Places, Prizes and Photos are posted at www.pastimes.net - please check them out. I will try to post more as I can.

2nd - It was the best out of 3 of the six events - one had to be sealed. You can still see the events posted on the site.

3rd - Look for announcements soon about future Regional tournaments - both in the Midwest and other places - soon!!!

Again, thanks to everyone - hope to see you in a few months - get some rest, you'll need it!!!!!

I have a question:

If it was the best 3 of the 6 events (and 1 had to be sealed), how could someone who placed in the top 4 for 3 events (including 1 sealed) be beat for first place by someone who only placed in the top 4 in 1 event? It must be that fancy 'new math' I hear so much about.

The Pastimes info is a tad screwed up. The winner's picture is correct, but his name is Arnold Arellano. His best 3 were 1st, 3rd, and 5th place and he just edged out my 3rd, 3rd, and 4th place finishes by 79 points. Rats!
