I looked through a couple of these posts thinking it was going to be about Pirate books or Pirate movie discussions, I was wrong. So, can I interject some discussion?

Who here saw 'Pirates of the Carribean' that show was so awesome. Johnny Depp totally ran away with his role, he had you on a roller coaster of pure excitement, intrigue, and some villianary. He actually made you root for the bad...well bad and not so bad guy. His character was just amazingly done. I was sad to see he didn't win the Oscar for that performance. I guess the Oscars though that since it was Disney he shouldn't get it or something. Like it was to kiddy to win a grown up Oscars Award or something. I can't very well Judge to much haveing not seen Mystic River and Sean Penns roll. However, I just really wanted a Pirate to Win and see what kind of Pirate-y things he would have said or done for the acceptance speech. Johnny Depp, "I want te be thanking me mates in 'de film they all did a jolly good job." Johnny's hands come out in the 5 finger pointing action and fingers twitching, while eyes and head cocked to the side says, "I'd also, like 'te be thanking me rum fer it gets me through a many a tough Piratey night."

I did like the movie, a lot. I wasn't a pirate at the time, but somehow i KNEW that was what i was destined to be. I worked at Tokyo Disney for two years (just got back a few months ago), and I was able to ride the Pirates ride there too (funny, i didnt see the "Ninjas of the Japanese Imperial Garden" there...).

The movie is oddly very true to the ride, which causes me to send kudos to the filmmakers for successfully transferring a theme park ride to a successful movie, which was in competition with the Hunk and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, at the time. and i gotta say... Rum is pretty tasty :)

Why are ya'll downing Ninjas too? I didn't know about the Pirates II, is Depp going to retake his roll? I hope so, in my opinion he made the movie. I really think he carried it. Although Geoffrey Rush was very good as well, well he's much like Depp good in anything he's in.

actually Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Kiera Knightly are all resuming their roles from the first movie. they are the only actors signed up so far for the new Pirates movie set to hit theatres in 2006. you should be able to check up on in on the Internet Movie Database site (http://www.imdb.com). hope this helps

As for downing So-Called ninjas. Ahhhh HCRealms history lesson! The So-Called ninjas (aka Basil wannabe's aka ninjerks) made a thread about how great they were. As a joke I made almost the exact same post in a new thread except about PIRATES. It took off from there. Both Threads got closed and people got banned. Nightcrawler made a new thread and I returned to it some time afterwards. After the the So-Called ninjas proclaimed there superiority and posted there win on this thread.

I happen to be the newest addition (i think) to the Mighty Pirate Clan. Even though i lived in Japan, I know that society (american, canadian, british, japanese, you name it) happens to be more enamoured with the mystique of Pirates MUCH MORE than they ever will be of the So-called NinJerks.

Our thread is supported by the wiser, mellower, seasoned, intellectual crop in the realms. the Basil-wannabe Clan is larger due to the fact that a lot of people here are underaged goth skaters who havent quite matured yet, and the older ones who STILL havent quite matured.

All in all, we actually get along well, and our rivalry is good natured. besides, if it wasnt, ninjas have little paper swords. Pirates are men and we play with large long range explosive devices. ;)

but they were back even before that. In the Earth2 Graphic Novel, and then a few times in Action Comics after that. I understand that they were updated to mirror the current JLA roster for that particular storyline, but then they were resurrected in mainstream DCU occurrences. After the Crisis, was their universe reborn as well, and it was unobserved? Or were they allowed life for sake of that GN, and the plan was that they were destined to be returned to death, which was accomplished in JLA/Avengers?

Honestly, I really like them. Especially the revamped syndicate. most noticably taking away OwlMan's mind control powers. That was too much of an advantage over Bats.

Once again I stumble back to this great Pirate thread to see no real posts about Pirate's or Pirate movies, books, comics...wait that would be cool. Are there any Pirate Comics? So Ando which Conan Book have you started on? I like the First Conan story 'Hour of the Dragon' a really good read, fun and fast paced with a lot of excitement.

I like that Nin-Jerks thing that is FUNNY who came up with that? Whoever you are that is really a good....(can't remember intelligent word for what that is called) Good twisting of words....DOH! Arrr... me wife just came back from the book store with the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis which I hadn't read since I were a wee Pirate. I picked up Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe and have been enjoyin it so haven't gotten to the Conan books yet. She also got A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle and I were plannin' on readin' that next. Not so much Pirate literature, but good reads nonetheless. I'm sure I'll get around to Conan here very soon...

I am going to be bothered by Troy. I read the Iliad and studied it in English class back in the day, have always enjoyed Myth I like Norse and Celtic mythology better, but I have done some good studies in Eastern Myth and Philosophy. Anyways complaint about Troy. Brad Pitt Plays Achilles, you know the one that is only vulnerable in the heel, aparently a mortal point on which to focus your impotent ire. Anyways in the preview it shows him throwing a woman to the bed, but in the Iliad he doesn't have a girlfriend all he has is some little pretty boy to help with his "armor". Little things like that bug my about books made into movies. Doesn't change the story in any way, shape or form, but those little things nag at me. Which is why all pirate movies ####, you want a good movie? Go see Iron Monkey or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

By the way, I read the book and saw the movie, book way better, I was into Crichton for a while then fell off after Lost World, kind of lost interest. Good pirate series for you, Clive Cussler's Dirk Pit novels, he even has the occasional Ninja.

Arrrr! I be here as well! Sad news: I came in DEAD LAST at the Marquee on Friday! This marquee was highly unusual . . . I'll report later . . .

The marquee I played in was not usual:
4 rounds, for each of the first 3 rounds, open one booster and play all four characters. Points do not count, only KOs. Total number of KOs determine ranking. Final round, use all 12 characters. The two front runners played head to head, the other 4 players played a four way battle.

This unusual format was the judge's attempt at limiting the possibility that a KC Superman would run away with the tourney.

There were 6 players. All of us opened 3 boosters each and each pulled ALMOST ALL ROOKIES!

I was not in the "championship" match, and I pretty much grew apathetic about the whole deal, so I didn't really even try to KO any figures in the final match.

Well, the judge was trying it as an experiment but after seeing how it went he assured us that the Ultimates marquee will be standard format.

The idea was that KC Superman would at most help to win 2 rounds via KOs: the first round he was pulled in, and the final round. The theory was sound, but the game play suffered a bit.

It may not look like much, but this team is nasty. Send Doom out taxiing Pyro and have Avalanche cover them both with Barrier. Move Yukio up behind Doom as Master-Mind Fodder and Enhance Doom and Pyro. TK up Marrow next to Doom and perplex + Enhance a 5-damage shot from her. Brainiac moves around for the Outwit.

Sinestro brings up the rear and stays close to starting area. Scarab sticks close to Phoenix and Sinestro ready to be a TK bullet or to guard the big fig. After Doom clears and barrier comes down he can take a 5-damage shot (enhance + perplex), then after he's finished - if opponent isn't dead, fire with Pyro and push with Marrow (that's potentially 8 more clix of damage). If there's still anyone in range, move Yukio over to stand next to Sinestro and Enhance his damage with a multi-attack that does 4 clix of damage per attack with a range of 10.

This team is just hard to take down. You can push with Doom and trade a click back from Marrow, Phoenix, or Braniac. If Doom gets injured, pull him back and trade clix to him from Marrow. When Marrow gets back on her regen, rinse, repeat.

This team is especially effective if there are no medics allowed. If medics were allowed I'd definitely be packing my LE Jane Foster.

As fun as capturing is (I did capture a Darkseid near the end of one of my games the other night), I've found it's much easier to just blast the shinola out of my opponent's figs with Sinestro rather than going for the capture. A Capture takes 2 rounds minimum, and that's IF you capture someone in your starting area: during that same time I could dish between 12 and 16 clix (depending on whether or not damage is perplexed/enhanced) of damage to up to 4 different targets. You tell me which is more deadly?

I only do it on figures that are semi-extended and 'worth it' , but if I want to go for a capture, here's how I work it with the current team:

I base my opponent's fig with Phoenix AND another fig that can dish good damage (either Marrow or Doom). Opponent will typically try to take out the fig that can do big damage. Then phoenix TK's them into B2B with Sinestro. This is particularly effective on big-point figs with so-so defensive values. (ex. Darkseid, Absorbing man, etc...)

Aslo, the rolling barrier is particularly handy on this team: Since Sinestro is such a big target, putting a barrier in front of him is great, but you can also use it to hold a figure in place that is B2B with him so he can neither attack nor run away:

I don't see her used much but I just *love* pairing her up with enhance and perplex. That 12 range is golden. Morgan Le Fey is particularly effective with 12 range and PB with Enhance / Perplex, but I've found she's a bit of a liability if I'm facing a TKer + a MCer as a savvy opponent will MC Morgan to triple-target MC 3 of your highest point-value figs and make her eat 2-4 clix and then have up to 3 of your own figures to beat the snot out of your own team with... (and with all of the Saturn Girls and Cosmic boys running around it's not that uncommon to encounter such a force)

I still just can't resist using Morgan every now and then..

It's time for some P.E. (Pirate Education). last time i mentioned the Anime One Piece. Now i will delve into its characters in the hopes that this will make us all better pirates and that you may pick up a video or copy of the manga if you have a chance.
here goes...

One Piece: Monkey D. Luffy (Captain)

Monkey D. Luffy (or "Luffy") is introduced in the Anime at the end of the first episode of the series. He springs out of a barrel that had been fished out of the sea and left in the kitchen of a huge luxury liner. As he springs out, he exclaims "HARAHETTAAAA!!!" which is Nihongo for "I'm HUNGRY!".

In the next episode, he comes to the aid of Cobby a little pink haired pansy (reminescent of Basil Elks) who was taken into indentured servitude by Lady Alvida, a monstrously huge pirate queen who, in my opinion, may have actually been a Ninja who was trying her hand at the Buccaneer life.

It is there, fighting the Lady A and her crew, that you see the full extent of his power. the power of the "Akuma no mi", or Devil Fruit, that he wields is the Gomu Gomu (Gum Gum) or Rubber power.

Where that power differs from that of Plastic Man, Reed Richards, and Elongated Man, is that he cant shape change. Instead it's more true to the properties of rubber that he can repel bullets, use himself as a slingshot, inflate himself like a balloon, and extend the reach of his punches. It seems like his power is less effective than that of the malleable heros of DC and Marvel. Instead it's even more so, given that he also seems to be impervious to any attack save B/C/F. One of his strongest attacks "Gomu Gomu no Pistol", is basically a rapid flurry of high powered punches. Basically, if he was a clix figure, he would give even Superman and Magog a run for their money.

The main appeal of Luffy, in my opinion, lies in his personality. He is a very pure and simple person, fiercely loyal, a little insane and always up for an adventure. He's also very gullible, prone to misunderstanding people and extremely honest .. traits that sometimes get him into a lot of trouble. But this absolute unpretentiousness is ultimately what makes him such a likeable character. Luffy is always happy and carefree - he seems to rely on the fact that he's always been 'a lucky kind of guy'. Not many things bother him, unless he is made angry by disloyalty or cruelty - in these cases he can become very serious and fierce.

There's MUCH more to this character, and yet he is actually among the simplest in the crew. Like i mentioned last time, Oda-san gave more development and personality to these animated characters than some of the guys ive dated in the past few years.

The Exp Captain America can just barely beat Exp Batman. WIth a few lucky rolls Batman can win. I'd still give it to Captain America 6 out of 10 times.

Captain America's defense never drops below 15, and it is 16 for most of the dial. With Batman's lower AV, that alone gives Cap a pretty big advantage, never mind the Impervious and his much higher AV . . .

Yes, I often forget about this b/c it's virtually useless with all the Superman TA guys since they can all fly, but on Cap it will be a boon: being able to charge *through* hindering terrain might take an opponent or two by surprise and is a nice ability to have regardless.

they've released the first few volumes of the manga (comic) in the US. you can get them at any comic or bookstore.

you can purchase bad english subs on ebay for like 10 bucks for a dvd set of 30 eps. (that is what i did).

I'm visiting friends in miami right now, so my attendance will be scarce til the weekend. but if i have time later tonight, i will post the events of this past weekend at my first tournament.

I loaded COH on my laptop last night.... and the graphics are showing up in B&W on the characters.... so I d/led a new u/g from my graphics card thinking that would fix it and... nuthing... I even turned the details and graphics and stuff way down. I did everything but go to 800 x 600 display which I might have to try tonight (If I get the chance to get one... it's my wife's Bday today). I know Luke B. had the same problem and I PMed to see if he figured out how to fix it, but he hasn't replied back. If you've heard of this problem and how to fix it, please let me know so we can get to kickin' more ninjas arses ASAP.

so, this weekend my roommate and I drove down to Miami to visit our old roommates from undergrad who just got married in Jan.

On the way down, we stopped in Leesburg to visit my roommate's dad. The next day there happened to be a sealed tournament, and i decided to try my luck. It would be my first, so i was fully prepared to lose.

When i signed up on the WizKids site, there was only one other player signed up, and it said it was a 300pt sealed booster. it explained that you buy three boosters and build a 300 point team from that. thats not exactly what happened.

When we started, we were allowed to buy one booster and we played our four, no matter the point value. it was very interesting. i pulled:

well, when i stopped peeing on myself, we started. he played well, very well. but i was taught the game by Iceman425 (a ninja who should be a pirate), who is an amazing player (of the TWO ive ever met, lol).

Once i had activated black adam, i HSS'd Hal with a Hard Object and missed. my cellphone rang, so i ended my turn without having Black Adam continue on his way. He got BA for 4 with RCE and i missed the Impervious roll. then he moved killer frost into position to attack. and i forgot to mention, the previous turn, he based CB and Scarecrow with his gotham cop and HG.

I charged Frosty with HG and got her for two, then used scarecrow to take the cop for two. he then retaliated by attempting on Scarecrow with the cop, and he crit-missed (apparently i actually have probability control), but then used V HG to knock CB onto his B/C/F click (hehehe).

I like to imagine that instead of CB transforming into some kind of beast with claws or somethin, instead he turns into a 7ft tall pirate with the scalps of random NinJerks tied around his belt. well this huge Buccaneer then uses scarecrow's attack of 8 (using LSH+Bat Enemy) and hits HG. I then roll a 6 for B/C/F taking her out completely. BA then breaks away and jets to areas out of the reach of Hal.

in the next few turns, i kill the undercover cop and frosty, and he gets another hit on CB and HG, and moves Hal out of range of scarecrow. in the next two turns i move HG and CB to base Hal, then moved scarecrow in range of hal in hindering terrain. at the same time, i had BA pick up a Hard Object and start to wind into range of hal, hiding behind HG and CB.

Once he cleared Hal and i cleared my kids, he took out CB with one hit. i cleared scarecrow. He then uses willpower to try and take out scarecrow. i used my personal PC to cause him to Crit-miss for the second time. then next turn, i use my chaos powers to roll double sixes and catch Hal for another three. the timer ends as i move BA next to Hal who i would then push to seal the deal.

the first part was over, and i was still standing. I guess i had the Luck of Jack Sparrow with me. But it wasnt over yet. The manager pulled us around and assigned the 6 players a number, and was going to roll for Fellowship. I had always assumed that it was voted on by the other players, but instead he would roll 1 6-sided dice for it. this was for LE Matches Malone.

Since i was player #3, i used my PC to cause him to roll 3. Ha, i was awarded fellowship. Since the tournament wasnt over, he rolled a second time for a runner up incase i won the day and LE Hector Hall (Like i wanted ANYTHING else...).

once that was taken care of, the remaining three players prepped for a 3-way melee.

That story comes tomorrow....

So, it had beed establish'd that i would be walking out of there with something. With that, we all set up for the 3-way melee.

I had my same crew. my opponents were:

Player II (NinJerk #1) -
U Director Bones
E Brainiac 5
E Hawkgirl
V Killer Frost

Player III (NinJerk #2)-
R Killer Croc
E Maxima
V Gotham Undercover
V Cheshire


After rolling for turns (i got highest roll), and placing objects, we began. Starting with me, i moved BA next to HG and she moved him to hindering terrain. Basil #2 then used Braniac5 to carry Bones over to me to base my R HG. After which he used HG to carry Frosty in view of Basil #3 (like the backstabbing losers they are). NinJerk #3 (N3) moved maxima, who carried cheshire, in range of HG and Frosty using her JLA free move. Then moved Crock next to HG and the Gotham U into hindering terrain.

Within the next few moves, HG fell from Poisoning and a successful attack from Bones. BA ran around the corner, grabbed an HO, came back and put Director Bones on a higher plane. He then Crit-missed me with Frosty. Maxima's team then demolished HG with Cheshire and Croc, and severly weakened Frosty.

Out of pity, i moved my forces away from NinJerk2 and started to gather my forces to take on Maxima. The stupid ninja then attacked CB with Frosty after outwitting toughness. got him past his B/C/F which sucked. thats fine. whatever. then the cannabalistic Ninjerk3 moves on Frosty with maxima. however, i used my personal PC to cause her to Crit-miss. she then pushed her Gotham U to push to hit CB, and missed.

before the timer expired, BA grabbed another HO and succeded a HSS attack on Maxima for 5 (3 with Inv. added in). scarecrow got her for another two. then the timer buzzed.
it was over.

the total kill points were tallied. I had 80 from killing Bones, and NinJerk3 got 39 from HG from canibalizing her fellow basil-wannabe, and he had 27 from poisoning HG to death.

however, we then had to add up the total number of points we had. BA+CB+Scarecrow+Bones = 291. Player2 knew he was done, so he didnt even add up his total. NinJoke#3 had maxima+KCroc+Cheshire+GothamU+HG=294. i lost because her initial point total was HIGHER going into the game. It was kinda unfair, but there was nothing we could do that that point. It had seemed that RUP had won the day and my LE Hector Hall.

Turns out my natural charisma won the NinJerk#3 over to the side of right. She threw her frisbees to the ground, poured out her dew, and put on an eye-patch. She THEN complained to the judge/owner that it was unfair that she won because i had i higher kill total, even with my loss. As the wannabe-basil-wannabe sucked the dew out of the carpet, he said there was nothing he could do, and left.

with pity (or perhaps i used my Mind Control), she asked if there was anything i had to trade, knowing my love for Fate. I then pulled out the extra magog i pulled in the booster pack i didnt open to use in the tourney. She accepted it then allowed me to present her and the other Ninjas with a PROPER warriors death of me beheading her with my three Katana. So, going into my first tourney, knowing nothing, against 7 other NinJokes, i walked out with BOTH prizes. LE Hector Hall and LE Matches Malone were BOTH mine!!!

The ironic thing was, had i actually won, Matches would have gone to someone else, and I would have only had Hector. perhaps, subconsciously, i had allowed Killer Frost to live, knowing had i taken her and secured the win, i would have only attained Hector.

I continued on my way to Miami in a GREAT mood.

On the COH front:

Got Mephisopheles up to level 8 (almost 9)...

I'm a little uncertain about the powers I chose...

Probably should have gotten Hover so I could fly by level 14, but decided Meph is more likely to be a teleporter instead of a flyer....

So I got Teleport and chose the 'teleport friend' option... but I haven't been able to successfully use the Teleport power. I've seen it used before and thought it would extremely handy, but thus far it's just been frustrating b/c I can't get it to work...

Manchine: Should I have gotten Flight instead?

I also chose a leadership power "assult" which supposedly helps my teammates do more damage, but it too seems like a waste b/c it's not a power that I can actually *use* ... it's just a passive power that doesn't seem to make much of a difference to me...

So I'm thinking about starting a new character but I dunno...

Regardless the game is a blast, I only wish I had more free-time to play...

Any other PIRATES going to pick it up anytime soon?

On Clix:

I've managed some nice captures with the ol' Sinestro. I'm pretty convinced that for 100 points, it's very hard to do better than a Sinestro or a Sintinel.

Ok so you've seen this team (or a similar version) before, but I just can't get over how fun it is to play with a Sinestro, a little Enhance, PC, and rolling Barrier...

For Teleport Friend. You have to kliq on the name of the person. Then kliq the power then kliq the spot you want to have them teleport to. Its a good power. specially when you get Group teleport.

Flight is not a must have if you have Teleport.

You should have 4 attack power ASAP! That way you can cycle through all 4 of them and get the max out of the time your attacking.
