Superman vs. The Sentinels
Pt. 1
“Only a few more miles”, Superman thinks to himself as he approaches Washington D.C. soaring over the many buildings and structures that make the capital.
“Sawyer said the suspect from customs was given a substantial bribe from a Lexcorp ‘associate’ to keep quiet… Not substantial enough now it seems”.
Superman continues,
“Luthor has always been a collector of all things exotic, but when a few pounds of kryptonite makes its way through quarantine with his name on it, it usually finds its way in front of me.”
“He wants to rub me out, but from what this time?” Superman asks himself.
Superman continues to soar, he sees the White House in sight. Luthor is on the balcony smoking a cigar. Superman again thinks to himself,
“By the looks of it that looks like a Cuban, yes indeed; all things exotic”.
Superman lands on the balcony a few yards behind Lex. Lex is looking across the Washington city lights continuing to smoke his cigar,
“Good evening Kal-El, I trust you had a pleasant flight?” Luthor asks.
“You can cut the small talk Luthor, your kryptonite is being held as evidence in the Metropolis S.C.U. vaults; you don’t seem to be doing well with your rock collection.”
Luthor gives Superman a grimacing look, but continues back to being coy,
“A mere informality, I’ll have that rock one way or the other. But it’s of no importance now, what matters is that you’re here now hook, line and sinker.” Luthor says.
“Hook, line and sinker? So this was all part of an elaborate plan to get me to come here and see you, I do have a phone you know?” Superman says remaining quite stern.
Lex laughs to himself and begins to walk in to his office, Superman follows.
“It amazes me that one with an origin like yours can develop such wit that seems, well, almost human” Luthor huffs as he continues to walk over to his desk. Luthor takes a seat and takes a puff of his cigar, blowing ring holes with the smoke.
“Please”, Luthor starts,
“Have a seat”.
“If you don’t mind I’ll stand,” Superman replies. Superman stands with his arms folded and continues to interrogate Luthor.
“What are you up to Lex? You couldn’t have just got me here for a social visit.”
“Like you said, you’ve brought me here ‘hook, line and sinker’, but I don’t see the sinker part yet”. Superman says.
“Yes well you’re quite correct there Superman, but what makes you think there is a ‘sinker’?” Lex replies.
Superman scans the room with his x-ray vision, and notices Luthor holding a small remote-control device in his hand under neath the desk. Superman asks,
“I don’t suppose that’s the remote for room service you’re holding there?” Luthor looks down at his hand and replies,
“Ah, so you noticed my little gadget. I’ll have you know this is no ordinary room service remote.” Luthor pauses,
“To explain better, just divert your attention to the monitors on the wall there”.
Superman turns to the wall as we see four television monitors appear from above. The monitors show some kind of production line involving a lot of machinery. Superman steps closer to get a better look.
“Robots.” Superman thinks to himself.
“What you are watching now Superman, are completely self-automated production lines in four top-secret locations around the United States, building what I have recently come to know, as ‘Sentinels’”.
“Sentinels?” Superman questions.
“Allow me to give you a brief history lesson my alien friend”, Luthor begins.
“During the 1960s the American government discovered quite a large ‘mutant’ problem infecting the United States and several other countries around the world.”
“Many civilians saw these mutants as a threat to society; they bared intimidating powers, powers that many people have not seen the likes of ever.”
“In fear, many people rallied towards the White House demanding ‘protection’ from these evolving meta-humans, and so we passed legislation to produce a ‘mutant control organisation’, who as a result, built the first Sentinel, a mutant hunter.”
“Of course we only used them to police the mutants who stepped out of line, but they quickly became our safe-guard against a growing threat.” Luthor explained.
“So what has this got to do with me Lex? What’s your game?”
Lex presses the button on his remote and then says,
“I recently attained access to these secret locations Superman and I ordered that the Sentinels be reprogrammed”.
Superman walks over to Luthor’s desk.
“These are my new toys Superman and I want to play a new game”.
Superman grabs Luthor by the front of his suit and lifts him towards his face,
“What have you done Lex?”
“I called for room service Superman, hook, line and…” A loud thud is heard from the outside, Superman looks towards the balcony. A mechanical walking-like sound then follows. Luthor continues,
“Sinker Superman; I’m testing my new toys on you. You… are now the Sentinels’ prime target”.
Superman gives Lex an angry looks at Luthor, and then drops him to the floor. Luthor lands on his backside with a thud as Superman begins walking towards the balcony. Luthor then says chuckling,
“Let the games begin… Alien!”
Superman walks out on to the balcony, and there, about 30 yards in front of him, stands a 50 foot tall robot. Superman sizes up his opponent. The lone Sentinel then says in a brooding mechanical voice,
“Target Superman confirmed. Initiating combat sequence; diverting power to weapons”.
Superman then stands in a “ready” position, anticipating a ranged attack. The Sentinel then raises its arms towards Superman revealing cannon ports in the palms of its hands.
“Targeting”, the Sentinel utters. An increasing humming sound begins to emit from the Sentinel as a bright blast of red streams from its hands with a thunderous zap heading towards Superman. Superman only has a nanno-second to decide what to do now.
To be continued…
Superman vs. The Sentinels
Pt. 2
Superman stands his ground thrusting his chest forward as the laser projectiles hit him in the middle of his ‘S’. The blast hits and it flies him backwards through the balcony door smashing glass on the way through to Lex’s office. A large gaping hole that used to be the balcony door now stands. Lex watches as Superman is blasted backward through office furniture closely followed by shards of glass and wood, Lex cowers for his own protection. Superman’s flight is eventually broken by a wall at the rear of the office.
Superman lies on the floor stunned, but eventually stands up regaining his composure.
“Come on Superman, you’re not going to let a robot beat you now are you?” Luthor gloats. Superman ignores Lex’s remark as he looks straight towards outside. Superman, with a determined look on his face, flies out towards the Sentinel picking up the office desk on his way.
“Targeting,” the Sentinel starts, “Diverting power to shields.”
Superman now carrying the office desk in his hands, flies towards the Sentinel at almost blistering speed takes swing at the Sentinel’s breaking the desk on impact and whip-lashing the Sentinel’s head backward on a right angle flipping back to it’s upright position. Small sparks begin to fly from the Sentinel’s neck as we see a large dent in its face around its nose, mouth and eyes. Superman hovers ready to deliver the next blow. Without any more hesitation, Superman lets fly with massive left and right punch combinations to the Sentinel’s face, taking advantage of its semi-stunned state. More sparks begin to fly from the neck of the Sentinel.
Things look in favour of Superman until almost without warning; Superman is grabbed from behind by one of the hands of the Sentinel. Superman let’s out a small yell as the Sentinel begins to crush him with his mighty mechanical hand. Superman’s arms are pinned within the Sentinel’s palm. Superman continues to struggle, his face strains with effort as he tries to fight the Sentinel’s hands collapsing on his body. Superman then hears more humming emit from the Sentinel’s body, he’s charging up for another blast. Superman knows he needs to get out from the Sentinel’s grip quick smart. As the humming grows louder, Superman strains with an enormous effort, the sound of cracking and breaking begins to be heard from the Sentinel’s hand. With one last final effort, Superman breaks free from the Sentinel exploding the mechanical hand as it falls in pieces towards the ground. The humming fades and dies. Superman now free, flies away from the Sentinel giving himself some space.
“Primary weapon malfunction, neutral tactics engaged” the Sentinel utters as it holds up its left arm looking at where its hand used to be; sparks fly out from the robotic stump. The Sentinel advances towards Superman raising its ‘good’ hand firing laser pulses at Superman. Superman flies around the laser projectiles easily avoiding them. The Sentinel’s eyes then flare up as it lets out an optic blast from its eyes; Superman takes it on the chest barely flinching.
“An optic blast? Let’s see how you handle one of mine” Superman says quite confidently. With that, Superman’s eyes begin to glow as a flash of red shoots from his eyes on to the chest of the Sentinel. There is a sizzle as smoke rises from the Sentinel’s chest. Burn marks appear and more sparks fly as the smoke clears from the Sentinel’s chest. Superman, caught slightly off guard, is pummelled to the ground as the Sentinel charges in swiping its fist over the Man of Steel in retaliation. Superman lands on his back in to the ground as the Sentinel begins to stomp on him with his massive foot. Bam! The first blow lands on Superman. Bam! The second blow lands on Superman, he’s looks up again to see the foot coming down on him a third instant. Bam! This time the Sentinel decides to squish Superman as he begins to twist his foot on top of the Man of Steel. After a moment of squashing, we see the Sentinel’s foot rise slowly from the ground, the Sentinel struggles to force it back down, but Superman has a solid hold on the foot as he slowly begins to raise it above his body and stand holding on to it. Superman, now effectively has the Sentinel in his grasp. The Sentinel struggles to shake Superman loose from his foot, but the Man of Steel isn’t letting go.
Superman, with the Sentinel’s foot in hand, flies up a few metres which dangles the Sentinel like a rat being held by its tail. Superman then begins to spin around with the Sentinel like an Olympic hammer thrower. Round and around Superman spins. Superman builds so much momentum that the sound of cracking and snapping comes from the Sentinel’s joints; it can’t handle g-force from the spinning. Before it sounds like the Sentinel’s leg is about to pull off from its body, Superman hurtles the mechanical behemoth in to the night sky like a rocket. Superman watches the Sentinel sky off in to the distance until he is satisfied. Superman lands gently on the ground and begins to make his way back towards Luthor’s office.
Not a second passes when we hear what sounds like a harrier jet zooming through the sky, Superman’s ears prick up and he looks towards the sky. Using his telescopic vision, Superman to his amazement sees the Sentinel flying directly towards him at a horrendous speed. Superman not wasting a second begins to fly towards the Sentinel for a mid-air confrontation.
The Man of Steel and the Iron-Giant begin their mid-air face off, counting down the distance between them. Both will certainly connect in mid-air.
“Target Superman, distance four point four miles and approaching rapidly. Estimated time of minimum proximity, twelve seconds”, the Sentinel utters. Superman accelerates, now looking more determined than ever.
“Eleven seconds” says the Sentinel. The Sentinel accelerates.
“Ten seconds”.
“Nine seconds”.
“Eight seconds”. Superman’s eyes flash and begin to glow red.
“Seven seconds”. The Sentinel’s eyes flash and begin to glow red.
“Six seconds”.
“Five seconds”.
“Four seconds”. Superman lunges forward even more to accelerate.
“Three seconds”. More humming starts to emit from the Sentinel again, its eyes glow brighter.
“Two seconds”. There’s no backing out now.
“One second…”
There’s a boom… then there’s darkness.
Just outside from the White House we see Luthor on his balcony once more, he is looking towards the sky trying to get a clue on what’s been happening up there. Something catches his attention as his eyes widen and as he begins to step back with his mouth gaping open. Very shortly after we see the headless body of a Sentinel plummet in to the White House grounds bouncing a couple of times before lying still completely motionless… dead. Superman then lands a short while after holding the head of the Sentinel by the chords its neck in his hand. Superman drops the head of the Sentinel to the ground before landing himself. The head of the Sentinel bounces twice before rolling towards the balcony where Luthor is still standing.
“Oh bravo Superman”, Luthor says clapping quite patronisingly.
“It’s over Lex” Superman says in a stern voice looking up towards Luthor. Lex reaches for his inside breast pocket and pulls out another cigar, he lights it and takes a few puffs as he says,
“No, I’m afraid it isn’t Kal-El; we haven’t even scratched the surface.”
“But, I am a sportsman after all; you have taken the trophy in this game” Lex says. Superman yells back,
“I am not a contestant in your game shows Luthor…” Before Superman can finish, Luthor interrupts yelling back,
“You are my puppet Superman, and I will continue pulling the strings AS I WILL.”
“I will always call the shots Kal-El, and you will always come limping to me like a pathetic little puppy begging for a pat on the head.”
Superman flies up towards the balcony and lands just in front of Luthor, standing only inches away from his face.
“I’ll be watching you Lex, don’t forget it.” Superman says pointing his finger. Superman slowly steps away still with his gaze fixed on Luthor, then turns and takes off, flying in to the distance.
Luthor takes a puff of his cigar and walks back in to his office and heads towards the four monitors on the wall. Taking another puff, he looks at the screens smirking at the lines and lines of Sentinels being constructed on screen.
“I won’t forget it Superman; I’m counting on it.”
