More Critical Mass Shots

Hi guys. I dont know if anyone has posted this already, but my distributer got a flyer regarding critical mass. Here is the front and back.

Aside from the very cool looking Venom on the back, if you look closely you can see a couple figures on the side of the box (front pic)

It looks to me like a Captain Marvel to the right, 2nd one down. He looks like he has a silver ring. To the left of him is a man who's mostly green with a bit of yellow, and horns. Could this be Loki? I cant tell what the top 2 are, although the top right person looks like its in a pose that the Rhino would be in. Good news for collectors though, if you look at the Spider-Man at the bottom, he has a red ring, meaning he will have 3 versions instead of being a unique. What do you all think?

Another (minorly) interesting thing is that this was apparently printed prior to the change of release date. This mentions November, which was what the original release rumor was for. I'm hoping we get a confirmation of the CM release date soon after Indy hits the shops, if not before. I'm hoping for December 3rd.

If you read the 2nd image on the back it says 1 rulebook included. There was another thread out about if they were going to pull the starters and put the new rules in. Guess they figured they would just handle the problem with crit mass.

Wow, when I first looked at the picture of the box I couldn't figure out who any of them were. After seeing your suggestions of who might be on the side of the box, I think that you are absolutely correct. Rhino upper right, Loki middle left (with what looks like a yellow ring, so hopefully he is an REV), Captain Mar-Vell middle/lower right, Spider-Man lower left.

Who is that in the upper left? It looks like he has orange/red boots, gloves, shoulders and helmet, with maybe spikes or points on his helmet. Any guesses? I'll have to look through the Marvel Encyclopedia and see if I can find anyone who looks like that.

Boy, I am excited about this set based on what I've seen so far.

I hate that Venom and Spidey seem to be AEs, but regardless WIZKIDS, I LOVE YOU!!!! Venom looks awesome. The only two figures that need to be done now are Scarlet Spider and Carnage. I have renewed faith that WK will come through with those two.

It's really hard to make out the guys on the box. The one on the bottom is Venom (easy to compare to his pic in the second shot), and the flying guy could be Captain Marvel. The top one in the strange pose, is that Rhino charging? The other two are a complete mystery to me, the top one looks like Spider-Man, but the pose is wrong, and all i can tell from the fig below him is that's it's apparently a Rookie Something...

Hm, you maybe right, all I can make out is a dark figure with outstrectched limbs on top of something. I thought the white area in the center of the figure was Venom's spider, but it could be the light coming through the open area between Spiderman's arms.

I just zoomed into the pic as a gif, I agree with the obvious E Rhino, V Spidey, Capt Mar-Vell, although I think that's a unique. I can't make out the one everyone thinks is Loki, but he does have a yellow ring. As for the top one, after zooming over and over, the color scheme is blue, orange, and grayish. I really think its Thanos outstretching his arms. There's a silver ring on him and we all want him so bad, who wouldn't think he'd be included in Critical Mass as a foil to Silver Surfer? Just my two cents, but I believe whole-heartedly that is Thanos.

others have identified the middle left fig as Diablo which looks right when you think about it. As for the top left, I still think Thanos, but some are saying Dormammu. I guess the only way to tell would be rather the belt is orange or yellow. Otherwise, their costumes are somewhat similar and hard to tell from this pic. Maybe if I saw it in person?

i'm not saying it is Thanos for sure, although it certainly looks exactly like him. As for flying, when in comics does he ever really fly? He teleports. But I don't think I've ever seen him fly. HS speed? That could cover a lot of things. And, to beat a dead horse, the fig's color scheme matches up. Critical Mass suggests power figures. WizKids have been good about listening to our wish lists, and a lot of people have asked for a more well-rounded Thanos. Plus, that AV has to change. The pose, the colors, everything suggests that Thanos is a possibility. I just don't see how people can be so adamant that he is not in the set.

The Bottom Left figure is a Rookie so he's obviously R/E/V.

Top Right is an Experienced so it's another R/E/V.

I feel like we're discussing a bad UFO or Loch Ness Monster picture. I'll grant that I can see Capt. Marvel (in one version or another) in the lower right figure and the bottom does match Venom, but as for the rest, well, the number of different people who are each sure that they see a different figure in them, it's kind of a wishful thinking thing. The people who really want another Thanos are seeing Thanos. The people who want Carnage see Carnage. It's just kind of funny.

I'll agree that the top left looks like Thanos, but he looks to be far too small on his base to be him. The reddish look could also be the distortion of a gold color... I don't know, the way the colors are laid out look exactly like the layout of Thanos... Anyone else have a simular layout?

Oh, and that's definately Daredevil's face. Dormammu's face doesn't look like that... and I don't believe I've EVER seen a picture of him with horns like that... I'm hoping we get a DD instead of an Elektra... and I too hope it will be yellow.

Venom looks very cool. Not the pose I would have picked (crouching on the pillar, one arm reaching low down it, face looking forward with the tongue twisting, drooling green) but this one works too. I hope the stats are good... maybe they'll do him right the first time... though they still haven't made a Spidey I'm 100% happy with... or even 90%... but yea, cool sculpts...

I'm hoping that's just a bad picture of the venom sculpt because it just looks silly. He's supposed to be dark, crazy, and animalistic. If they're going to put him on the little building top stand like Spider-Man then they should have him hunched over with his massive tongue hanging out looking sinister, not prancing around doing the karate kid pose. The more I think about it the more I don't like the little building terrain below the Spider-Man and Venom. I mean as I move them around the map are they carrying that piece of building with them? Do they get a hindering terrain bonus? Can they be carried, because I imagine that building is kinda heavy? I know I'm just being difficult here but it just seems weird to have terrain in a sculpt when that figure is going to be moving all around a map, often times nowhere near a building.

BTW, I think the rest of the figures look great ... well Hulk does still need his bunny slippers.

Its not deadpool, not the right spots for his costume coloration, and his pose begs for swords or guns or attitude of some kind.

I agree that Surfer's pose is kind of disapointing, he just doesn't impress. A bigger board and maybe some glowing energy around his fists would do wonders.

My guess for the top left would have to be Batroc the Leaper, because the colors almost work and he would be the most absurd figure ever. Zoot alour, it is ze leaper!

Venom's sculpt could have been a lot better, i wonder what the explanation for the chimney-hopping spiderman figures is.

I guess its inevitable, but I hope that somehow there is no Elektra in the set. We have way too many figures already for a character that nobody in particular even likes.

Here's a handy picture I made to illustrate my Mysterio idea.

You can see the shading of the underside of the bowl on the Critical Mass box. He has the cape bunched up under the helmet, and then he has those eye things underneath. The pose looks more like he's getting ready to smash a smoke pellet than charge into battle.

Mysterio? Naw, though I do hope he's in the set. I still think it's Rhino, charging forwards with only one leg on the base, the other streched out behind him as he runs. And I'm now pretty sure that the red guy across from him is Carnage, with one of his arms morhed into a sword and swung back.

Of course I apparently got the guy on the bottom wrong, mixing up Spider-Man and Venom, so it's not like anyone has to believe me.

I happen to like Elektra quite a lot. Just because you're not a fan, and none of your friends are, doesn't mean that nobody is. She's been a popular character for pretty much as long as she's been around, otherwise the books featuring her wouldn't sell and Marvel probably wouldn't have bothered putting her in every set.

On the other hand: I think it's a bit ridiculous that they decided to put all the "big names" in EVERY set.

Does anyone else hate the way Patch has his claws out. Wolverine as Patch almost never used his claws! I was hoping for a fig with CCE as opposed to B/C/F. (i know they're different not the same stat slots, but y'know what I'm saying) I mean, i think the whole `a hulk, a wolvie and spidey and an electra' in every set thing is a big enough wank as it is, but if they're gonna do it, at least do it right.

And i'm not even gonna attemp to guess who the figures on the side are.

Well, after looking at in in photoshop, and the picture supplied here that is zoomed, I think that the top left character is Carnage. each end of his hand indicate that there are some sword like things popping out. Also, the color is very mixed up with the black looking color, and if you look closely you can kinda see the white indicating the eyes. Actually as an aside wouldn't it be cool to have another Thor, probably as a unique, with his first click as his secret identity - Dr Donald Blake. You'd give him a high attack value and support for his first click. I think it would be interesting to play with a high cost medic (I don't count Dr Strange as it is almost pot luck whether he lands on his Support clicks). Do you keep him as a medic who could heal almost anyone (with his high attack value but zero damage), or do you push him to get to his useful "attacking" clicks (what you are paying the 150++ points for)?

I think this would be so interesting/good to play with - a maybe support piece who is a third to a half of your points.

I am somewhat on the fence. While I understand the reasoning for including Spiderman, Hulk, and Wolverine in each set, I do not wish to see any more of the 40 slots (28 REV + 12U) used to redo existing characters.

Stoked about Venom & Silver Surfer! Kind of like the Spiderman pose. Really hoping we do not get another Elektra, Daredevil, or even Thanos. Far too many unmade characters. I could put up with a new Capt America (U) to AE with Baron Zemo (his face is the MOE logo, he should be available as a figure). I really like the idea of Adam Warlock and Captain Mar-vell.

I guessed that it might be Thanos though I felt it was probably too small for the Titan. I would say it definitely, positively, just might be Living Laser (is that coming strong with it or what?).

I do believe you're confusing "Scarlet Spider" with "Howard Mackie." I want a Scarlet Spider. Wizard magazine can eat my ###, I thought his visual was awesome. The return of the clone was a great initial idea, but as Mackie has proven time and time again (see Mutant X, see also The Brotherhood) he has good ideas, but can't keep them going past about 6 issues. Before they knew it, Marvel was hip deep in clone saga. They could slog through it, or they could drop it. Dropping it would have pissed off the other half of the fans too, so they made the right call by slogging through.

Okay, it's time to drop some real work into this thread. I loaded up the box image in Photoshop so I could deform the image back to the correct shape and maybe get a better idea of who was who. Sadly I don't have anyplace handy to store the "corrected" images and the JPEG compression really makes it hard to tell (what I wouldn't give for this image in a high res tiff right now).

Top left: Those things stretching out at both sides are definitely his arms, not a cape to one side. There do not appear to be horns when I skew the image back. This figure appears to be a unique. The outfit is more purple and magenta than red and orange so I'm leaning toward Dormammu but he really isn't clear. FWIW, to rule out some guesses, it definitely is not Thanos, the Living Laser, or the Unicorn since the colors of the outfit are completely wrong for them.

Top right: Definitely a charging pose; right arm back, left arm down to punch, and both legs in a run. Since he's grey and does appear to have a horn I'm going Rhino.

Middle left: It's Loki. No question in my mind about it. It does look funny deformed like that but when you shift the pixels you can clearly see that it's Loki. Funny headgear with an open face, green and yellow outfit, dramatic cape: this is so Loki it's not even funny.

Middle right: I don't even think there's an arguement about who this one is.

Bottom: It's Spidey. It does look like Venom when you're zoomed out but there's red and blue pixels in there.

Funny circle at the very bottom: No clue, but that image is a hand turning a figure. There just isn't enough information to tell what figure that is and no matter how many times I tell my computer to enhance it for some reason it doesn't get any better. :) It, BTW, is not Daredevil's face.

you know, after looking at the top right, I'm less convinced its Rhino. It just doesn't seem right, although that was my first guess. As to top left, it is Thanos. The color scheme matches perfectly. The only question is whether he's too small, but I don't even think this is the case. I'm still betting on Thanos until someone proves me wrong. The costume and colors coincide too close for me to believe its anyone else.

I don't know if anyone remembers,but in preveiws before the explosion set came out, they showed a pic that included iron fist (that wasn't in that set) so it is possible that he got bumped into this set.....i can't see anything really in the color pic and have no real intrest in iron fist, just remembered seeing iron fist in the explosion preveiws, just a thought

We still need Cosmic Spidey that would be great he could fly and go toe to toe with thanos. We got four arm Spidey but we still need Man-Spider, Spider-Carnage, Spider-Man 2099, and Spider-Man Unlimited. Everyone that wants a Spidey in fantastic four outfit with a bag on his head mod him yourself. That fig will never be made since he has no special powers he is still spidey.
I do not believe elektra is a big gun just because of the daredevil movie marvel tries to shove her down are throats we have Elektra assasin fig there is nothing else to make stop. You can only make her in a differnt colored gi so many times and expect people to want her.

My opinions:

Top Left - NOT Thanos. No way. Don't even see a resemblence. After looking at it myself my best bet is (like someone said) Living Laser. Fits the game well (RCE and multiple arrows) and an Iron Man villain. Obscure but not TOO obscure. Just like Boomerang and Klaw. Colors are close as well.

Top Right - Rhino. The pose makes it too obvious and when I zoom in all I see is grey except for that tip (probably the horn). Pose is way too odd for someone like Mysterio.

Middle Left - My most confusing. After several looks it's gotta be either Loki or maybe Diablo. Loki makes more sense at first character-wise but Diablo makes more sense gamewise probably.

Middle Right - Captain Mar-vell. No question.

Bottom - Spidey. No question. I thought it was Venom at first but upon closer inspection his outstretched "arm" is just leapin' Spidey's leg from a different angle.

And Howard Mackie hasn't been without good points. The Ghost Rider everyone is always creaming about was written by him.

Well you can definently see a red team symbol on the base of the Rhino/Misterio so its either Brotherhood or Sinister Syndicate so, my guess is no matter what its one of these guys or someone in their calibre that people want to see. Carnage wouldn't have SS team ability in my opinion since he wouldn;t really work on a team. Hydro0Man it could be as well, but its definently a Spidey or X-Men villian, and I can't think of an X-Men villian that would fit that mold.

First of all - thanks for the post/images - most appreciated.


Nice to have confirmation in writing and pictures of Venom, Mar-vell, Surfer, Brood, et al.

As to the UCOs (Unidentified Clixing Objects) on the box, and these opinions were reached before reading anyone else's suggestions:

Top left: Initial thought was DORMAMMU straight off but further inspection suggests a lack of flames around the head, so the obvious other candidate for that colour scheme is BARON ZEMO. Living Laser (original) and Shocker have costumes that could fit the bill style-wise but the colour scheme seems wrong. Ditto for Thanos who would also have to have lost a few hundred pounds of cosmic flab.

Top right: Initial thought was RHINO as a) it looks grey (sorry, gray for those of youacross the pond), looks as if it is in a fearsome charging pose, there's a hint of a horn (oo-er missus) and the figure (in relation to its base) looks a large/bulky character. The arguments for MYSTERIO are
sound, however to me the colour/size isn't quite right but more importantly we always tend see MYSTERIO in a stood-still enigmatic pose rather than getting involved in a slugfest if he can help it. Having said that. I hope MYSTERIO's in the set but designed more in line with his comic image.

Middle left: Tough one. Thought long and hard about this. Predominantly GREEN characters. LOKI would be nice but I'd expect more trademark yellow in the costume. DIABLO would be nice but ditto for purple. The immediate all-green types who spring to mind are TITANIUM MAN (fig surely too small) and - where my money is (tentatively) MAXIMUS THE MAD.

Whatever - it's already shaping up for a must-have set and I can't wait for more glimpses-to-come.

I think I've read all 200+ posts here and I was going to keep my mouth shut but I might as well weigh in here. It seems no one is disagreeing that the box shows Captain Mar-vell. The only question is whether it is the Genis-vell Captain Marvel or the Mar-Vell Captain Marvel. It looks to me like Mar-vell but only time will tell.

The one that everyone says is Loki I can't make out for the life of me. No matter how hard I try I just can't make heads or tails of it.

The bottom left is either Spidey or Venom and quite frankly, I don't care which it is. We know they are both in the set so bring it on. The only point of contention should be that if it is Venom and he is an R/E/V then it still leaves room for Spidey to be a unique.

The top right looks like Rhino but I have to agree with a lot of the other people on this board that it is Mysterio.

As for the top left, the one that people variously think is Thanos, Carnage, etc. When I first looked at the pic before I read any of these posts I thought it was the Living Laser. I'm still pretty sure that it is him. The colors look right to me and the pose and the horns etc.

Well that's my two cents. Nothing really new to say but I had a couple of minutes. I can't wait for this set already.

the 5 figures on the side of the box (forget about the one being turned at the bottom, not enough detail)

1) Arms outstretched at the top. I'm curently thinking Zemo but only 5% sure.

2) 'Charging' at top right. Mysterio. 75% sure

3) Middle left. Diablo 60% sure

4) Middle Right : Mar-Vell, 95% sure

5) Bottom: Spiderman 99% sure

I think that the "Mysterio" could actually be Cloak from Cloak and Dagger. Just another option to throw out there - I don't think Mysterio's cape is all that raggedy looking, although the dome is very convincing....

Ive looked at the pic with some fractal software and photoshop, top left is thanos, top right is rhino, below thanos is very tough to see, but we think it could be manthing. next is cap mar-vel and spiderman bottom fig could be ironfist but wouldnt bet on that one. we took the old thanos from inf. chal. and looked at the photo and old figure and it look like a very good match posibly his one fist has a glove.

What I can't figure out is why anyone thinks it's Rhino. All the Rhino arguments amount to "Clearly it's Rhino. I blew it up 10^6 times in Better Than Your Photoshop. It's gray." No pictures, no diagrams. Pro Mysterio arguments isolate the piece, blow it up and re-post it for everyone to see. They (Retardog) post diagrams pointing out just what parts appear to be what on his costume. I'm sorry, but I don't see a horn Someone, for the love of god, point out this "horn." Further, the mold is way too thin to be Rhino. And the coloring? IT'S A BAD, PIXELATED SCAN! The coloring on the original is too dark to make out.

And that bottom piece? SPIDER-MAN! IT'S SPIDER-MAN FOR CHRISSAKE! It's the exact same pose, only at a different angle....and just like Mysterio, THE COLORING ON THE ORIGINAL IS JUST DARK!

Guys, wait until you get the flyer. The RHINO fig has his fist up behind him. There are two little white horns, and a scrunched up face underneath 'em. Yeah, it looks too thin, but the image is distorted.

The Spidey on the side of the box is indeed a Veteran. That means Venom will be the Unique. Argh, another Nightcrawler.

I highly suspect the face with the horns pushing against the left side of the box is Daredevil, not Belasco.

*sigh* It's not Rhino, people. You see that thing on his head? Yeah, it's chrome, like a ball bearing. Go dig one out, and you'll see that light reflects off of it the same way. The pose looks like he's standing there with one arm raised. The "leg" is his cape, as jhfrail pointed out, and it swirls around him. But, what the hell do I know? I don't have an uberfractal photo enhancement program like they do in the movies.
