Welcome to the Weekly Indy Comics Review Thread!

Every week we'll put up a "sticky" thread like this one so people can review and discuss the current weeks Indy comics.

The threads will stay at the top of the Indy Comics forum from Wednesday afternoon until the next Wednesday morning, after which time they'll be "unstuck" and return to their chronological spot in the forum, to be replaced by the current week's thread. Each thread will be marked with the ! icon.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider #33

This books new creative team continues to rock on all cylinders. All sorts of baddies are after Lara for the last Obscura painting to raise the dead. Werner Von Croy (Lara's Lex Luthor), makes his comics debut in this arc and appears to be killed. Death is rarely the end in this series though, and one should always look over one's shoulder.

The new writer James Bonny seems to have given Lara back her English nature, as opposed to cliche sayings. You actually hear her accent while reading the dialogue now. This is also hands down the best art Tony Daniel has done since Spawn. Great action sequences as well as quiet moments. Not to mention this latest cover. Simple but oh my!

This book has always been a fun action adventure read that doesn't get it's props, and it has just gotten even better. We're only two issues into the new run, so jump on board.

SMAX #2

"You will never forget this next moment." - Morningbright the Dragon

If you haven't done yourself the favor of reading Top Ten, I'd highly recommend dropping whatever it is you're doing, and running out and see if you can get it in back issues or in collected form.

Top Ten is the story of a world where every inhabitant is superhuman, but not a superhero. Top Ten is the name of the police precinct which is home to such flavorful police officers as Girl 1, Erma Geddon, and King Peacock.

Of course, my favorite character from the first series was Jaffs Macksun, aka: SMAX, an invulnerable, blue-skinned officer with a very impressive Force Blast like power. Moody and brooding, he contrasted well with the new recruit, Toy Box, a young woman named Robyn who had adopted her fathers box of miniature toy weapons.

SMAX picks up where the first series left off, with Robyn and Jaffs heading to Jaffs' home dimension, of which he never speaks. Robyn comes to find that SMAX comes from a fairy tale world grown old, with drug selling trolls, and con artist elves. And dragons. Issue #1 lays out some of the background of the world, but Issue #2 finally explains SMAX's origin in full, including why he fled his home and found his way to Top Ten.

An excellent read by writer Alan Moore.

Smax # 2:
I gotta agree with webhead on this one...great book. I wish it were Top Ten but I will settle for some of the characters in a good book versus none of the charactrers in a no book.

Sojourn # 27:
This is one of the best CrossGen books on the stands..heck, it is one of the best books on the stands overall! Fans of Mage Knight, Dungeons & Dragons, Conan, etc.. should find the back issues and get caught up. The art is fantastic!

B.P.R.D. Night Train #1:
Awesome story. I love the ghost story/In Search Of feel to the Hellboy universe. It also kind of reminds me of Ripley's Believe It Or Not narrated by Jack Palance, of course.
