Hopefully, I can help and answer some questions and point you in the right direction.

First, playing online. There are two general ways.

1) An Instant Messaging Game. AIM is preferred as it's got an online die roller built into their chat rooms. The gist of it? You and an opponent get together at some pre-designated time/date and play via the AOL Instant Messenger (or Yahoo or MSN if you prefer). You play just as if you were both in the same room, using the Heroclix rules. Pretty simple, eh? Maps? Figure Managers? Email die rollers? Read further...

2) Play by Post (PBP for short). In this format, you and an opponent trade moves via posting messages in the forums. Head on over to the PBP area here on HCRealms and you'll see what I mean. These games take much longer as you're playing someone with an entirely different schedule than you do. You post a message like "Looking for a Game" in the forums. State any particular rules/point values/themes you'd like to play by and wait for a response. When an opponent writes you back, you start a thread and the game is on. Well, at least you have an opponent to begin a game. Now for the particulars (whether you're playing an AIM game or PBP).

Maps: There are several sites that have excellent maps for Heroclix. They're easy to use, fully interactive (i.e. there are chits for the figs and objects and the like) and span the wide variety of maps available both through WizKids and specialty maps. Creationmatrix.com is great for maps. They've got all the Marvel and DC maps online, ready to use. Another good site is c_abalcity.com. Remove the _ in the name, if not, it comes up as ######### here on HCRealms. They've got some of the standard maps as well as some custom ones.

Dice: Gotta have dice! Here, you have 3 option. First, you can use the "Honor Rolling" system. That's where you and your opponent roll your own dice at your computer and trust the other to post their actual rolls. Second, there's the email dice rollers. Sites such as http://www.geocities.com/cchristelander/altdice.html which allow you to submit die rolls and have the results sent to your opponents email address. The third option is to play at a site like creationmatrix.com where within their PBP area, they have an online die roller built within the message boards themselves. Makes PBP A LOT easier. Might also explain why the creationmatrix PBP area is much more busy (read: poplular) than the one here at HCRealms. Check it out, you'll be amazed. Anyways, that's how you get past the dice hurdle.

Figure Manager: Chances are, you're going to be playing an opponent who is using figs that you don't have. Gotta know what his fig has on it's clicker, right? There are several Figure Managers that you can use, both online and off, which makes playing an online game easier. Again, creationmatrix.com has an online manager for playing games. You could also create yours and your opponents team with the team builder here at HCRealms and keep track that way. c_abalcity.com has an online manager as well, but I haven't used it, personally.

OK, so those are some of the basics. With regards to PBP, read through some of the threads to see how the game goes, what kind of shorthand is used, and the kind of communication that is common during a game. Remember, in PBP, your opponent isn't sitting there across the table. Sometimes you've got to be OVERLY clear as to what you're doing (i.e. team abilities and which figs are using what on which turn...stuff like that). Bottom line is, it's fun.

Hopefully, that gets you both an idea of what "online gaming" consists of and where to go to next. It's not the end all, be all answers to the universe, but should be enough to get you guys into trouble;)
