Hi there.

My retired dad and I have pooled our resources to make 3D maps for HeroClix. The project is still underway but there is enough material to start bragging about it at this point.

I could have done a better painting job but they're certainly ok to play with. ;)

We will try to sell some at my venue and through my Web Site.

Your comments are welcome.

Thanks!

Well folks,

Looks like I won't be able to respond to your comments when they come. I have to head out to the hospital with my wife. She is having contractions. This may or may not be another drill.

Until later...

Sly.

Nice 3d maps.
Best wishes with the wife.

Great work, one of the nicest 3D maps I've seen for HeroClix. Congrats on the addition to your family (if it isn't a false alarm)!

I love what you have done so far. One quick question tho.
Instead of cardboard and foamboard, ave you ever thought
of using hardboard. At Builder's Square near my house, I
buy 2' by 4' sheets of hardboard for $1.80 each, and a caulk
tube full of construction adhesive costs about $2.50 and holds
as well as nails. Just a thought on how to make them more saleable/shipable and they are faster to build that way also.
Cut the walls and ceilings, cut a #### load of 1"x1"x1" blocks
for support. Squirt some construction adhesive on the blocks
and stick the walls to them.
Not trying to downplay what you've done, it looks awesome.

10/14/2003, 00:58
Hey I'm back! It was a false alarm.

You're right. As soon as I saw my streets start curving, I figured it would have made more sense to use a different base.

I will fix this by gluing them on hardboard in the near future.

My intent was to ship the buildings but let the clients choose to glue them on a base or not. Some may decide to just put them on a map or something. For those who want to do like I did, I will highly recommend hardboard.

Thanks for the tip!

Sly.

I was speechless. You did a great job. I was thinking about makeing a 3-d map but i doubt ill do as nearly as well as you did. I like the idea with the lamp posts.

cyberdragon
10/20/2003, 09:14
Thanks for the kind words!

I made those maps for my son and myself, first and foremost, but I appreciate the praise. My little 10 seconds of glory!

I must point out that my dad played a great part by making the buildings. I designed them, painted them and added some details but he has developped his own method for making the buildings from corrugated cardboard. They're light and sturdy. Quite playable as well.

About the lamp posts. They were made from wood, of course, but also from electrical wires and tylenol pills (for the lights).

I plan to add more details to to the maps. Such as fire hydrants, mail boxes, etc. More objects to use or hide behind, ust like in real life.

Cheers!

That's a great job you and your dad have done. This is what I have been saying all along that a game like heroclix that depends on all 3 dimensions should have a 3 dimensional layout. Are you looking for building ideas?

cyberdragon
10/20/2003, 11:46
Thanks!

Yes. I am always looking for ideas. I sometimes take my digicam with me while running errands in case I see something cool. ;)

I have 2 more 'lots' to fill on my existing map. One big 24" office building is in progress. So ideas for those 2 remaining vacant lots are welcome.

We are also looking for ideas for the kits we intend to sell. We now have the garage and my dad is converting some already-made 2-story houses with balconies (which should be fun!) for HeroClix.

The kits we will try to sell will typically be smaller than the big ones I have made for myself. The biggest issue is shipping costs. Although light, big buildings will occupy too much volume.

So yes, ideas and suggestions are welcome! :)

looks great, one of the best I've seen. have you playtested it yet ? How well do the figures stand on uneven squares or on squares with foliage

cyberdragon
10/20/2003, 12:41
Yes. We playtested, my son and I, last week. Again over the weekend with my cousin, an experienced player.

We've adopted some variations on the rules, which I think makes more sense, but is not yet set in stone:

1) vehicles and other obstacles such as bushes are considered hindering terrain. Duh!;

2) sidewalks are not considered hindering (think about the one dividing the boulevard where the lamp posts are). On a standard HC map, it would be hindering;

3) stealthed characters are only hidden when standing behind (not above) hindering terrain. If you are standing on top of a car, how can you be considered hidden? A possible exception to this: you may be standing anywhere around a tree with high branches that you can get under and be considered hidden;

4) when flying to the top of a 3-story building, each extra story beyond the first costs you an extra movement square (similar to going up a ladder). Same for long range attacks. Standing on top of a 3-story building turns your range 10 into a range 8 if attacking someone on the ground.

We've done ok so far with those rules.

I have tried to avoid uneven squares as much as possible so this has not been much of a problem. And with the house rules above, figs don't need to stand on bushes. We'd be hard pressed to do it in real life anyway! :ermm:

Figs do not stand easily on cars (especially on the new beetle). That's a bit of a limitation right now.

The onyl question I have is how much painted because I have no painting talent.

Here are a few suggestions.

Watertower
fire/police station
house (small) with fence and bushes/trees
burnt out building (could be a cool looking building)
library
city parking garage, with lots of open space and a few levels

Good luck, I'm sure I or other posters will come up with more.:)

Incredible job. You and your family have it looking good. Try considering this for a 3d house rule; after the first story, add a click of damage for every 2 stories when knocked off the top of a building.

cyberdragon
10/20/2003, 13:39
We have yet to determine our pricing structure. I expect to offer painting services for an extra 10-15$, depending on the kit and/or level of detail required.

The kits should be in the 15-25$ range plus S&H.

Take this with a grain of salt, though. It's still all up in the air.

cyberdragon
10/20/2003, 13:47
Thanks for the suggestions.

Watertower

Good idea. I thought about that a bit too as a piece to put on rooftops. Very "New Yorky". What's stopping me though is the need for a flat rooftop. Water tower tops tend to be conical in shape.

Fire/Police Station

Yep. Probably Police Station so we can put the GCPD figs to good use.

house (small) with fence and bushes/trees

My dad's current retrofit project would fall in this category I believe.

burnt out building (could be a cool looking building)

Good one! I like that. I'll be doing some thinking on that one...

library

Another interesting one. With Gothic-like structures. Probably more challenging but worth it I guess. again.

city parking garage, with lots of open space and a few levels

We could probably fit such a structure within a 16x16 HC grid. Especially with multiple levels. Hmmm.

I will gladly pay it. i am not that creative so I am glad that others are. This would be great for tournaments and I think you could make a great deal of money off of this.

I suggest you PM me so we can discuss this further.

As for making money, I'd be gladly surprised if it really sold that well. Not because the quality or usability isn't there but because people may not be willing to pay for that. That's what I have yet to find out.

My real hope is that my dad can make a few extra bucks during his forced retirement.

We figured out the price for the garage kit. This is the first kit to be "mass" produced: 25$ unpainted or 35$ painted, plus S&H. Prices are in US and I hope the Canadian dollar stops going up soon. :p

At this time, this kit seems to be more work because of all the small wooden parts so this may end up being the most expensive one.

We're learning as we go...

I should be able to post all the details to the web site soon.

I like this idea, and hope that WK gets a look at all the 3D maps being made online, and gets to doing them too.

Some suggestions I have~

A Back Alley. Maybe have two of the multi-story buildings, with an alley in-between, with trashcans, and junk piled up in a corner of the alley. A great place for Thugs to hang out. (Also good for the generic punks & gangbangers I've been working on.) And, Spawn if they ever make him.

Also, look through old comics and try to make some of the more usefull areas like the Danger Room/Xavier's School, The Bat-Cave (complete with big friggin' coin, and a toy dino from Wal-Mart, maybe), or if you get really bored, you can find the lay-out for the old Baxter Building online or in the old Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe

You know, I'd have to be an architect to make those projects! Alot of work there.

Seriously, if I made buildings or structures such as the Batcave, Baxter Building, Daily Bugle, etc. I'd have to keep them for myself. I am quite sure those are trademarked and Marvel and DC wouldn't like us making a bit of money on their backs.

Still, they're interesting ideas.

The back alley is more... up my alley. ;)

I think they look great and also would be willing to buy them. I run tournaments and would love to have a 3d map for certain tournaments. Keep us all updated!

I have been trying to make a 3d map, except I was using foam board and it kept curling....pain in my butt

cyberdragon
10/27/2003, 22:14
Thanks MSU!

I also used foam board... and it curled. But we will glue it on hardboard to fis that.

I will not include the base in my kits soi people can decide how they want to use them. It will also simplify S&H. I will strongly recommand people use hardboard if they want to make a base for the kits.

I will post here every time some change occurs on the site. :)

1 - Are you going to sell them more than one, (ie 5 street lights) or single, or as a package (where you get one of each accessory)

cyberdragon
03/17/2004, 08:25
Hi Kon-El,

Yes. That's the idea. We may include some street lights with the appropriate bases and we may not. But one thing's for sure, we'll make kits of the different accessories and sell them bundled.

Thanks for your interest. If yuo want to keep track of ur progress, PM me your email and I will add you to my mailing list.

Hey Cyberdragon,

I have checked out your site from you're posted link but almost all of the images come up with the small icon with an "X" in it. Is it that you're images are on your server so that when you are not on-line we cant see them? I am a fellow 3D map builder and always love looking at others work. Is there something on my end that I need to do or do you have a different site that I may see your images? Check out my attached JPEG to see a closeup of one of the maps that I have created. Let me know what you think:)

cyberdragon
03/19/2004, 10:26
Bonjour Spidey8,

Strange about the pics on my site. I've had some people mentioning this to me but whenever I test using on of my PCs, the PC atmy comic shop, etc. it comes out ok.

I have a provider so the stuff isn't loaded locally. If the web site comes up, the pics should too since they're in the same location.

If you're using Dial-up, it may take a bit of time for them to load. Other than that, it should work. (?!)

I took a look at your pic and it was small but I could see what look slike a huge under-construction skys####er like those often seen in comics. Nice stuff!

spidey8
03/19/2004, 10:35
Thanks Cyberdragon,

I am actually connected T1 line, but I am using a Mac......so maybe therein lies the issue? After I did post before, I did find some pictures of yours that did come up........kudos to you and your dad as well! What is the major material that you work with, it looks like chip board or cardboard? I work with foam/gator/ultra board, but I work for a printing company....so that makes my maps easier to create:p I don't think that I could ever mass produce these like you and yours do.....mine is more of a side hobby. I am currently working on interchangable interior buildings ( 12"x12") , so that each time you play you can set the board up differently. Once I finsh most of these, I will start a new thread I think.......that and hopefully have a server or website setup to boot:grin:

cyberdragon
03/19/2004, 10:41
The kits are made of wood and corrugated cardboard. I wouldn't call this mass production although my dad uses templates to at least make a few at a time.

I haven't thought about interior maps yet. Not sure if and how it would work. We still have alot of ideas for exterior ones though. :)

Hopefully we can sell a few and justify the effort.

Let me know when you get that web site up!

spidey8
03/19/2004, 11:09
Well I would consider your stuff mass production compared to my original one of a kind:p
The two complete maps that I have created were both outside, so I am trying my hand at interiors.........which is taking forever. I'm making all the interior walls and decorating them as well, so it brings a whole new problem into the mix:confused:
I've been attempting to get all my digital shots organized and put onto a website, but as of yet haven't ( wife dosen't want me to pay anythnig for a server or web page), so it's been rough going. With my latest venture, I may have turned her decision though.::)
I'll let you know if/when I get the site up and running!

cyberdragon
03/22/2004, 11:37
FYI - pictures of a few accessories were added to the site.

spidey8
03/22/2004, 13:40
I really like your bus stop and phone booth designs!:knockedou I couldn't tell in the picture if the bus stop had glass or not like the phone booth. Did you use plexi-glass for that? I am about to attempt to make an atrium and I was going to use plexi-glass for the walls, but if you have found something else that works better.....I'm all ears:grin:
The streetlights are great too......but how do you get them to stay upright?

cyberdragon
03/22/2004, 13:49
The booth and bus shelter both have 'glass' windows. Recycle all your plastic packages and you'll do fine. :)

The street lights will be inserted in the wooden bases through drill hole. This way they can be removed and used to bash people by the HC bricks.

:p

cyberdragon

An overview section was added on the site showing a full map. A picture of the park becnh was also added in the accessories section. :)

That could be an issue, yes. I built my site using FrontPage and it seems to work in different location I tested.

I'm not sure why it wouldn't work from a Mac but it's the only lead I have at this point.

Strange...

Hey Cyberdragon,

Nice work!! I really like how the streetlights add to the overall theme of your map:) I read in a earlier post that you wanted to play test them ( you had said before that they tendend to wobble ) and I was qurious of the results. Did they work well or did they become more of a hassle if they kept falling down?
Either way the map looks great!!
Back to one of our earlier posts about the windows, I ended up using plexiglass for my interior atrium walls. The modeling glue that I had held up fantastic and the sturdyness of them was what I needed for their overall durability.
Still working on my interior maps AND the website to post them on..........but I have a sample of one of the ones that I have completed.
Let me know what you think:cool:

cyberdragon
03/29/2004, 13:23
Wow! This looks great! The stairs look metallic and I like your wall designs. Show me more! :p

My street lights wobbled but my dad's are quite stable. :o

His are made entirely of wood and we use drill holes to insert them into the bases, which are also made of wood. They are still removable and can be used as objects but they remain in place much better than my earlier ones.

I am actually impressed with the quality of the work my dad has done on these 3D maps. :knockedou

I knew he enjoyed miniatures and models but these 3D maps provided him with a focus and, using my specs, he came up with great stuff!

He and his dad and son do GREAT work!!!!

My one friend and I used the 3-D Buildings/maps over the weekend. Really added that touch of 'realism' to the game.

I'll have to figure out how to snap a picture and put it on the Web.

Or, if anyone wants, just PM me your email and I will send the pic directly to you.
