View Full Version : Near Tulsa? Come Play in the Mega-Huge After-Christmas Event!
BrotherMagneto
12/12/2003, 13:59
What: A mega-huge, 300-point constructed HeroClix event (using house rules for force construction). This is a charity event, and entry requires a minimum of three canned food goods, three boxed food goods, or a combination of the two.
Where: Wizard's Asylum, Tulsa, Oklahoma. For more information, go here: http://www.wizkidsgames.com/eventdetail.asp?eventid=265706
When: Sunday, December 28th, 1:00 PM
Prizes: Lots. Grand Prize is a complete set of Indy HeroClix, including all EU exclusives. Other prizes may include, but are not limited to, figure sets of previous expansions, hard-to-find LEs, and more.
What to Bring: Canned goods! There may be a prize for those who donate the most. The goal will be to keep the spirit of the holiday season alive and well, even after the holidays.
Anything Else? Sign up early so we can plan accordingly. Come ready to have fun! I'll be on hand to answer questions, and who knows, maybe there will be a surprise or two!
If you're going to be in the Tulsa area after Christmas - or even if you're in Little Rock, or Springfield, or Oklahoma City - come on down and click for charity!
Note: this is NOT a regional championship, it's an event for fun and charity.

Awesome! Count me in! This should be a blast!
I'd like to see all the people that went to WWT come and play. Remember, Tulsa has the #2 Indy player... sounds like a challenge to me!
Is there any way to send canned goods even if you can't go to play?
Funky Jett
12/12/2003, 17:04
That would be awesome! Excellent idea, thugit! Hopefully Bro_Mags or LS will give an answer soon.
Maybe post an addy of where we can send donations if we can't attend?

Thugit, you are awesome!
The venue is
Wizards Asylum Comics And Games

Tulsa Oklahoma 74133
We would be happy to accept any donations like that.
Larry
Superb. I'll make sure the people at my venue see this!!
Great idea, BrotherMagneto! (Although I'm still miffed that your article about thugs didn't mention me)
Funky Jett
12/12/2003, 17:14
I would suggest you mark it on the outslde of the package with something like "Christmas HeroClix Tournament" or "Food Donation" so the helpers at the venue will know what it is.
That's a good idea, Funky. I was going to write "Explosive", but I like your idea better.
Funky Jett
12/12/2003, 17:20
You can write that directly on all the cans of Spam you send...

Wow, Thugit, that is one of the coolest things I've read in a long time! Thank you SO MUCH!!!
Thanks, but let's not be too nice to me.... I have a reputation to maintain.

WHAT'S THIS? An 'event' actually being hosted in good ol' Tulsa, OK? This can't be...

I have been looking forward to this for several weeks, ever since I saw the flyer @ my local venue in Edmond. My brother and I plan to be there. It will be great to get to see some of the other members from HCRealms there. Thanks for sponsoring this, Brother Magneto.

Straining, I sent you a pm, if you could get back to me in a few minutes, I'd appreciate it!
(I'm leaving work in just a few minutes)

No problem, malephoenix! Hope to see you (and many others) there.
Remember, sign up on the WizKids website so we can plan for space, etc. The earlier you sign up, the better, because we'll need to know if we need more than one Judge.
BrotherMagneto, I'm trying to come up with a way to sponsor a contest for the person who sends the most stuff on the hcrealms side of things.... Is there anyway I could contact you so that we can make sure everything gets to you, that way we can verify who wins? If you could send me a pm or contact me through email, I would really appreciate it.

I also plan on coming from OKC to attend with at least 1 or 2 friends in tow.
As to donating canned goods. I personally think it'd be a better idea not to mail them to Tulsa if you're out of town, but rather donate it locally to a local food bank. The money you save on postage can be used to purchase more food to donate, or even be a monetary donation.
Just my two cents.
theSHOWDOWN
12/13/2003, 01:05
Or you can just have people bring food instead of money if they want in order to enter local tournies.
You can host your own event and just use your personal collection or store prizes if you're really that interested in charity. I did something similar to that several years ago with Star Wars CCG and it worked out great.
But then again...I go door to door every week asking for food for food pantires (totally painless way to be an altruist)...
BrotherMagneto
12/13/2003, 04:24
I appreciate the thoughts, but I agree with Killowog and Showdown - use the Uniques and LEs to organize a food drive in your hometowns. If you get a bunch of players to come, invite a local TV station - it'll be great coverage for your venue. If you get your local players into doing it, a food drive event is a really great way to build the game community, too.
Again, thanks! Had I known how much interest there would be outside of the Tulsa area, I would have suggested other places organize these kinds of events a few months ago.
Also, there is a group in Pennsylvania that's doing a can drive called Day of 1000 Cans - they'll have megahuge events all day (for Star Wars, Magic, LotR, HeroClix, and every other game you can think of) and the goal is to raise cans for charity. If you're in the area, check them out - I don't have a link, but I'm sure they are on the web somewhere.
Well, I'll certainly try to be there. I know Jeff is gonna be hot for my blood after KOing his V Lobster Johnson on Wednesday! :p I'll have to request the day off from work now, though, so I'll get to that tomorrow.

How about instead of sending canned food down to Tulsa, we send money. It will be cheaper on postage and then they can go out an purchase a variety of items down there. That way they don't end up with 4000 cans of corn.
themark37
12/14/2003, 22:19
BTW Magneto or Straining, how do you get something like this setup?
BrotherMagneto
12/14/2003, 22:21
TheMark, it's a venue-supported event that I'm kicking some of my personal stuff as prize support for. The food drive part is easy - we just contacted a local charity, and they were happy to tell us what to do, and then we found a venue at which to hold it.
The "idea" part took longer than implementing it, I think. :)
Before I worked for WizKids, I was a Judge in Tulsa, so when I was coming home for the holidays, I thought "it'll be cool to see everyone," but I didn't have time to hit all the venues I played at, so we thought "let's get them all together for a huge event," and I thought "I've got this stuff that I'm not using," and we thought "let's make it a charity event," and it was born. :)

Do we know yet if there will be a prize for most good brought?

Giving some of your own stuff is really cool but I was wondering if you guys (Wizkids) have thought about doing something like this across the US/World?
BrotherMagneto
12/14/2003, 23:27
Yes, I'm hoping that we'll have a system in place next year to do much more of these - actually my event is kind of an unofficial "test" to see how well it goes over. :)
I'm only an OU fan when they don't royally screw up in the middle of a season. Which, is like, never. ;)

Yes, you can come if you are not signed up. You can also play if you are not presigned up. We will sign people up at the event. The reason we are asking for people to register ahead of time is so we have a general idea of how many people will be there. If only 3 people sign up and we have 100 show up there may be a problem. If 100 people sign up and we have 102 show up no big deal. But the event will not be limited to preregistration.
I look forward to meeting everyone.

Map Quest... mind if I laugh out loud? I mean, I use it too, but their sense of driving time is a little warped. It must be all those molasses roads between here and central Illinois...

Funky Jett you are correct, Having tons of people there made it very fun. I was able to play 4 people that I've never played before, that is the fun part for me. Each one of them had a different team with totally different playing styles.
Also, Where does everyone play, I'd like to play more but have to Judge most of the time. That was the first time I've played in 2 months.
I can be found at Mammoth Comics every Tuesday Night at 6:30 and Saturdays at The Game Shop. I don't get to play allot but come by and say hi.

MX, congrats on the win. I'm glad I didn't play you (I hate getting ran by firelord). This was a great tourney and I'd love to give a tip o the beanie to brother mags for setting it up.
I made a few stupid moves, accidentally broke the FCCF rule (and suffered 4 hits on Fatality for it), killed Ronan the Accuser, found out I hate Steel/wildcard/stealth teams, found out that Killer Frost may be a translucent sculpt (IF they have her in the next set), and had a great time.
Thanks again, and I hope I can make the next one.
(I also loved being mistaken for my son's brother. You guys mad a semi-old guy feel better and ruined my son's day :) )

12/29/2003, 00:37
yeah i had a very fun time too! although it was very interesting how that guy that rolled what 12 6's between 2 matches didn't win. Hmm i wonder why because maybe the judges made us use wizkids dice? Also that was a very very good idea to make everyone use em. I didn't speak up cause i remeber i did that once to this one guy and he posted it on worst sportsmanship ever. So yeah i let everyone else talk amongst themself's. Man i loved watching you play again chris! I heard about how you made that comeback at the very end. I might have played you or collin in the last match if that one guy didn't roll 6's all the time.
I still cannot believe how generous those guys where. the guy with the red hair looked like that guy from the partridge family. I don't know his name, and then i also look like eric foreman from that 70's show. So i guess there were 2 celeb look alikes. I had fun owww man i can't wait till you have another one of those! If we could get that kind of turn out, you never know who would win. So everyone come down to tulsa every weekend! I know you can kilowog! An hour and a 1/2 drive isn't too bad. Yeah right. I also was proud of chris that he got it. Now the dude that kind of spazes out when he didn't get the prize kind of freaked me out a bit. I mean it sounded like it was a life or death sort of thing.
anyway have fun oppening your packs of uk indy chris!
oh man how fun would that be to not know any of the people and there powers and just look through them all day long! Sucks for though chris cause if you don't get through em tonight you have to wait til what 6?ugh i would just take a half day off just to open em.
hey do you mind if you put up the standings for the final round? Oh that would be soo cool!

I had a great time. Was very glad to see everyone and even more glad to win the fellowship(complete set of Indy LEs). I didn't win a single match, had a perfect record of 0-4, so take that Goldluster! I told you I'd get last. :)
I played with loaded dice, but I loaded them on the 2 and the 3, got 5s all day. Oh well, it's just fun to play.
I wish I could come up every weekend. I hardly ever get to play, but the drive isn't exactly short(it's not too long, but not short) and the gas and tolls make for a not so cheap trip.
I ended up with a couple of Clobberin' Time LEs(would rather of had Cosmic Justice, but I'm a big DC fan) and then the Indy LEs so that more than makes up for the cost of the trip.
Thanks again to everyone that made it possible and to everyone that donated to the food bank. Good cause, good time and good prizes. What more can you ask for?

OK...Just a quick Update.
First: Thank you everyone, we had 24 players show up and although the cost was 3 cans/boxes each...We FILLED the food bank box to overflowing, and this was not a small box. Each and everyone of you are incredible and deserve a pat on the back for what you did yesterday. I would also like to thank Jimmy and Wizards Asylum for allowing us to hold the event at his store.
Second: Pictures and Final Standings will be posted by noon CST today. I have to do a little work while I am here today and that interferes with me screwing off as much as I would like.
Third: Brother Magneto is truely THE MAN. The winged Batman and Bat Sentry preview were a great treat.
Fourth: I am going to do everything in my power to make every event I do from now on as much fun.

Well, everybody...
I totally made out like a bandit yesterday. For the "Christmas" present from Mr. BroMagneto I got a Sue Storm, for the LE drawings I got an LE Fatality, and somehow ended up with fellowship which was a boxed set of Xplosion (very cool; the paint jobs are remarkably better than the boosters, for some odd reason...hmmm).
I think I had an excellent team (but, then again, I always thing that!:cheeky:) -- U Deathbird, V Psylocke, V Cheetah, V Johnny Alpha, V Paramedic, and E Abbey Chase -- but suffered from poor rolls and some serious tactical errors. I'm usually a pretty good player, but I had to play against alot of figs I was not used to playing, so I ended up making some pretty glaring errors in my third game (against a pleasant fellow with a R Ultron).
I also had my day ruined by a particular judge who thought my dad was my brother. Do I look like I collect Social Security??
I was also really nice to finally put some faces with some names on the boards.
So, everybody, thanks for a great time! Next time there's a big tourney within 2 hrs drive, I'll be there!

While I wasn't COMPLETELY embarassed, I came close. I went 2-2, but my victories were close while my losses were massive. I ended up in the bottom half. Oh well... I can't complain though. I snagged an LE Barbara Hershey and a Constipated... ok, Leaping Hulk (PSM mail-in). My son scored pretty big too. He won a full set of all the mail-in figures! Berserker Wolverine, OWAW Superman, Phasing Green Lantern, Leaping Hulk, Boon, Witchblade, and Arwyn! All sealed and in mint condition! Fantastic!!! Since we already had them, I figured he would want me to sell them on eBay for him, but instead, he traded Arwyn and Wolverine to score a Dormammu. Cool, all the way around!
I want to thank Borther Magneto, Larry, Jimmy, and the other players as well. It was a huge blast playing in that event! I wish it could happen more often! Hint, hint...

Goldluster,
If the guy with the 'loaded dice' is the one I think you're talking about, I can assure you that he wasn't using loads. He was using a set of my dice, heck the guy doesn't even own more than 5 clix. He always has to borrow pieces from myself and his brother.
He's the next to last person that would use loads (I'm the last).
I agree that it was a good idea to use wiz dice, but hopefully they will provide the dice at the start next time, thereby bypassing anyone mistaking luck (or beating the odds) for cheating.

I too had tons of fun! Perhaps next time we'll all meet in Norman...
I destroyed the Funky one in round one. Of course, gettting boxcars and giving six clicks of damage to Zatanna really helped out a lot. ;) It helped make LE Doom a little less terrifying.
The third round was lots of fun. I faced theSHOWDOWN (I am that "pleasant fellow with a R Ultron"--for all those who care, it was an all rookie team (except the E paramedic who must have paid off somebody to get on the team)). I still laugh at your Cheetah for running away from Black Panther after he landed a measley two clicks!! :)
MXStates has only me to thank. He wiped me clean in round four. Of course, he didn't get to keep his E Paramedic! Ten points to me!! :p If only I had seen the obviousness of TKing out Firelord... man did I feel stupid. Still, we had lots of fun. Quicksilver and Firelord both got snake eyes (back to back). The final lash came from LE Elektra... boxcars.
I hope to see all of you again. I might even post here more often.

I'm thinking about maybe trying to host a state championship in April. We can get people from all over the state to come and fight for bragging rights. Not sure yet, gotta check out some things, but if there's enough interest then we can easily do it.

In all fairness, I would like to point out that I thought your dad looked a lot younger than he was...not than you did.

yeah i had a very fun time too! although it was very interesting how that guy that rolled what 12 6's between 2 matches didn't win. Hmm i wonder why because maybe the judges made us use wizkids dice? Also that was a very very good idea to make everyone use em. I didn't speak up cause i remeber i did that once to this one guy and he posted it on worst sportsmanship ever.
I don't think this is a fair assumption. "That guy," arrogent and annoying he may be, but loaded dice? Please....
I had the same odds with my dice pre-Wiz dice, but they were all 2s. My point is that odds are odds, and with the amount of rolls made in the course of a game, 12 6s isn't impossible or even improbable.
The Wizkids dice seemed loaded to me; everyone I talked to had a hard time rolling above a 6, myself included.

I'd just like to say that if either Chris or I had still lived in Moore, then we'd win the farthest drive too. We missed it by 2 miles or so. 8-)
That's OK, we're happy with what we got.

Well I had a great time despite my dismal performance. I just didn't have much time to prepare since I had gotten back from Boulder, CO the previous day. My opponents played well and I didn't. Could have been worse, but a few bonehead moves and forgetting to use my TA's properly ended up costing me.
But hey I can complain as I walked away with a LE Rhino and won a Marvel Map set in the drawing. It was a blast and I hope to see more nationally sponsored tournaments in the Tulsa area. Thanks to everyone that helped set this up and congrats to the players that did well.
Very cool pics and very cool putting up the final standings.
Thanks to everyone who participated.

hey guys i'm not accusing you of loaded dice. Ohter guys were. I'm just the one that spoke up about it.anyway sorry if i offended anyone. Plus that second match i had was a very fun but frustrating game. let me tell ya i'll never attack a danger girl again! oh and how did you make loaded dice. Kilowog gave me some idea that you can somehow make loaded dice from regular ones. hey man i didn't mean to say you were cheating. It's cool if you were or weren't i don't care. It was fun just playing against new faces and seing what they had to offer. Next time i'll keep my mouth shut every where.
and again i can't wait til the next one and play more players!

Don't be quiet about it. If you even suspect something is not right, let someone know. Noone really gets offended by it, or they shouldn't. I didn't like changing dice, but I ended up doing better with the new dice, so it was fine with me. 8-)
I don't really know how to load dice. I assume it's adding weight to the opposite side of what you want to land up, but not sure how to do it.

goldluster,
I wasn't saying that you should be quiet. You did the right thing by bringing it up at the tourney. I was just sticking up for 'arrogant boy' and assuring you that he wasn't using loads.
I went against a guy once that I suspected of using loads and I suggested that we both use the same dice, his or mine, his choice. He chose mine (and still won).
Never be afraid of standing up against wrong. If you do, THEY have won.

I think it all worked out for the best, The Judges did the right thing and put the item to rest. At the worlds you play with Wizkids dice or you don't play, They give them to you at the tourney. If you make the finals you get a new set the following day to play that day. It's all good.
Tip of the Day: look deeply into firelords eyes, because Quicksilver is coming. Firelord hit only 4 times all day, I use him to keep people looking at him. Quicksilver was my killer. It works everytime.
thespiderfly, That was a cool battle, You had some figures I had not seen played so I was a little worried about their dials. It all worked out, but your right if I hadn't got to your Jean Gray things would not have worked out so good.

Hey guys, I just wanted to post really quickly and say that I had a great time! You guys showed what a great bunch we Okies are, and it was great to play with my old friends and meet so many new people, too. Larry did an awesome job running the event, and Jimmy was a prince for letting us use his space and donating items for prizes.
So, thanks to one and all for coming! also, if anyone knows how to get a hold of David Price, please drop me a PM (his email address would be fine). He had some questions for me and I have some answers. :)

Hey, Brother Magneto; just PMed you.
Also, I wanted to throw in my thanks to all the guys who made this tournament possible. For those of you who weren't able to make it (if anyone besides attendees are reading this), the way we've said how much fun it was really is an understatement. Hoping for an even better turn out next time! Congrats to Chris and the Fellowshippers, plus another HUGE thanks to those who provided the extremely cool LEs for prizes that we ALL got! THAT was amazing!
See everyone next time.

Alright. Time to revisit this thread;
BrotherMagneto, I cannot reach you through PM here or through email. PLEASE let me know how I can get emails to you. If anyone else knows, I'd appreciate some assistance...
I heard that if you post a thread that says 'magneto carps his pants' he'll come a runnin'.
