I kinda dig Jack Staff.
Kabuki is very good, i can't give that enough praise.
Mike Allred's Madman and/or The Atomics is all good.
I love Planetary, but don't know if that counts.
Powers is good.
i dig Liberty Meadows (and if you like that i can safely recommend 'Get Fuzzy' from your newspaper).
Hellboy stuff of course.
and if yo like Anime but aren't really into anime stories, track down some issues of Gun####h Cats. that's really good.

You might have had an H in there instead of a M by accident making it Guns#ith instead of Gunsmith.

I agree that Kabuki is top knotch. Only problem is, there haven't been new issues in ages. What's been published is colected in graphic novels, and you absolutely have to read them in order: Circle of Blood then Masks of the Noh. After that they become very artsy and conceptual, which I didn't mind, and if you like that kind of stuff, too, read Skin Deep and Metamorphosis in that order. Scarab is the final volume so far.
I read 2000AD religiously, but that's not easy to get in the U.S., and the quality goes up and down (except for Dredd, which is usually great). You can find some of the best Judge Dredd stories collected in graphic novels. The recent Dredd/Aliens crossover by Dark Horse, I thought, was not bad at all. The Dredd/Batman crossovers have been mixed; I only really liked Die Laughing.
Everybody has already mentioned Hellboy; I don't know if the titles Mike Mignolia isn't writing are worth reading?
There are old indy comics that I really loved - Howard Chaykin's American Flagg and Matt Wagner's Mage. Frank Miller's Martha Washington books (the first was "Give Me Liberty") are among his best work (and she'd be a great clix), and I also really liked Pat Mill's first Marshall Law series, "Fear and Loathing," and John Smith's "New Statesmen."
gee, this must be a subject dear to my heart!

Marshal Law was great!
I also liked:
300 and Sin City

there is a new series coming out this month. it's called 'Alchemy' i believe. but yeah, reading the old stuff is almost required, cept maybe dreams. any of the stuff drawn by rick mayes is awesome, so i'd suggest checking out the scarab mini as well. it ties in nicely with the 'regular' books to.

there are madman trades, i guess availability would depend on where you are. you may want to try graphitti designs web site.
the crossgen stuff is at barnes & noble though. they used to have a deal where you could buy 2 crossgen graphic novels and get a third free. it was a good deal. i got Sojourn (okay), Way of the Rat (my fav of the three), and Ruse (i was thrown off since it was the second collection and i thought it was the first, but otherwise it was okay).
sorry for the multiple posts, but i don't know how to quote multiple people in one post.

Whooa! That's the best news I've heard this month. Thanks for posting it.

Currently, the only comic I read that is Indy is Way of the Rat, which is an unbelievable story coupled with decent art.
I also read some Marvel and DC, but I cannot believe how horrid the art has gotten on most of the titles. JLA? Brutal. The Ultimate serieses(ssss)? Except for UFF, they are all terrible. I read the Sinister 6, and for some reason, except for Kraven, all the villains looked exactly the same. Sad. Supreme Power is quite good. I really like the take on "Superman" and such, and the art is actually decent. And of all those, they are the best of the comics that I have found. I am reluctant to get started on other Indy comics just because I don't want to have to go and pick up more back issues. (I'm still doing it with others that I stopped collecting for a while, like Spawn and WildC.A.T.s the original run...I would never get the utter garbage they are putting out now for the poor WildC.A.T.s...makes me shudder)
I can't help but wish that the art, and stories, on comics would get back to the good 'ol days. Oh well. I'll stick with 'em and hope something comes up.
Maybe I will go out and pick up a few issues here or there, but until I see something that absolutely grabs my eyes, I'm gonna refrain from buying anything more.

i would take good stories and competant art anyday versus just good art. not to say i'm not a ##### for some artisits though. i'll buy anything jim lee, and a few other artisits are right up there.
haraggan - newsarama.com has an article about the new kabuki series. check it out.
CEREBUS concludes this month.
It is TP'd from beginning to end, and is well worth your time. You will laugh, and you will cry, and you will even learn somehing about our world, history, and different cultures in the process. What a bargain! The TP's are incredibly thick, and arond 25 to 30 dollars. This is about a dollar an issue.
The War and Peace of comics, and far more important than Watchmen.

Hey, thanks.
I read anything by Grant Morrison, but sometimes I think his stories have been hampered by not having artists with quite the authority to back them up. I never did like his artists on Doom Patrol or even JLA, but Frank Quitely - man.

Anyone who hasn't read Brian K. Vaughn's "Y: The Last Man" is missing out! This comic is unbelievable! I have never seen such an amazing combination of action, plot, political statement, and character development. Vaughn is probably my favorite writer right now, because all of his books are so unique. Also check out "Ex Machina," which is a cool political thriller. Anyone who reads these will tell you that they are top notch, what comics are supposed to be.

Also check out Powers, which is technically not an Indy comic anymore, because it's published under Marvel's Icon line, but the spirit is still there. Amazingly well-paced crime fiction.

Dark Horses' Conan.
If you read enough Powers, it gets old, though.
Stray Bullets (gritty crime fiction)
Strangers in Paradise (great art, great characters)
Love & Rockets (same as above ;)
Judge Dredd (the old classics by Mills, Bolland, Esquerra etc)
Bryan Talbot's:
-Tale of One Bad Rat
-Nemesis the Warlock
-Luther Arkwright
Anything by Enki Bilal (ok, techincally not indy since its pretty mainstream here in Europe.
Most of the above are technically not superhero comics, though, if that was what you were looking for.

I really like Stray Bullets too. I got hooked on it when I found a box of back issues at Goodwill.
Anyone read Alan Moore's old 2000 A.D. comic, "D.R. and Quinch"? This is the coolest comic ever! Absolutely hilarious.
haraggan
01/11/2005, 20:22
I think "D.R. and Quinch" and "The Bojeffries Saga" are the best things Moore's ever done.

I used to read:
Sojourn
Way of the Rat
Both of which were excellent titles. But with Crossgen going out of business, they are no longer being produced. :( They were both excellent titles, and if you can go back and get them for cheap, I'd recommend them. On a good note (sort of) Disney recently bought the rights to Crossgen , and there is a small ray of hope that we may get to see what happened to Arwyn and Boon at the end of their respective titles.
Currently, I read:
Conan (Dark Horse)
The Darkness (Top Cow/Image)
Conan has kind of lost some of it's steam for me. since it was released. It's still good, but not as good as when it first came out. Buisek is a good writer, so I'm sure it's only a lull.
The Darkness, is month in and month out, a gret comic. It probably combines both writing and art, better than any othet title that I read, on a more consistent basis. think of it as Punisher Mx, with out the foul anguage, and from a mobster's point of view.
Image/Top Cow, recently reorganized their production staff, so that there are set dates as to when things are released, so that's a good thing. These are good stories, that are sometimes hard to wait for. Especially when you are waiting an extra 2-3 weeks from when you expected a comic to be released.

Gaa! No more Crossgen! I was a big fan of their more sci-fi titles. Sigil, Crux, and especially Negation. The company ended so fast that Negation literally stopped in the middle of a storyarc.

Danger Girl: At least the original run, written AND drawn by Campbell, which is available all together in a single TPB. Campbell knew he had something good, but he moved to sell out way too quick. Such a shame...
Gen 13: I've collected most of the first 25 issues (which I've been assured are the good ones by many people) and it was well worth it. It's the way teens with super powers would really act. Very fun, never TOO serious.
Hsu & Chan: Probably only a good idea if you're into dry humor and don't mind reading "tiny" text (I have no problem with it, but anyone else I show it to complains like all get out).
Right off the bat i'm going tp admit I don't know nearly as much about Indy comics as I do Marvel and DC, being more "mainstream". The only Indy comics I currently own/or have read is Hellboy, BPRD, and Hellboy: Weird tales. I have gotten interested in Hellblazer, but haven't bought any yet. Mainly because I want to start at the beginning, therefore I need John Constantine: Hellblazer #1.
