View Full Version : OT: Looking for a (few) graphic novel(s) similar to Kingdom Come
I'm looking for something like Kingom Come in its since of Super Hero VS Super Hero, and vast battles. Something that spreads across an entire comic universe blending many comic books characters together. Either from Marvel or DC preferably, if there is anything else even like KC. :)
Thanks!

I loved Contest of Champions as a kid. It's actually the closest thing to HC in comics. I think there was a sequel, but I never read it. I'd like to second everything that has been mentioned so far, I've read them all but Earth X.

Marvels is a great TPB. Alex Ross art again and a good story. It has some hero vs hero (i.e., Namor vs. Torch), but it is really about a regular peron's view of the emergence of Marvel superheroes and the events that shaped the Marvel world.

I heard it was coming the last week of march.
I think it's the 31st.
Not in TP, but a good read. CAPTAIN AMERICA and THE PUNISHER. A great 4 issue mini. Also a great one shot, and the best Marvel/DC crossover to date: CAPTAIN AMERICA and BATMAN.
If you're into Indy, Image and Valiant had a neat conflagration called DEATHMATE. Not long on plot, but it was such a neat roller coaster to see all the characters played with in different ways.
Not a versus, but required reading for KC fans:
THE POWER OF SHAZAM! by Jerry Ordway.
This TP is the official origin for Captain Marvel as far as regular DC continuity goes at the moment. The 47 issue series which followed is also stellar material.

JLA/JSA Virtue Vice is one of the best crossovers with a big gun feel to the book!!
Top Ten by Alan Moore is arguably some of his best work.
The latest JLA storyarc Trail by Fire (not the carp extiction) with JLA taking on Martian Manhunter is great stuff!!
Coming out now this week is Avengers/Thunderbolts TPB vol 1 is a soild read!
Superman/Batman first 6 issues is good it's coming out in hard cover TPB this summer.

Personally, I didn't like and was disappointed by Virtue and Vice. However, I do respect that it was a homage to the JLA/JSA cross-overs back in the day.
I thought it was a great idea and premise: two classic villains teaming together to thwart the JLA and JSA. However, the development of the story was too quick with little explanation sprinkled here and there. I also wanted more substantial interaction between teams and characters.
However, I enjoyed the art.
Overall, I thought Virtue and Vice was too reminiscent of Jerry Bruckheimer film: all flash and no substance.
The Dark Knight Returns - must read

James Robinson's 'The Golden Age' is very good.

The Last Avengers Story by Peter David is quite a read.
Crisis is beautiful, so is Watchmen (deconstructing the traditional "hero" concept), and on the topic of Alan Moore's work, the very underrated V for Vendetta is simply a fantastic read (of course, it has no real superhero, but still amazing nontheless).
