I do several unusual things and I can't guarantee they will be of any use but I'm always happy to compare notes.

1.) Standard beginning

I wash the figure in warm water with a drop or two of dish washing soap then let air dry on paper towels.

I prime with Games workshop white primer for most super heroes as I think I get brighter colors on the finished figure. If it's to be a dark paint scheme as with many villains I like a black primer, the Maestro is a black under coat. If it is a mix then just paint some section black and some white as seems best.

2.) Painting a cheap but faster blend
For a official character I search the web or my comics for a decent shot of the character to base colors off of. I paint the basic colors in a neutral shade, so If i want a super bright red on the finished, I'd paint a medium red.

When I have the medium shade down and its very dry I paint in my shadows. I'll usually paint three steps for shadow and three for the highlight.

a.) Shadows: 1st shade, lightest of the shadow 70% base + 30% darker version of same color, this is close to the neutral medium color and is painted in the recesses of the figure but pilling out a little

b.) 2nd shade, medium shadow 50% medium shade + 50% darker version, Paint it into the recesses as you did with the lightest but cover less so that the lighter shade peeks out around the edges.

c.) 3rd shade, core shadow 30% base color and 70% darker shade,(maybe more), painted within the area of the medium shade so that all three shades peek through.

I mix some of the medium color with a darker shade of the same color or a color that contains it. (I don't like to use straight black as I think it robs the figure of liveliness)

as an example- For red I'd shade it with a darker red or a dark purple-(purple contains red so it makes a nice dark but not black shadow.

Highlights are done much the same way as shadows except the formulas replace a lighter shade for the dark. the highlight is painted so that the lighter shade is built up over the previous neutral, the next lighter covering a smaller area within that etc. Often I paint in a very light point highlight if the character is shiny.

i let them dry for a full 24 hours, ridicules but it definitely works to dry them. Then I spray them with a coat of a gloss sealant.

If it is to be a shiny piece it will g et a second coat of gloss and maybe some thicker areas applied by hand.

If it is a neutral, not shiny, piece I spray with two light coats of a matte sealant then hit the shiny bits with a brush applied gloss coat.

Sorry about the length there. Carlos

One final quirk. I guess becouse I started reading comics before computer coloring, I like any character that is older than the late 1980s to look relatively flat in color so it better esembles the comics I saw them in.

WOW, is amazing, I must try something like that, then how long you wait before paint with a second paint level?

It depends on humidity 20-40 minutes with most acrylics. It makes working on multiple figures a bit more productive.

Great paintjobs on all, not sure who the all the characters are, but im not into a whole lot of characters. Love the brown demon looking guy, not a lot of color but i see lots of highlighting making him stand out. Good job ;)

Thank you Cham

The bottom two rowa are semi obscure characters from the Champions super hero rpg, some of whom saw light in comics and some not.

The Demon is Dark Seraph from the above group.

Carlos, for the record the Maetro's body is from a gumball machine figure with a Hulk head so I can't take any credit for the sculpt but I appreciate the comment.

what kind of gumball machine figures do you have, all we got here are those lame ### little homie things,:ermm:

but anyway, what did you use to make dark seraph. i swear ive seen that body somewhere

1.) There semi new, The machines are yellow and there are 4 of them built into a single block with a transparent display on top. They cost $1.00 a pop.

The current machines have the simpsons figs, Barbie, Disney characters and the Marvel figures done in a weird bobblehead type thing, semi normal bodies with oversized heads on springs, Venom, Spiderman, the Ultimate Green Goblin, Hulk, the Leader, cyclops, Wolverine and Magneto.

I used a green Goblin for the Maestro. The larger standing figures, Magneto and Venom might make good base figs for established figs like ######## boy or what ever Hank Pym called himself. I find the machines in supermarkets and Toys r Us.

2.) The dark seraph is from a Yu Gi Oh toy blister. i don't know the source material at all so I can't tell you what it is. Originally it was molded in light purple and had a orange cape instead of the Hawkman wings as well as a big scimitar style sword. It is about 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 a clix high making it somewhat imposing on the table. If you have a toy r us look there or go to their website, they had thousands of the unsold things.
