Can a deity lose his mind? If so, is the breaking point that of a normal man?
Thanos, the mad god, is an example of a god losing his mind. Growing completely insane, he went on a mad quest to gain the Infinity Gauntlet once again. Eventually, he regained it, once again becoming the most powerful being in the universe. While trying to decide what to do first to subdue his psychotic need for death and mayhem, an idea occured to him.
For a long time, he was aware of two seperate universes, living their lives, completely unaware of each other. Thanos had become entranced by the different cities, different ideals, different heroes, and what intrigued Thanos the most... different villians.
He created himself an exquisite palace, a universe in itself, between the universes, a perfect observation deck for the mayhem that he would create. He let out an insane laugh, so loud and maniacal that it shook the very fortress around him. His eyes gleamed with delight as his plan began to unfold.
A harlequinned hoodlum for an armored diplomat, a cunning strategist for a master of magnetism, an incredible android for an unstoppable power, a god of vengeance for a god of mischief. With every trade, his mind became more pleased. He looked with pride at the abstract tapestry of the universes he created.

The sun was rising over the New York skyline, casting shadows of the massive skys####ers over the awakening city. But one of the most famous buildings in all of New York, and also a popular tourist attraction, was the Baxter Building. It has been towering over Manhattan since 1949, originaly built by the Baxter Paper Company. This is not the thing that makes this building so important, however. This building is the headquarters for the most famous super-hero team in all the world. From Chicago to Holland to Latveria, everybody knows the name of the Fantastic Four.
Reed Richards, better known to the public as Mr. Fantastic, walked into the kitchen, whistling a cheerful tune. He was already in uniform, showered, and neatly shaven. "Hello, Ben," he said. He walked over to the stove where his wife, Sue, was making some scrambled eggs, leaned over, and pecked her cheek. "How's your morning, pal?"
"Too early, Reed." The Thing didn't even look up from the Style section of the newspaper. He pushed the chair across the table out just as Reed approached it, knowing Reed's routine. Reed sat down at the table, running his hand through his hair. Reaching across the room, he turns on the 6:00 news.
"And the president will address the nation tonight, so tune in. In other news, another bank heist was pulled off last night, and once again, the bodies found had their faces contorted into hideous grins. Is this another one of the 'Joke Killings', or is it just another copycat? When we find out, so will you."
Reed turned off the TV, as Sue put a steaming plate of eggs in front of her husband, knowing he would be happy with the ham she threw in. She smiled to herself, and thought The most genius scientific mind on the planet, and he still gets giddy when I put ham in his eggs.
A young man walked in, robe open, hair dishevled. Johnny Storm was definitly not a morning person. He grabbed a box of Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, eating them dry, strait out of the box. He sat with a slump at the table, and burnt off his 5 o'clock shadow, heating up a cup of coffee. "For goodness sake, Johnny, eat them with milk, like a sane person," Sue said, acting like more of a mother than a sister.
"You know what?" Reed said, finishing his eggs. "These 'Joke Killings' have gone on long enough. I think its time we step in, and try to figure out whats going on."
"Y'now Rubberhead? Yer right! Not like our plate is full. I can't help but wonder where Doom is! Let alone the rest of our rouge's gallery." Ben said, placing the New York Times aside.
"You're absolutly correct, Ben," Reed replied, rubbing his chin. "Nobody knows where Victor is. Professor Xavier said he hasn't seen Magneto or the Juggernaut. The Avengers haven't had any Ultron or Loki related problems. Somethings not right."
With that, the Fantastic Four went back to eating their breakfast and reading their papers. Little do they know that they have been studied by a strategic mastermind. Even Reed Richards would be impressed by the man's technology.
"I am finally prepared to take out the Fantastic Four. When I defeat the world's first super-hero team, the whole world will know and fear me," this man said, looking up from his computer screens. And in truth, very soon, the world will know the name of Prometheus.

Victor Von Doom had been patient. He realized his needs, which were primarily money and technology. He had accumulated a large sum of money, made by patenting scientific technology and weaponry. Obviously, he did not take the risk of patenting them himself, but hired a previously unemployed man to do this for him, giving him 10% of the money. He knew to influence this man by inducing fear in him.
He had collected all of the information he could on the heroes of this new universe. He easily deduced that Superman would provide the biggest challenge, but in his mind, he knew not to underestimate the "Batman" from Gotham City. Now was the time to make the entire world aware of Doom's presence.
He walked to a large computer system, which had taken up much of his money. He had spent weeks, secretly connecting this system to all of the TV stations in the country. Finally, his planning was about to pay off.
-Elsewhere-
"And the newfound 'Brotherhood of Evil Mutants' was defeated by the Justice Society earlier today. The members are in police custody, but refuse to tell who their leader is."
Bruce Wayne turned the monitor's volume down to a whisper, and turned to his loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth. "Remind me to look into this 'Brotherhood of Evil Mutants', Alfred."
"Surely, Master Bruce. Are you going to be out late tonight, Sir?" Bruce did not say anything, but nodded, staring contently at the video footage of the JSA fighting the Brotherhood. Just as Sentinel had created an emerald rain to put out Pyro's flame, the screen changed. "Oh, my!" the startled butler cried out, as he saw the man who appeared on the monitor.
A grotesque, metal face, atop a large, armor-clad body, stood on the screen. In a deep voice, with the hint of a German accent, the man began to speak.
"Though you have never seen me before, I know more about this world than you could imagine. I am the brilliant Victor Von Doom, previously known as Doctor Doom. I have finally decided to come out of the shadows, and take this country over. You can try and stop me, but I guarantee you will fail."
"His pride is his weakness. He is thinking he can impress us by hacking into the television system, but even the Joker could do that. This man is obviously not brilliant, just foolish for performing such an act." Alfred Pennyworth nodded his head in agreement to the deductions Batman had just made. He settled down, realizing that his master was the greatest detective on Earth, so he must be right.
Suddenly, there was somebody behind this "Doctor Doom", and this somebody was none other than the Man of Steel. Doom turned nonchalantly, raised his arm, and released an intense energy bolt to Superman's chest. Superman was driven back by the force of the blast, and as he looked down at himself, he saw the blast had burned off some of his uniform. Batman shrugged, still watching, knowing it didn't hurt Clark at all.
Superman flew forward, and landed a solid punch to the metal face of this new figure, but the single punch knocked the head off. It fell to the floor, and that was when Batman realized it was just a robot.
Superman picked the head up, along with the body. He moved to the computer system, and after doing an X-ray scan of the system, he figured out how to turn it off. As he flew away, regular programming continued, a commercial for a flu medicine.
Bruce turned the TV off with disgust at what it had become, and without turning, said, "Hello, Clark." Finally turning to see his visitor, he saw Superman drop the robotic body in front of him.
"I thought you'd want to be the first to check this out." Batman nodded, and went to collect the pieces. "I can't believe this isn't the real thing, that blast packed the kick of a mule." Batman didn't show his surprise, but thought, Perhaps even the Man of Steel can be hurt sometimes.

It was noon, and the mutants at Xavier Institute were settling down for lunch. They were sitting around the pool, eating their sandwiches or snacks. Professor Xavier had always encouraged them to eat healthy foods, but he knew that some people will just have whatever they want. All of the sudden, and alarm started to go off. "That is the front gate alarm, somebodies breaking in," Cyclops said, recognizing the alarm immediately.
As the young men and Jean ran around the mansion, they saw a hulking man, bare chested, and wearing green pants. He was walking casually through the fire of the automated defense turrets, than cut them all down with a burst of heat vision. "Amazo has no time for this!" He looked up, and saw an armored mutant falling on top of him, and was driven into the ground by the force of the attack.
The X-Men's triumph was short-lived, however, as Amazo flew out of the hole, holding the Russian mutant. As he drove Colossus into the ground, he unleashed a super-fast flurry of attacks on Colossus's face and chest. They were all shocked to see him moving even faster than Quicksilver, but Cyclops was the first to recover. He ran forward, firing a massive optic blast, knocking Amazo off of Colossus. Jean pulled Colossus away from Amazo, and upon observation, she noticed his armor was dented all over, partially torn off in some areas, and he was bleeding, she had never seen him bleed.
"Angel, take Colossus in and see if you can help him." Angel nimbly came down, and took Colossus back into the institute.
Wolverine lunged on Amazo's back, and with his Adamantium claws, started slashing at Amazo's back and throat, but didn't even make a scratch. Amazo laughed his attack off, and reaching back, threw Wolverine across the lawn. Cyclops began to fire at Amazo, but he was to fast, and caught Cyclops unaware by firing his own optic blast, burning his legs. Cyclops fell to the ground, his legs unable to support him.
Gambit, slurring French obscenities, drew a card, charged it, and let it fly. They exploded all around Amazo, but as the smoke and dust cleared, Amazo stood tall. Before Gambit could even react, Amazo was right next to him, and he caught a hard punch to the stomach. He doubled over, vomiting blood.
Amazo turned to see Wolverine rushing toward him, and said, "I don't have time for you." With that, he raised his arm, firing a green blast from a ring on his finger, that engulfed Wolverine. Jean Grey was shocked when she saw that all that was left of Logan was a smoldering skeleton. She sent out a telepathic message to the Professor. Professor, we are losing badly.
I know, Jean. I have been trying to control his mind, but he doesn't seem to have one. He doesn't even seem to be human.
What about Logan?
We will have to pray for him. He has surprised us before, Jean.
Jean looked up just in time to block Amazo's fists with a protective shield. Amazo's attack continued, and Jean began to feel the strain. Eventually, she passed out, overtaxed, and Amazo turned to Cyclops. Scott had lost interest in Amazo, he was just checking on Jean, to make sure she was just unconscious, and Amazo spoke.
"Look at this. The Uncanny X-Men, bested in less than five minutes. You are pathetic compared to the League. I'm not going to kill you, for you must now suffer the humiliation of your crushing defeat." With that, he pointed to their demolished gate, where a crowd of people had milled, watching the battle, some with video cameras, filming their entire defeat. Cyclops started to cry, which he had not done since his parents had died. He cried not only for his legs, not only for his fallen teammates. He cried mostly for a world in which a villain such as Amazo lived, and for a world in which his fellow X-Men were trusted even less than the monster that had stood before them.

Superman gazed at the dank dwellings of the legendary Batman, and wondered how a man could live in such a place. He was used to a life in the open, for he was a hero to the common man, one who found little trouble finding love from the masses. His friend was an underworld figure, lurking in the shadows, working outside of the law. He had some friends; Alfred, Robin, himself, and though Nightwing would be the last to admit it, he was Bruce's friend too. But Batman was used to life underground, found peace in his seclusion.
As Superman finished his speculating, he stared back at his friend, who was working feverishly over his workbench. His cowl was pushed back, and he had a pair of viewing lenses placed over his eyes. The robot's body was stretched out, his chestplate finally pried open, and apperantly Batman had finished his speculating as well. He turned towards the Man of Steel, taking off his lenses, and rubbing his eyes, speaking for the first time since his greeting.
"I hate to say it, but this is the most advanced robot I have seen in my entire life. The armor is incredibly durable, and its weapons systems could give a tank a run for its money. That however, isn't the most amazing thing. This chip here is his artificial intelligence. No chip known to man is as extensive as this one. It is a perfect map of Doctor Doom's mind. Any situation that was thrown at this robot, it would react just as Doom would react. There is also a hologram generator in the head that creates the illusion of a face. I just thought you should know that we are in fact facing a super-genious."
"So what your saying is this Doombot is exactly like Doom in every way?" Superman asked, surprised at Batman calling somebody else a super-genious.
"I'm saying that the 'Doombot' acts exactly like Doom, but as for being exactly like him, I can't be sure. I would deduce that Doom's armor is much more durable, if he even wears armor, and his weapons systems better. For when we face him, we won't be able to tell which is Doom and which is a Doombot, which gives him a clear advantage."
"What do you mean, we?" Superman questioned.
"I'm just saying, we may have to call in the League."
Their conversation was than interrupted by Alfred entering the room. Batman shot him a no-nonsense glance, and Alfred quickly said, "Sir, you may want to check the News, the leader of this Brotherhood of Evil Mutants has revealed himself."
As the two heroes walked to the monitor, they thought of who this leader could be. The obvious thought that came to their minds was that it was Doom, the only man that showed the intelligence to lead such a group.
They finally reached their destination, and saw that this was not Doom, but a man hovering in the air, with maroon body armor and a flowing purple cape. He was tearing the wall of the prison down from 100 feet away, and Batman instantly realized his motives. They watched as the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants spilled out of the destroyed wall, picking up the supplies that the man with telikinesis had brought. Suddenly, he turned, and with a simple had gesture, a police car flew forward, smashing into the camera, cutting off the transmission.
"Need a lift?" Superman asked, outstretching his hand.
Batman looked over at his Batmobile, and said, "I'll catch up."

Sofia Linder had sat in the same chair, at the same job, for 5 years. This job was being the front desk clerk at the Baxter Building, and over the years, she had seen it all. She had witnessed Namor, the Avengers, and even Doctor Doom himself. But most of the time, she met businessmen. Today was no exception, as a man approached the desk, carrying a briefcase in one arm. "May I help you?"
"Hello, I'm Karl Foster, the Fantastic Four's new accountant." She noticed the man spoke in a quick, nervous voice, and had beads of perspiration on his forehead. "I believe I have an appointment."
She checked the logs as he pulled out a hankerchief, dabbing his head. Surely enough, a Mr. Foster had an appointment to meet the Fantastic Four, and briefed him. He would go to the top floor, where he would find a steel door. Here, he would ring down to her, and she would type the password to open the lock, allowing him entrance. She pointed the way to the elevator, but he told her he would take the stairs, he needed the exercise. As he walked away, she rang up to the Fantastic Four, telling them Mr. Foster was coming up.
After Karl Foster got to the 29th floor, he opened a window, using a lockpick he extracted from his briefcase. Leaning out, he took in a duffel bag, resting on a window washers platform, exactly where he had put it. He reached in and took out a helmet, uniform, and a menacing nightstick. He put them on, and Karl Foster was gone, Prometheus standing tall. He was calm and collected, much unlike the man he had pretended to be.
Finally finished, he continued his trek up the stairs, and arrived at the door. He rang down to Sofia, and putting on his nervous voice again, said, "Could ya ring me in, hon?" The door buzzed, and he entered, having to walk up one more flight of stairs, but realized he was in their headquarters, and smirked.
He could hear the Thing's heavy footsteps falling, and saw the grotesque figure come around the corner, to greet the new accountant, but upon seeing this man wearing such strange garb, he questioned, "Who the heck're you?"
Prometheus calmy placed a disk into his helmet, and instantly remembered the martial arts secrets of the worlds greatest masters, but not this world. He touched a button on his shock stick, charging it. "I am Prometheus, the man who is about to defeat the Fantastic Four."
"Well, we take a little offense to that here, sonny. We don't much like bein' defeated, mostly by a little squirt like you. But things've been goin' a little slow around here, so I'm really in the mood to clobber someone right now, and you're it pal. It's Clobberin' Time!"
The Thing charged Prometheus, sending a well aimed punch at him, but the man ducked the attack easily, and smashed his shock stick into the monster's stomach. The Thing felt like he had been hit by a truck, and was surprised at how hard something so small could hurt so bad. Ben Grimm was driven to his knees by the force of the blow, and Prometheus continued his attack, focusing on the Thing's head and shoulders, until he was on the floor, unconscious.
Prometheus moved on, stepping over the fallen body of his previous adversary. As he gazed around, he was impressed by the surroundings. It looked more like a home than a place of business, when in fact it was both. Snapping back into focus, he shouted in his nervous voice, "Hello? Is anyone here? This is Karl Foster, your accountant!"
He smirked once again when he heard the young Johnny Storm's voice, shouting at Ben for not welcoming their visitor. The skinny blond walked into the room that Prometheus was standing in, and burst into flames, demanding to know who the intruder was. Prometheus sighed, and said, "I've been over this with your freakish friend before, I am Prometheus, and I'm your worst nightmare."
With that, he whipped his left arm up, firing a dart at the young man. Johnny stood his ground, knowing that the dart would not reach his skin, but simply be stopped by the intense heat of his flame. But, Prometheus had done some psychological studies on the behaviors of the Human Torch, and planned for this event. The capsule erupted inches away from the young man, and made a slight noise. The Human Torch looked surprised as his flame began to go down. "What?" was all Johnny could think to say.
"Fire can't survive without oxygen, and my little invention is sucking all the oxygen in your general area." Prometheus slowly moved foreword, and hit a pressure point on Johnny's neck, causing him to pass out. He laughed at how easy this had been so far, but knew that these were the two easiest members to defeat.
Alerted by the noise of what was happening in the other room, Reed and Sue ran into the room, spotting a man who was not familiar to them standing over Johnny's still body. "Sue, call for medical assistance, he must've gotten Ben too. I'll hold him!" Sue ran for the telephone, and Reed stretched foreword, wrapping around the stranger, tying him tight. He noticed the smile on his face, just as he felt an intense shock. He fell back to get away from the attack, and noticed the man's nightstick was emitting electric impulses.
Just as he began to recover from the electrocution, the man was upon him, bringing his stick down onto Mr. Fantastic's upper body, and the leader of the super team instinctively flattened his body, not feeling the impact, but it was all in Prometheus's plan. He released another dart, that burst all over the elastic skin of Mr. Fantastic. Reed began to lose the feeling of his muscles, and eventually he lost all feeling of being able to get his body back together. The substance had stuck him in a liquid state, making him unable to do anything.
Sue hung up the phone, and disappeared from Prometheus's sight, attempting to sneak away. He laughed and, touching a button on his helmet, said, "You think you can hide from me? The most recent upgrade on my helmet allows me to see the invisible spectrum, rendering your invisibility completely useless." He swiftly walked after her, and she realized she couldn't hide from him, decided to put up an invisible barrier around herself.
"It's common knowledge that if one applies enough force on your invisible barriers, the mental backlash becomes too severe, and you pass out. You are hopeless, your team is pathetic, and quite frankly, your finished." He began to beat on her force-field with his shock stick, and was seeing her falter. She finally cried out, as she could not take anymore, and fell to the ground, unconscious. Prometheus grinned, feeling great pride in himself for defeating the team so easily, feeling great pride in his plan.
He left the door, and walked back down to the 29th floor. Taking off his uniform, he placed them back into the duffel bag, and opened his briefcase, which contained a folded window-washer uniform. Putting it on, he picked up his duffel, and slid out the window onto the platform. As he pressed the button to descend, he hummed a tune to himself, pleased with his day.

Superman arrived at the prison to see it in complete disarray, pieces of concrete strewn about across the parking lot. A sound of a man screaming for help alerted him, and he spotted a young police-man with his lower body trapped under an enormous slab of cement. Superman was to him in a matter of seconds, and lifted the slab up, tossing it to the side. He used his X-ray vision on the cop's legs, and saw multiple compound fractures. Superman lifted the man, and took him to a nearby ambulance. "Did you see where the man who caused this went?" he asked the cop.
"Well, I saw him fly off, carrying his brotherhood on a bus, like it was with his mind. Thats when I passed out. They were going toward the old mills."
"Thank you, sir." Superman said, as the man began to get wheeled away on his stretcher. Suddenly, the Batmobile came screeching to a stop next to him. The canopy opened, and Batman hopped out. "They went to the old mills," Superman said to his teammate. "What took you so long?"
"Had to cook up some things to take down the brotherhood. They shouldn't be a problem, but I'm suspicious of the leader. We have no way of knowing how extensive his power is, though we know it is some form of telekinesis."
"We'd better get going." Superman took off, and Batman fluidly hopped into the Batmobile, driving away at incredible speeds. They quickly arrived at the mills, and saw the mysterious leader floating in the air. All of the sudden, he thrust his hand out, and the front of the Batmobile crushed in, smashing through the windshield, pressing against the Dark Knight. With a flash, Superman was on the ground, and tore a large hole in the side, allowing Batman to flee from what used to be his car.
"Go find the brotherhood, I'll take the leader." Batman agreed that it was a sound plan, since the man's flight would hinder him. He began to sprint to the nearest mill, and ran through the door. He looked forward, and dove to the ground as a large metal gear whipped through the air, barely missing him. When it passed him, he arose again, and turned the corner, into the main room of the mill. He grimaced as he saw the entire brotherhood in front of him. They had finally been named on the news: Pyro, Avalanche, Mystique, and the Toad.
Meanwhile, Superman demanded to know the villain's name, and what he wanted. The man simply replied, "I am Magneto, the world's most powerful mutant. Mutants are the future, and I intend to keep it that way." With this, the gear that Magneto had pulled from inside the mill slammed into Superman's back, slamming him to the ground, and began to spin at ungodly speeds, driving the Man of Steel into the Earth. Magneto reveled in this, and had already realized that his powers somehow worked much better in this new world, must be the difference in the metals.
"Time for ol' Bats to be on the barby," Pyro said, raising his flamethrowers. Batman instinctively crouched, draping his cape around his entire body. A large spout of fire exploded from the flamethrowers, and Batman was engulfed. Finally, the attack let up, and the Australian mutant said, "Well, that was easier than I thought it was gonna be." That was when Batman lunged at Pyro, knocking him onto the ground, and pulled out a special batarang. Activating a switch on the batarang, sharp blades came out the end, which he used to sever the fuel lines of Pyro's flamethrowers. As the fuel spilled out, Batman heard a low rumble begin, and rolled away. The ground quaked, and Batman turned to Avalanche. Rolling away from another of Avalanche's attacks, he withdrew something from his belt. He pressed a button, and Avalanche began to scream, and passed out. Mystique was the last one left, for the cowardly Toad had scurried away.
Superman grunted, and began to push himself up against the gear, pushing through the pain. He suddenly felt relief, as the cogs began to break of against his back. When he was finally able to get back out of the ground, Magneto was gone, running away to plan for future events.
Mystique dove at Batman, shouting, "What did you do to Avalanche?" Batman dodged her attack, and told her that he had reversed Avalanche's powers, so he basically caused an earthquake in his own body. She threw another series of quick punches at him, which he effortlessly blocked. He grabbed her arms, but she shrank away, shifting to a smaller form. She punched him in the face, and he reached up, covering his mouth. As he put his hand down, she saw he had place a gas mask in his mouth, he had let her hit him so she wouldn't expect the gas pellets he threw. She jumped away from them as they erupted, but wasn't fast enough to escape the fumes of the knock-out gas, and she passed out. Batman turned, and walked out of the mill, and outside, he approached Superman, who was facing him.
"Magneto is gone, but we have the brotherhood again. Good job, Bruce," Superman said, and turned to fly back to Metropolis, but realized something. Turning back, he said, "Need a lift? You seem to be having a little car trouble."
"You're bleeding," Batman said, holding up a hubcap from the ex-Batmobile. Superman turned, and looked at his reflection in the hubcap, realizing that Batman was right. The force of the wheel had torn the entire back of his costume off, and he was bleeding from several places, making his back a bloody mess. "To tell you the truth, I could use that lift. I already told Oracle to send some SCU to take these mutants back to jail."
He took Superman's outstretched hand, and they flew away, leaving the mills behind. Superman thought, I'll be fine in an hour or so, wish I could say the same for this costume.
