Galactus

"WizKids has announced a new line of games. During the Galactus breakfast giveaway WizKids revealed CSG, or Constructible Strategy Games. The first in the new line will be “Pirates of the Spanish Main”. The CSG line is to be based on the idea of a game where players build their game pieces using styrene cards sold in card packs. As

units take damage they are disassembled until destroyed. The Pirates game will retail for $3.49 a pack and will be available in July. We’ll have pictures for you in a few minutes. " From Gaming Report.

I don't know about anyone else but this sounds stupid to me. I bet those card ships don't have a long life span since you have to keep taking them apart and putting them back together.

I hope that thing fails so that they might decide to give Indy Clix an expansion...

Lets review recent WK ideas-
Indy-lets get a small base set with 50% of figs most people don't know, and leave out some figs that could sell the set(ie Ethan, Giselle, Obo, various others just from Crossgen). Well, this idea failed.
Creepy Freaks-lets make gross out figs for little kids to get them into our games. Nice idea, failed miserably.
Sportsclix-play baseball with dice and miniatures. What the hail? I have seen a demo and could never see myself playing this. Don't know about sales, but in my area they have been minimal. Probably fails.
Pirates-biuld ships from foam cards and somehow destroy them using dice. You have got to be kidding me. This is what the braintrust at WK is coming up with? We'll see if this even hits the stores, as this will fail worse than all of the above combined.

At least the production cost should be less...but it may be tough keeping your collection together!

Perhaps the Pirate theme is a Ninja face-slap?

So, will there be a Ninjas game to counteract the Piratey goodness here? ;)

[edit: Bad tidge! Out of my head!]

I don't know...pirates sound like fun!! On the other hand, there is no buit-in audience for a pirate game, as there is for Heroclix, LOTR, baseball, or Star Wars....

....and speaking of Star Wars, here are some pics of miniatures from that same site:

There goes my Heroclix budget!

The cards are the same as the ones that are used for Constructed Terrain, Relics, Items, and Domains for Mage Knight 2.0.

Constructed Terrain didn't really go over all that well in Mage Knight 2.0 and it's not even in the first expansion. I think the problem was mostly because you needed 3 cards for alot of the terrain pieces -- they seem to have over come that by makign each card it's own ship.

I'm still pretty iffy on this one though. Historical games can be a difficult sell in the first place and the catch (build your own ships) in this isn't really all that interesting. That's just my initial impression though -- I'll probably check it out when I hear more about it as.

This would have been a perfect tie in to ONE PIECE, ####it. The Going Merry could beat any of these joker ships...

Not one of WK's better ideas.

On the other hand, I wish wizkids would stop failing. If they keep screwing up game lines, we are gonna have no wizkids to make our plasticrack.

Arr Pirates ahoy! Lol... Seriously thats not going to sell at all... Wizkids has 4 good things going now, Heroclix, Sportsclix, Mage Knight and Mechwarrior, they should just stick to those 4

Are we always going to be bagging out Wizkids for giving something new a go?

Fine, new ideas may flop after their first steps, but that shouldn't stop anyone or anything to that matter from trying something new.

Gentlemen/ladies, the world does not revolve around Heroclix, and nor should it.

If this thing doesn't sell well, then that's for Wizkids to decide what do after that. Maybe they should be paying more attention to Heroclix, Mech Warrior, Mage Knight and Sportsclix, but you don't get very far in business if you're not willing to take risks, or if you leave all your eggs in one basket.

This particular game has some appeal to me, as I was a fan of 'Pirates of the Carribbean' movie and game for PC. Personally, I would buy in to it.

I would play it only if they did an expansion set for One Piece... nah actually I'd rather just see some animeclix set with the OP characters, the boats are kinda bland.

Who cares about that pirate ship carp. I wetted myself with the star wars miniatures. I just hope they come out inbetween sets of heroclix.

...wha? WK made a few big losses and now after just a few months they're going to try on another risk? They're really pushing their luck, I hope they cancel this idea before it even hits production because this is really not the time for them to be making any games that has a 50/50 chance of success. Oh my god I just want to smack whoever's in charge right now!

actually.. I think that looks rather cool.
the ships may nnot have a long life, but they are cards.. you just buy new ones. can't be really expensive..

Arrrr! This old buccaneer looks forward to the Pirate game! When the so-called "ninja" expansion comes out, I can add them to my kill list!

Looks interesting to me. If they could combine it with real historic ships and battles it would be really interesting...

About $1.75 for each ship.

Say $7 for a flotilla, and $21 for a small fleet.

But you may have to replace that small fleet every 10 games!

I'm all for it. Reminds me of the old 'Man o War' game from Warhammer that was so cool. I'll definitely give them points for originality and I'll withhold complete judgement until I can see how durable these things are.

You must not treat your things very well! :p

Seriously though, I imagine they'll go together rather easily and thus not be much of a hassle to be putting together and taking apart constantly. Sure eventually they'll probably break... But so do clix. I imagine it'll mostly come down to how well you can store them when you're _not_ playing that will expand or contract their life span.

Happy clixing,
Mike

if they make then out of plasctis like they do in the MK2.0 cards they should hold up very well

I would rather see them do a martial arts clix game. Instead of powers as in hero clixs they could do speacial manuvers.. like round house , back kick, black flip etc.. Instead of team abilities then could have martial art styles like kungfu, karate etc.. And YES ninjas would be in the set as well as sumu wrestlers, etc .

Anyone ever assemble Z-Cards? I have a bunch of Teen Titans Z-Cards. I imagine these are just like that only more complicated to assemble. I think it looks great, matey.

I think it's cool that WK does try out these wacky ideas. It may not be the most efficient marketing strategy, but it's cool that they take some risks.

Creepy Freaks could have done well if they didn't go for the sterile "gross out" theme. Apparently, there is no bottom to the market for Pokemon clones, so why try to pretend "gross out" makes your game different?

Crimson Skies could have done well if they used Tie Fighters, X-wings, Death Stars and halved the number of times you had to roll dice when moving fast.

Shadowrun Duels could have done well if they used Taun-Tauns and Wampum Beasts and chicks in metal bikinis. Called it "Star Wars Rebel Nymph Clash" or something. You can justify it by saying its a revolt staged by Jabba's dance troope, whatever, just spread some pink paint on a curvy sculpt and your good to go. And Taun-Tauns.

Sportsclix should do well. I loathe baseball, but even I think the game sounds cool.

Note to WK marketing: Stout nipple tips + Random Nerd License = Cash. The White Queen clix sits on my nightstand for a reason.

I got a GREAT Idea, and I seriously hope that Wiz Kids will take the advice. Are ya ready? Here it goes....First, you make a pretty cool game such as Mage Knight or Hero Clix. You get everybody addicted to it, make them cough up their hard earned dollars to get a good collection. You with me so far? THEN....after you do that, you totally screw them over! In the case of Mage Knight...you put out 2.0, and you say that all the figures of the previous expansions will be completely compatible. But THEN... once everybody buys that lie, THEN you can say you're retiring all the previous expansions from tournament play. Whoah!! They could do that with Hero Clix too! Then after all of us out there have our collections of Hero Clix, they could come out with a new expansion and retire a previous expansion from tournament play, and thus nulling and voiding everybody's collection that they tried so hard to complete, and making them nothing more than overpriced paperweights!!
Oh....wait....they already thought of this idea.... Stupid Wiz Kids!!! This idea makes me have soooo much loyalty towards them...yes, please let me give you my money and get nothing, not even collectibility, in return!!!!

What about some form of a Wrestling Clix? As a gamer, I'm not really into the more traditional "real" sports. (Duh! If I was into sports I'd be one of those cool jock guys, not one of the dorky-cool gamers of the world). I mean wrestling is more like a live action comic book than anything. Heroes are faces, villains are heels.... And you could have different matches, tag matches, singles, gimmick matches. It's like Hero Clix only with big charismatic muscle heads and special abilities. That makes more sense than baseball clix... I mean they're trying to sell sports to gamers. That's two waaaay different social groups. At least wrestling has it's own niche in dork-dom. Down with the corporate suits! If Wiz Kids wants to survive another year or two, they need to get somebody that has a clue to run that corp!

AlgertMan: I talked to the wizkids employees at GAMA and they used the MK2.0 cards as an example of the material for the ships. They should hold up pretty well for $3.50 per pack. They also had some mock ups of the ships in a case and they look very nice and well detailed.
