Continuing with a series of threads on some of your favourite Clix characters and the best comics they’ve appeared in.
Please feel free to post your favourite storyline, issue or one-shot about the featured character. Give a description too, if you’re up to it. Who knows, maybe someone who hadn’t given this character a chance might change their mind and check out your recommendation.
Up next:
Hawkman
My favourite story:
The Missing Armada
From World's Finest #274-282
Writer: Bob Rozakis ("The Answer Man")
Artists: Alex Saviuk and Carmine Infantino
I fondly remember having a book like World's Finest on the shelves when I was a kid. This was an awesome book. It always had a full length story starring Superman and Batman, followed by a series of backups featuring tonnes of other heroes who were cool but didn't have their own books, including Captain Marvel, Green Arrow and of course: Hawkman!
In his series Hawkman was on a quest to find the missing Hawkwoman and a vanished Thangarian fleet. To that end, a lot of the series involved Hawkman cruising around outer space in his starship and having adventures along the way. The coolest was the one where Space Pirates captured the ship and Hawkman had to fight to regain control.
I couldn't get over how unbelievably cool this was as a kid. Here was a Super-hero doing Sci-Fi stuff, and unlike Green Lantern, he had to rely on his technology and wits to get by. I always wished that they'd expand this from a nine page back-up or give Hawkman his own book (Unfortunately, when they did give him his own book during the "Shadow War" stuff, he was mostly Earth-bound, which wasn't as interesting). Now, it's been a Loooong time since I've read these, and I'm sure they're extremely dated now, but at the time, they were a kid's true treasure.
Still these stories were gems. I really dig what Johns did bringing back the Golden Age Hawkman in the current series, but to me, this space-faring hero will be the guy I associate with the name Hawkman.
