i admit it, i was a marvel zombie, i could not be told that marvel was bad or did i believe that anything could be good if it was not marvel, and for this i must be punished and i was. i missed out on many good comics, but now its be fixed ive been reading hellboy as you my know by my many posts on how good it is. i have also picked up danger girl cause it was recomended to me as a jamesbond, charlies angles, action movie rolled up into a wet t-shirt contest. and it delivered.

now i ask you guy, what else out there is really good, i have been told to try ghost. and think i might but what else is out there worth getting and worth trying to get back issues?

thanks alot

The Sandman series by Neil Gaimen.

It might set you back a bit to collect, but man it's mmm mmm good!

A number of CrossGen titles deliver good reads and great art -- my personal favorites are Sojourn, The Path, and Negation. I must say I don't read many current mainstream titles, though -- my tastes run towards indy/small press stuff, like Bone, Age of Bronze, Finder, Cerebus (especially the early stuff), Platinum Grit, etc. Other more mainstream titles that rock hard are the entire Neil Gaiman Sandman run (duh), Watchmen (also duh), Dark Knight Returns (see previous), Frank Miller's Ronin and Sin City. If you like manga with epic storylines try Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds or Masamune Shirow's Appleseed.

I developed my comic tastes in the early 90's, right before the Image debacle. It was a terrible time for intelligent, original comics. Despite it all, I somehow learned that comics could still be incredible stories, about much more than babes and battles -- I'm glad that you're starting to look outside the "Marvel Bubble", and I wish you luck!

The books that the others have listed are all good bets.

But if you want to complete your training in the DarkSide, then skip on over to DC and check out some of the collected TPBs of the Nightwing series. It is in many ways, much more compelling than the Batman books. Really well written, for the most part. Lot's of psychological exploration of Richard Grayson and defining his relationship with Batman and Robin and Oracle.

Good stuff. :)

Early Powers.

Yea pick up the trades before you start volume 2.(if you even like it, which you will). Also human target and invincible are good. Also you can pick up 100 bullets it's a good book as well.

If your looking for old back issues Give me liberty by Frank Miller is an amazing title and is highly under rated. My friend picked up the 4 issues set for 10 dollars at a local con.

Admitting it is the first step. We're all proud of you. Marvel has published plenty of excellent stuff, but it's great that you want to branch out.

There are so many great comics out there, and personal taste is just that, personal, so I don't want to just tell you what to buy. To get an idea of what's out there, I'd recommend you browse around at Artbomb (www.artbomb.com) and Savant (www.savantmag.com), and check out this list of great graphic novels from TIME magazine (http://www.time.com/time/columnist/arnold/article/0,9565,547796,00.html).

Happy reading.

PS - Buy the first Bone trade paperback!

My mistake. It's actually here: Artbomb (www.artbomb.net). That first link is to some non-comics related site.

JSA

Get the collected trades and start reading.

At 59 issues it has had no lame filler issues, no inconsequential fluff

Ask around, and many here on the forum would agree

JSA rules

(Oh, and get Kingdom Come.)
