View Full Version : Any 5 figs tourney

Hey guys,

I'm looking to play in a tourney this weekend, and here's the format. Any 5 figures, 1 Rookie, 1 Exp, 1 Vet, 1 Unique, 1 anything goes. Open universe, although team abilities cannot be wildcarded across universes. Here are the restrictions: no 2 figures can be from the same set. No big figs, and I'm not sure about mail away LE's. Setup is battle royale, and all figures will be randomly placed across the board, so its likely figs won't start anywhere near the rest of the team.

I'm trying to come up with something a little different, but I'm having some trouble. The hardest piece to fill is the good rookie. The obvious choice is R Batman, but a lot of people bring him, so I'm looking for some good alternatives. Most folks tend to bring most of the big guns to this thing since there is no point cap. Anyway, what are your suggestions. I have all the REV and Uniques from all the sets except Unleashed of course. Thanks.

WSell, if you had KC Superman, he'd be a shoo-in.

Are Sentinels/Sinestro allowed?

ANother excellent (if cheesy) R would be Invisible Girl.

Or if you are going fo raw points, R Ultron or Doom.

r. Batman
exp. Ultron or Annihilus
v. Dr. Doom
SoD Superman

Even without wildcarding across universe, you have Doom and Ultron or Annihilus shooting, SoD stays close to deal with close range threats, Batman runs interference and outwits.

that was a team a friend of mine ran in something similar. Yeah if you had KC Superman or LE Capt Marvel, I'd go with those instead of SoD. Maybe even Amazo instead of SoD.

barring Unleashed, what if:

R Doomsday
E Batman
V Dr. Doom
U Amazo
LE OWAW Superman

Doom taxis Doomsday & uses him as bodyguard/Mastermind fodder. thanks to the TA's in play, Doom gets Outwit (Supes Enemy), Stealth (Bat Ally) & the ability to fire into Stealth (Supes Ally). everybody else is pretty much on their own, but all can benefit from Doom's Perplex.

just an idea... good luck!

I think he forgot the letters "le" after the 5th one.

R Jean Grey
E Ultron
V Thor
U Silver Surfer
Le Superman

Tk, 2 running shot guys, superman to take out the stealth, and ultron can copy defenders, xmen, or avengers .

Good suggestions. I had thought about Doomsday. My main concern is the fact that its random starting placement for every single figure. The judge puts dots on the board that have numbers on them, and he will place them all over the map, and then you pick one number, place one figure, and then the next guy goes, etc. Usually 4-6 players per map. First turn immunity is still in effect, but only in your starting square. So, realistically you can't play a team that relies on being next to one another initially because every figure in the game is going to start in a different spot. Still, I do like the thought of Doomsday. Obviously Amazo is going to be a good piece. Wish I could use Unleashed, but its not legal there yet, that I'm aware of. Magog would be bringing the pain.

Also, keep in mind, none of the figures can be from the same set. So if I bring Amazo, he'd be the only piece I can bring from Cosmic Justice. If I bring Doom, I can't bring Thor. etc..

Keep the suggestions coming though, I really appreciate it.

All of you had good suggestions. I showed up planning on bringing the following:

R Kang
E Thor
V Ulike
U Amazo
LE Superman

I got there and scoped out a bit of what everyone else was going to bring, and talked with a couple other guys asking them what they though. I expressed my concern over Ulik, since he is so reliant on charge that in this kind of battle, its too easily outwitted and made ineffective. They agreed. So I ended up switching it up a little. I also saw a couple of people bringing Amazo, and I hate being unoriginal. Here's the final team.

R Kang
E Mandarin
V Thor
U Martian Manhunter
LE Superman

I thought bringing Mandarin would give me some outwit, along with mind control. Obviously in this kind of fight you're not going to see many sub 100pt chars, but still, mind control could make a difference. I have always wanted to use the Manhunter, so I decided to bring him in instead. And upgrading Thor to the V never hurts. It ended up being completely random placement on the map. One table (mine), had about 7 guys, and the other table had I think 9. First round you rolled 1d20 twice, once for your vertical placement, once for horizontal. You pick one figure and place them, then the next guy goes, etc. Then it was random who went first. Luckily. the guy next to me ended up going first, meaning I got to go last. The first turn immunity rule was still in effect, so no one could touch a figure in their starting square. Of course we saw a lot of people just sit and not move. Not much fire the first round. I actually got fairly decent placement, most of my figs were in one back quarter of the board. Only one who wasn't anywhere close was Mandarin and LE Supes.

My first order of business was to take out outwit. So I targeted the nearest Mandarin to me with LE Supes, and took him back to soaring when done. That way, he was out of outwit range unless someone moved. I formed up the rest of my team of Thor, MM, Mandarin and Kang back off to one side. Battle pretty much got crazy after that. One of the guys who brought Amazo was on my map, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why he wasn't using HSS, but he wasn't. Guess he preferred the 5 damage with RCE. Anyway, most of that fight I was able to pick off a lot of already hurt pieces. Oh, the judge had put up a leader board with your point totals, so you could kind of see where you were at as you went. It took me a while to get on the board. In fact, everyone else on the map had gotten a kill or two before I ever did.

Thankfully, the last half of the first round went well. I dropped an Amazo, Dormammu, an E Supes, and a couple other pieces. So at the end of round 1 I was in first place, with my friend who came with me in a close second. Oh, and LE Supes and Thor were my big pieces this game, and I only lost Mandarin.

Second round (we only played 2, 2hour rounds). Second round saw me not get as good a placement. The top 7 scores from BOTH maps got placed on one map, and the rest on the other map. Random placement again. Someone outwitted LE Supes' HSS at the get go, which threw that off. I pulled him back to a roof, but miscalculated and he was in range for a charge by V Ulik. So needless to say, Supes was off his HSS speed clicks early. Everyone was kind of gunning for me, so I knew I was fighting an uphill battle. Of note though, was I got Kang placed on a rooftop. Up there were R Supes, V Jean Grey, and I think Despero. I rolled to Pulse Wave and rolled a crit! Knocking everyone off the roof. I guess Kang was making sure everyone knew it was his roof. Manhunter was my stealthed sniper once again, using perplex on teammates where needed.

It was a knock down race between myself and my friend. He'd get a kill and pull ahead, then I'd get a kill and pull ahead. I lost Mandarin early on, but he got stuck by a Dormammu and V Blastaar, along with a SOD Supes, so I knew he wasn't long for this world. Nice thing though, is everyone was concentrating on him, and he was probably my cheapest piece. Notable kills were Thor and LE Supes dropping Ulik, then Thor following up with dropping E Dr. Doom. Manhunter was slowly tinking away at a Dormammu, and was finally joined by Supes and Thor. The finish saw me about ready to finish off Dormammu, when an errant Firelord dropped Thor! I pushed MM and Supes to shoot Dormammu, but still couldn't drop him. I was in the lead by point, but only barely. Then, the following round, the guy using Dormammu pushed to hit Superman, missed, and killed himself. Since I was the last to attack him, I got the 206, which put me solidly in the lead. Judge called time shortly after, much to my friends chagrin. He was based with a very hurt Thanos, and probably would have dropped him in a round. Still, I got to do the happy dance since I pulled out the win. Sure, part of it was luck that the guy controlling Dormammu didn't know his dial too well, but I still did my fair share of killing.

Just so you know, in the second game, there were 2 Amazo's, 2 SOD Supes, a Thanos, 2 Dormammu's, 2 Captain Marvel's, and even a couple of Firelords. Oh, and a Terrax. There was also a V Doomsday I was chomping at the bit to get to with my Superman, but once he lost his mobility from HSS, that was pretty much down the toilet. Still, My piece did very well for me, especially the Manhunter. Everyone was afraid to base him, since I picked up an object before moving into hindering terrain, and then he was just sitting there hitting one round, perplexing his friends while he rested. In this battle his 6 range didn't hurt him much, if at all. Lots of fun. I won an LE Teth-Adam, which is a very cool piece. Thanks again for all your suggestions.

Anyone else been in any battle royals similar to this?

No, but based on your description, I may run this at my venue. Congratulations on the win. Good call on Martian Manhunter. He seems like the perfect figure for this type of event.

Its a really fun format. The judge at my venue has run a couple of these, and they are always very popular with everyone. He always throws in snags, like TA's not crossing universes or something.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of Manhunter. He's expensive, but I definitely think he's worth his points. You don't really want to push him, especially in battle royals, but even if you have to lose the stealth, his numbers at least stay consistent. Let me know if you end up running that format and how it goes. Also, if you need any help/suggestions on setting up the format, let me know and I'll post it.

You could always use R Hawk in stead of batman if you want. Doomsday would work too.

How many action per turn?

Thanks.
