I LOVE the non-linear aspect. You can be heroic and noble, or devote yourself to a life of crime mugging people and breaking into homes . . . just don't get caught!

Early in the game, I was spotted breaking and entering and worked up enough of a bounty that no one would speak to me, since I was a "notorious outlaw." I had to sneak into a city, find a shop to unload my stolen goods, then sneak to the Thieves Guild and get them to use thier shady contacts to remove the bounty and clear my name.

Great fun!

Yeah, breaking the law was fun. Most of the time I'd go to far with it and wouldn't be able to complete the quest though cause of my outlaw status. I also didn't like the fact that it was imposssible to hit something. I'd swing my sword or Axe or what have you like 10 times and maybe hit my foe twice if that. It seemed impossible to hit someone.

That's because your weapons skills were too low. Gotta improve them either by fighting or paying for training.

So, yeah, I posted somewhere that I'm replaying FFVII.

I've only played like 5 minutes when I bought it back in '97. So, for 9 years, it's been gathering dust. I'm still on the first disc, just won my first Chocobo Race. Gonna look for Sephiroth...

(Speaking of, I just did not buy Sephy going postal. It's kinda like Luke becoming Darth Vader in Ep III. Just wasn't convincing, y'know?)

Anyhoo, it's pretty enjoyable so far. The plot's not doing anything for me, but I like the gameplay. The music is boiling my ears (especially the Gold Saucer theme). Lord, thank you for the mute button.

EDIT

To shock: http://www.shiningforcecentral.com

Unfortunately, there's no plans for Atlus or Sega to return to SF's roots. :(

Shining Force Neo is the latest bastardization of the franchise. Moogs says it's an Action RPG, kinda like Shining Tears (ugh) minus the dual player aspect.

*sniff* It's all Shining Soul's fault.

Its to bad, Shining Force was the best tactics game IMO. I don't think I've liked any other tactics game as much as that one.

a buch of characters on the field.
the promotion system was the best, espicially 2s "advanced promotions"
good clean combat, players and enemies didn't miss much.

Just so good. They don't make as good of an action/rpg as they did tactical.

Oh well, Disgaea 2 will be out soon. Thats got me all a tingle waiting for it.

I can help you here.

1) The jungles around Mideel. Pretty good for AP, but not the best spot for materia-levelling.

2) The marshy, upper-left area of the Final Cave - look only for these two enemies: Magic Pots (you need elixers) and the Movers (easy exp and AP, but rare). You can either cheat (which you're kinda doing now) and make infinite copies of Elixers, or you can steal from the Master Tonberries (also located in the Final Cave.)

3) The best place to build your limit bar and find rare items: The Gelnika. I'd avoid focusing on levelling here, since the enemies are amazingly difficult.

The best place was in the carter were you found those magic jars, I just don't remember if you can just kill them or you had to do something else, it's been years since I was there last. I just started a game on the PC. Which brings me to a question, which FF7 is better, PC or PS1?

Well, I guess that's my poor word choice. Power-levelling kinda ruins RPGs for me...it's not fun when enemies can't damage you significantly...

Don't get me wrong, I don't rush through the game and barely survive every battle...but I do like a challenge.

Yeah, 60 is fine. I think I was low 50s when I beat it the first time.

I don't know what to think about 9. Story confused me, even after playing it again. And didn't like getting skills from weapons. Liked that it was all throwbackish graphics wise and the mini card game in that was fun to play.

See I'm a fan of the "job system" anyways so when I heard that X-2 was going to have it I just had to get it. I thought they did a great job updating the job system too for that game.

I didn't like them breaking into song to fix the worlds problems though, that was touching on the corny side.

And the end boss in that was way to easy. Expected a drag down fight and was really dissapointed with it.

The extra ending stuff is un needed and you're not missing anything if you've only seen the basic ending. (don't forget to click when you hear Tidus whistle in the farplane at the end.)

And X-2 is more linear than other FFs as well. Which hurt it some more.

I don't know why this got the sequel. VI would have been a better choice for one IMO.

Worst, I'd go with II. Hated the 'leveling' system in that, and the story was meh.

I'm playing on PC. It was 20 for the game and first two expansions, then 30 for the new expansion (the one with blue mage in it) and it's only 15 bucks a month for me to play (have a brother and girlfriend playing too).

If you get it for XBOX you get all three expansions with the game. A real good buy, and hours of fun.

I'm having a ton of fun with it. I went in thinking I wouldn't. MMOs wasn't for me and I hated people talking about them too. But I sat down and started playing, and between crafting, leveling, and all the little events they do (scoop fishing for goldfish starting on the 25th ^^) It has been really good. Use only grand soul gems, as they hold the strongest and more powerful creatures. If you have access to Mournhold(its an expansion) go to the enchanter and buy Golden Saint summoning scrolls. He is in a building near the museum. For soultrap spells, try and get either scrolls which are in Vivec's mages guild or umbra's sword. Please note I haven't done this in a while so if its wrong I apologize. Oh have lots of cash tons and tons of cash. If you want decent enchanted items it will cost you alot. Also try and find the highest level of armor and clothing, as they can hold the strongest enchantments. For light armor it's glass, for heavy it's daedric and ebony, and medium is bonemold. Also it isn't worth it to enchant items at low levels.

Beta-Ray1378
07/15/2006, 15:05
Also quick soultrapping lesson just in case. Go into an empty building, summon the golden saint, cast soultrap. Then kill the beast, and you have a trapped soul.

It makes us into a sub forum instead of just a thread.

We'll be able to have seperate sections for each "topic" like FF, Square games, RPGs, Table RPGs, and threads for XII and XIII when they come out or to speculate about them.

Most of it I'd like to set up as private, with this thread being the exception. Make this the recruitment thread of the group where everyone can see but if they want to get more involved in the talks going on they'll have to join.

To join a player group, or to request to join (private groups go through the leader who says yes or no to each one) you go to User CP and in there is a link for groups.

I have the Boots of Blinding Speed . . . what's the best way to counter the blindness?
I did some digging and found this."buy any "resist magicka" spell and take that to a spellmaker and remake the spell for 100% Resist magicka for 2 seconds on self. Then all you do is cast the spell and quickly equip the BOBs and the Blindness is negated until you take off the boots again." I'm not sure it will work, because my character doesn't wear boots.

I think it really depends on the characters. I mean, if you get a Knight that really helps out, and that has killer attacks, of course I'll make room for him, but if he's some peon, then I'm probably not going to use him. Take VII for instance. I used Vincent from the moment I got him, even though his Limit Breaks weren't really that controllable, he still threw out some damage, and gave my team some good ranged attacks. I just used him as a pawn for my summons. That way Cloud and Barret could whip out the big gun attacks while he used up all his mp, then went crazy on his limit breaks...

Sure, Vincent looks cool, but, stat-wise, he's pretty much inferior to Tifa.

Tifa has more strength, hp, mp, and magic...but Vincent looks ####ing cool. I didn't use either in my last run through it...

Decisions...decisions...

Yeah, It kinda depends on the game.

For VII I use Yuffie and Tifa. Yuffie becomes a "mage" loaded up with magic magicite, kept back so she won't die.

But yeah, I use later characters. Sometimes its hard to put all of em into a party. Something I liked about VI was the multi-party sections, where you needed to use more than four characters.

I could never beat Ruby Weapon but as far as Emerald weapon goes he was pretty easy you just use gravity on him and it does quad-9 every hit. After awhile it dulls down but those first 5 or so hits cripple him.

The only part of FF7 I never beat besides ruby weapon was getting Knights of the round and that was mainly due to the fact that my PSX memory card got fried as soon as I got an S class Black Chocobo :ermm:.

I cheated against Emerald and duped items with the W-Item trick. Lucky Sevens works wonders, and is super boring to watch.

As for Ruby, she rocked me until a friend pointed out that she's vulnerable to Hades. So I W-Summoned Hades to Stop him, and then Knights of the Round over and over. Sure, the Hades damage is small, but the status effect more than makes up for it.

And yes, Ehrgeiz is one of my favorite games. Sephiroth is like Superman in that he doesn't kick.

My brother beat them, I didn't spend the time to, nor did I do chocobo breeding to get the Knights of the Round materia so I wasn't in a position to kill the emerald.

Did 'bump into' the emerald when leaving the downed plane once. Didn't know he liked to sit in front of it at times.

Collector editions usually cost 10 to 15 dollars more. Like for Oblivion I paid 75 dollars for the collectors edition when the basic game was 60 dollars.

I didn't know Chris “Kao Megura” MacDonald passed away....

He made the best, no, the definitive FFVII walkthrough (http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/final_fantasy_vii_us_walk.txt). European magazines (and even IGN) plagarized his work back when the game first came out. He rewrote the whole FAQ one day before his death. Heck, I remember his KoF stuff was incredible, too.

Damn...I should've paid my respects. May...2004...can't believe I didn't hear about this...

I think I remeber this Walkthrough. Was it ever actually published? Cause when the game first came out, my friend bought it and bought a walkthrough with it. I remember the cover was black. And the normal walkthrough had a white cover. I remember the things inside were different as well. It never once brought up anything about the Ruby or Emerald weapon, but it did give a detailed write up about raising a Gold Chocobo.

It seems so. Here's an excerpt from the FAQ.

Hi, welcome to my newly-revised FF7 FAQ. I rewrote the entire thing from scratch, a process which took an ungodly amount of time to finish. I had been wanting to do this for a long time, but nothing drains your enthusiasm like plagiarism, and lord knows there was enough of that to go around a few years ago. This FAQ was reprinted in several European mags thanks to the hellspawned Future Publishing Co. Ltd, and I had to deal with the (thankfully now defunct) Game Cave giving it away as a "gift with purchase." Nevermind the many idiots who would re-release this FAQ with their name on it, or sites that would mess with it and refuse to take it down (like CheatCC.com). However, it was always my intention to rewrite the FAQ, and it's a good thing too, since v1.6 was
in sore need of some editing.

If you're a FF fan, then you'll have way more fun with FF than WoW. I just can't get into the WoW world but I find the FF world easy to understand from the begining due to all the stuff you're used to seeing in the other games.

Depending on what you get it on (PC, PS2, or XBOX) depends on the initial cost. For PC, which is what I'm on, It cost me 20 bucks for the game and first two expansions then another 30 for the expansion "Treasurs". The initial game comes with the first two expansions already in it.

XBox i think is somewhere around 40-50 bucks and comes with all three expansions already in it.

not sure about PS2

After that you get a month free to play, to see if you like it, then it's only 13 dollars for your first character and a 1 dollar each additional. Currently it cost me 15 bucks a month to play, which is a quarter of what i used to pay to play in Magic tourneis (so i just took the money from that and put it toward XI).

Money is tight with me too, but 15 dollars now isn't much. The inital start up will be, but just save 15 a month and you'll get it quick.

If you're on PC you don't even need the third expansion till later anyways since its only got the three new classes for low levels, the rest is for people over 60 anyways. (I've been there twice, once to see it and once to get Blue Mage, thats it though.)

If you play XI i'll even give you a world pass to Siren, the server I'm on.

WoW might be 'popular' but its all a matter of opinion really. A friend of mine plays WoW and I just don't see what the attraction is. Really the same game when you boil it down, just do you want a D&D-ish type world (whatever happened to D&D online?) wich is what WoW seems to be, or do you want FF type world?

Hope that helps you make you're decision.

XI is a different beast than the others.

If you can get some friends in it, either on-line or real lifers who play then it makes things go smoother.

Levels are gained in parties though, so the amount you can do 'solo' is limited. There is plenty to do in the game. From crafting to fishing to just doing simple quests to the missions in your home nation.

It's not perfect, but it's fun. Honestly, I'm having more fun with it than I thought I would. Blue Mage rocks.

So, I thought it'd be a good idea to fight Emerald Weapon at a party level of 64. He thought it'd be a good idea to kill me in 2 minutes. Yeah.

Hey everyone! Here's the link that Shockman X was talking about.

To see the video he was talking about download the file entitled UO.

Oh and on the Emerald Weapon front, there is a way to kill him in 78 seconds.

Yeah, Mime + one of Barrett's limits.

Unfortunately, Barrett isn't in my main party...

...I rarely use the guy, and, thus, I only have 3 of his limit breaks.

I'm doing okay. I'd really like to be home playing XI right now, rather than working.

I was gonna mention....when I was down in Chicago for the Wizard World Event. I went to the Video Games Live Concert at the Rosemont Theater. I was a great time, the first video game concert I've been to. The had a girl play a bunch of the Final Fantasy songs on the piano, it was great. I love the music from Final Fantasy of course, the other stuff was great as well. They had Zelda, Mario, Metal Gear, Halo and so much more all set to orchestra music.

I actually own a lot of the Final Fantasy Soundtracks. I have FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10, FF10-2, FF11, FFtactics, FFtactics Advance, Final Fantasy 2/4 and some complitaitons. I own some other non-Final Fantasy ones as well. But Final Fantasy music is deffinitely my favorite by far!!! :)

I wanted to go to VGL, but my friends could't afford it. I did meet Tommy at GenCon!

Wow. I just got PSM magazine, and it's got like a 12 page write-up on FFXII. It looks freaking amazing! There is also this write-up about a game called Okami. It's supposed to be like Zelda for Ps2. It looks freaking amazing too! Anyone heard anything about it?

Read it. Looks like they are really trying to give FF replay value now adays.

Two different stories in one game?

Oh, and PSM also had something on the next Disgaea too. Love that series of games.

I purchased a used copy of Metal Arms (that game alway looked intesting), my Lady gave my New Super Mario Bros for my b-day, my brother can't stop raving about Shadow of the Colossus (I'll have to get my PS2 back for that  ), and Madden is out (I can't help it; everyone around me is into football. Go Bears!) Not to mention Lego Star Wars 2 come out in less than a month. Too many good games... with MORE coming out this fall.

Wow. So I read the review of FFXII. It's impressive how much info they put in about the game. I'm kinda indifferent from what I've read. I mean, its got a TON of pros, but there are a few cons. I'm going with the pros though...I think it's going to be pretty amazing....oh, and there's quite a few on FFXIII. It looks pretty sweet also!

So Okami. I guess you're this wolf god that has a person riding you, and you control the elements with a paintbrush and stuff. Yeah, I know it kinda sounds weird, but seriously check it out!!!

That's what was up with Okami: the cool art style! Now I remember. Thanks for the remind.

If we get one of those player group banners, what do we want on it? I'm putting my vote for a Black Mage from the first FF.

Dalandow
08/28/2006, 21:53
The Black Mage would work best I think, since he seems to be an iconic symbol in the FF series.

shock man x
08/28/2006, 22:12
Um, I already kinda asked for a crystal to be the symbol. :nervous:

But lets put it to a vote I guess.

Black Mage is iconic to FF? Maybe you guys read to much 8-bit?

Chocobos, Moogles, crystals, and airships beat out Black Mages.

Black Mage is just a Wizard after all, a staple in any RPG.

Dalandow
08/28/2006, 22:17
Whatever, I don't care. Just as long as we get a tag.

bradley2099
08/28/2006, 22:17
But don't we want to represent more than FF. I like moogles... but they aren't very manly.

Well the clan is Final Fantasy, and Moogles don't show up anywhere but. Crystals show up in many FFs and RPG's in general, so I went with it to appeal to the 'basic rpger' as well as the FF fans.

I mean it could be a sword or something else generic.

We should be happy with it though, as I doubt we'll get to change it.
