With the coming of the new film this week, I thought I'd offer some cool lines from the first film. Unlike FF and Captain America, The Punisher was actually pretty good. I was scared when I first bought it, but now I have gone so far as to replace it on DVD.

Dolph aside (and he doesn't do a bad job), the major complaint was ignoring Vietnam and the lack of the skull on the shirt. Wel the new film isgoing to ignore Vietnam too, and I feel having Frank right as a character is actually more important than the skull. They had skulls on his knife handles.

It was a good story showing Frank's loss of hope and brutality toward criminals, but showing his heart is still there when he goes to save a bunch of children. The movie was done seriously and works. The only corniness comes from some dated dialogue which we wouldn't have noticed back then. You try waching many 70's and 80's shows now with a straight face. LOL!

Heavily inspired by the black and white Punisher Magazines, the movie focuses on the destruction of the NY Mafia, and how that leds to an attempted takeover by The Yakuza.

Great Lines:

"What do you call 125 murders Frank?" -Joe

"Work in progress." -Frank

"125 men. There's a limit to revenge." -Geonni Franco

"I guess I haven't reached mine yet" -Frank

"How long do you think a man can live after you've torn his heart out?" -Alex (about a man's spirit)

"A long time." -Frank

"Al right. I'll do it. But remember. When it's over, you're dead." -Frank to Geonni on saving the children

"While your ancestors were still screwing sheep in the fields, mine were the crime lords of Asia." -Lady Tanaka addressing the remaining Mafia Dons.

"You've refused the drink. Please accept the chaser." -Lady Tanaka putting a gun in DeLeon's mouth. Lady Tanaka is one bad woman.

"If you kill my son you will follow him" -Franco

"And who loses more Mr Franco? Surely not me." -Tanaka

"I ask God why? Why are the good and innocent dead while the bad live on? Where is justice? Where is vengeance? Or have you already answered? Here is justice. Here is vengeance. Here in me. I'm still aiting for an answer." -Frank (combination of the opening and closing monologues)

"Happy hunting Mr P!" -Shake

It;s not high art, but in itself it's a fun movie. A sold story, great fight scenes, and a good crew of actors. Louis Gossett Jr, Kim Miyori, and Jeroen Krabbe give performances as they would in any other film. Dolph Lundgren does alright with the caracter as it is given to him, and I think this may have been Nancy Everhard's first film.

It's worth the ten bucks to own this movie. The comic adaptation was good too with art by Brent Anderson. Awesome movie poster as well with Frank against a fiery orange background, ninjas and mobsters in the background, and the specter of Lady Tanaka overlooking all.

If you check out Brian Bendis' origin for The Ultimate Punisher, you'll see where it is partially inspired by this film. Making Frank a fallen police officer rather than a war vet.

That DVD is actually 5.00 at most places. You can find it at your local Wal-Mart in the close out bin.
