Supreme: The Story Of The Year

Alan Moore comes up with yet another brilliant, entertaining take on a strong guy in a cape.

Top Ten

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll spend hours finding the bazillion cameos.

Any Sandman TPB.

I'd recommend:

* "Watchmen" (it's huge and has a strong re-reading value, especially with the text pages),

* "From Hell" (not Moore's greatest work but it's still good and it's definitely a multiple read plus it's gargantuan :) )

* "Bizarro Tales" (lots of stories to keep your attention)

* "Hellblazer: Dangerous Habits" (one of the more self-contained Hellblazer TPBs and one of its' highest acclaimed stories)

* "Batgirl: Year One" (or as Boneyard calls it "Killer Moth: Year Three"; another fun self-contained TPB plus you said you like the Bat-titles)

* Assorted DC Archives editions - just pick your favourite title or character and be assured of at least a good hour or two of 4-colour fun (some of my personal favourites: All-Star Comics, Sgt. Rock, Enemy Ace, LSH and the Doom Patrol)

While Sandman is great and I almost always recommend people give it a try, I should warn that it's essentially a huge story and so you need to be careful to pick up the right TPB's: "Fables and Reflections", "Dream Country" and "World's End" may be your best choices as they're composed of stories that can be read as "self-contained" (though later you'll find they do, indeed, factor into the big overall scheme). Fantastic reads with plenty of story, fabulous art and true rereading value.

Morrison's JLA run in TPB is good, but if you don't like Morrison it might not convert you.

JSA is not bad, but the first couple TPBs are weak. If you like them, the Hawkman trades are good too.

Ultimate X-Men is all good. Ultimate Spider-Man is all good (7-8 TPBs in either series).

You can get Marvel Masterworks in $13 softcover at Barnes & Noble (but not at comic stores): early Spidey, Hulk, FF, Avengers, etc.

Bendis' run on Daredevil is great: numbers 5-7 of the current series TPBs. 9 is the next one (8 was the weak Mack fill-in).

More Bendis: Alias has at least 4 volumes.

All the Alan Moore ABC stuff is great and in TPB: Top 10, Promethea, Tom Strong, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are the main ones (2-5 TPBs each).

Preacher and Sandman and Transmetropolitan are all popular, although I personally have mixed feelings on all of them. 9-10 TPBs in each of these series.

Planetary is about to release the 4th TPB. Authority has several, although not all the writers on that are equally good. The first couple are pretty fabulous.

There's tons more out there depending on your tastes...

Sorry for the multi-post. I hit "edit" and for some reason it just submitted my change as a "quoted" post (for the record - my edit was to add Marvel "Essentials"). That's twice that's happened to me today...:P :(

Avoid the $50 price tag by going to Barnes & Noble who have exclusive rights to sell the $13 softcover versions which are still very high quality (better paper and production than standard TPBs for sure).

Once again thanks for the recomendations. What are some good team books(ie. good old school avengers, old school xmen, the authority)?

Rokk_Krinn
04/12/2004, 00:15
Lesse, recommended team books from your listings:

*Avengers - "Under Siege" is one of their best storylines showing the Avengers really living up to their name plus it's got one of the best Masters of Evil line-ups (and set things up for the future "Thunderbolts" team waaay down the line); "Avengers Forever" is best if you're really into Avengers as it's a real bombardment of Avengers history, but it's a great story by Busiek. Oh, and as a true Hank Pym fan I can't forget to recommend any of the TPBs featuring Ultron. :)

*X-Men - "Mutant Massacre" is large and jam-packed with action; "Dark Phoenix Saga" is a classic and perhaps the height of Claremont's tale-telling; the assorted "Visionaries" featuring different creators have some pretty solid stories in them as well.

*Authority - look for the Warren Ellis issues for some of the best here, IMHO. He's not everyone's cup of tea but there's a reason he's considered one of the best of the British crew.

Of course you also have the Essentials and Masterworks. The Masterworks are shorter but have better quality paper and are in colour. The Essentials are b&w but have more stories contained in them plus a wider selection of titles. I prefer the Masterworks over their Essentials versions, but I definitely don't mind snagging Essentials that aren't printed in Masterworks form.

The softcover Marvel Masterworks have 2-3 volumes (#3 is out this month... maybe not yet) of Claremont X-Men. They start with #94 and Giant-Size #1 and go from there. This is the best X-Men run ever! (Second best is the Roy Thomas run with Sauron, Trask/sentinels, Magneto in the Savage land...)

BUy the Fables and Y-the Last man trades from vertigo, some of the best books out there right now.

A great independant title out now is called Invicible-It's a great read, along the lines of early Spiderman stuff, BUT the main character-Mark, has some history with super heros I won't spoil it for you but to say it's one of the best indy titles out now-1st trade is out now, second is due out this week on Wed.

JLA/JSA Virtue Vice one shot is out in soft cover now and it's one of the best one shots ever- Think big budget hollywood story and this is it!! Great Art Great Story Great time!!

Wonder Woman: The Hiketia is good and is in Soft back now sort of a Shakesperean Tragedy but the couple pages where Wonder Woman puts Batman in his place are soooooo worth it.

Marvel Boy by Morrison and J.G. Jones (who also did WW-Hiketia) is good sorta like an alternate earth story line but some of the ideas are really neat and inventive- Marvel Boy is a Bastitch and not afriad to get what he wants, or who he has to go through to get it!

These are some no one mentioned yet Good Luck!!

Cerebus vol.1

Captain Britain (Alan Moore/Alan Davis)
Captain Britain (Delano/Davis)

These two TP's were printed some time apart so there is no volume numbering, but the Moore book comes first storywise)

Planetary (all of it, but read it in order)

The Essential Captain America vols 1 & 2

The Essential Howard The Duck

Anything and everything by Frank Miller

Supreme: The Story of The Year
The Return of Supreme

Both of these are by Alan Moore and are the test run for the format he uses later in Tom Strong.

Briel

The entire Cerebus saga is a must read, but the later books will be difficult to get into with noise and distraction on a bus.

Now I am a HUGE comic fanboy...

BUT--

Why don't you read a novel? An 18 hour bus trip sounds like a great time to devote to reading a novel.

My recommendations:

Any of the Mithgar novels by Dennis L. McKiernan

The Hobbit or The Lord Of The Rings (Tolkien)

Alice In Wonderland or Through The Looking Glass (Lewis Carrol)

The Art Of War by Sun Tsu

Hannibal by Thomas Harris

First Flight by Chris Claremont

Howling Mad by Peter David

Lestat by Anne Rice

The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe

The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales

The Annotated Dragonlance Chronicles (Weis/Hickman)

Dune by Frank Herbert

I can give you more if you want. ;)

When I logged off I remembered that Gaiman's novels were very good.

I would also like to add anything by Ernest "Poppa" Hemingway is worthwhile.

Marvels was written by Kurt Busiek, good stuff.
My recomendations are:
Fury (MAX): Hardcore stuff by Garth Ennis
Preacher: More from Ennis
Punisher Welcome Back Frank: Yet again, Ennis
Batman Long Halloween: Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale
Batman Dark Victory: Loeb & Sale
Batman Arkham Assylum
Batman Year One

These are just a few TPB's I own that I read over and over again.

Ro-gan
04/14/2004, 12:09
I agree with oogyboy about Fury (MAX). Great mini-series!

And all his Batman choices are also really good.

I never read Preacher and I am not a big Punisher fan since his very first 5-issue mini back in the mid-1980's.

Castiglione
04/14/2004, 12:16
Well, I loved Preacher, but I never feel right recommending it without warning the recommendee to skip it if he's easily offended. It's brilliant but there is some twisted stuff in there.
Humper-di-doo indeed....
*S*

But, if your skin is pretty thick (or you're an Athiest like me and Garth) and have a black sense of humor, by all means go get it....

I say for a long hall on a bus ride:

Watchmen by alan moore
Kingdom Come
Dark knight returns
Any of the Lord of the rings a origanal books
Wizard mag (for news and jokes lighten the load)
Punisher welcome back frank
Ultimate X-men Vol.1-5 with adam kurbert (nice art)

But really all you need is The Watchmen that will keep the time moving. Punisher for blood guts humor. Ultimate X-men for great art work and pretty good story. I hope this helps.
