Into MtG? I need your help!

Hey all. I was going through my Magic cards yesterday and realized that I have no idea what they are worth. Most of my cards are from around 1993-1997. I also have some from about 4 years ago when I started to play again. I think I have about 1000-1700 cards, but honestly I have no idea.

My main question is do you know a way that I can tell rares from commons and such? How can I tell what set each card is from (or is that important)? Should I get a price guide? If I need a guide which one is the better one out there (Scyre maybe)? I may try to trade them on here after I find out what there worth. I guess I just want to find out if I have anything decent.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Scrye or Duelist has price guides in the back for MtG.

Your best bet is to go to Ebay. Ebay is alot better for gauging how much something will sell for. Scrye tends to OVER-estimate a thing's value.

I played MtG from Beta to around 4 years. Beta and Alpha cards are worth boucoup bucks. Otherwise I couldn't tell you worth.

As far as the sets go, there is a small symbol on th left side of the card between the picture and the text box. That symbol will tell you what set the card is from.

As to rarity: Newer sets have a color coded set symbol. Black is common. Silver is uncommon, and gold is rare. Older sets all have black symbols, so you will have to referance a list.

As for prices.....I dunno about MTG cards, but thier prices seam WAY to high/off for HC....

rarity applies to the cards price though some commons are far better than some rares (i would call these trash cards). you could try inquest. most cards from older expansions have higher prices though this is not a general rule. some commons and rares have good value though some dont. examples of good cards are force of will, arcane denial (alliances), living death (tempest), hymn to tourach, order of the ebon hand (fallen empires), reya dawn bringer (invasion), nevinyrral's disk (alpha, beta, unlimited, revised, 4rth, 5th edition) and the list goes on and on....
