View Full Version : Fond childhood comic book memories thread
Is there a particular comic book you read as a kid or teenager that you have a really fond memory of?
I remember a Sgt.Rock I read when I was about six. He and Easy Company were trapped in a bombed out building by the Germans and had to fight their way out. I don't remember any details beyond that, but my six-year-old brain was so impressed by it I recounted the plot in detail to my parents and sibling several times over the next few days.
There was a Turok, Son of Stone from a few years later where Turok and Andar had to hop a ride on the backs of a couple of stampeding Triceratops to get away from a hostile tribe. I couldn't get enough of Turok when I was a kid.
A Neal Adams illustrated Batman story called (I think) "Night of the Reaper" included an image of the villian in a Grim Reaper costume, standing over Robin with his scythe swinging, that kept me awake that night. Creepy as could be.
Anyone else have any good childhood comic memories?

I remember now a old issue of Friestorm the Nuclear Man when someone basically melted. Freaked me out for days to come.
But my fav was I was stilll 12 when Image first started, and I got Cyberforce #1, and Impact came running full steam ahead and ran straight through a van containing the bad guys. It was the sweetest thing I'd ever seen.

Well my first comic book ever has become my favorite hero of all time. I first read an old Shazam and Captain Marvel is sill one of my favorites. I think I have the issue even though I sold my collection long ago and had to start again fresh. The old Marvel Family books were great fun as a kid.

My very first comic ever was read when I was around 5 or so, I think, which puts this somewhere between 1985-87. It was a ratty old Daredevil book, and I read it so hard and so often that the cover came off. I don't still have it :disappoin , and I haven't been able to track down another copy, because I have no clue what the issue number was. All I remember is that it had Daredevil facing off against a male Turbo, the precurser of the girl-version of Turbo who eventually joined the New Warriors. I think Turbo was the name, anyway. It ended with a shadowy guy in a monitor womb watching the fight and making sinister plans. If anybody remembers what issue that was, I'd be a really happy camper.
The oldest comic of mine that I still own is a copy of a Secret Origins annual starring Flash. It had a story with Wally seeing a psychiatrist to try and understand why he was getting slower, and the psychiatrist pretty much laid out that Wally was scared of surpassing Barry's memory, or something to that tune. It had a copy of Rudyard Kipling's poem, "If," which became my personal favorite poem. I keep a framed copy on my wall, to remind me what integrity is all about. It also featured a re-telling of Barry's death through his eyes, as well as his origin. It was a phenominal book, and hooked me on comics permanently.
My first comic was Superman #338. Supergirl and Superman were using Braniac's shrinking gun to reverse the effects on Kandor and move it to a planet where the Kandorians could live.
I remember thinking how cool Supergirl was. I was aroung 5 years old. I lost the cover and then the comic years ago. I looked for the comic erratically for the last 5 years in comic stores but couldn't remember the issue # or even the title.(Wasn't sure if it was Superman, Action, or DC comics present) A couple of months ago I was killing time in a comic store before I was to pick up my girlfriend. I shuffled through a few then thought maybe I should check out the old Superman comics. Then to my amazement there it was. I recognized the cover like it was yesterday.
I grabbed it without even looking at the price and when the girl at the counter rang it up it came to 81 cents after taxes.
I read through it when I got home and realized I must have read this comic a million times when I was young. I remembered the story clear as day even though I hadn't read it in probably 20 years.
To this day I wonder if I would be able to read if it hadn't been for comics.

I can't remember the actual 1st comic book I owned. My dad used to give them to me all the time. Once when I was sick, he brought home Godzilla#4 from Marvel. It was great! I loved the costume that Dr. Demonicus wore.
Well, as I date myself...
My first and favorite comics were the Electric Company Spider Man books. They were a great intor to comics for a 5 year old kid.
I actually saw one for sale at my comic book store the other day. I still may pick it up.

Even though I'm just barely a teen I do have childhood memories of my first comic. My first comic I got when I was 7 was part of my Subscription to Superman. It was this issue were Doomsday came back from the dead and killed Mr. Myxipixlisk I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I also remember being able to watch Spider-man, Iron man, X-men, and Fantastic Four all in one morning.
cant remember which one but it was of gotham knights when batman had like 3 foot tall horns. I remember him fighting some one that used poisons. it was cool. But the first one i remember was of THE XMEN and it was when Joseph was leader.
i liked joseph. sort of a neat idea to do with Mags, who better have a redone clix to show how much of a badass he is. a crazy, crazy badass indeed

My first memories of comics are:
When Wolverine tried to gut Molecule Man during a battle in Secret Wars#2
Transformers #4 when it showed all ofthe Autobots dead.
And When Hal was absorbed into the Sharks head and still beat him at the end.
The first comic book I ever read Defenders #151. I thought Beast was so cool. He is still one of my favorites even though I don't like how he drawn. He was always more of an ape than a cat.

reading Fantastic Four 320 while eating KFC Chicken Littles. Am I the only one who remembers those? Anyway, I remember seeing Thing punch Hulk, Gray at the time, so hard that he made him puke. Great times!

The first non-humor comic I ever read was GI Joe: Special Missions #2. It was a cool story about hunting down an escaped Nazi in South America. At that point the only Joe stories I knew of were from the cartoon, and this was far better. I wanted to read more, but with limited funds available it would be years before I became a serious comic book reader.
