A sad, sad day. It's rather depressing to see a very entertaining and extremely smart book get shut down. Now my only concern is that hopefully we'll get a decent ending and not just dropped flat.

Maybe this means they will turn it back into the superhero comic book it used to be...

I can hope.

Yeah, cause there's a shortage of nonsensical battle comics.

The fact that Casey evolved the book out of that aspect was one of the things that was entertaining about the series. I understand how it may have been a bit over a lot of people's head's, but making it all sex and violence is a bit done right now.

Tell me this isn't so!
I've been fan of Team 7, etc for years and really liked the direction it had been going. Is Sleeper, Stormwatch, etc. being cancelled as well?

man that soaks the cork! i can just see them relaunchin' it w/ that ###### Majestic leadin' the team and who would they fight? Demonites? WEAK! it dealt w/ real issues and not just spandex. it stretched the line between good and evil. guess the book was too good for its own good. good bye to great book!

Maybe we've not been reading the same comic. What part of WildCATs 3.0 isn't sex and violence?

Agent Wax hypnotising his boss' wife into thinking that he is his boss so that he can sleep with her? Agent Orange being a rampaging killing machine? Grifter having his legs blown practically off? Zealot's various battles with the Coda? Agent Wax killing his boss? Grifter's S&M 'enforcers'? Grifter training the accountant to be a killer?

Yes, it's smartly done. But WildCATs 3.0 is all sex and violence.

This is truly bad news. Who can we petition to keep it going?

You are very correct JacinB, I was talking in the more blah focus of being ONLY sex and violence for sex and violence sake. I'm sorry that I didn't expound upon my original statement. I'm in a frail state currently. ;)

From CBR's Lying the Gutter column:

Last week, my favourite current superhero comics, "Wildcats 3.0" was cancelled.

And on Millarworld, a lot kicked off. Private e-mail from Paul Levitz pointed the decision firmly at Jim Lee, John Nee and Scott Dunbier, while Mark Millar went to town over how DC neuterered Wildstorm at a time when, according to Millar, "it was the coolest company around, beating out even Marvel Knights in fan buzz".

Millar states, "Three VPs in NYC told me personally that they just didn't understand why people bought these books and they did everything they could to kill them." and "They just don't dig the book and are not supporting Joe in any way because, as a VP said to me two years ago, 'the Wildstorm superhero books do nothing to improve the human condition.'"

Ed Brubaker took a similar but more sedate version, "I think the biggest difference between WS the year you were on 'Authority' (and I remember that summer, sitting at the DC table and looking at the enormous crowds around the WS tables) is that WS used to do it's own promotion and publicity. Then it got pulled inhouse. And inhouse is 3000 miles away, so they don't have quite as much time to push WS books, it seems."

But DC haven't had that much of a grasp on "Wildcats," especially since its 3.0 Eye of The Storm relaunch.

When Eye of the Storm was underway, DC bods read Joe Casey's script and were a tad flummoxed by it - all this corporate stuff, guys in suits talking. They came back and said "this does not say to us 'mature reader superheroes'." So they asked Joe Casey to sex and violence it up a bit, and paid Casey and Nguyen for additional work. Which is why there are extra pages in the first issue, presented as a bonus to the reader. It's the scene with Grifter killing a naked hooker. Cut and paste.

So even though DC were saying "Eye Of The Storm means sophistication, not just sex and violence," DC were telling the creators the opposite.

Jim Casey should sit down with Jim Lee, and they should relanch the book with Lee on art after he finishes his Superman run.

Nobody love the Cats like I do, but I felt the stuff with Wax was a lttle out of place. Meaning it just didn't add anything. The maturity of the storylines is great, but I would have ditched the nudity (nothing against it, again it just didn't add or mean anything.)

I would prefer to see the book with Voodoo and Maul rejoining Grifer. Perhaps a downscaling to where they help ou the average joe on the street level.

It will be a shame not seeing Spartan complete his battle against the true villains of the world. The Corporations.

I think the guys in the board room did get what's going on in the story, and didn't like what was being said. The truth hurts.

I'm not overly worried. I fully expect a Wildcats volume 4. It's just a question of what form it will take. The return of Brandon Choi and Jim Lee together again would not be unappreciated.

I had a feeling something was up when Nguyen was pulled off Cats to do Batman.

Hopefully DC isn't going to do to Wildstorm what Marvel did to the Ultraverse.

Wildstorm has been my favorite company and set of characters since it's inception. Well except for Grunge. I always hated him. LOL!
