The idea of this clan is to talk about horror movies, & their ilk. What ones you like/hate, which characters you like/hate, and which ones you'd recommend. Clan code names are optional. And well since I'm the founder, I'll choose one for myself. I'll be... :ermm: , Bela Lugosi.

I'm not too familiar with the clan thing yet. Can anyone join? I dig Horror flicks and have quite a collection of them ranging from good to awful. heh heh But hey, "B" horror flicks have a charm all thier own.
If I get to join, I'd like "Seth Gecko" for a code name. heh heh

Whoo hoo! Maybe talking about horror flix will get me in the mood to break out the crates of VHS tapes. I'm slowly replacing things with DVD but some things are still not (and may never be) available. lol Not sure if there's much of a market for "Chopping Mall" on DVD! heh heh

Speaking of which, have you seen said movie? A true "B" movie but the pay off is one scene in particular.

The Thing! Oh yes, I was rather shocked when I first saw it. I guess I wasn't expecting that which I got. heh heh

lol...Gabe! You gotta love a black and white movie depicting flesh eating zombies. I don't know, there's something about it being B&W that juat adds to it. I'm sure if it was color the effects wouldn't look as good (especially for that time). But watching a ghoul gnawing on a bone and pulling this stringy looking stuff off of it with his teeth was rather vivid for the day. heh heh

Just saw Bones recently. You know, the movie got a bad rap (no pun intended) but I'm not fully sure why. I mean, there are a lot worse and a lot better. It was OK to me for a hokey kind of horror flick. Not great but I had a few good laughs...and isn't that what hokey horror flicks are for? I don't remember the hype (if any) around it when it first came out, maybe the makers were taking themselves too seriously and that's why it got panned so badly?

I just recently found Of Unknown Origin on DVD and have to recommend this movie. It's not fast paced or particularly bloody at all but it's a great movie. Peter Weller stars as a guy who works at a bank who's given a big project that could make his career and then he begins to have problems with a rat in his house and becomes obcessed with it. That's a pretty poor description of the movie, but I don't want to give too much away.

the thing, its been a while since ive seen that movie so my memory is full of gaps and spaces. thats a movie i need to check out and watch again. all i remember is snow, lots and lots of snow. heheh.

jack, there is no way you cant love night of the living dead. that movie is a masterpeice. coming from me, thats kind of a biased opinion seeing how im a zombie fanatic. gotta love those little fellers and their flesh eating tendencies. theyre not evil, just misunderstood. by the way, has anyone seen lucio fulci's "Zombie". if not, i highly recommend it. the shark vs. zombie fight scene is worth the time.

Personally I think the best Horror Movies I've seen are the two Ginger Snaps movies (soon to be three) As you can prboably tell by my Sig. I think they are the best Movies that I know of anyway to come out of Canada. I also like the Friday th 13ths, but they aren't horror anymore, they're Gorefest/Campy fun. But They're not scary. At least that is my opinion of them.

I liek Zombies as much as the next guy, but I actully have a realtivly week stomach. I can watch Movies where someone gets kill horriblely and they show it for a split second, but if they linger on it liek they do in most Zombie Movies when someone gets ripped apart then I have to look away, But even with the amount of slow gore I do like the Night/Dawn/Day of the Deads

coyotejack
05/14/2004, 12:35
My wife is like that, she can handle intense gore scenes if it's done in flashes, but if it lingers too long she has to look away. That means a lot of my little VHS "treasures" have to watched by myself or with my one friend who appreciates a good gorey movie.

I must check out the shark vs. zombie fight though...that is something I haven't seen! heh heh

If anyone ever encounters a movie entiteled "House of Psychotic Women", don't pick it up thinking it is what the title implies. It's actually a very slow moving, badly dubbed , Brazilian "psycho-drama" (and I use that term loosely). lol

Gabe Sapien
05/14/2004, 13:33
wow, squeamish fans of horror? can it be? i for one am a gore monster, love the sight of it. seeing how im a product of todays society, and the fact that i know its only a moviethe gore isnt too bad when ya think about it.

i have heard good things about ginger snaps as well jason, but i dont really have the time to go out, rent it and sit down and watch the movie. i hear it has werewolves in it right? if so, then i might just make time for it.

jack, if you dont like intense gore then dont go watch zombie, its pretty graphic but nowhere near as graphic as the end of Dawn of the Dead, or Day. well, there is this one scene with an eyeball and a sharp wooden spike... but i digress. heheh.

JasonVoorhees
05/14/2004, 15:36
Just to warn you Ginger Snaps Werewoves are a little different from the usual, and it takes the mystery out of it a bit. But it's still a #### good movie, just don't be expecting Full Moon Type werewolves, and if you like gore the start of the Movie has a good amount of it, the Sequal has a bit less. And the Prequel isn't out (In America) yet. It's defiantaly worth a rental if you can find it. If not it's only around $10 to buy and it's worth it.

coyotejack
05/14/2004, 16:58
Gabe, I LOVE the gore! heh heh My wife is the one I have to consider. My friends (other than one in particular) are pretty squeamish as well. It usually ends up bieng myself and my lone gore-lovin' friend sitting up all night watching gruesome horror flix on our new home theater system.
My wife, though not into gore, loves horror movies in general. She absolutely loves to be scared out of her seat. lol
Here's a question for our Horror fans:

What are some of your favorite scenes?

JasonVoorhees
05/14/2004, 17:48
These two will sound Fanboyish, But the part in Ginger Snaps 2, where Brigiite stands up to the Wolf that's tring to mate with her. And in Friday the 13t part 7(Or 6) Where Jason Smashes the Sleeping Bag with a camper in it into a Tree.

coyotejack
05/14/2004, 18:54
Nice Jason...heh heh.

One of mine is basically the entire scene from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre when they pick up the hitchhiker until they throw him out. That little dude gives me chills.

Another from ol' Texas is Leatherface's first appearance where he "welcomes" the trespasser with a mallet to the head and drags him off, slamming the door behind him.

what is my favorite scene? can you pose a harder question jack? heheh. i dont wanna cop out and say "i cant choose, theyre all great!" so i think my favorite scene is in dawn of the dead when the bikers break into the mall. lotsa gore and zombies trying to eat manequins(sp?). fun for all ages. by the way, has anyone seen "the crazies" by george romero? i hear its good but i want a personal opinion on it.

coyotejack
05/18/2004, 17:12
The Cell is a trippy movie. I need to watch it again and pay better attention. I was doing something when I was trying to watch it.

I haven't seen "The Crazies" yet. I need to locate it first. lol

Just watched Friday the 13th, Part 6: Jason Lives the other night. You know...that movie is pretty awful. It's like in parts it wants to be campy (like the James Bond-esque opening) which is fine, and other parts it tries to take itsself seriously (like Jason staring at the little girl hiding under her covers...a great scene)...but fails to do either nicely. I'd rather watch the original, or Freddy vs. Jason! That's a fun movie!

Zombie is a great movie Gabe. Loved the shark fight with the zombie as well as the topless swimmer :) . Plus, how it ended was pretty cool. If you all like gory movies i recommend cannibal holocaust. Very disturbing movie. My friend had a banned version and PETA would not be pleased. A couple of my favorite scenes are in halloween when jamie lee curtis is hiding in the closet and in jason VIII when jason is on the roof fighting the boxer and the boxer is kicking his ### but after like 50 punches he gets tired and with one punch jason knocks his head off.

Yeah, it's good that you added the black and white, silent film descriptor.

When I was in high school, I saw some Alyssa Milano movie on Cinemax that had "Nosferatu" in the title. Anyways, being a teenager, that movie was awesome. When I was in college and I heard some film dorks and cult fans speaking of Nosferatu I thought they were speaking of this film. And I jumped into the conversation:

"Dude, you see Alyssa Milano naked several times--it's a totally awesome movie! But, I don't think that qualifies it as a great or classic movie."

They looked at me with confounded expressions. Yeah, my ignorance of the real Nosferatu film made me look like a total weirdo and perv.

Nonetheless, that is still the film I think about anytime somebody does mention Nosferatu.

:)

Milano is a total hottie......

I like the movie "Dead Alive", in it's weird and trippy way.

Candyman 1&2 were good.

One of my favorite scenes in horror movies though is in The Shinning, were Jack is locked in the freezer, and his wife and son are running away (I think they were in the maze by this point) and it's at that moment were you think the movie is just Jack goin' insane and tryin' to kill his wife and son, but at then the freezer door opens, on it's own, and you have to realize you really have no idea what is going on.

I also like the lesser known horror movies, Razorback, and Rawhead Rex.....the ones before "Direct to video" was the craze for cheap horror carp. I have seen Ginger Snaps 1 but not the 2nd one......guess I have something to rent this weekend!

I haven't seen the new Dawn....but I did see the remake Night and was pleased with it, I am lookin' forward to Dawn coming out on video sometime soon.....Hopefully.

Unfortunately, no.

But, why bother when I've seen the best version? :)

Seriously though, I've seen the film available at my local independent video store that specializes in hard-to-find and cult videos, but I've never acted on the inclination to rent it. Seemingly, I always end-up renting other stuff that I'm later disappointed with.

I highly recommend reading "The Shining."

Great book. After FINALLY reading the novel a couple years ago I can't watch Stanley Kubrick's version of "The Shining."

Kubrick took MANY liberties that ruined the book.

I say the same for "Hannibal." I still can't believe Thomas Harris sold out to Hollywood and let them butcher his "Hannibal" novel. I nearly walked out of the theatre 15 minutes into the movie.

skyounkin
05/19/2004, 05:14
I should read The Shinning.

Didn't like either Hannibal the movie or the book, loved Silence and Red Dragon though both books and movies....

More movies that were scary fun, Original Nightmare on Elm Street.....I was LIVING on Elm street at the time, HAH!!
The scene with the blonde in the body bag still creeps me out. I think the best Werewolf effects still go to The Howling, despite the super effects of hollywood today, I love all the old Harryhausen stuff, it's all classic!

05/19/2004, 05:55
Red Dragon and The Silence Of The Lambs were both great as movies and novels.

I enjoyed Hannibal the novel. I liked it the best out of all three. It gave Hannibal more personality and actually had me rooting for him almost from the beginning.

The first Nightmare On Elm Street was great. A New Nightmare was really good, too. And, surprisingly, I really liked Freddy vs. Jason. I laughed throughout this whole movie when I saw it in the theatre. I actually bought the DVD when it came out and have watched it 3 times since.

I thought the best werewolf transformation was in "An American Werewolf in London." Really good movie, too.

Nosfertu was good, I got my copy for about 5 bucks (With Type O Negative doing the background music. . .) The Music I got changed the tone a bit, but it was watchable, and you could alwyas just turn the volume down and get the same point. Besides what I allready menchioned, alot of the old Hammer Stuff was good. . .Or so bad it became good. A movie called "The Satanic Rites of Dracula" falls into the so bad it's good catagory.

The new Dawn of the dead was an excellent movie. (For a Remake anyway) It isn't as rewatchable as the first, because it doesn't have any "social messgaes" like the first one had, but it's still good as a movie, if you can get past the fact that the mall has glass doors. . .and you see a zombie nearly Smash a windshield with it's barehands. . .

As far as something new to add into the convshion to whats good? This isn't really a horror movie. . but I'd consider it horror becuase the idea behind it is #### scary, even if the movie itself isn't, It's a Japanese Movie called "Battle Royale" It's got a good amount of blood for the gore fans. It's pretty much about an alertnert present (the book it's based on says this not the movie itself) where the Axis powers won world war 2, and the "Warrior Spirt" still exsits, but the children of the day stopped beliveing in it, so it get it back one class is picked at random, and they are all given different weapons and fight to the death. Soem Weapons or great like the Machine Gun. . .some are bad, liek the Pot Lid. But it's a great movie, even if some people wouldn't consider it horror.

Alyssa Milano's "Embrace of the Vampire" was awesome!

coyotejack
05/20/2004, 20:05
Ricky-OH! is a great gore movie. It's a must see if you want to see someone get strangled by entrails. Sounds simple enough, yeah? Wait, it gets better...the strangler in question is using his own entrails since he was just cut wide open! That's a BAD man. lol

Nosferatu is awesome...creepy, creepy movie. I own the Type O- soundtrack version which does make it rather interesting. On that subject, has anyone seen Shadow of the Vampire? Willem Dafoe plays Max Shreck...but he's actually a vampire, not an actor playing one. I thought it was an interesting concept and loved the movie.

Thanks Basil, wasn't sure. I just knew it was sudden. I really enjoyed his work on the show.

Well, my wife and I watched feardotcom.......all I can say is, I'm glad I didn't pay for it. I don't like panning a film unless it has no redeeming qualities, and I don't think this deserves to be completely trashed. It had a lot of stuff in there that could have made it good, but it seemed like nothing ever really came of it. It's difficult to explain...it's almost like they were TOO vague with the use of flashing images and ideas. And it moved really slow on top of that...that's the first movie in a long time that I found myself nodding off during. :p

Anyone else catch this film? What did you think of it?

Very slow and methodical. Unfortunately, if you are wanting upbeat...it won't give you what you want. I enjoyed 6th Sense, but I can't watch it often. It's one of those "I saw it, cool idea, maybe I'll catch it again someday" types of movies. Not something I'm going to track down for entertainment value. But then that director's movies (can't even begin to spell his name...M. Night __________) are all very methodical and precise and slow. I enjoy them when I'm in the mood for them.

if you want to laugh at the premise and by the end be creeped out get Prince of Darkness (john carpenter) - has alice cooper in a crazy creepy homeless guy (briefly) and satan is a green pulsing ooze in a glass tube that is being researched by scientists. ending is weird and kind of disturbing

Love this movie. I bought the VHS tape from a closing Video Store and was so happy. It definately has an interesting spin to it. feardotcom was the WORST movie I have seen in a long time.

I complained very loudly throughout the whole movie while watching it at home.

Someone told me to just turn it off and stop watching it since I am obviously not enjoying it.

My reply was:

"I have to keep watching it. It HAS to get good. At least I have to see the ending and then it will all make sense." I was wrong on all counts. That was soooooo many wasted minutes of my life.

ro_gan, I feel your pain. I try to see the positive in things...even though it can be very difficult. I agree, I thought to myself "It'll get better", etc...and my wife and I both ended up being let down. I thought the "Doctor" could have been a good character and it seemed as if he might be interesting but they didn't really do much with him. For someone that was supposed to be the cop's main drive and worst enemy...he ended up being pretty lackluster. The actor who played him was creepy, but it doesn't help if they don't use your character well. It's like it had the right ingredients...but they weren't used properly. Like baking a cake...you have the stuff and decide to mix it all together except the eggs and bake it, THEN add the eggs on top after; it just doesn't work. lol Sorry for the odd analogy! ;)

I like "Halloween"...and the movie that scares me silly to this day is "The Omen". I used to be really scared of "The Exorcist", but not anymore. Although it was freaky when Regan went down the stairs upside down in the redone version. I finally saw two cheesy 70's movies that upset me as a kid, "Tourist Trap", about these mannequins that kill people, and "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" about these small demons that are let out of a bolted over grate and go after "Sally" who inherited a house". They were so bad I couldn't believe it, but then again I was probably 5 whenever I first saw them. "Silence of the Lambs" is awesome, but I don't think I would classify as horror.

At least 10 years.

I, too, saw this a couple times as a child and thought it was REALLY scary. For the life of me I couldn't remember the movie's name so I could either buy or rent it.

The other cheesy and campy movie that always freaked me out was "Motel Hell." Luckily, this movie is on TV frequently. This is still a great movie that has stood the test of time.

Gotta show the love for Full Moon productions giving us Dollman vs Demonic Toys and the Puppetmaster series. That being said, George Romero and Tom Savini are my heroes. And who here doesn't enjoy Sorority House Massacre? On a side note, what do yall think of Return of the Living Dead? The guy's g/f in the third one that turned into a zombie was flippin hot! (before the zombie thing, after she turned, it was all "I hurt and I'm so hungry and I wanna eat someone and why don't you ever take me shopping?"

I'm trying to secure myself a copy of the only TV movie I can think of that creeped me out as a kid: Dark Night of the Scarecrow!

Has one of the best endings for a spooky flick...especially for TV! Anyone remember this little gem? Larry Drake (LA Law) was in it.

Oh, Dark Night of the Scarecrow! Larry Drake was hiding out disguised as a scarecrow in the field, and some dude killed him with a pitchfork, and didn't all the guys that were in on it get killed the same way?

Ro_gan, I actually bought Tourist Trap for like 10 bucks somewhere (Suncoast maybe??) I ended up giving it to my cousin. When the mannequins opened their mouths super wide it was so freaky.

Pete thought Dirk Benedict was in SSSSSSSSSSSS, is he right?

Child's play freaked me out as a kid. . .More becuase I had the "little Buddy" doll that looked just like it, and was watching the Movie while holding that thing ayt the same time. . so it was a kinda love/hate thing. . .Yeah. . .as weird as that sounds. Oh Yeah to anyone going to a Beach/Boardwalk type place (I live in Jersey so I take it for granted) there are stuffed dolls of Jason and Freddy on some wheels and claw machines. If anyone was intersted they have those hard plastic heads and arms, but they are cool little things anyway. I've never seen most of the movies you are talking about. I'm really too poor to go out and buy B Movies on a whim anymore because the only palces that I can find them Locally sell them at out ragus prices, except a select few (Ginger Snaps, Really old B Movies (60s), and some of the worset of the old Hammer Movies, and Blacula) most of them aren't worth the time of day, but soem of them are real Gems, Blackula is great becuase it tried to present itself as scary, but it's so rediucy and expliton movie that it just fails on every leval expcet as funny.

I remember this movie now. I saw it 2-3 times growing up. This was actually a good movie. And scary, too.

I'll head over to Suncoast this weekend and try to find it. This movie really scared me as a wee little tyke. I can't believe it took me over 10 years to finally learn its title.

Pete thought Dirk Benedict was in SSSSSSSSSSSS, is he right?

Yep, Dirk Benedict was the lead in this movie.

My brother and I saw this in the theatres when it first came out. We were laughing through the whole movie. Chucky (aka: Charles Lee Ray) had some of the greatest one-liners.

One of the best lines was during the end of the movie when Chucky was riding in the elevator and this elderly couple got on and then off at a different floor. The old woman mumbled to her husband: "What an ugly doll." You can then hear Chucky say under his breath: "####, you."

My brother and I started laughing so hard at that one-liner.

Sorry everyone, I haven't learned how to put someone else's quotes into a post. Anyway, Tourist Trap scared me so badly when I was a kid that I would always keep my eyes on the mannequins in the department stores, just to make sure they weren't watching me. There's a house around the corner and they've got some mannequins on the porch, and I must say I don't really like to drive by at night.........lol

I found it amazing that so many people claimed the movie was "dumb" or "not scary" about a year after the movie was out of theatres. heh heh These were the same people that were scared stiff in the dark when they watched it on the big screen. My wife and I went to see it when we were still dating. Great date movie...lol. Anyway, there were people crying in the theatre because they were so scared. One guy was sitting about 5 seats away from me and his friend was getting on him because he was crying. I haven't been to too many horror films that seemed to have such an effect on a crowd before or since. Say what you might about Blair, but it made for one heck of a psychology experiment just watching the crowd.

Why yes there is and that was the only reason I watched the whole thing. She was naked several times. The funny thing about the movie is I saw it when me and my girlfriend went to go visit a good friend of mine thats a Marnie and I wanted to see him before he shipped out. Me and him are seasoned veterans of most of what life can hand you. So any way while we're watching this travesty me and him keep talking about how hot the chicks in the movie are and kept rewinding the sex scenes and such. Well both of our GF's are like its bad enough we have to watch this #### with out you rewinding it all the time.....I'm not too sure where this story was going. I guess if I had to sum it all up it would go like this. Yea the chicks are hot and naked enough to warrant a rental.

When I was at the Star Wars Celebration II 3-day Convention back in 2002 in Indianapolis I met the 2 guys that created The Blair Witch (the Director & Producer).

Really great guys that put on a Forum for their fans.

They had nothing to do with Blair Witch 2. They sold the rights to Hollywood and were supposed to have full say on the making of Blair Witch 2. Hollywood decided they did not like their ideas and kept giving them a hard time everytime they had suggestions/ideas/input.

Eventually they both said: "Fine, do it your way. Don't put our names as connected to the movie because this movie will stink!" [or something like that, it has been over 2 years so my memory isn't the best].

They did tell their fans that there will be a Blair Witch 3. The movie will be the story of the Blair Witch and where the origin came from. They will be producing/directing by themselves, but did not give an idea when it will be done.

I have seen all of the Faces of Death series. It was all the rage when I was growing up with the bannings from stores and stuff so it made most kids seek them out. lol

Along the same vein as these would be Mondo Cane. Not as gruesome as Faces, but bizarre as all heck.

I enjoyed Blair Witch 2. It wasnt that bad. It was just really simple. The goth girl was well worth seeing it. Her running around naked, getting rammed, and eating an owl. VERY Kinky. Also I would like to be the Leprachan of the horror clan. Leprachan in the Hood. Ice-T at his finest as he pulls knives, guns, and bats out of his Afro. Plus they made a sequal. When I saw The Blair Witch it was right after I went to the one website that provided all the police reports and documentation that made it appear to be a true story.

I almost called up a Maryland State Trooper friend of mine to see if there really were police reports which would make it a true story. I decided not to because I didn't want to ruin the movie for me.

One of the guys I worked with back then told me he just saw the movie. I was asking him if it was a true story or not. The only thing he told me (because he didn't want to ruin the movie for me) was: "Just stay to the end of the credits."

My ex and I went to see it that night. It was definitely a scary movie IMHO. The credits had the answer though:

The persons, events, names in this movie are fictional and are not associated with any real people, places, events in real life.

I think the movie worked in the same way the original Chainsaw Massacre or the original Psycho worked. Your mind fills in the "blanks". I love gory movies but sometimes a movie that doesn't show the devastation and allows your mind to fill in the blanks can be more brutal. With Blair Witch your mind is frantically trying to decipher what's happening and with all the chaos (camera's shaking, screaming, etc...) it assumes the worst. Good stuff. I like it and still defend it to this day against the "nay-sayers". Plus I take solace in the fact that those who grumble the loudest about the movie were the most scared. heh heh :p :p :p

Haven't seen any? Think Faces of Death with a semi-coherent story. The only two I can think of off the top of my head are Mermaid in a Manhole and The Flower of Flesh and Blood, you can these two in a double-pack of off Amazon. I was just thinking about a couple of movies from the 80's with Karen Black.....Trilogy of Terror (with that Zuni witch doctor doll) and Burnt Offerings, about this house that has to kill its occupants in order to renew itself. I haven't seen these in years but wouldn't mind seeing again. Does anyone remember "the Children"......a school bus went thru some sort of green mist and the kids turned into zombies, with black fingernails? That one is really old, probably mid 70's. When I was a kid, I can remember on Saturday afternoons, some scary movie always came on, and just before the movie started, there was this trailer....I guess, and it said "Chiller" on the screen, and the scary part was that this creepy hand would come out of the ground and snatch up all the letters in the word "Chiller" and you would hear this evil laugh. It may have been a regional thing, I grew up in NY and NJ. Flashbacks of childhood..................

I just thought I'd add my .02 in

Blair witch 1 - Loved it...It was a mind f'
Blair witch 2 - loved it....it was underrated.
Re-animator- That movie was super cool when I was little, now that i'm older it's kinda cheesy, and I still Love it
Nightmare on elm street....loved em all
Friday the 13th Love em all ( watch jason X it's actually funny, esp. in the hologram sequence near the end where jason takes 2 naked chicks in a sleeping bags and beats them with each other  )
Faces of Death.....some of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I can not watch one without nearly pissing myself from laughing to hard
All of George Romero's movies....classic nuff said
I loved the howling.
The omen....My older brother used to call me Damien...he said I was evil...:devious: I still am
The exorcist....scared the hell out of me as a child..When I watched the re-issue the "spider-walk" scene completly freaked me out.
The Ring I love this movie.....The only problem I have with it is Samara ( the little girl) who is also the voice of Lilo from Lilo and Stitch, IN the trailers said "everyone will suffer" and they cut it out in the movie.

Since we are giving codenames out I want to be Darkness from Legend (a;though not really a horror movie, it's got Tom Cruise in it so it kinda counts as horror)
