9th semi annual Custom Clix Contest - Order of the Golden Puppet Master

Hear ye, Hear ye!!! Let the 9th -can you believe it- 9th Custom Clix Contest (Tri-C) begin. Time once again for the Order of the Golden Puppet Master Contest to rear it’s bald head. I'd like to take this moment to thank wk for reprinting baldy so I don't have to switch prizes.

**Special note – I’m extending voting to all previous 1st place winners of the Tri-C competitions 1-8 (run by myself, RCTpool, Choanata, or Proditor). Previous 1st place winners may vote whether they enter a mod or not – please simply post that you are claiming this right prior to the entry deadline. A few past winners have mercifully stopped entering, hopefully this will encourage them to return and participate in some way.

This contest is meant to be a competition between mods, more so than a competition between people - please keep that in mind. To compare people, we'd all have to do the same mod and I don't think anyone is interested in that sort of competition. This is for fun and to encourage modeling and modelers who hang out here in the Artisan's Guild. The prizes are for the most part worthless, but fun to get and they make for interesting decorations and conversation pieces - play them in a game and freak people out LOL. "This is my Golden Puppet Master that I received for . . . . . "

(Entry deadline for the 9th contest is June 13th – 6/13– midnight GMT.)

Please submit a picture or two of your mod below, (most people like to see a back and front for judging purposes). Also if you are doing an obscure character, a reference picture also helps for judging purposes, but is not required.

Entry parameters:

1) One mod per person.
2) Mods must be relatively “new to the web”. Any mod posted and linked to this site or any other modeling site prior to May 16th, is ineligible. We’re looking for some new stuff here, not prior contest material.
3) Dial is unimportant.
4) One modeler per mod, so no collaborations please.
5) Mods should have at least 10% alteration in original form and a completely new paint job - strict repaints are not eligible.
6) Half your mod must be from stock WK figures and it should contain some piece or part from a stock Unleashed figure. It’s ok to use putty and other parts so long as they don’t become over 50% of the mod.
7) Mods should be associated with the superhero genre – either in comic print or through tv/movies. No Star Wars clix, Wrestlers, deities etc.
8) Deadline for entries is –(June 13th – 6/13/2004 Midnight GMT)– your mod must be posted with links to pictures, as a reply to this post, by that time. That basically gives everyone three weeks and 4 weekends. The 14th is a Monday, late that night, EST, I’ll start the voting.
9) After the 13th, each applicant, or person who submitted, plus previous 1st place Tri-C winnners, will cast a votes for the best 5 mods. You may not vote for your own sorry, and you can not vote if you do not have an entry in the contest or are not a previous 1st place winner in a TriC contest. You will have to vote for rankings of 1-5, points will be awarded for each slot (5 pts for first, 4 for 2nd etc). *Important: If you do not vote or your vote does not contain 5 placements, your entry will be removed from the contest. You will be given an id number after Pming your vote, (more instructions as voting grows near), all votes will be posted publicly but with the ID number not your name.

There will be 5 trophies for 1st through 5th place.

Any ties will result in awarding the highest possible prize to both and bumping the next tier of prizes in exchange – for example, we might have two second place mods, but if we do there will be no third place awarded.

First prize - Puppet Master primed and painted in gold apple barrel paint
Second prize - Puppet Master primed and painted in silver apple barrel paint
3rd prize - Puppet Master primed and painted in copper paint (I don't have bronze)
4th and 5th place – clay colored Puppet Masters.

But in addition to these wonderful prizes you will be immortalized in Proditor’s Contest Hall of Fame, and colleagues, and win the adoration of your friends for you will be "The Golden Puppet Master of HCRealms" (that and a buck will buy you a cup of coffee at any convenience store)- at least until we have another contest LOL

At least one picture - two works best, most people will automaticly rank a figure low if they don't get to see all the way around - after all, the back might stink. But it's entirely up to you.

Likewise the reference picture is up to you. If you are doing Superman, a reference picture is probably not necessary. If you are doing Music Master - :confused: It's probably in your best interest to provide a reference picture. Past experience shows that reference pictures for obscure characters get people votes. It's not easy to just pull some peoples pictures off the web if they are not a title character and you have to know what the figure is supposed to look like to accurately judge it. Again, totally up to you, but if it's someone 8 of 10 people don't know, you're probably better off adding a reference picture.

"New to the web" just means freshly done mod by you, not character never attempted before. A number of people have pretty good size collections of mods, it would be easy enough to pick your best and enter it. This is more about what can you come up with new over the next 3 weeks. Adds a little pressure and excitement - we've all had those mods that were great ideas that fizzled or those that started out blah and really turned into something note worthy - let's see what happens over the next few weeks!!!

Well, here is the first major mod i have made in a long time.....with a well needed revision.

He is made from Mostly a Dreadnaught, sculpy and the Unleashed pieces i used were Hawkgirl Wings for his "Hair".
His little minion is all sculpy.

Yes, you can remake a current character or a character that has already been modded by someone else.

The only restriction is that anything you enter can't be something that you've already done and posted before the contest start date. I'm just trying to get people to submit fresh work.

Hello,

This is one of my first not just a repaint mods.

His Head, is from the Unleashed Green Lantern (Hal). I started this whole mod because I felt like I had to paint his temples white.

His torso is from Avalanche, for the shoulderpads.

His legs are from Corsair, because he has those high boots.

His "Emerald Energy" is from parts from Iceman. One of the blasts is from Iceman's arm ice blasts. The other is from parts of it, to make some energy, ready to be blasted. His "ion trail" is from, well the iceman bridge thingy. I kept some of the cracks there to have some sort of crackling effect (in View 2 I think, back view). I dilluted the green, so that the parts are still semi-clear translucent green.

As some of you have seen in my mods, I like to have something glow in the dark. His "Emerald Energy" does glow, but since it was dilluted to make way for translucentness, it doesn't glow as much that my digicam can pick it up.

I sometimes field multiple medics, and it makes me freakin' mental that they all look the same. I HATE that. Makes me feel like a cheesemeister, just for havin' a couple of eight-point medics out there. Making them LOOK different makes me feel a lot better. Plus, it offers considerable distraction for my opponent. Psychological warfare, if you will....:devious:

Bodies are Troia and Aphrodite IX, sanded down with a dremel tool. Arms from Sydney Savage, Troia, and various other female HeroClix figures. The medical kit is paper, the syringe is made from 1/35 scale machine gun parts, and the Medic's weapon is a Warhammer 40K Space Marine Bolter.

Nurse's hats are simple sheet styrene. The helmet is all that remains of the original Easy Company Medic.

This is one of the coolest contest I've seen since I first noticed them. Magneto is sweet. Looking at that Cable makes me realize that X Force has become one of my favorites story lines of all I've ever read. The Cosmic Spidey, and the paradise X Cap are very well done too. Great contest!

Quick info on cap:
Body (human torch) people say no to doing this (over used), but the body works so well for that version so I couldn't pass it up for a pose like that. It's ashame his arms and head bent back (I heated them up and all and they just kept going back to normal), they were orginially pointed down.

Wings: Hawkman (angel's wings were to clunky)

Cap's Flag Cape:
Ribbon from the wall or marts. for a $1.25 I picked up a spool of red and white stripped ribbon. for another $1.something I picked up a bottle of super glue that had a brush to brush it on. Paperclips to form the swirl of the flag. Wrap the ribbon on the paperclips and super glue the hell out of it. A few hours of asphixiation (spelling?) later cap's cape was ready.

(Don't believe me? Compare the wings up close, paying attention to the feather pattern-- they're identical. The only difference is that Hawkgirl's wings curve in slightly at the bottom)

I might have to pass that opportunity up until ultimates. I'm back working at my co-op while school is out. I leave at 6:45 am and tend not to get back until 6 pm or so. Then the GF and friends all harass me to come out.. so free time is at a minumum as of now. I'll be back in school june 30th for summer courses, unfortunately that's past the "due date" I will see though. Maybe there is something I can accomplish with some of the unleashed dupes I've got

I could always make a different one of the paradise X angels(since they currently are the kick I'm on, I've been trying to make an earth X-cap with no luck..)
So I suppose you can take your pick (these are the ones I've got supplies (paint) to make):

Hawkeye (I think I can do him not positive)

Eventually I'll get through all the angels (except giant man since I don't have anything to start with and I will not rip a sentinel apart)

Of course I could just rip the wings off cap and repaint some hawkgirl wings and slap them on.. of course that'd be a waste of my time and some wings I've already done.. :P

I'd be worried if I ripped the wings off it'd have negative effects on the paint. The wings also are supported by some "green stuff" for stability purposes. Removing it wouldn't be too difficult, but I put a lot of work into it and would rather not worry about messing something up.

So, which is it for the angels? I can use a hawkgirl set of wings for them. Unless everyone is insistant that hawkman was actually a hawkgirl and I had a mild lapse of retardism and said hawkman in my original post.. ;)

On another note, sorry, no exceptions to the Unleashed part criteria. Although I would like to exempt this or that....the thing is, the minute I start doing that, people who constucted their mods strictly by the guidelines will feel cheated or at a disadvantage for having followed the criteria. That being said, the deadline is still 11 days away.

I didn't think that I was going to submit anything, but I just finished this tonight and was going to post it in the forums anyway so. I have about 8 photos of him so just keep on clicking next or just look at all of my mods in my albums.

I'm not really pleased with the symbol. I'll probably go back later tonight and do a little touch up on it. Anyway, the parts used were Brainiac 5 body and Lexcorp Security Coat for the cape. To be honest I can't remember if someone else has used this recipe for Superboy recently or not. If you did oops. Just disregard this entry. I'm getting old and it's hard to keep so much info in my wee brain pan. Hope you enjoy!

On another note: I have some obscure Firestorm villains on the table right now that I am almost finished with. Some of you old timers might know them: Bug and Byte. Look for them in a future post...

I may not be the only one, but I did it on my Ultraman mod. And I'm hoping to find an hour or so to finish up my Owlman mod, that I'll be entering for this contest, tonight. But I may have to hold off on painting to tomorrow.

Love your Superboy by the way. It's sculpt they should've had the HT Superman look like, looking like he's starting to take off flying.

OK, first let me apologize. There's no way I can post the detailed result tonight. I'm behind on something for work and have about 4 hours of paperwork ahead of me tonight still.

I'd say Matches probably had the best detail paint job of all the entries-- you made the jacket texture look pretty close to real, which is really hard at that scale.

While there were several very good mods out there, I have to wonder what the heck y'all were thinking when Grappler's mod didn't even place.
The detail required on Stryfe alone should have warranted some serious votes.

I am left to assume the others either didn't know who Stryfe was, or didn't like the character, or maybe didn't think how much I had repainted him and how much trouble it was to stick 10 different blades in his head and to get those points to stick straight. I had even put the circles on his chest, but unfortunately becuase the picture was fuzzy, you couldn't tell. Oh, well, there is always next time.

I can't speak for everyone, but a fuzzy picture makes it very difficult to make out the hard work that goes into a mod. While it looked impressive, I just couldn't tell. Just my two cents.

captainspud- thanks! I wish I could have gotten a better picture, but I should have one in the next couple of weeks or so. I'm still torn on how best to do the crisscross pattern, and ended up just painting it when I would have preferred a fine-line pen or something like that (but the one I tried had ink that was water-soluble, and it ran when I tried to varnish it).
