NEW MUTANTS AND X-FORCE DESIGNS

Bad art and stilted dialog aside, I did enjoy X-Force for a variety of reasons (mostly New Mutants related), but I still can't field a full version of issue #1 team until I get this guy. He's a skilled gladiator from the future of another dimension (= realtively good combat values). He's got swords that, due to being forged with a combination of science and magic, can cut just about anything (including Juggernaut's armor... back before he became a weenie) which screams EW. He's tough, agile, and able to quickly recover from wounds (even the self-inflicted variety... don't ask), so Toughness, CR, and Regeneration seemed appropriate. Finally, he always goes down swinging (WP, Flurry) and his actual mutant power is to focus his will into his swords and fire energy beams that are pretty frickin' powerful (Cannonball even felt the blast through his force field = PB for punching through stuff, RCE for big damage on soft targets).

EDIT - so we've now got Shatterstar with Mutations and Monsters. Here's his dial... eh, not bad (especially for <60 points), but looks like they forgot about his ranged capability

I was SOOOOOOOOOOO happy to finally get a Cannonball in Armor Wars. He is hands down my favorite character (Louise Simonson's New Mutants were some of the first comics I ever seriously collected), and even though his figure wasn't that great, I was still happy to have him. Of the four versions we got, the LE (Sam Guthrie) is, in my opinion, the most accurate of the bunch since it can always move and attack as transporter and, honestly, except for when he flies into something really solid (like the Juggernaut ), Sam just keeps going. Also, since he's always had a hard time turning (even with practice, it still takes effort), the -2 to AV is totally appropriate. Charge works, but not as well as the Transporter M-and-A.

Other than that, though, those 4 pieces were pretty much garbage. No offense to Seth (it was his first full set after all), but a DV never higher than 17? Defend with only a 15 DV (and back loaded, too boot)? Come on! Sam's whole deal besides smashing into (and usually through...) things is the fact that he and anything he is carrying are virtually indestructible when he's blasting! To me, that says plenty of damage reducers (which we did get in the EV and LE) AND high DV (especially on the Defend clicks when he's carrying someone).

Anyway, enough ranting. Here's Cannonball. Time wise, this was is supposed to be right after X-Force started (but before that whole External malarky... so no Regen).

The last missing piece of an X-Force #1 team. Power-wise, she isn't really any different than the multitude of other cat-like characters we've already got (Tigra and Cheeta, off the top of my head), so no real surprises here. Since Feral tended to be very aggressive (even towards her own teammates) I felt that a lot of Battle Fury and Charge would be pretty appropriate. Also, since she tended to get more ferocious the angrier she got, she does have a bit of a mid-dial spike before slinking off with her tail between her legs.

Another needed New Mutant/X-Force character. Rictor was never a very able combatant (hence his middle of the road combat values), but he could build up to some pretty significant power if he concentrated. Overall, he's certainly not going to carry a team, but he can be a pretty effective secondary attacker.

I am a big fan of X-Force and Siryn was such a major player in that title for almost the entire run. She's not very different from Banshee (obviously), but a couple tweaks here and there.

So the Magma we got in Armor Wars was pretty darn good (especially the Vet); however, with SPs we can now cutomize her even more to be more comic accurate. In particular, I am thinking about her ability to melt/move through walls, floors, and such. Phasing would work, but since she usually left a big ol' hole where she went through, others could easily follow her (unlike the current P/T mechanics, which leave terrain intact). Also, there's a SP to reflect her ability to make localized eruptions right under her targets and literally knock them off their feet (kind of like Foom's terrain creation ability).

Speed - Lava Flow: When Magma is given a move action, she may ignore the effects of blocking and hindering terrain. If she passes through blocking or hindering terrain (including objects), that square of terrain is destroyed and becomes clear terrain. Passing through and destroying a square of blocking or hindering terrain uses one movement.
Damage - Fissure: Magma can use Barrier. Alternatively, Magma can choose to create just one square of blocking terrain; this terrain may be placed in a square occupied by a character. If the square is occupied, move the character into the nearest unoccupied square and then deal the character 1 click of penetrating damage. Otherwise, this square of blocking terrain follows all normal Barrier rules.

Cable recruited Caliban to add some brute force to X-Force and also for his tracking ability. While twisted into a simple-minded close combat monstrosity by Apocalypse (Caliban replaced Archangel as Death for a time), Caliban still retained some of his old abilities and habits (namely, his fear generation and his sneaky Morlock ways). Oh, and this dial is before he was worked over a second time by Apocalypse to be Pestilence (so, no 'contagious fear' here... maybe some other time ).

Attack - Fear Amplification: Give Caliban a power action; Caliban deals no damage for the duration of this action. Caliban may make a close combat attack against all adjacent opposing characters with 0 or 1 actions tokens. If the attack is successful, give the targets an action token. If the attack roll is a critical hit, give the targets 2 action tokens.
Damage - Tracker: At the beginning of the game, choose an opposing character or team symbol. Caliban and all friendly characters that share a keyword with Caliban ignore hindering terrain when targeting that character(s) while Caliban has this power. If this power is ever lost, countered, or canceled and then regained, the target character(s) do not change.
